this is a photo blog is pleased to announce it's first group show, taking place as part of the Lucie Foundation's month-long celebration of photography in Los Angeles, MOPLA. Entitled this is a photo show, the gallery-style exhibit will showcase the work of sixteen of the site's contributors, featuring photographs that were created specifically for the blog's various creative assignments.

Exhibition at The Light Factory Museum

I'm pleased to announce that my work will be part of a 4-person exhibition, Bring the Family, at The Light Factory Contemporary Museum of Photography and Film in Charlotte, North Carolina.

From the museum:
"Life is overwhelming and stressful. As we work through our busy schedules, we often realize at the end of the day what is truly important. In Bring the Family, photographers Tina Barney, Lydia Panas, Catalina Kulczar-Marin, and Natalie Young explore the need for family, friends, and home."

I'll have ten images in the exhibition, five from The Farm series, and five from the Georgia & Sabine series.

“Best of the Best” Emerging Fine Art Photographers of 2010

I'm extremely honored to have been named one of the “Best of the Best” Emerging Fine Art Photographers of 2010 by Forrest Old of the BWGallerist. Happy to see some friends/artists on the list including Isa Leshko and Susan Burnstine.

Forrest said some very kind words about my work on the BWGallerist blog back in August after seeing my work on exhibit at PhotoLA and then again in Lenswork Magazine (see the original August posting here).

'Dog Days' Exhibit at Corden Potts Gallery, SF

Well, this is a fun one! The Corden Potts Gallery in San Francisco has put together a wonderful show of dog photographs from an international roster of fine art photographers, called 'Dog Days'. I'm happy to have several images included in the show, along with some of my favorite peeps ... Raymond Meeks, Aline Smithson, Susan Burnstine, Cig Harvey, and others.

The show opens today and runs through August 28th. If you are in SF, you can stop by the reception this Saturday, July 17th, from 2-5pm. The gallery is on Geary Street, which has tons of other great galleries to check out while you're there. I won't be able to attend the opening, but there will be signed copies of the Georgia & Sabine book available for sale at the gallery.

From the gallery:
The term "dog days" is often used to refer to the hottest, most sultry days of summer. The expression dates back to Greek and Roman times and refers to the Sirius, the Dog Star, which was at its brightest during the hottest months of the year. In the northern hemisphere, dog days usually fall between early July and early September.

Lenswork Magazine is available!

Lenswork is out! Issue #88 features 12 images from my Georgia & Sabine series along with an interview. The printing is beautiful, as always. Lenswork also publishes an extended multimedia DVD of each issue, which includes an audio interview of yours truly, along with slideshows of the full series of images from both the Georgia & Sabine series and The Farm series. This issue also features an extended interview with the ever-inspiring photographer Sean Kernan.

Lenswork has a special place in my heart ... I discovered it early on as a young newbie photographer, and I remember thinking that if ever someday my work were to be published there, then certainly that meant I 'had arrived.' I'm quite a few years older now, but still not sure my train has even left the station (let alone 'arrived' anywhere), but here's to checking something off my bucket list anyway, and thanks to Brooks for that. ; - )

ANIMALIA Group Show

Glad to announce that "Georgia & Sabine #34" (pictured above) is part of the upcoming group show, Animalia, at the Center for Fine Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado. The images were selected by juror, Karen Irvine, who is Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MOCP), Columbia College Chicago. The exhibition runs May 28th through June 26th, and there is an opening reception on June 4th from 6-9pm. Thanks to Karen Irvine and the C4FAP staff for this opportunity.

Interview for LensWork Magazine

Just finished doing an audio interview with ever-affable Brooks Jensen from LensWork Magazine. I met Brooks last spring at PhotoLucida, and I'm thrilled to announce that the Georgia & Sabine series will be featured in the upcoming print issue of LensWork (May/June). Also The Farm series will be included in the LensWork Extended Interactive DVD, which will also include the audio interview.

If you aren't familiar with the magazine, I'd encourage you to check it out. I've subscribed to this magazine for years because they are one of the only mags to showcase such large portfolios of images (up to 20) from a single artist and series, and it's truly one of the most beautifully printed b/w photography magazines around. I'll post again when the issue is out ...

pictureHOPE: Limited Edition Prints for $50 -- 100% Donated to Haiti Relief

Ok here's the deal: purchase a limited edition fine art photograph for $50 from one of the talented women in the pictureHOPE project, and 100% percent of the money will be donated directly to Doctors Without Borders USA to benefit the people of Haiti.

I'm proud to be part of this special fundraising effort put together by Eric Keller of Soulcatcher Studio (Santa Fe, NM). Eric invited about 20 female photographers to each donate 10 prints from a single image, each to be sold for $50. The project launched yesterday, and the response has been overwhelming .. we raised over $5,000 the first day!

PhotoLA 2010

Had a great time at PhotoLA this past weekend, which was held at the Santa Monica Civic Center this year. My work was exhibited by my dealer, Kevin Longino. The show was smaller this year, but still well attended despite the storms that started on Sunday. I was excited to debut my new book release of Georgia & Sabine and it was great to see so many familiar faces from the L.A. art community.

'Georgia & Sabine' book now available!

I'm excited to announce that the Georgia & Sabine series is now available as a book! I have available a softcover version for $35, as well as a special edition hardcover that is presented in a slipcase with an original silver gelatin print and is limited to an edition 100, which sells for $275.

The book includes an essay written by Mindaugas Kavaliauskas, director of the Kaunas Photo Festival in Lithuania, where the series was exhibited this fall.

Show at Newspace Center for Photography

The Georgia & Sabine exhibition opened last week at the Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, Oregon. I was glad to be able to attend the opening, and it was great to be back in Portland again to visit friends, drink good coffee and eat great food! Also exhibited at the gallery is the lovely work of Angela Bacon-Kidwell. The show will be up until January 3rd, if you are in the area please stop by to see it. My book of the exhibition is available for sale at the gallery as well.

Had a wonderful time in China at the Lishui Photography Festival! Myself and 30 other American photographers were invited to exhibit work at the festival in November. The main exhibitions were curated Wang and Yan Li, and additionally about a dozen American guest curators were asked to invite an artist of their choice. Overall, a great group of photographers and curators, many of whom I have known from previous events. Our hosts took very good care of us, and were treated as honored guests while we there. Thanks to Yan for all her hard work to get us there and keep us organized and fed.

Nominated for Baum Award

I recently found out that I've been nominated for the 2010 Baum Award for Emerging American Photographers, and I'm quite honored. One of the largest photography awards in the country, it is the only award in the United States to single out ‘emerging’ photographers for support. Twenty-five nominators from five regions across the United States were asked to nominate two artists. Judging will take place in mid-January and be announced shortly thereafter. SF Camerawork will host an exhibition of the recipient’s work in May 2010 and the Baum Foundation will present an award of $10,000.

The December issue of the U.K. publication, Black & White Photography, has an article about my work written by L.A.'s own Susan Burnstine, who is a regular contributing writer to the magazine. Susan has been a big supporter of my work for several years now, and has given encouragement and advice in numerous ways ... a big thanks.

Kaunas Photo Festival '09

While I was at the PhotoLucida portfolio reviews in Portland this past May, I met Mindaugas Kavaliauskas, who organizes the largest eastern European photo festival in Kaunas, Lithuania: the Kaunas Photo Festival. I had a fascinating conversation with Mindaugas ... he's a very interesting writer, curator, and photographer in his own right. He contacted me shortly after the Portland trip, and asked me to exhibit work at this year's festival, which took place last week (September 2-4).

He chose to exhibit four prints from the Georgia & Sabine series, which were part of the "Photo Animals" exhibition at the Museum of History of Medicine and Pharmacy. U.S. artist Amy Stein was also part of the Animals exhibition.

Another element of the festival was the "Night of Photography", where photographs were projected on an open-air screen set up in the town square (pictured above). The entire Georgia & Sabine series was shown as a slideshow as part of this event.

I would have loved to have been able to attend, but couldn't quite swing the travel time. Mindaugas reports, however, that the opening of the exhibition had a packed house and the entire festival was a huge success for them. This is the first time I've exhibited in an international festival .. it's fun to think of my work being exhibited in new ways and viewed by people in a completely different cultural context.

Another U.S. artist Jeffu Warmouth also exhibited his work in the festival, and was in attendance. If you haven't seen his Spudnik series, it definitely a treat. Great work, and it will keep you from taking photography too seriously. Which is good.

I'm happy to announce I've just accepted an invitation to participate in the 2009 Lishui International Photo Festival in Lishui, China, this coming November. I'll have an exhibition of 25 images from THE FARM series, and will be attending the festival. This will part of a city-wide event encompassing more than 100 different exhibitions, workshops, and other photography events. I'm very much looking forward to the adventure!

Melanie McWhorter (PhotoEye Books) curated a great online group show, The Unnatural Nature of Food for Fraction Magazine. I'm happy to have my image, "Lucid" from THE FARM series included in such a diverse and interesting show.

I am honored that my image, "In Flight", was selected for the Center for Fine Art Photography's upcoming 'Black & White' Exhibition, juried by Jim Casper (Editor and Publisher of Lens Culture, Paris, France). New Series Published in Migrate Magazine

Four images from my new body of work were recently published in Migrate Magazine, a South African publication sponsored by The Loerie Awards. The theme of the issue is 'Ego' and I was asked to contribute work that fit that theme. The project I am currently working on fit the bill, so I submitted, however I haven't shown the work anywhere else yet. I'll hopefully have it posted on my website in the next few months, but this is a teaser.
