From the little German that I do understand this is really funny.

Overall, I felt that a lot of effort had been put into making the film, and for the daunting task of fitting 20 episodes worth of material into a single movie, they were able to include quite a bit of story into the plot. Although there were several notable events that were missing from the movie.

Well, I guess I can’t keep my feelings masked for too much longer. I didn’t really think that this movie was a fair representation of the television series. To start off, I don’t know what M. Night Shyamalan was thinking, but you can’t just go around and change the way that people’s name are pronounced. **Spoilers may be ahead** Katara starts narrating at the beginning of the movie and my first thoughts were, ‘what is wrong with her voice?’. She kept mentioning the Ah-vatar, whose name just happens to be Ah-ng. Her brother’s name has been slaughtered and is now Sow-kah. If there was one thing that I kept cringing about throughout the movie, it was their funny accents that only kicked in when they were saying someone’s name.

Point number two that was frustrating for me was how they bended. The effects were really cool looking, but anytime that someone was bending, it took a complicated series of fifteen steps of hand waving before anything happened. None of this instant gratification from the television series where Zuko could punch the air and fireballs would leap from his fists. Now the firebenders are crippled and can only dance around existing flames before they can control the fire and attack everyone around them. As a side note, I guess it is hard to depict the inner fire that is inside of each firebender that fuels their passions into fire, so instead they can only firebend existing fire.

But back to the original point. If I wasn’t a bender, and I was being attacked, all I would have needed to do was throw something at the benders while they were dancing around to protect myself and or to maim/kill them. Whenever it takes three minutes to charge a small little burst of air or water, you know there is a serious problem with your plan of attack.

Now, the movie had some good points going for it. The scenery was beautiful. They used some wonderful shots of Greenland and easily matched anything that ‘Middle Earth’ in New Zealand offered for Lord of the Rings.

But back to what this post is really for. I felt that the quality of most of the lines of this film were of the quality of a cold reading. Only a few times throughout the film did I feel the kind of emotion in the actor’s voices as they delivered their lines that was meant to be portrayed. Otherwise it was just confusing. Like the time Princess Yue said, “We need to show them that we believe in our beliefs as much as they believe in their beliefs.” That sounds more like a general summary of what her line was supposed to be. But then it was never looked at by the writer of the script and made into an actual line.

As my last complaint, I feel that Ah-ng had way too much control over the Avatar state. He wasn’t all out of it like in the television series where he would lose control over his emotions and start tearing things apart in the Avatar state. This was a central point to the plot of the first two seasons. This was the struggle that Aang had. He didn’t want to go into the Avatar state because he could have hurt Katara (or anyone else for that matter). In the movie, Ah-ng would go into the Avatar state and was consciously making decisions about using the powers of the Avatar. Because of this, he was never exhausted when he left the Avatar state.

Well, this is now over 600 words and I feel like I should wrap this up. To summarize, if you enjoy the television series, you will at least understand what is going on in the film because it crams as much as it can into 103 minutes. Although you will probably leave the theater with a disappointed taste in your mouth as you realize all the potential that was lost throughout the film. But if you are looking for a good entrance into the world of bending, this film will jump-start your understanding of the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
