See the winners of the National Geographic Traveller (UK) Photography Competition 2026 at King’s Cross

This summer, the winning images from the National Geographic Traveller (UK) Photography Competition 2026 will be on display in the heart of London. Between 28 May and 12 July, King’s Cross will be transformed into an open-air gallery, exhibiting the most captivating pieces of work from this year’s shortlist at Granary Square and its surrounds.

Showcasing the winning images in all eight categories — Urban, People, Landscape, Wildlife, Food, Aerial, Rising Star and Portfolio — this inaugural public exhibition offers the opportunity to experience the magazine’s spectacular photography up close, for a limited time only.

Since its launch in 2011, the National Geographic Traveller (UK) Photography Competition, sponsored by Hahnemühle and King’s Cross, has highlighted the value of visual storytelling — and 2026 was no exception. This year’s winners stood out for their distinct perspectives, keenness to see things differently and determination to document stories from around the world.

Ben Rowe, senior picture editor for National Geographic Traveller (UK), said: “It’s been a real pleasure to follow the entire journey of the photo competition. The introduction of two new categories — Rising Star and Aerial — has elevated this year’s competition, and I’m excited to share these outstanding photographs with the public at our exhibition in King’s Cross.”

The winners were announced at an awards ceremony on Thursday 28 May at Samsung KX, a contemporary immersive experience space.

The National Geographic Traveller (UK) Photography Competition 2026 is now accepting entries, inviting photographers to submit their finest travel images from the past year.

Two new categories join the line-up this year: Aerial, recognising the growing impact of drone photography, and Rising Star, designed to support emerging talent aged 18 to 25.

Entrants have the chance to see their work published in National Geographic Traveller (UK) and to win exceptional travel prizes. Selected entries will also be showcased at a dedicated event later in the year. Open to residents of the UK and Ireland aged 18 and over, the competition celebrates the breadth and creativity of modern travel photography.

The categories

Urban

From glass-and-steel skyscrapers to ancient heritage sites, the Urban category celebrates cities in all their forms. A strong sense of place, a clear focal point and the thoughtful use of texture, pattern and the spaces between buildings will impress.

Wildlife

Be it remote landscapes or local environments, judges will focus on images that show the relationship between animals and their habitat. Entries should clearly communicate how the environment, behaviour and subject interact within the frame.

Landscape

One of the most established disciplines in travel photography, this category invites creative vistas and unexpected perspectives. Images should demonstrate what a modern landscape photograph can be, whether through scale, light, composition or viewpoint.

Food

The Food category challenges photographers to go beyond the plate. Judges will be looking for images that capture both produce and destination, reflecting culture, provenance and travel through food. Successful entries will convey the uniqueness of the location as clearly as the subject itself.

People

More than a portrait, this category focuses on people within a travel context. Judges will look for thought-provoking images, whether depicting individuals or crowds. Sensitivity and depth are key considerations.

Portfolio

Designed for visual storytelling, the Portfolio category invites travel narratives told through a series of up to 10 images using a range of photographic styles to build a cohesive and distinctive picture of a location, culture or journey.

Aerial

New for 2026, the Aerial category recognises the striking perspectives made possible through drone photography. From urban patterns and architecture to remote wilderness and natural formations, viewpoints from above can transform the understanding of a landscape.

Rising Star

Also new for 2026, the Rising Star award aims to identify emerging talent in travel photography. Open to photographers aged 18 to 25, this category welcomes images based around a broad travel theme, offering newcomers an opportunity to gain recognition within the industry.

GRAND PRIZE

  • An 11-day holiday for two to Canada. The winning photographer will receive a self-drive trip through British Columbia courtesy of Journeyscape, including return flights from the UK to Vancouver, car hire, entry to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park and accommodation across Vancouver, Sun Peaks, Revelstoke, Nelson and Osoyoos.

Photographic entries must be under 10MB and .jpg format. All submissions must be the entrant’s own work, and they must own the copyright to any photographs entered.

Photographs must have been taken within two years of the date of entry and may not previously have won an award in any National Geographic photography contest. Only minor burning, dodging and/or colour correction is acceptable, as is cropping. The use of generative AI is not permitted.

Where a person is the main focus of the image, entrants must ensure they have either a model release form or the permission of the subject to enter their image into this competition. This applies only where the person featured is the main focus of the image, and not to street photography. The promoter reserves the right to request this and disqualify any entrants who can’t show proof of permission, if requested.

The judging process

The shortlist will be compiled by the art director and the picture editors of National Geographic Traveller (UK).   

The National Geographic Traveller (UK) team will send the shortlist of entries to each independent judge. The independent judges will in turn rank all entries for each of the eight categories. The art director and picture editors will then collate the judges’ votes to determine the winners.  

There will be one winner from each of the eight categories and a selection of runners up.  One category winner will be selected as the grand prize winner and will receive the grand prize. The grand prize winner may be selected from any category.  

Winners will be notified by 28 May 2026. Decisions of the judges are final and binding.

Entrants

The Prize Promotion closes at 11.59pm GMT on 30 April 2026. All entries must be received before this time. Only one entry per named entrant and email address will be accepted.

The winner will be drawn at random from valid entries received before the closing date.

The winner will be notified by email within 14 days of the Prize Promotion closing. The winner will be contacted using the email address provided at the time of entry. Once notified, the winner must reply within 10 days.

If the selected winner is unreachable, ineligible, disqualified or fails to claim the prize within 10 days of notification being sent by the Promoter, that winner automatically forfeits the prize.

The Albania Explorer tour uncovers the country’s rich heritage and stunning landscapes. It includes visits to historical sites such as the city of Berat — known for its Ottoman-era architecture — and Butrint, an ancient city showcasing Greek, Roman and Byzantine history that became a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1992. The tour culminates with a scenic drive along the Albanian Riviera, during which you’ll spend time with local communities and take in beautiful views of the Ionian Sea. Undiscovered Destinations is a trusted expert for travellers seeking meaningful, culturally immersive experiences in lesser-known destinations. Departures are guaranteed, and groups are capped at just 12 people.

The prize

The winner will receive two places on a departure of their choice, sharing a twin or double room, courtesy of Undiscovered Destinations. Accommodation, airport transfers and overland transport are included, as are entrance fees, guiding and some meals. The prize also includes two return economy flights from London to Tirana, with a checked-in baggage allowance of 20kg per person. Departure dates are available between April 2026 and September 2027. On the evening of Tuesday 30 September 2025, Travel Writing for Beginners will gave you the opportunity to learn the essential skills needed to break into the world of travel journalism.

Hosted online, the event will offer three informative and motivating workshops, delivered by a panel of experienced travel writers and editors. Whether you’re dreaming of writing your first piece or wondering how to make that all-important pitch to editors, this interactive session will give you the tools and confidence to begin your journey.

TRAVEL WRITING SESSIONS

The event consists of three 50-minute sessions, each designed to give you a foundational understanding of what it takes to be a successful travel writer in today’s publishing landscape. It will run from 6-9pm on Tuesday 30 September.

What makes a pitch stand out in a busy editor’s inbox? In this session, you’ll learn what makes an attention-grabbing pitch, how to tailor your ideas for specific publications and what editors are really looking for.

Meera Dattani is a freelance travel and culture journalist and executive editor at award-winning publication Adventure.com, where she commissions features from writers and photographers around the world.

Focusing on community-led and Indigenous tourism, food and cultural heritage, solo travel, soft adventure and wildlife/conservation in her own work, Meera’s travel stories have been published in Condé Nast Traveller, National Geographic Traveller (UK), Wanderlust, BBC Travel, Olive and others. She’s also a mentor, awards judge and panellist/moderator at events such as Women in Travel, TravMedia IMM, Adventure Travel Networking and Destinations Show.

Jessica Vincent is a multi-award-winning travel writer working with National Geographic Traveller (UK), Travel + Leisure, Vogue, Condé Nast Traveller and many more. She’s the editor of The Best British Travel Writing of the 21st Century (voted best travel book of 2022 by The Independent) and founder of the Travel Writing Academy, a course and community that helps aspiring writers break into the industry from scratch.

Sophie Griffiths joined Travel Trade Gazette in March 2010 as a news reporter before working her way up to the position of editor in January 2017. She’s also the founder of TTG LGBT — a network for LGBT people and allies within the travel industry which champions diversity in the sector. Sophie was named Editor of the Year at the PPA Independent Publisher Awards in 2018, 2019 and 2022, and in January 2022, she was named TTG’s first Chief Purpose Officer, helping TTG in its mission to drive a smarter, better, fairer travel industry. She returned to work in September 2024 after a year’s maternity leave.

Daniel Stables is a travel and culture writer based in Manchester. He writes for leading publications including National Geographic Traveller (UK), BBC Travel, Lonely Planet and national newspapers, and has authored, co-authored or contributed to more than 30 travel books on a range of destinations worldwide. His first narrative non-fiction book, Fiesta: A Journey Through Festivity, was published by Icon Books in August 2025.

The National Geographic Traveller (UK) Food Festival launched in 2019 as an immersive new culinary experience, showcasing some of the world’s most exciting cuisine and celebrating the role food plays as a driver of travel. Over the years, the two-day event has welcomed tens of thousands of visitors who have enjoyed workshops, masterclasses, talks from experts and cookbook authors, and live cooking demonstrations from some of the best in the field.

In 2025, attendees enjoyed appearances from world-renowned chefs and authors, including Yotam Ottolenghi, Andi Oliver, Clodagh McKenna, Asma Khan, José Pizarro and many more, alongside culinary showcases from Georgia, Louisiana, Türkiye, Barbados and beyond.
