A National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) alumnus, Matthew Ogunsuada, has graduated with Distinction from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) after completing a Master of Science degree in Mass Communication.

Mr. Ogunsuada emerged as the Best Graduating Student for the 2023/2024 MSc Mass Communication set.

He earned a Second-Class Upper degree from the National Open University of Nigeria in 2023 before enrolling at the University of Lagos in pursuit of a more rigorous and conventional academic experience.

A broadcast journalist with Voice of the People Television (VOP TV), Ogunsuada hosts the education-focused programme Edu-Dialogue, while also working as a reporter, producer, and broadcast content developer.

An orphan who lost his mother at the age of seven and his father at sixteen, Ogunsuada’s academic and professional journey has been shaped by determination and grit.

NOUN Dismisses Claims of Tinubu's Directive on NYSC and Law School for Graduates

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has refuted recent reports alleging that President Bola Tinubu ordered the mobilization of its graduates for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Nigerian Law School.

Contrary to circulating claims, there is no evidence to suggest that Tinubu made such directives during his address at the 13th Convocation ceremony of the university. Reports had suggested that the president's remarks were conveyed by his representative, Noel Salihu, Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

In response to these allegations, NOUN issued a statement on Friday through its Director of Media and Publicity, Malam Ibrahim Sheme, denouncing the reports as false and misleading. The university clarified that the assertions did not align with the content of the Visitor's speech or the events of the Convocation Ceremony.

The statement, titled "Re: President Tinubu Directs Inclusion of National Open University Graduates in NYSC Scheme," emphasized that the news reports were based on an inaccurate version of the speech circulated on social media platforms.

NOUN emphasized its commitment to maintaining integrity and professionalism in all engagements, urging the public and stakeholders to rely on verified sources of information, particularly those directly affiliated with the university.

In conclusion, NOUN reiterated its dedication to upholding the highest standards and urged vigilance against misinformation.

I heartily congratulate those students who have the privilege of being admitted into the Faculty of Law.
As a starting point, you are encouraged to go through the Faculty Handbook.The handbook contains information that are vital in guiding the students and to assist them in the course of their study,in registration for the required number of core courses and the choice of the elective courses. For the avoidance of doubt, where an elective course is taken by a student in the first semester, the corresponding elective course must be taken in the second semester.

Please note that the Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN) is an essential aspect of all Law Faculties in Nigeria through which designated and approved activities such as Moot Court, general etiquette, Law dinner and election into various LAWSAN executive positions are conducted. LAWSAN is not a student union. All LAWSAN approved dues and payment must be made by all students.
It is mandatory, therefore, that all students of this prestigious Faculty should get copies of the handbook to serve as a guide in the pursuit of their LL.B programme because ignorance of the law is not an excuse. I commend this handbook to the entire students of the Faculty who aspire to be Law graduates and subsequently become learned gentlemen after call to Bar.

Welcome to the Faculty of Education (FOE) of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). The faculty which started as a school is one of the foundation faculties of the National Open University of Nigeria, and is fondly referred to as, the mother of all Faculties. The faculty is blessed with about eighty (80) full time academic staff and hundreds of other part time academic staff who are PhD holders in their various specializations, across the 36 states and the Federal Capital territory. There are five departments in the Faculty. Namely:

Arts and Social Science Education (ASSE)
Educational Foundations
Science Education
Health and Human Kinetic and
Library and Information Science

In all we have twenty-four (24) programmes presently, while more are awaiting NUC approval. The curricula are adequate and promote a blend of intellectual skills and practical training which open the door of employability to our graduates. As an ODL institution, our delivery method is second to none. Our students, aside the live class sessions, have access to the recording of every session, discussion and chat fora as well as materials in various formats (Videos, Journals, Magazines etc etc.) on their various pages; in addition to the regular course module. We also operate a 24-hour open door policy. We have a desk officer right in your centre to attend to your complaint and enquiries. This handbook is a maiden issued by the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (FAS) which contains the rules and regulations governing the undergraduate programmes in the Faculty. The handbook is a must for all students of the Faculty. The information contained in it is necessary for students’ registration, choice, of course, programme planning, duration of the study and other relevant information that will help the students during their stay in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). It also contains a brief history of the University and the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, the SIWES/Farm Practical Year, Laboratory practicals, as well as Teaching and Research Farm. The handbook is, therefore, necessary for all students who want to study Agricultural Sciences at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

NOUN VC MOURNS EX-DIRECTOR PROF. ALHASSAN

Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria NOUN), Professor Olufemi Peters, has described the death of the immediate past Director of Management Information Systems (MIS) at the university, Professor Muhtari Alhassan, as a monumental loss to the academic community.

Alhassan died in the early hours of Friday, March 22, 2024 after a brief illness.

The NOUN VC also said: “He was very simple and unassuming. A credible confidant indeed.”

Recalling the deceased academician’s pioneering work at the NOUN and his excellent character, Peters said, “It was one of the best decisions I took, at the very early stage on assumption of office as Vice-Chancellor, to appoint him the first Professor in our Department of Computer Science.

“Until his passing, Muhtari was the foundational director of MIS from 2016 - 2023 and was on leave of absence to pick up a VCship appointment elsewhere before his untimely passing.

“We cannot forget his work NOUN. Muhtari single-handedly designed and implemented the NOU students portal that handles students application for admission, students’ admission, registration and the exam scripts management system, among others, during which period he saved the university out of a deepened crisis.

“Aside from his role as DMIS, Muhtari also served in several committees in the university and was even instrumental to the selection of his successor at the MIS.

“Muhtari was a good man, an almost perfect gentle and simple man. He died a simple man.

“May God grant Muhtari Alhassan, mercy and eternal rest and grant his family the fortitude to bear his loss also.

Academic Calendar Changes 2023

Academic Calendar Changes.

We would like to bring to your attention some important updates regarding changes to the academic calendar. Please take note of the following information:

✅ Admission, course, and exam registration deadlines have been extended until Sunday, April 16th, 2023, at 11:59 pm. This means that individuals who are interested in obtaining NOUN forms may still do so and complete their registration before the closing date of April 16th, 2023.

✅ Furthermore, we would like to inform all new students that the Orientation and Matriculation ceremony has been rescheduled to April 17th and 18th, 2023.

✅ Regarding the Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs), TMA3 is out please note that none of the TMAs would close until the TMA3 closing date. With this extension, TMAs will be open until April 16th and beyond.

We understand that these changes may cause some concern, but we would like to assure you that there is no pressure..

One Billion Naira Alumni Village Appeal Funds Launch to Target Economic Empowerment.

The National Open University of Nigeria Alumni Association (NOUNAA) at the weekend launched an appeal fund of N1b (One Billion Naira) for Alumni Village in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The launch followed its maiden Public Lecture held at the NOUN, Abuja Model Study Centre with Professor Tomola M. Obamuyi of the Department of Economics, Federal University of Technology, Akure in Ondo State as guest lecturer which was held on the first day.

The theme is: “The roles of open university education in nation building”. The 2-day event was attended by some notable personalities in the country alongside the management of the university.

The National President of the association, Muntaka Abdul-Hadi Dabo in his address stated that the Alumni Village is principally targeted at having an entrepreneurial centre for skills acquisition as a contribution to eradicating joblessness in the society which he said was responsible for increasing rate of insecurity.

Abdul-Hadi Dabo said that the institution has continued to make positive impacts in the society recalling that some inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Centres have also become beneficiaries of the vision of the federal government for the establishment of the institution as they graduated recently while in custody as practiced in advanced countries of the world.

“It is amazing that one of the inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Centre recently emerged a best graduating student from the custody despite the incarceration which speaks volume on the great vision of NOUN which is taking education to the doorsteps of the people.

“As the largest alumni body in sub-Saharan Africa, NOUNAA will continue to set a model for others to follow towards having a desirable society”, Dabo stated.

He emphasized that the vision of the government through the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) eradicate illiteracy in the society should be embraced and supported by corporate bodies as a social responsibility arguing that by the approach of taking education closer to the people, it has resulted in reducing the number of uneducated in the society.

In recognition of the impacts the institution has made so far, the alumni association presented an award to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo whose administration as Nigeria’s president eventually established the university. Other awardees are former governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu; Emir of Hadejia, Alhaji Adamu Abubakar-Maje; Hon. Hajiya Inna Galadima and Dr. Samson Adewale Adegoke.

A former governor of Imo State, Owelle Senator Rochas Okorocha also received an award for his educational initiatives and generosity in empowering thousands of people from poor families to acquire education through his foundation.

An award was also presented to the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof Olufemi Peters for his ‘exceptionalism’ according to the NOUNAA President adding that his approach to issues since assumption of office has continued to take the institution to the next level in all ramifications citing the resolution of NOUN law graduates’ crisis who are presently at the Nigerian Law School. Other awardees include the Director, Advancement and Linkage, Mrs. Omorogieva E. Ileka and former NOUNAA National President, Mr. Fidelis Agunbiade, among recipients.

Mr. Abdul-Hadi Dabo also emphasized that the alumni association conceived the Alumni Village and to venture into economic empowerment programmes for its members and the general public as a way to reduce unemployment that many graduates face after leaving tertiary institution, and therefore called on well-meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies to partner and support the group in actualizing the great vision.

A) All those who have completed their programmes and have been cleared for convocation are to sign for and receive academic gowns and hoods from their respective Study Centres with effect from Monday, 18th March, 2022.

They are required to present the following for sighting at the points of collection of the items: i) Evidence of payment of a fee of Fifteen Thousand (N15,000.00) via remita for the use of Academic gowns and Convocation Register.

ii) A duly completed and authenticated clearance form issued at the Study Centre.

iii) Graduands are requested to duly complete and print the Alumni membership form which is accessible through the link below: www.advancementlinkages.nou.edu.ng.

Completed forms must be submitted to the Alumni Desk Officer Please note that Academic gowns and hoods must be returned to the respective Study Centres not later than 28th March, 2022.

B) All First class; Award winners; Master’s degree and Ph.D. graduands are requested to assemble at designated location(s) at the Convocation Arena on Saturday, 26th March, 2022 between 7.00a.m. and 8.00 a.m. They must be fully robed and on queue according to their Faculties.

NO ONE, INCLUDING GRADUANDS AND THEIR PARENTS/ GUARDIANS, WILL BE ADMITTED INTO THE VENUE, AFTER 9:00A.M.

C) Commercial Photographers/Video Operators who intend to operate at the University Headquarters, Abuja are requested to register to obtain clearance form from Bursary Department at the Headquarters, Jabi- Abuja from Monday 14th March, 2022.

Other interested operators outside Abuja are to register and obtain clearance form from Study Centre Directors at the various state capitals.

D) I. All Graduating Students must wear the prescribed academic gowns. The Security Officers will strictly enforce the “No gown, No entry” policy

II. No form of luggage or handbags will be allowed at the arena. Graduands are advised, without exception, to comply with this directive.

All guests of the University (properly identified with their Invitation cards) are to be seated not later than 8.30 a.m.

III. Parking lots have been provided for use at the designated areas within the University Campuses. Guests are to park their cars in areas indicated in their Invitation Cards.

E) Graduands are now at liberty to commence the various steps of clearance at their respective Study Centres.

F) Graduands are hereby informed that certificates are ready for collection and will be distributed as scheduled below: State Study Centres Venue

The joy of young people in Nigeria is to partake in the youthful event of NYSC to participate in the one year compulsory national service after their 4 years undergraduate programme and 5 years programme in other courses.

The question prospective and returning students ask about NYSC remains a concern for many. For the purpose of clarity, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) runs an open and distance learning system; as such, by the constitution, graduates of NOUN are issued Exclusion Letter by NYSC which is equal to the NYSC certificate given to those who went to Conventional University.
