Art & Australia/Credit Suisse Private Banking Contemporary Art Award

This prestigious award supports emerging professional artists through publishing an image of the winner's work on the back cover of Art & Australia magazine and inside, an article on the winner's practice.
One of the 2012 winners will have a work acquired for the Art & Australia Collection. Also from this year, each of the award recipients will be offered a complimentary full-page advertisement in Art & Australia.

Closing date: 1 March 2012
Notification: Two months following the closing date
Applications must submitted online by the above due date. Printed applications will not be accepted. Please read all of the information before submitting your application.

The NAS Library will be:

CLOSED: Thursday 26 January, Australia Day

CLOSED FOR LUNCH 12 noon – 1pm : Friday 27 January, Friday 3 February & Friday 10 February, and

CLOSED: Monday 13 February 2012.

Otherwise opening hours remain 10am - 4pm Monday - Friday until 24 Feb. Normal semester hours resume on Monday 27 February.

Photography is the medium of our age – everyone has a camera now and if you are in a public place a camera is most certainly watching you.
This annual exhibition of the best work by over 55 selected Australian artists working in photo media is a must see exhibition for any student interested in photography and media.

Slide pre-selection form to be returned to Gold Coast City Gallery no later than Friday 10 February 2012.
Please include three jpegs or copy prints (no larger than A4), a one page CV,
an artist statement (no more than 150 words per work) and entry fee of $30.00 per artist.

Rick Amor Drawing Prize

Rick Amor, one of Australia's leading contemporary artists, has sponsored a $10,000 competition for small drawings at the Art Gallery of Ballarat.
Amor says "I hope that this prize gives people one more reason to keep drawing on paper… the most direct and intimate expression of an artist's sensibility".

Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize

Adelaide Perry Gallery invites artists to submit works for the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, February 2012, which will be awarded for the best drawing, by an Australian artist, completed within a period of 12 months prior to 13 January, 2012.

The Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, valued at $20,000.00, is an acquisitive prize.
Entries in the competition are also eligible to be considered for The People’s Choice Award, valued at $2,000.00 (non-acquisitive).

The Library is calling for LSG Exhibition Proposals until Friday the 28th October 2011. Forms are available at the library's front desk. The LSG exhibition space is available for 2nd year, 3rd year, BFA Hons and MA students to exhibit work for a three week period. This is an excellent opportunity to exhibit work as an individual or a group. Come in to the library today and collect your form and ask library staff for any information about the process.

McClelland Sculpture Survey & Award 2012

Since its inception in 2003, the McClelland Sculpture Survey has emerged as the most imporant outdoor scuplture exhibition in Australia.
Displayed throughout 16 hectares of bush and landscaped gardens the exhibition highlights the diversity and invention of contemporary scupltural practice.

The award is valued at $100,000 (aquisitive) and will be judged by Deborah Edwards, Senior Curator-Australian Art, AGNSW.

JStor Maintenance

Jstor has notified us that "on Friday, September 9 and Saturday, September 10, they will be performing site maintenance that requires a “read-only” period for these two days.

During this scheduled maintenance, users will be able to search, browse, and access and download PDF files for content in JSTOR. They will not be able to save citations, reset passwords, create or update MyJSTOR accounts, or purchase articles."

Given that this is happening in the US, it means that availability will be limited here on the weekend of September 10 & 11. So plan ahead and make sure you don't need to do any major Jstor research that weekend!

The Kings Cross Photography Prize is an exciting project run by the Kings Cross Arts Guild. This is its second year of exhibition. Last year’s Competition was titled Images of the Cross. The Guild has a history of supporting artists in particular local artists. This year photographer/curator Sandy Edwards of ARTHERE is Guest Curator.

Dobell Prize for Drawing

In instituting this annual prize, the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation wishes to encourage excellence in drawing and draughtsmanship.

Value: $25 000 (acquisitive)
Medium: Unique work on paper or other suitable support in any medium or combination of media. This includes those media and materials traditionally associated with the practice of drawing (pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, etc.) and those which are part of contemporary drawing practice, including pastel, watercolour, collage etc.

Other information: Applicants must have been born in Australia or hold Australian citizenship, and have been a resident in Australia for a period of 12 months prior to the closing date. Works are to be completed during the 12 months preceding the closing date.

Application forms for 2011 will be available for download soon.

A complete list of conditions are included in the application forms.
Entries for the 2011 Dobell Prize will be received between Wednesday 23 November and Friday 25 November.

State Reference Library closed for renovations

The State Reference Library at the State Library of New South Wales will be closed from 1 August to 18 September. The Mitchell Library, bookshop, cafe and exhibition galleries will remain open during this time.

The ‘new look’ State Reference Library will reopen on Monday 19 September. There’ll be dedicated study rooms, more informal work spaces and more computers. The new layout will also offer easier access to services and collections.

In 2012 renovations will continue in the Macquarie Street foyer, with a new bookshop, cafe and enhanced theatre-style auditorium.

The renovation work will be conducted in three stages:

Stage 1
29 June – 31 July
Work commences on Lower Ground 2, State Reference Library. All services available.

Stage 2
1 August – 18 September
State Reference Library closed for renovation. Mitchell Library is open.

Stage 3
February/March 2012
Macquarie Street foyer closed for renovation. State Reference Library accessible via the Mitchell Library.

Deakin University contemporary small sculpture award 2011
$10,000 acquisitive sculpture prize

This award is sponsored by the School of Management and Marketing, Faculty of Business and Law, Deakin University, and organised by the Deakin University Art Collection and Galleries unit.

Sculptures must be no more than 70cm in height, width or depth and less than 30 kilograms in weight (including the stand). Sculptures can be in any medium but should be free standing.

Finalists will be selected from submitted entries by the judging panel consisting of:

Kelly Gellatly, Curator of contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Victoria
Leanne Willis, Manager, Art Collection and Galleries Deakin University

One outstanding entry will be awarded $10,000 by the judging panel. The award winning sculpture will become part of Deakin University's art collection.

Paddington Art Prize 2011

The PADDINGTON ART PRIZE 2011, a $20,000 acquisitive prize for a painting inspired by the Australian Landscape. This National Prize is now in its eigth year and will be held at MENZIES ART BRANDS Gallery, 12 Todman Ave Kensington, Sydney N.S.W.

The PADDINGTON ART PRIZE was established by Marlene Antico in 2004. This $20,000 acquisitive prize is awarded annually for a painting inspired by the Australian landscape.
An exciting addition to the Australian Arts calendar, the PADDINGTON ART PRIZE takes its place among the country's most lucrative and highly coveted painting prizes.
The prize encourages the interpretation of the landscape as a significant contemporary genre, its long tradition in Australian painting as a key contributor to our national ethos, and is a positive initiative in private patronage of the arts in Australia.

This NATIONAL ART PRIZE is open to Australian citizens and residents of 12 months or more who are over the age of eighteen. The prize has been developed to push through existing barriers caused by monetary difficulties that impede artists from showcasing their works. The prize also aims to discover new talents and invigorate the art market with iconic styles that reflect the topography and spirit of Australia.

CLOSING DATE for DISC ENTRIES: Thursday 1 September. All entries must be accompanied by the signed and witnessed application form together with the entry fee.

The Fleurieu Art Prize 2011

The Fleurieu Biennale began in 1998 and has since grown into an event that has won recognition both nationally and internationally.
The Fleurieu Art Prize 2011 will be the seventh prize awarded since its inception offering a total prize pool of $90,000 - 4 November - 5 December 2011

The Fleurieu Art Prize, the World's richest landscape painting prize ($50,000), is a rich combination of fine art, some of the world's best wine, fine food and beautiful vistas of the region.
McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Peninsula is a region famous for its striking vistas and extraordinary geological formations. The area has long been the home and a source of inspiration for some of Australia's most important landscape artists.

The Fleurieu Art Prize attracts entries from artists of a national reputation and is supported by internationally significant judges.
The judges for all categories of the Fleurieu Art Prize 2011 are:

Ted Snell, Arts Educator, Artist, Chair of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council

All works submitted will be subject to a pre-selection process by the judging panel based upon the digital images submitted. The pre-selected list will be published on the Fleurieu Biennale website from Monday, 19th September 2011.
All selected entries will be exhibited at the category exhibition venue and judged at the venue during the first week of exhibition.

Applications postmarked before COB 5th August 2011 will be accepted. Entries must consist of completed entry form, entry fee paid in full (cheque or direct debit details), image(s), clearly labeled with image list and artist name, of artwork submitted for judging. Please note CDs will not be returned. Late applications will not be accepted.

Mosman Art Prize

The Mosman Art Prize is an annual, acquisitive award for painting sponsored by Mosman Municipal Council.

Established in 1947, the Prize is one of the oldest and most prestigious, local government art awards in Australia. The winning works form a splendid collection of modern and contemporary art, reflecting developments in Australian art practice over the last half a century.

The Mosman Art Prize has a value of $30,000.
Entrants in the Mosman Art Prize are also eligible to be considered for:
Allan Gamble Memorial Art Prize (built environment) $3,000
Viewers’ Choice Prize $1,000
Commendation Prize $2,000
Young Emerging Artist’s Award $2,000

Past Winners
The Mosman Art Prize attracts a diverse and accomplished field of professional and amateur artists from all over Australia.
