I am a therapist from a facility that offers residential treatment for teens and works with many adolescents and their families. I have had many parents express the desire to want to be able to communicate more clearly and effectively with their children.

Recently I was working with a parent who was struggling with a student that was talking about continuing to use drugs when he returns home. The student knows drug use is against his parents’ family rules. Often times as parents, we become fixated on wanting our children to accept our rules and that we just need to push harder to get them to hear us. Unfortunately, that often doesn’t pan out well. We mostly push others away when we push our point harder and harder. There are four tips I would like to suggest to give communication help for parents. These tips discuss a few areas that will improve your capacity as parents as you are working with teens in your life.

Tip 1: Learning to really listen

Steven Covey stated that one must first seek to understand before we seek to be understood. This is paramount. As a parent and as a therapist who specializes in residential treatment for teens, I know that it feels great to be heard by others. While getting others to hear and listen to what we have to say is important, I have found that many families often get to a place where they want everyone else to listen to them, but they struggle to really listen and hear what others are saying to them. Mr. Covey’s advice is critically important in family relationships, as well as with other people in our lives.

Tip 2: Setting healthy boundaries with our children.

Setting healthy and appropriate boundaries with our children provides him or her a framework to know parents’ views and values. This ideally would begin when our children are young and ought to be consistent throughout their lives. Over time, your child will also notice the changes you’ve made in your ability to communicate with him/her.

Insulated Glass is a very prominent building material today, and with the high volume of insulated glass units being used, it inherently plays a significant role in both energy consumption and energy savings.  Heating and cooling a building requires a lot of energy, so anything that can be done to reduce the amount of energy needed or conserve the energy already expended will result in less CO2 emissions and less cost.

One of the best energy conservation measures that can be implemented for today’s buildings is to use modern insulated glass equipment to produce high efficiency, energy-saving double-glazed, triple-glazed or vacuum insulated glass units (known as VIG units).  The vast majority of the buildings standing today were built when energy conservation was not as important as it is today.  These buildings consume a large amount of energy for heating and cooling.  The windows used in many of those buildings are double glazed, as this technology has been around for decades, but compared to today, they are extremely inefficient at conserving energy.  Insulated glass units started being used after the first series of petroleum crises were experienced in the US, which did help energy savings to a small degree, but the insulated glass equipment of the day simply doesn’t compare to what we can do today.  Thus, even those older insulated glass units are now completely outdated.

Using advanced glazing solutions will significantly reduce heating and cooling consumption and dramatically reduce the associated CO2 emissions.  These advanced solutions include Low-Emissivity (Low E) glass, which is glass treated with a special transparent coating.  This coating.

reflects or absorbs heat (in the form of IR light or heat energy).  In cold weather, this coating can reflect heat back into the building reducing energy loss from the window, as well as absorb solar energy from the outside.  In warm weather, this coating reflects heat from the outside, not allowing it into the building, and thus, reducing cooling costs and energy consumption.  This coating is expected to remain an important aspect of the glass industry well into the future.

Today, this specially coated glass is also being used in conjunction with various gases, including argon and krypton, to further reduce loss in double glazed and triple glazed insulated glass units.  These gases are safe, odorless and non-toxic. The gases work to conserve energy because they are much denser than air, and thus, provide considerably more insulation value, which significantly reduces heat transfer.  Adding these gases to insulated glass units is done most efficiently by today’s advanced insulated glass equipment and manufacturing techniques.

A new type of insulated glass panel that is growing in popularity is Vacuum Insulated Glass units (or VIG units).  Many glass industry experts believe these vacuum insulated glass units are the ultimate solution for energy conservation in windows.  The special insulated glass equipment required to produce these vacuum insulated glass units represents a major capital investment, in the tens of millions of dollars, but many glass industry experts feel it is worth the expense, as this glass will become the industry standard in the future.

Step 1. Desensitize Your Dog with Positive Reinforcement

Some dogs are more sensitive to new experiences than others. To help your dog get use to his or her new toy try setting the dog treadmill up in the room it will be used and leave it turned off for a day or two. Let your dog get use to the treadmill not running. The goal is to get your dog to jump on and off the dog treadmill without hesitation. Reinforce positively with treats, toys, rub downs, massages or play time. The more comfortable the dog is with the dog treadmill the easier it will be to train. If your dog has an aversion to a room, pick another space.

Step 2. Use a Leash and Guide Body Position with a Gentle Hand and Confidence

It is recommended to use a leash and collar appropriate for the breed. For small dogs we recommend a front clip harness system to protect the neck. For medium to larger dogs a regular leash and collar will do. However, you may find that a harness system with a back handle can be useful when you begin to position your dog on the treadmill. It is often helpful to use the same tools you use on your dogs walk outside as this familiarity will help your dog understand he is going for a walk and he will associate it with a good time.

The leash is an extension of your gentle, but firm hand, to help guide and lead your dog where you want her to go so she will gain confidence. Practice leading your dog on and off the Dog Treadmill with the leash. Teach your dog to enter and exit from the rear. Since dogs learn and think in pictures you will help establish the correct action you want your dog to follow. Once the dog is on the treadmill dispense a treat from your hand positioned at nose level above the console. Repeat several times to help your dog understand that when he/she is correctly positioned on the treadmill he/she will be rewarded.  You dog will be ready for Step 3 when the act of getting on and off correctly is done without hesitation.

Step 3. Turn on the Dog Treadmill

Once Step 2 is performed without hesitation you can turn on the dog treadmill to get ready to walk. For dogs the act of the ground moving is not natural. It may invoke the “flight or fight” instinct. At this point it is important to keep your dog moving and stepping forward. It is hard for dogs to focus on one or more thing so this is the time to use a smelly treat or toy. Your voice and confidence are instrumental in assuring your dog that everything is ok. Don’t overdo it. If you believe it is ok, so will your dog. Choose a speed that is adequate for the breed and helps them step naturally. Watch closely, you may need to adjust the speed according to stride. The idea is to get them in a comfortable walking gait, just like outside. If it is too slow they will lose confidence and try to bolt. If it is too fast it will be hard to for you to maintain control.

Step 4. Pick up the Speed

Keep your leash slightly slack with little tension and use a treat periodically to entice your dog’s sense of purpose and keep him/her positioned near the front of the belt. Slowly build up time and back off the treats. Eventually you will be dispensing treats at the end of the workout. Save this special treat only for the dog treadmill. As your dog gains confidence in the slower walking speed you can increase speed. End each session on a positive note with a lot of love and praise. A quick session of their favorite game, or stretching and a massage, will also help to build their treadmill affection.

Initially, you will find that a short treadmill workout will be more fatiguing than walking outside. Start slow and build up as you will be challenging both mental and physical abilities.

• Test the propeller at wide open throttle (WOT) varying trim and angle to determine maximum RPM and optimum performance.  Perform test in different conditions and various applications.
• Adding one inch of pitch reduces WOT RPM by 150 to 200 (RPM to high need to reduce).
• Subtracting one inch of pitch increases WOT RPM by 150 to 200 (RPM to low need to increase).
• Running the outboard motor at the incorrect RPM will have a negative effect on wear and tear.
