Disruption between Pitsea and Grays expected until 15:00

Damage to the overhead wires between Pitsea and Stanford-le-Hope means that all lines are currently blocked. As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed or diverted via Basildon.

Disruption is expected until 15:00.

Customer Advice

Services running via Tilbury Town will be diverted via Basildon until further notice.

Rail replacement bus services are operating between Grays and Pitsea.

Tickets are also being accepted on the following:

London Buses route 370 between Chafford Hundred and Upminster.
First Buses on 100 and 200 routes between Basildon, Stanford-Le-Hope and Grays.

Disruption between London Charing Cross and London Bridge expected until 13:30

A fault with the signalling system between London Charing Cross and London bridge means some lines are blocked. As a result, trains may be delayed or revised. This is expected until 13:30.

What's happened?

A fault with the signalling system is affecting trains to and from London Charing Cross.

From around 13:00 to 13:50, trains won't be able to use platforms 1, 2 and 3 at London Charing Cross while response staff work to rectify the fault.

How does this affect my journey?

From 13:00 to 13:50, some trains will be diverted to run to and from London Cannon Street rather than London Charing Cross.

Some trains will still be able to run to and from London Charing Cross, using platforms 4, 5 and 6.

What do I need to do?

If your train is diverted, you can change at London Bridge for connecting services to and from London Charing Cross and London Waterloo East.

Due to action short of a strike called by the ASLEF Union, there will be a number of train service cancellations from Wednesday 17 to Friday 19 May. We recommend adding additional time to your journey and to check before you travel. You can find details of which services will be affected here.

Wednesday 31 May and Saturday 3 June

A reduced Greater Anglia service will operate on a limited number of routes. Most routes (including all regional lines) will have no service at all. Where services do run they will start later and finish earlier than normal, with start / finish times varying across the network.

Stansted Express from London Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport start at 04:40, then every 40 minutes past the hour until 23:25. Services from Stansted Airport to London Liverpool Street start at 05:42, then every 42 minutes past the hour until 23:42.

Due to strike action by ASLEF, the train drivers union, there will be NO Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink or Great Northern services running on Wednesday 31 May or Saturday 3 June.

Wednesday 17 to Saturday 20 May:

An amended timetable with fewer services will be in place this week. Services which are running will be busier than usual. It is likely you will need to queue and you may not be able to board your chosen service. You should allow extra time to complete your journey.

There will be no Gatwick Express service for the whole week. Gatwick Airport will still be served by Southern and Thameslink.

On Saturday 20 May, Southern and Thameslink services (south of London) will start later and finish earlier than normal with some stations not being served the whole day.

You must check your journey before you travel.

Thursday 1 June:

The Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern and Gatwick Express service for Saturday 1 June has yet to be confirmed.

On all dates where train services are available during this period of industrial action, we recommend that you plan your journey carefully and expect longer waiting times and busier trains.

Advice for CrossCountry customers:

Trains will be revised to run in 2 portions; between Bournemouth and Didcot Parkway and between Oxford and Manchester Piccadilly. Limited replacement road transport is in operation between Didcot Parkway and Oxford.

Customers travelling between Bournemouth / Reading and Banbury / Birmingham / Manchester are advised to travel via London stations or Bristol stations. This is due to limited availability of road transport at Didcot Parkway.

To assist with your journey, you may use your ticket on the following at no extra cost:

Avanti West Coast via any reasonable route
Chiltern Railways via any reasonable route
Great Western Railway via any reasonable route
London Northwestern Railway via any reasonable route
London Underground via any reasonable route
South Western Railway between Bournemouth and London Waterloo

Advice for Great Western Railway customers:

If you decide not to travel, you can claim a full refund or amend your ticket - you can do this via the same method you purchased your original ticket.

Appleford, Culham and Radley stations will not be served, whilst the line is closed.

Alternative travel options:

Limited rail replacement transport is in operation between Didcot Parkway and Oxford. Some buses will run direct between the 2 stations and some will call at Appleford, Culham and Radley. Rail replacement buses are likely to be very busy and customers should expect significant delays to their journey.

To assist with your journey, you may use your ticket on the following at no extra cost:

Avanti West Coast via any reasonable route
Chiltern Railways via any reasonable route (please note, Chiltern Railways services to and from Oxford will be extremely busy)
London Underground via any reasonable route
Stagecoach Buses route S6
Thames Travel route X2 and X32 between Didcot and Oxford
Transport for Wales between Newport and Hereford, where you can change for a GWR service to London Paddington
West Midlands Railway via any reasonable route

Customers planning to travel between Oxford and London may find it more convenient to start their journey at Didcot Parkway.

Customers travelling between London Paddington and Oxford / North Cotswolds will need to change at Didcot Parkway or Oxford for a non-stop replacement bus service, adding about 45 minutes to journey times. Please note, a road closure near to Oxford station which may increase the journey time depending on traffic conditions.

Customers from Hanborough and the wider Oxford area (Radley, Culham, Appleford) are advised to consider travelling to Didcot by road and using the multi-storey car park.

Customers travelling between Worcestershire Parkway / Pershore / Evesham and London should consider travelling via Bristol Parkway or Birmingham.

Customers travelling between Honeybourne / Combe and London should travel via Oxford for connecting services.

Why is the line closed?

Network Rail has closed the railway between Didcot Parkway and Oxford, whilst their engineers continue their assessment of Nuneham Viaduct.

Nuneham Viaduct, which carries the Cherwell Valley Line across the River Thames, is located between Culham and Radley, near to the town of Abingdon in Oxfordshire.

Network Rail has been monitoring the viaduct for some time because of its movement and has been undertaking engineering interventions to stabilise it. Unfortunately, the movement in the structure has significantly worsened in recent weeks and has now reached a point where it is not safe to carry passenger and freight trains. That is why Network Rail has taken the significant step of temporarily closing it.

Network Rail are responsible for more than 20,000 miles of track and 30,000 bridges across England, Scotland and Wales. Their engineering teams constantly monitor these bridges and viaducts, checking structural aspects and carrying out repairs as required.
