Both Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis have entered the 2011 Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia.

It's no secret the number of US based tournaments on the LPGA Tour has dwindled as the Tour has lost several key sponsors. With a good share of their events overseas Natalie and Paula must learn to win in a decidedly different environment. Different time schedules, style of courses and food can drastically lower one's comfort level.

Lets hope that both women can show the USA and LPGA Tour proud by turning in several rounds of great golf.

Episode 3 of the Celebrity Apprentice featured the men's and women's teams trying to sell wedding dresses to raise money for charity. Project managers Tom Green and Brande Roderick squared off as the teams were provided make shift stores to sell the wedding dresses in.

Natalie Gulbis is still flying under the radar with really not much involvement. Not sure if thats a good thing or bad thing for Natalie Gulbis.

Dennis Rodman was AWOL, Tom Green was late and hung over.... well the men sealed their own fate. In the end, Tom Greene was fired and Dennis lives another week.

HSBC Women's Champions Steady For Natalie Gulbis

Day 2 at the HSBC Women's Champions was just a ho hum round for Natalie Gulbis. Natalie unfortunately lost one of the strokes she worked hard for on day one by posting a one over 73.

Natalie Gulbis had two bogeys on the front side leaving her at 2 over going out, but 2 nice birdies on the back put her even par for the day. Unfortunately a bogey on 18 put Natalie Gulbis one over for round two. Natalie now is in 22nd place at one under for the tournament and must get it going.

Jane Park and Paula Creamer still lead after 2 rounds at 6 under par.

Natalie Gulbis HSBC Women's Champions Day One

Natalie Gulbis started well in the 2009 HSBC Women's Champions with a respectable 2 under par round of 70 in Singapore. Natalie is in 11th place after round one. Natalie Gulbis is 3 shots behind Paula Creamer, Jane Park, and Angela Park who all shot 67's to take the lead at 5 under par.

Natalie Gulbis completed the front side in even par 36 and even better with one bogey and three birdies for a back side 34 and a round of 2 under par.

The 2009 LPGA Tour season for Natalie Gulbis continues to be steady.

Natalie Gulbis Gets Past Week 1 On The Celebrity Apprentice

Natalie Gulbis made her debut on The Celebrity Apprentice last night in the "cupcake" challenge.

Natalie looked a little nervous until the end of the show. She didn't get much air time and didn't seem to say too much. Natalie Gulbis was blamed for a recipe issue, but in the end that issue turned into the "cupcake save" that won the challenge for the girls team made up of Joan Rivers, Melissa Rivers, Annie Duke, and Brande Roderick to name a few. Ultimately, the girl's altered recipe won the taste test and an additional $15,000 in sales. That amount pushed them ahead of the mens team.

Not surpisingly Andrew Dice Clay, an outcast from the beginning on the mens team, was voted off for not contributing and threatening to quit the competition.

So in the end Natalie Gulbis did just fine and will appear in the next episode. It will be interesting to see a more relaxed Natalie Gulbis as the season continues. Stay tuned.

Natalie Gulbis Is Hot At The 2008 Ricoh British Women's Open

After 2 rounds of the 2008 Ricoh Women's British Open, Natalie Gulbis sits in contention near the top of the leaderboard.

Gulbis shot an opening round 69 and followed it up nicely in round 2 with a beautiful 68. Natalie is just a few shots off the lead and poised to make a move to the top in round 3 on Saturday.

Natalie had great success in 2007 by winning the 2007 Evian Masters in France. Her great play this week makes us wonder if she loves playing in Europe.

Natalie Gulbis fired a two under par final round of 70 to put herself in a sudden death playoff with Jeong Jang at the 2007 Evian Masters LPGA Golf Tournament in France. Natalie Gulbis proceeded to birdie 4 the first playoff hole to defeat Jang and win her first LPGA Event ever.

Gulbis opened the day 4 back of the 3 day leader Julie Inkster by shooting rounds of 72, 73, and 69 to put her in contention on the final day. An unfortunate bogey on 14 prevented Natalie from winning the tournament outright, but she called on her will to win and birdied the first playoff hole to remove the "hasn't won" stigma forever.

Natalie Gulbis loses playoff to Kim at Jamie Farr

SYLVANIA, Ohio -- Natalie Gulbis tried to mask the hurt inside.

"I'm always smiling. But it's very upsetting," Gulbis said after Mi Hyun Kim rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole to beat her and win the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic on Sunday.

Natalie Gulbis, who often models for magazines and calendars, is followed everywhere by huge galleries and is one of the best-known players on the LPGA Tour. Still, she had never finished better than a tie for third in her 4½ years on tour. The sudden-death defeat will likely amplify the questions about her ability to win.

Kim earned $180,000 for her second victory of the year and seventh in seven seasons on the tour. The South Korean also won the Ginn Clubs & Resort Open in April.

"She had soooo many fans!" Kim said. "I still cannot hear."

But Kim was emboldened by the fact that not everyone was cheering for Gulbis.

"I understand that I'm Korean and that many Americans fans are rooting for Natalie," Kim said. "I was happy that a few people said my name or my nickname, or 'Go Mi Hyun Kim.' "

Gulbis said Kim had one of the best short games on tour but said she still should have beaten her. After birdieing six of her first 10 holes in the final round, Gulbis parred the last 11 despite having some terrific birdie opportunities.

It appeared Natalie Gulbis, who had five consecutive birdies on the front nine in the final round, had ended her drought when she stared down a 12-footer for birdie and the win on the second playoff hole. But she missed it.

"I had chances," she said. "It's not like I didn't have chances."

After Kim hit her clutch putt on the final playoff hole, Gulbis was wide on a 9-foot putt, and the playoff continued.

"I won and I got a trophy," Kim said. "So I'm very happy."

The three top finishers each closed with 6-under 65s, with Kim and Gulbis completing regulation at 18-under 266. Paula Creamer, who birdied Nos. 14, 15, 16 and 17 but missed a 12-footer at 18 that would have gotten her into the playoff, even sat down in the grass near the 18th green to watch the playoff.

"What are you going to do?" Creamer said. "I made one at Sybase [to win in 2005] and this time I missed it. Next time I'm hopeful it'll go in."

Both Kim and Gulbis missed birdie putts of about 12 feet on the first playoff hole. Gulbis had the advantage on the extra hole but missed another 12-footer that would have given her the win.

"If she makes that putt ... then God gave it to her for a win," Kim said.

Se Ri Pak closed with a 66 to finish fourth at 268. She was trying to become only the third woman to win the same tournament five times. Mickey Wright won the Sea Island Open five times, and Annika Sorenstam has won the Samsung World Championship and the Mizuno Classic five times each. Sorenstam won the Mizuno five years in a row (2001-05).

Reilley Rankin shot a 70 and was at 272, with Brittany Lang (66) and Sung Ah Yim (70) at 274.

Annika Sorenstam, the 2000 Farr winner, made just one bogey all week but couldn't hit birdie putts. She finished with a 70 and was alone at 9-under 275.

Gulbis and Kim started the final round tied for the lead and sparred throughout.

Playing in the same grouping, Kim upstaged Gulbis with a birdie on the second hole -- hitting her approach on the waterlogged par-3 to 8 feet -- to take the lead before Gulbis answered with birdies on the next five holes.

Creamer jumped into contention with birdies at 14, 15,16 and 17 to draw within a shot of Gulbis.

Kim's 4-footer for birdie at 16 drew her within a shot, then pulled even with another birdie at 17 after spinning a wedge to 6 feet.

At the 72nd hole, first Creamer, then Gulbis, and finally Kim all missed birdie putts of around 10 to 12 feet. Creamer needed hers to make the playoff.

"I was very aware of where I was all day," said Creamer, last year's tour rookie of the year but winless for more than a year. "It's just one of those things. I knew that if I kept plugging along and kept giving myself chances, they were bound to drop. They did. And I just kept that momentum going"

After her putt slid off the right edge, she covered her eyes with her right hand. As she walked off the green, she tossed her bright pink golf ball into the stands.

The course was pounded by 2 inches of rain Friday that disrupted the tournament and turned the course into a water park. The players had to be ferried in carts across a small stream that swelled to a 75-yard wide torrent that bisected the course.

Gulbis said she'd try to dwell on the good things from the week.

"It's not like I finished last," she said. "There's a lot of positive stuff here."

Just not a victory.

The Change

The women's golf tour is starting to look a lot less- and a lot more like the men's

FIRST THERE WERE THE GARDENS OF AUGUSTA, and then there was Las Vegas.

A week after the men had golfed in golden light at the Masters, surrounded by azaleas, jasmine, and cherry blossoms, the women gathered behind the strip's casinos, back where they hide their ugly things, their parking garages and cooling plants. The women teed off from the tips of the beat-down Las Vegas Country Club, divided from the fast-food joints and condominium dip pools by a low stone wall and stretches of wire fence. The fairways burst into clouds of dust rather than divots; the greens were scarred by scorch marks, like airport runways. In Augusta, everything looked as though it had been trimmed with tiny scissors. In Las Vegas, everything felt as though it had been cooked under heat lamps.

Only the finishing hole had been halfheartedly dressed up, with a few rows of wilting flowers planted beyond the murky pond that protects the green. That was the sum of what the women were afforded as back- drop. They didn't have the luxury of tradition to fall back on, or the drama of built-in legend. (The nearest named bridge was in Lake Havasu.) They didn't have an orchestra to carry them into the next commercial break, and no roaring galleries were there to spur them on. Hell, on the first day of the Takefuji Classic, the Neil Diamond tribute at the Riviera drew better. The women were almost entirely on their own, left to generate their own electricity and provide their own scenery. Good thing for the LPGA, then, that it now boasts the likes of Natalie Gulbis and Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel and a few dozen other cute young things waiting in the pipeline—young women with a gift for holding your eyes, first when they pull on their smoking kilts and kneesocks, and next when they laser their opening drives 280 yards straight down your throat.

LINING UP HER FINAL approach at eighteen, Juli Inkster, the forty-five-year-old Hall of Famer, tried to ignore time and the giant sign that loomed behind her, erected beside the towering Las Vegas Hilton. MENOPAUSE, it proclaimed in great red block letters, THE MUSICAL.

The proximity of this salute to "the hilarious celebration of women and the Change" is the sort of easy rim shot that has plagued the Lesbians Playing Golf Association since its birth in 1950. In the sometimes unkind years since, the jokes and stereotypes have stacked up plenty high: Why do women golfers wear so much makeup and perfume? Because they're ugly and they stink. But now, for every woman out here wearing cargo shorts and black socks, there is another wearing a tennis skirt. For every set of Eastern Bloc shoul¬ders, there is a pair of West Coast legs.

For any number of reasons beyond the obvious, that's the change worth celebrating.

"If you haven't seen the LPGA in the last couple of years, then you haven't seen the LPGA," says Carolyn Bivens, the tour's image-savvy new commissioner—and, remarkably, its first female commis¬sioner since its inception. "It's just such an exciting time, like we're finally at the start of something big."

As if to drive home the point, Las Vegas golf fans woke up Thursday to boundless blue skies and a dream threesome. First, there was the twenty-three-year-old Gulbis, a part-time bikini model from nearby Henderson, Nevada. Joining her was Creamer, the perky, fashion-forward nineteen-year-old who was named the tour's top rookie last year and might as well permanently affix "teen sensation" to the front of her name. And rounding out the group was Brittany Lincicome, a tanned twenty-year-old Floridian and the owner of the aforementioned kilt.

The three of them gathered at the opening tee, each in her short skirt and tight top, each with straight white teeth, each with long hair in braids and ribbons, each waving politely when her name was called out by the starter and followed by cheers. And then, just to make sure that we knew they were more than pretty faces, each fired her drive straight down the left-hand side of the narrow fairway as though from a cannon. They made the long walk to their balls like roosters, with almost ridiculous, preening postures. Sun-drunk spectators—most of them middle-aged men sipping from cans of Miller Lite—collapsed in their wake. Here, on the other side of the ropes, were their wildest fantasies come to life: three attractive women with legs as long as flagsticks, and Creamer's drive the shortest among them at a picture-perfect 277 yards.

From Title IX to Tiger Woods, the ex¬planations for the LPGA's youth move¬ment are nearly as legion as the bad jokes used to be. Annika Sorenstam's pitting herself against the boys at the Colonial in 2003 raised the women's stature, and so have sixteen-year-old Michelle Wie's man-sized drives. But perhaps most im¬portant, the women of the LPGA, almost en masse, have suddenly embraced a more real feminism: They have decided that they don't need to look like men to compete alongside them.

Gulbis is the most famous ambassador of the new breed because she's the most centerfold daring. For each of her rounds in Las Vegas, she showed up wearing the sporting equivalent of a Catholic schoolgirl's uniform, with charm bracelets on her thin ankles and wrists. Happily, she can also play the game—she earned more than $1 million last year to finish sixth on the money list—meaning that the young girls tripping up behind their drooling fathers could see plenty to admire in her, too.

A first-round double bogey on eighteen hurt her chances for her first tour victory, but a second-round 69 saw her easily make the cut. (Creamer did, too, after following up her opening-round 70 with a 64, leaving her a stroke behind Lincicome, who shot 68 and 65—numbers that most golfers can only dream of.)

"I definitely got some flak when I was just a top-forty player," Gulbis says—after sitting down for a satellite feed with Best Damn Sports Show Period—alluding to her early notoriety for putting out her own swimsuit line and calendar, as well as for dating Ben Roethlisberger, the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. "After last year, I think my game has started to receive as much attention as anything else." She looks sideways into the sun and smiles: "Maybe I'm getting ugly."

Um, no.

THE POPULARITY of the LPGA has grown in fits and starts for the past decade. First would come a groundbreaker, and a legion of followers and new fans would be pulled along in her wake. Until now, most of the invaders have been foreign: The English arrived here, trailed by the Swedes. Se Ri Pak showed up, and now more than thirty Koreans play stateside. The Japanese are in hot pursuit with the arrival of Ai Miyazato and the approximately seventy-five reporters, photographers, and cameramen who record her every move. Perhaps the Mexicans are next, what with the success of delicate Lorena Ochoa, who tied the Las Vegas course record with a first-round 63, trailed by a pack of flag-waving supporters (and cheered long and loud by the men kept behind the fences at the country club, patching stucco and laying clay roof tiles).

But the majority of today's young raiders don't need a green card to play here. They come from California and Florida and Texas, light-kissed girls who have, quite literally, put down their pom-poms and picked up sticks. Creamer was twelve years old when her school told her she could either cheer from the sidelines of football games or play golf, one or the other, never both.

"It was a difficult decision," she says today. "My friends couldn't understand why I wanted to play golf when the popular girls were out cheerleading. But I thought there was more of a future in golf. I thought I was better at it. When I'm on the golf course, I'm so focused and so driven.... I'm like a dark, mean shade of pink."

Ah, pink. Apart from her first round in Las Vegas, when Creamer wore bad-ass black, she looked as though she were sponsored by pink. She wore pink skirts, pink shirts, and pink ribbons in her hair; the shaft of her driver was pink; the grip on her wedge was pink; her bag had pink trim; she and her (male) caddie wore pink caps; her sunglasses had pink frames; during her last round, she even played with a hot-pink ball.

Pink, in all of its shades, has become her signature, and in that, on this tour, Creamer is a revolutionary. Because she won four events during her rookie season, and because, in the admiring words of Inkster, "she wants to beat everybody's brains in," she has earned enough respect to get away with what was once a sin.

At last, pink has been reclaimed. It is no longer weak or soft, and it is no longer the exclusive dominion of Hustler. Out here, in freethinking Las Vegas, pink is the new color of money.

LATE ON FRIDAY NIGHT, after the women had headed to the range or back to their hotels to ready themselves for Saturday's final round, I made for my favorite drinking hole in Las Vegas: the threadbare lounge inside Westward Ho, at the old end of the strip, where I could put ten dollars down on the bar and pretty Manuela would bring me eight ice-cold Heinekens and keep two bucks for herself.

Unfortunately, when my cab dropped me off next door at Slots-A-Fun, as instructed, I discovered that Westward Ho had become a smoking hole in the ground, waiting to be filled in by whatever huge, polished casino will take its place.

There is something about change even for the better that can be heartbreaking, and Las Vegas is no place to fall in love. There was a kind of sadness in seeing Juli Inkster with MENOPAUSE breathing down her back and the LPGA's older, pleated-pants-wearing players losing the one place where they found self-redemption. They are on the cusp of losing the genuine warmth of their cozy tour; it has started to disappear around them, leveled to make room for something with a little more neon.

You could feel it crackling on Saturday morning. "It's in the air," said Christina Kim, one of the tour's spark plugs, a funny, profane Californian ("I prefer sausage to tacos," she says on the topic of sexual orientation) who holds the record for the lowest score at any United States Golf

Association event, a 62 back in 2001.Although only twenty-two, Kim was so struck by the pace of change around her that last summer she began to feel old somehow. Not quite menopausal, but a little as though she was being left behind. Unhip, maybe. Or, perhaps as a girl who has always taken pride in being the life of the party, Kim suddenly felt as though she was missing out on the fun.

It was time, she decided, for a personal makeover. She's lost thirty-three pounds over the past couple of months, ditched her plain-Jane duds, and even tossed away her trademark—a massive collection of Kangol hats.

This year, she strutted through Las Vegas in a short white skirt, a tight black top, and funky red shoes, with her eyes hidden behind wicked-cool shades and her long hair held back by a colorful silk scarf. Fact was, formerly chubby Christina Kim looked fabulous. And having paid heed to Paula Creamer's squeaky-voiced counsel ("If you look good, you'll play good"), she was also in contention on Saturday—like Creamer, like Gulbis, like Lincicome—ready to give Ochoa a run for her money.

"The men still wear their long pants," Kim says with the hint of a sneer. "We're different."

Better than the men, even, the women are closing in on the balance that makes for the most beautiful golf, that equipoise between power and finesse, aggression and ease, grit and art. Their short games still might need a little work, and nobody would complain about being able to play on courses that are more oases than salt flats. But perhaps the change should stop there, as though teetering on the edge of a red desert cliff, allowing those things that have always been good about the LPGA to survive alongside the new and improved. Then everything—birdies and good skin and warmth and sand saves and long hair—would hang there perfectly.

It was just that perfect when Ochoa set up her final approach in the footsteps of Inkster, under a dying sun. On the fairway of the par-5 eighteenth, and with a two-stroke lead in her back pocket, she decided not to play it safe. Rather than laying up before the pond, she tried to clear it.

It was a risky play undertaken by a slight whisper of a woman, which made it seem all the riskier. But Ochoa dropped her well-launched ball safely long, and she followed it proudly into the gallery's embrace. A chip and a putt and she had herself one last birdie and the win, and the Mexicans who had been following her stormed the green in a big screaming gang, dousing her in a fountain of beer and champagne.

Lincicome had already finished third, Creamer in a tie for sixth, Gulbis in a tie for seventeenth. Each had earned a check. Each would have better liked to have taken Ochoa's place in the middle of the celebration, but watching from the gallery, seeing the champagne soak into the grass, they knew that this was nearly as good a moment for them. It was one of those moments that made the past feel more distant than it is and the future more limitless—as though, after all these years, there might soon be no more shame in golfers being girls.

Webb Wins 2006 Kraft Nabisco - Gulbis Close

Natalie Gulbis had a great run at the 2006 Kraft Nabisco Championship finishing in a tie for 3rd place with Michelle Wie. Showing the determination that will make her a winner sooner than later, Natalie Gulbis shot a 4 under par 68 on Sunday to be in contention on the final hole of regulation play. Only a missed birdie putt on 18 kept her from a playoff with Karrie Webb and Lorena Ochoa.

After starting the tournament 11 shots behind Ochoa after round 1, Natalie fought back on the weekend for a combined 8 under par on Saturday and Sunday. Natalie could have easily just tried to finish the tournament and make a paycheck, but her desire to be the best allowed her to fight her way to the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

For one night, golf was put on the back burner while six LPGA Tour stars had their own night to mingle with the stars. Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis, Jimin Kang, Cristie Kerr, Christina Kim and Stephanie Louden were in Los Angeles on March 5 for Hollywood's biggest night: the 78th Annual Academy Awards. Although they were unable to attend the actual awards ceremony, the girls tore up the dance floor at two after-parties: the 14th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Party Co-hosted by Audi, Chopard and VH1-Inside; and US Weekly and Rolling Stone Rock the 2006 Oscars.

Throughout the night, four of the women had their picture taken with Carson Daly and, between dances, were busy spotting and talking to stars like Daly, Paris Hilton, Ludacris, Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Tori Spelling. Attending the Oscar after-parties was the perfect - albeit late - alternative for Kim and Creamer, who missed their senior proms for golf tournaments.

After 2 rounds of the SBS Open At Turtle Bay, Natalie Gulbis is at 5 under par and tied for 7th place. A beautiful second round of 67 which featured 5 birdies and no bogeys has put her in the hunt. Sorenstam leads Sweden to World Cup victory

SUN CITY, South Africa -- Sweden's Annika Sorenstam and Liselotte Neumann cruised to a three-stroke victory at the Women's World Cup of Golf on Sunday.

Sorenstam, the world No. 1, carded a 70 while Neumann battled for a 77 to give a combined 7-under 281. They are the second winners of the event after Japan in 2005.

"I could not have asked for a better start to 2006 and I hope we'll be able to come back and defend our title next year," said Sorenstam, who said she is now looking forward to going on a safari followed by a skiing holiday.

The Scottish pair of Catriona Matthew and Janice Moodie finished second at 4-under 284 on another tough day at the par-72 Gary Player Country Club.

Matthew recorded a 69, the low round of the day in singles, while Moodie produced an even-par 72 for a combined total of 3-under on the day to lift the Scots from seventh.

Wales, represented by Becky Brewerton and Becky Morgan, finished third at even par after both players shot 2-over 74s.

The United States, with Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis each shooting 73, was fourth, eight strokes behind the Swedes.

Sweden and Scotland were the only teams to cope in the increasingly challenging conditions, where thick rough and fast greens contributed to some woeful scoring.

Starting the day at 10 under, Sweden played solidly through the front nine with Sorenstam going out in 35 and Neumann in 37.

"I struggled a bit today," Neumann said. "Especially after the turn when I made bogeys on 11, 12 and 13, but Annika's eagle on the 14th gave us some breathing room."

Sorenstam produced two birdies, the first at the par-5 second and the next at the par-5 ninth after making a bogey on the difficult par-4 eighth where she had a near impossible chip from a greenside bunker.

Fortunately for the Swedes, only Scotland made a run at them, but they started the day nine shots behind and could never close the gap sufficiently.

Matthew produced three birdies in a row from the par-3 seventh, which Moodie also birdied, to move them to 5 under -- the lowest they managed.

South Korea's Bo Bae Song and Meena Lee, Sweden's nearest rivals at the beginning of the round, fell apart with a combined total of 9 over, while Finland and Colombia also struggled.

The Swedes endured a slight wobble after the turn with four bogeys in four holes to drop to 6 under before Sorenstam steadied the decline with her eagle on the par-5 14th after a superb 5-iron to 8 feet.

"I always look at the leaderboard," Sorenstam said. "On the 15th I saw that Scotland were doing well and I wasn't sure if they were finished or not, but we hung in there."

Sweden received a winner's check of $220,000, while Scotland took home $160,000.

Natalie Gulbis and Paula Creamer paired up for a round of 3 over par during the 2nd. round of the Women's World Cup Of Golf in South Africa on Saturday.

One birdie and 4 bogeys sent the USA team out in 3 over par 39. With 2 birdies and 2 bogeys on the back nine, the girls came in in even par 36 on the back nine for a 3 over finish to round 2.

Currently in 7th place after round two, the girls tee off on Sunday at 10:42 am paired again with the Taiwan team of Amy (Chin-Huei) Hung & Yu Ping Lin.

SUN CITY (20 January 2006) – Korea and Sweden confirmed their status as favourites for the Women’s World Cup of Golf when they finished the opening day of betterball matches tied for the lead on seven under and two strokes clear of the field at the Gary Player Country Club on Friday.

Korea’s Bo Bae Song and Meena Lee broke free of first a four-way tie for the lead on the front nine and then battled for the sole lead with Sweden on the back nine, which they took with a run of four birdies in seven holes from the turn on their way to a solid 65.

But playing behind them, world number one Annika Sorenstam rolled in a nine-foot birdie putt on the par-three 16th to earn Sweden a share of the lead at the end of a long day on the fairways.

“It was tough to keep focused because we were out there for a very long time,” said Sweden’s Liselotte Neumann. “Whenever we got to a tee box the group ahead had just walked off. So it was a day spent looking for shade. But we’re very happy with our performance and we’re obviously in a good position.”

Both countries combined superbly in the betterball to distance themselves from the other 18 countries.

Sorenstam and Neumann made four birdies apiece and suffered only one bogey, although Neumann carried the team on the front nine.

“For the first 12 holes I was really on top of my game. I think the only slip-up was a birdie putt I missed from five feet on the 10th hole. I kept the ball in play off the tee and it was generally a good ball-striking day for me.”

The Koreans, who finished second in the inaugural event last year, were also remarkably consistent and did not drop a single shot.

“Both of us played really well today,” said Song.

And it was the ability of both to limit their time spent in the notorious Gary Player Country Club rough that proved to be the key to their positions at the top of the leaderboard.

“The rough was very difficult and we tried to go for accuracy rather than distance off the tee,” said Lee.

Taiwan finished as the nearest challenger to the lead on five under, with America at four under.

The popular American pairing of Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis were amongst the leaders following Gulbis’s 45-foot putt for eagle on the par-five ninth, which she described as a “tap-in eagle”.

But they failed to make anything happen on the back nine as they leaders went away from them.

“We had a ton of birdie opportunities but struggled on the back nine,” said Creamer.

South Africa finished the opening day at three under, while defending champions Japan opened with a disappointing one over 73.

Saturday’s foursomes will tee off an hour earlier than originally scheduled and at 10:15.
