Benefits from Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 Extended for 2013

On January 1, 2013 the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 was passed. This bill includes energy tax extensions for replacement windows and exterior doors purchased and installed in primary residences from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2013 that meet the criteria.

The tax credit for windows is 10% of the purchase price up to $200 while the tax credit for exterior doors is 10% up to $500. Installation and labor cost do not apply.

There is a lifetime limit of $500 ($200 for windows) in total credits. This includes any credits applied after Dec. 31, 2005 to Dec. 31, 2013.

         To be eligible for the tax credit, windows and exterior doors must:

Meet the Energy Star® guidelines for the appropriate Climate Zone. Click to see Energy Star® Zones.
Be installed in the taxpayer's primary residence.
Be installed in an existing home.
Be purchased and installed from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2013.

         To claim a tax credit:

Homeowners need to file IRS Form 5695 along with their federal income tax return for the year the improvement is made. The credit will be subtracted from the amount of tax owed or added to tax refund.
Keep receipts and the NFRC label from each qualifying window or exterior door for tax records.
Retain a Manufacturer's Certification Statement (MCS) for your own tax records, but do not attach this to the tax return.

ENERGY CODE CHANGES IN THE FLORIDA BUILDING CODE

As of March 15, 2012, Florida will have a separate code devoted to Energy. The chart shows the criteria that must be met.

Insulated glass along with low-e coatings or some tints such as solar cool will be required to meet the new energy code values. Nearly all PGT products, whether aluminum or vinyl, have many glass options that comply with this new code.
Check the NFRC values before purchasing windows and leave the temporary label on the product for county field inspections.

U.S. President Barack Obama laid out the details of his new HOMESTAR program, nicknamed "Cash for Caulkers," which would provide on-the-spot government rebates to homeowners who make their homes more energy-efficient by installing new windows, doors, insulation and other materials from an approved list.
But don't rush down just yet. The proposal is still working its way through Congress, which must authorize funding before the program can be set up and any money can change hands.

Do your old window screens need replacing?

How to measure your old window screens for replacement:

•Measurements are normally stated in width and then height
•Measure to the nearest 1/16 inch
•Measure to the outside edge of the window screen frame
•Measure near the corners as sometimes the middle may be bowed

How does that water get on the inside of windows and what can I do about it? Condensation on the inside of a window is the result of a higher air moisture content contacting lower temperatures on the glass. The higher the interior humidity & the lower the outside temperature, the more condensation can occur. Excessive interior humidity can lead to structural damage. Wood rot, mold & mildew can result.
Helpful hints:
~Check sashes for smooth adequate operation.
~Use exhaust fans, especially when showering.
~Install & use a dehumidifier.
~Use ceiling fans to circulate air.
~Open windows & doors whenever possible to allow interior moisture to escape.

DO clean glass with a mixture of mild dish soap and water.
DO rinse completely with clear water, then wipe dry with a soft cloth to avoid water spots.
DO clean screens by removing, the washing on a flat surface with mild soap and water and a soft brush. Rinse, wipe dry and reinstall.

DON'T wash glass in direct sunlight.
DON'T use petroleum-based cleaners or caustic chemicals on your glass.
DON'T use a razor blade, putty knife or abrasive pad to clean the glass as they may cause permanent damage to the finish or the glass.
DON'T use a high-pressure spray nozzle when rinsing your windows.
