As a participant in the 2011 Children’s Miracle Network Hospital (CMNH) Campaign, Love’s travel stops in the Columbus market raised $30,357 for Nationwide Children’s Hospital, making them one of the CMNH top locations for percentage increase from 2010. In addition, the Jeffersonville Hardee’s®, which is operated by Love’s, raised more than $10,000. This was the #1 restaurant location for Love’s during the CMNH campaign.

“We are extremely grateful to have a partnership with Love’s Travel Stops,” said Susan Brewer, Assistant Director for Annual Giving with the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Our patients and families will benefit greatly from their commitment and dedication to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Our friends at Love’s and the Jeffersonville Hardee’s will continue to set high goals for fundraising in order to improve the quality of healthcare to children in our communities.”

Believing that ‘giving back’ to each community in which they operate is an important factor in their success, Love’s has participated in the CMNH Campaign for 13 years raising more than $5.8 million for children’s hospitals nationwide.

Hardee’s Food Systems is a wholly owned subsidiary of CKE Restaurants, Inc. Today, the Nationwide Insurance Columbus Marathon and Nationwide Insurance are making Nationwide Children’s Hospital the title beneficiary of the annual running and walking event, renaming it the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon.

The agreement is for three years and takes effect immediately. The goal of the partnership is to engage the community while gaining corporate and participant support of Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s non-profit mission.

Nationwide Insurance remains as one of the event’s lead sponsors and will continue providing corporate support. Nationwide Insurance has been a key sponsor of the Marathon since the event’s inception in 1980.

“We are excited about this transition as we continue our involvement with the newly named Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon and 1/2 Marathon,” said Chad Jester, Vice President, Corporate Citizenship, Nationwide Insurance. “The annual running and walking event has become nationally renowned and showcases tens of thousands of people who participate as athletes, volunteers and spectators. We see the engagement with the hospital as another great opportunity for the entire community to further support the life-saving work undertaken at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.”

Bill Burns, Chairman of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon Board of Trustees, said the group is honored to be a part of this.

“Adding Nationwide Children’s Hospital as our title beneficiary significantly increases the positive impact our event has on the entire community,” Burns said. “We could not ask for a better corporate partner than Nationwide Insurance, as they have stood with us since day one. The sky is the limit in terms of how this powerful collaboration will benefit the participants, volunteers and sponsors, and the entire Columbus community, and of course, what it can mean for the hospital.”

Steve Allen, M.D. and chief executive officer of Nationwide Children’s Hospital, added, “We want to recognize Nationwide Insurance for once again coming forward to support both the Marathon and the hospital in their role as one of our community’s most engaged corporate leaders. We also thank the Columbus Marathon for selecting Nationwide Children’s Hospital as their title beneficiary. This event is already nationally recognized as America’s best-organized marathon and is always one of the biggest events on the Columbus calendar. As the City celebrates its Bicentennial year, the hospital marks its 120th year of providing the best possible care to children regardless of a family’s ability to pay. We can only do this thanks to tremendous community support and partnerships like the one we’ve announced today.”

To kick-off the spirit of charitable giving, the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon is issuing a “call to commit” to this year’s participants – the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon will match the first $100,000 in donations that are raised for the hospital by participants in the 2012 race. Fundraising participants are part of Children’s Champions - a team of athletes who dedicate their race to the kids of Nationwide Children’s. Hopes are that other corporate partners will provide similar matching opportunities to encourage fundraising efforts.

“We are honored to have such a favorable impact on our community, and this new relationship will help us do even more good work,” said Darris Blackford, Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon Race Director. “Running and walking can be good for your health, and can make a difference in the lives of others, too.”

In addition, there are several new components that will pay tribute to and honor the millions of patients Nationwide Children’s Hospital cares for annually. Each of the 26 miles, deemed the “Miracle Miles”, will be dedicated to a “Patient Champion” – a current patient of Nationwide Children’s. The community will have the opportunity to nominate a child as a Patient Champion (more information about nominating a child will be shared at a later date). Patient Champions will also be involved in other aspects of the event, from cheering participants on at the finish line, to presenting the marathon medals. Each Miracle Mile can be sponsored by a corporate or community organization in which the partners hope to have full engagement.

Today, the partners are also excited to announce the very first Patient Champion who will represent the inaugurally sponsored “Nationwide Insurance Miracle Mile” – Alison Hile. Alison, 11, is the daughter of Doug and Jill Hile (Hilliard, OH) who are both associates at Nationwide Insurance. Alison has been a patient of Nationwide Children’s since she was just days old when she was first diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. The Hile family leads an active lifestyle and loves to run which is actually very healthy for Alison’s lungs and is an important part of her continued treatment as a patient living with cystic fibrosis.

The announcement of this partnership comes on the heels of a recent economic impact study conducted by Fisher Business Services at The Ohio State University that estimated the lifetime economic impact of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon’s 32-year history to be more than $154 million, including $13 million in 2011.

Additionally announced today were several special Bicentennial activities to commemorate the City’s Bicentennial. These include special recognitions honoring the city at the Race Expo, Start Line and Celebration Village; every 200th finisher will get a special award; hundreds of athletes will hold up large Bicentennial banners at the start line that will feature the 200Columbus logo, which will make for spectacular aerial photographs; all participants in the Children’s Run will wear #200 on their runner bibs; and much more.

The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon has helped raise millions of dollars as a fundraising mechanism for many charities over its 32-year history, including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training, the Hospice Foundation’s Run to Remember, The Susan G. Komen For the Cure’s Marathon for the Cure and the American Cancer Society’s Team Determination. These and other charities will be encouraged to continue their fundraising efforts under the new agreement.

The focus of the organization is to financially support cochlear implant programs, tell the world about cochlear implants, how cochlear implants work, how bilateral implantation has changed our lives, and how cochlear implants can change the lives of thousands of deaf individuals. Many people are moderately deaf and benefit from hearing aids. There is a large group of severe to profoundly deaf people who receive no benefit from hearing aids, but they can benefit from cochlear implants. Simply put, Songs for Sound was established to restore hearing to the deaf through the miracle of cochlear implants--- Give the gift of sound thru song, so they, too, can hear and heal through music.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Cochlear Implant Program and Hearing Clinic
Nationwide Children’s Hospital is dedicated to helping infants and children with hearing loss/deafness and other communication challenges reach their highest potential for a full and productive life through therapeutic intervention and cutting edge technology.

The Nationwide Children’s team assesses each patient and makes medical recommendations including further diagnostic testing, appropriate assistive listening devices and surgeries including cochlear implants. Parents are given information to connect resources in education and speech and language development. It is their mission to provide a family-centered visit where patients and families leave feeling educated and supported as they work to help their child with hearing loss.

During the holidays, we reflect on loved ones who have touched our lives and hearts. In 2003, Christine Wilson and four of her friends perished in a tragic arson near the campus of The Ohio State University. To honor her precious life, the 8th annual “Christine’s Christmas” will be presented. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the concert beginning at 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the Capitol Theatre, Vern Riffe Center in downtown Columbus. Proceeds from the event benefit the Burn Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Christine had a passion for bettering the lives of those around her, particularly children, and this special concert keeps that passion – and her memory – alive. Through the Burn Program at Nationwide Children’s, nearly 1,500 patients are treated and cared for each and every year. Funds from Christine’s Christmas will ensure that the highest level of care for thermally injured children and adolescents continues at the hospital.

The concert features pianist Mark King who, inspired by his friend Christine, performs Christine’s Christmas. He is joined on stage by special guests including vocalist Willie Grové, Chamber Music Connection Orchestra, Jerome High School A Cappella Choir, event emcee Chuck Strickler of WBNS-10TV and a variety of musical talent.

The performance is followed by an elaborate dessert and coffee bar in the Capitol Theatre lobby overlooking the breathtaking view of the Capitol building. In addition, guests can finish their holiday shopping by taking part in a silent auction.

Reservations are $75 for adults and $25 for students/children. To make reservations, please visit www.NationwideChildrens.org/ChristinesChristmas or call (614) 355-0888.

The event is presented by MACY’s and underwritten by major sponsors Battelle, Tiffany & Company, Scott’s Miracle Gro, Dr. William Shiels and The Wilson Family. In addition, long- time media sponsor, WBNS-10TV, is joined by The River 104.9 radio, Old Trail Printing and Made From Scratch catering.

The Christine Wilson Foundation was formed to honor the memory of Christine Wilson who, on April 13, 2003, perished in a tragic fire near The Ohio State University campus along with four friends. Her family and friends honor Christine’s love of giving through the Christine Wilson Foundation. Since its inception, the Foundation has raised more than $250,000 for Columbus charities. The Foundation’s mission is to provide annual scholarships to incoming freshmen planning to attend Bishop Watterson High School and to reach out to other Columbus community charities involving children. Kroger customers confirmed “Kids Come First” when they donated $100,000 to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, during Child Safety Month in September. Kroger will match the donation for a $200,000 total contribution to Children’s Hospital on November 2nd at 10am Bruce Macaulay, president, The Kroger Co., Columbus Division, will make the check presentation.

Funds contributed will support Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s mission to provide the highest quality of care for all children regardless of their ability to pay. Kroger raised the money by offering coin boxes in every central Ohio Kroger store and selling paper basketballs promoted with signage featuring Thad Matta, The Ohio State University’s men’s head basketball coach.

“Keeping kids healthy and happy is a team effort that spreads across the entire community,” Matta said. “I am pleased to be involved with this fundraising opportunity to help create miracles for children whose families may not be able to afford medical attention.”

More than 2,700 children enter Nationwide Children’s Hospital every day seeking help, hope and the promise of a miracle. The hospital cares for every child—no young person is ever turned away because of the family’s inability to pay.

“Children often suffer most during difficult economic times because they have no control over their circumstances,” Macaulay said. “We are grateful to our customers for their tremendous response and willingness to reach deeply into their pockets to help kids in central Ohio enjoy a better quality of life.”

“Thank you to Kroger, Coach Matta and the entire central Ohio community for their continued support of Nationwide Children’s Hospital,” said Steve Allen, MD, chief executive officer of Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “It is with the support of our local community that we are able to care for our patients and their families – so that they can stay right here in central Ohio to receive the finest pediatric care.”

This marked the first year for the “Kids Come First” fundraiser, with Kroger planning to make the campaign an annual tradition to benefit Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

In addition to Matt and Benjamin, “Team Benjamin” includes mom, Diane, sister, Emily and 18 additional friends and family members who are running either the full marathon or half-marathon to raise money and awareness for both Nationwide Children’s Hospital and United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Cleveland (UCP).

“We are excited about participating in the Columbus Marathon because it provides a great platform to raise awareness and funds for two great organizations that are changing the lives of hundreds of disabled children and their families,” says Matt. “The money we raise from running in the marathon will help Nationwide Children’s and UCP continue to provide physical and occupational therapy, medical support and other programs to children with cerebral palsy or other physical and mental disabilities.”

Team Benjamin’s fundraising goal for the Columbus Marathon is $50,000. Whatever total is raised will be split between the two organizations.

”We are honored and inspired by this effort, and we challenge the community to support Team Benjamin – or to create their own team in honor of a loved one,” said Alyson Doyle, assistant director of Annual Giving at Nationwide Children's Hospital Foundation.

During the last three years, Team Benjamin has raised more than $100,000 for United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Cleveland through participation in the Cleveland Triathlon. Last year, at age six, Benjamin walked across the finish line with the support of his mom and dad. This year Benjamin couldn’t walk because he had recently undergone major hip surgery that left him in a half-body cast for six weeks, but Benjamin was comfortable enough to sit in the jogger for the running portion of the race. Now with his cast off and in therapy to soon walk again, Benjamin will be ready to accompany his dad on the 26-plus mile trek through the streets and neighborhoods of Columbus on October 16.

“The people at UCP have made a tremendous difference in our lives by greatly improving Ben's physical abilities and quality of life. Every day, Ben does things that we once thought would be impossible – simple things such as walking, holding a cup or even pointing. Ben’s progress has allowed our family to live more empowered, independent lives,” says Matt. “Because we know our story is one that is shared by many families of disabled children all across Ohio who are served by terrific organizations like UCP and Nationwide Children’s, and because we have so many good friends in Columbus who have been so supportive over the years, we decided to expand our awareness-building and fundraising efforts beyond the Cleveland community.”

Anyone wanting to join Team Benjamin at the Columbus Marathon on October 16, 2011 is encouraged to contact Matt via email at teambenjaminucp@gmail.com.

Kohl’s Department Store, through the Kohl’s Cares® cause merchandise program, will announce a $306,153 donation to Nationwide Children’s Hospital during a check presentation ceremony Sunday, September 18, 2011 at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium’s Fall Festival. The donations were collected from Kohl’s stores located in the central Ohio area. Kohl’s has gifted more than $2.5 million to Nationwide Children’s since 1999.

“The Kohl’s Cares program has been instrumental in funding wellness and injury prevention programs at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Their commitment is helping us keep kids safe and provide a valuable service to our community,” said Niki Shafer, vice president of Annual Giving at Nationwide Children’s.

The more than $300,000 donated by Kohl’s this year funds the K.I.S.S. (Kohl’s Is Sold on Safety) program at Nationwide Children’s. K.I.S.S., implemented by the hospital in 2010 through the generous support of Kohl’s, is designed to educate the community on the prevention of the most common injuries seen in the emergency department at Nationwide Children’s. Education topics include fire, car seat, bike and winter sports safety. Each season, an educational activity booklet and coloring contest are made available to the public, and children become eligible to win prizes by coloring and submitting the contest page.

During the Fall Festival this weekend at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, K.I.S.S. will be a special part of the Jack Hanna “Animals on Safari” stage. At the event, there will be educational materials from Nationwide Children’s about how kids and parents can play it safe during the fall and winter seasons. There will also be a bike helmet giveaway to outfit children with proper head protection for biking and fall/winter activities.

Kohl’s commitment to Nationwide Children’s is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares® cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl’s sells $5 books and plush toys with 100 percent of net profit benefits children’s health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships like this one. Kohl’s has raised more than $180 million dollars nationwide through this merchandise program. In addition to the merchandise program, Kohl’s Cares® features the Kohl’s Cares® Scholarship Program, which last year recognized more than 2,100 young volunteers with a total of $410,000 in scholarships and prizes. Through Kohl’s Associates in Action volunteer program, more than 385,000 associates have donated more than 1.2 million hours of their time since 2001, and Kohl’s has donated more than $35 million to youth-focused nonprofit organizations. Kohl’s also offers fundraising gift cards for schools and youth-serving organizations. The Columbus Hyundai Dealers joined Hyundai Motor America today in awarding Nationwide Children’s Hospital with a Hyundai Scholar Grant in the amount of $50,000. The funds will be given to Dr. Natasha Pillay-Smiley, a fellow at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, for her research that will be focused on looking at the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family of proteins, which is known to play a role in osteosarcoma. Her research will look for inhibitors of these proteins, which could become new chemotherapeutic agents in the future.

The grant will be officially presented to Pillay-Smiley during a Hope on Wheels Handprint Ceremony at Nationwide Children’s Hospital on July 27th at 10am, where area children affected by cancer will place their handprints in colorful paint on a Santa Fe car – to commemorate their brave battles with cancer.

In 2011, Hope on Wheels will award research grants to 50 children’s hospitals across the country. The grant recipients, known as a “Hyundai Scholar,” will receive a combined total of $2.7 million from Hyundai Hope on Wheels. Each of these 50 Hyundai Scholar grants will go toward funding new pediatric cancer research projects, and will be presented during a Hope on Wheels Handprint Ceremony.

During Childhood Cancer Awareness month, Hyundai will donate additional grants in the amount of $100,000 each through a competitive September Hope Grants program. The September program allows Children’s Oncology Group (COG) member institutions seeking funding in areas of childhood cancer research to apply for the grants, which are then reviewed by Hyundai’s board of medical directors and awarded to hospitals around the U.S.

The 2011 program marks the 13th straight year of Hope of Wheels’ mission to fight childhood cancer, and the program will donate a total of $10.2 million to children’s hospitals across the nation, a 15 percent increase from last year. Along the way, Hyundai’s National Youth Ambassador and pediatric cancer survivor, Brianna Commerford, 13, will join Hyundai for a second year at children’s hospital Handprint Ceremonies all over the country. Brianna battled Stage IV Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and is now sharing her story with children, families, medical staff and communities at Hyundai Hope on Wheels ceremonies.

“Hyundai and our dealers are committed to finding a cure for childhood cancer– a cause we have been dedicated to for the past 13 years,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “At Hyundai, we thrive on new thinking and new possibilities, and Hope on Wheels supports doctors and hospitals doing just that – creating new possibilities that could someday cure childhood cancer. I’m extremely proud that each year, Hyundai and its dealers have surpassed our commitment to this cause and by the end of this year, we will have donated more than $34 million to the cause. Our goal is to support the important research that will find a cure for this dreaded disease.”

During Childhood Cancer Awareness month this September, Hyundai Hope on Wheels will visit 60 more hospitals in states across the country to donate $100,000 grants to hospital programs dedicated to childhood cancer research. The 4th Annual Megan’s Miles Run/Walk, benefitting Muscular Dystrophy research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, will be held on Sunday, May 29 at noon at Central Crossing High School.

Attendees are encouraged to lace up their shoes and run or walk in this special fundraiser in honor of a Nationwide Children’s employee who passed away four years ago in a tragic car accident. Megan Schlaegel was a part of the research team at Nationwide Children’s and was involved in researching cures for muscular dystrophy.

In honor of her passion to find a cure, this event was organized by the family and friends of the Schlaegel family with the help of the Columbus Running Company Charity Fund. In 2010, Megan’s Miles raised more than $15,000 Nationwide Children’s and the team hopes to double last year’s contributions.

The 4-mile run and 1.5-mile walk will begin and end at Central Crossing High School. Registration is $17 per person, $12 per person for groups/families of three or more, or $22 the day of the race. To register for Megan’s Miles, visit www.columbusrunning.com.

The Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance introduced today the inaugural Legends Luncheon presented by Nationwide Insurance, a new tradition that brings to life the recently established alliance between the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. All proceeds of the Legends Luncheon directly benefit the young patients treated and cared for each day at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

The goal of the Luncheon is to increase awareness of and further advance the incredible care given in the most needed areas of Nationwide Children’s. To that end, the sold-out Luncheon raised $250,000 in its inaugural year for the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation and Nationwide Children’s Hospital alliance.

True to the heart of Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance includes as one of its primary objectives a genuine, philanthropic vision. Embodied in the Memorial’s longstanding partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital and enhanced by the recent alliance with Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, pediatric care is at the center of each campaign and event these entities jointly execute.

First-year Tournament sponsor, Nationwide Insurance, shares a similar tradition of support for Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Nationwide is committed to broadening the impact of its presenting sponsorship of the Memorial Tournament to bring greater awareness and increased funding to Nationwide Children’s Hospital and to those who benefit the most – families and children in need of care.

Hosts of The Legends Luncheon presented by Nationwide Insurance were Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, together with Nationwide CEO Steve Rasmussen and his wife, Cindy, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital CEO, Steve Allen and his wife, Jamie. Luncheon guests experienced a charity event that is unique to Columbus, Ohio. Held at the beautiful and historic Ohio Statehouse, guests enjoyed a rare opportunity to witness a special conversation with Memorial Tournament Host and Founder Jack Nicklaus and LPGA Hall of Fame member and 2011 Memorial Tournament Honoree Nancy Lopez. CBS Sports golf broadcaster and best-selling author David Feherty moderated this unique discussion.

In addition, as a part of the inaugural Legends Luncheon presented by Nationwide Insurance, an annual recognition award was announced in the name of Jack and Barbara Nicklaus. The “Nicklaus Youth Spirit Award” is to be given annually to a young citizen who in some way has demonstrated a strong, driving spirit in overcoming obstacles, an unwavering optimistic outlook, and a strong conviction for their connection to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Whether it is by leadership in their community or simply personification of a strong spirit, a patient of Nationwide Children’s Hospital can inspire not only their family and loved ones, but also the community that surrounds them. The Nicklaus Youth Spirit Award will honor the courage within that inspires volunteerism and community outreach and has a positive influence on others.

The culmination of the Legends Luncheon was the moving presentation by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus of the first Nicklaus Youth Spirit Award to former Nationwide Children’s Hospital patient Caitie Bogenrief, 19, of Dublin, Ohio.

Caitie was born eight weeks premature and rushed from the birth hospital to Nationwide Children’s. She underwent lifesaving surgery just days after she was born and spent two months in the Memorial Tournament Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, gaining strength and growing until her parents could take their first child home. Caitie began giving back at an early age and has since volunteered for more than a half-dozen meaningful causes. Those who know her well recognize her for her gentle manner, kind spirit, huge heart and great sense of compassion for those in need, especially children.

Today, on Valentines Day, Nationwide Children’s Hospital joined with partners from Nationwide Insurance and the City of Columbus to introduce “Miracles At Play” – what the hospital hopes to be a community-wide movement aimed at celebrating the many miracles that take place each and every day at the hospital. To help kick-off Miracles At Play, a dramatic new downtown wallscape featuring the “Miracle 7” children was unveiled today. Donated by Nationwide Insurance, it towers 12 stories above downtown Columbus at 8 E. Long Street, and is one of the largest wallscape advertisements of its kind in the country.

There is no cost for the public to become a part of the movement, anyone can join and joining is as easy as doing one of four things:
1.) Go to MiraclesAtPlay.org and sign-up by sharing your name and e-mail address.
2.) “Like” the hospital on Facebook. The hospital’s Facebook page is accessible via MiraclesAtPlay.org.
3.) Follow the hospital on Twitter (@nationwidekids and also accessible via MiraclesAtPlay.org).
4.) Share your own miracle story – how you or your family has been affected by the hospital – at MiraclesAtPlay.org.

Additionally, members of the community can help Nationwide Children’s generate as much as $100,000 through the Miracles At Play Kick-Off Challenge simply by signing up to support the movement. The goal of the Challenge is for 100,000 people to join the Miracles At Play. For the first 100,000 people to join, Wolfe Associates, Inc. will donate $1 per person to the hospital. The Challenge is just the beginning of Miracles At Play, and what Nationwide Children’s hopes to be an on-going community effort.

“Wolfe Associates, Inc. is proud to partner with Nationwide Children’s Hospital as the presenting sponsor of the Miracles At Play Kick-Off Challenge,” said John F. Wolfe of Wolfe Associates, Inc. “We hope that the public will embrace the challenge and join the movement to support the hospital. We encourage other businesses to come online and join us in getting involved.”

After joining the movement, supporters will learn more about inspirational stories from inside Nationwide Children’s, and be able to share their own miracle story (as patients and families). As part of the movement, they will also have the opportunity to support the hospital through events and on-line activities such as sending e-greeting cards to hospitalized patients and other activities in the coming months.

“Nationwide is very proud of our long tradition of supporting Nationwide Children’s Hospital,” said Chad Jester, vice president of Corporate Citizenship at Nationwide Insurance. “We know from experience that creating a downtown wallscape is a great way to generate buzz in the community. We thought it would be a great way to help the hospital get off to a strong start with Miracles At Play.”

City of Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman joined officials from Nationwide Children’s, Nationwide Insurance and the Miracle 7 kids and their families during today’s celebration at Nationwide.

“The people of Columbus have so many reasons to be proud of their great city,” said Mayor Coleman. “Today, on our city’s 199th birthday, we begin the countdown to the 2012 Bicentennial. One of the most significant initiatives we will celebrate next year will be the opening of the new main hospital tower at Nationwide Children’s. Our children’s hospital is a point of pride for Columbus, and it has been a catalyst for economic growth in our community. Nationwide Children’s has grown up in our city – from humble beginnings to becoming nationally recognized as a leader in pediatric health care and research. As we look to what will be a year-long celebration in 2012, Nationwide Children’s will hold a special place among the many accomplishments this city has made in its 200 years.”

Abigail Wexner, chair of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Board of Directors, was on hand to help dedicate the wallscape and launch Miracles At Play.

“On an average day, nearly 3,000 children and their families turn to Nationwide Children’s,” said Mrs. Wexner. “We are here to provide the absolute best care for every one of them with the nation’s finest pediatric physicians, researchers and staff. Most importantly, no child is turned away because of the family’s inability to pay. This is only possible because of the amazing support we have here in Columbus. Miracles are made possible at Nationwide Children’s because the people in this community care so much about all of our kids.”

“We believe that the central Ohio community will embrace Miracles At Play by joining the movement in an effort to support the hospital,” said Steve Allen, MD, chief executive officer of Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “We hear every day from parents who are grateful for the healthy children in their lives. This is a way for everyone in the community to join us to help the children who are still waiting for their miracle to happen. It is great way to get inspired and involved with Nationwide Children’s. We are so appreciative to Nationwide Insurance and Wolfe Associates for their support.”

About the Miracle 7
Alison, Anna, Ian, Lucas, PJ, Rylan and Savanna – the “Miracle 7” – are the heart and soul of the Miracles At Play wallscape and movement. The seven children, all depicted in the wallscape, are either patients of Nationwide Children’s or are connected to the hospital, and each have a dramatic story to tell. They represent the millions of stories and miracles that have happened at the hospital since it first opened nearly 120 years ago. Here’s a little more about them …

Alison Hile, 10, from Hilliard (on the swing)
When Alison was born, she had an obstruction in her bowel and had to have surgery at just 2 days old. Not long after surgery, she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. To this day, Alison continues to receive treatment at Nationwide Children’s. She is a bright, active fourth grader who loves playing with her twin sister, their labradoodle, Darby, and their many friends.

Anna Hahn, 8, from Upper Arlington (on the teeter totter, left)
Anna has had asthma for many years, but it had always been controlled by medication. One evening her inhaler could not keep up with her breathing difficulties, so her parents took her to an emergency department. Within minutes of examining her, the doctor told her parents she needed to go to Nationwide Children’s by ambulance. Upon arrival at the hospital, an emergency team was waiting for her. She spent four days in the intensive care unit – one lung was fully collapsed and another was partially collapsed. Doctors carefully monitored her and prescribed the right combination of medications and treatment to heal her. Anna continues to monitor her asthma but does not let it get in the way of her active lifestyle as a second grader.

Ian Sanchez, 5, from Washington Court House (on the slide)
When medications could not heal Ian’s failing heart, the team at Nationwide Children’s led his family through their long and difficult journey to his heart transplant. Ian was only 3 months old when he had his heart transplant. Today he is a healthy, active little boy, with three older sisters who he loves to play with.
Lucas Byers, 7, from Hilliard (on the monkey bars)
After Lucas’ little sister, Sophie, underwent successful brain surgery at Nationwide Children’s, Lucas decided he wanted to thank the doctors and nurses that helped his little sister. He did so by setting up a lemonade stand at his house and raised $40 to help sick kids get better.

PJ Lavette, 5, from Marion (on the swing)
PJ was very thin and looked very tired when he first came to the Endocrinology Clinic at Nationwide Children’s. It was then, at just 15 months old that PJ was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. His doctor, who has cared for PJ for the last four years, taught his parents how to treat his condition with regular insulin injections. Today, while still battling the disease, PJ is no longer tired. By doing daily blood-sugar checks and taking his medication, PJ and his parents are able to manage his diabetes, allowing PJ be the active little boy he has always been.

Rylan Bell, 2, from Reynoldsburg (playing on the grass)
Rylan was born 19 weeks premature, weighing only a pound and measuring just 10 inches long. He was one of the tiniest babies cared for by the skilled neonatal medicine team at Nationwide Children’s. While in the neonatal intensive care unit, Rylan underwent five surgeries. Today, Rylan is a thriving toddler with a huge smile that will light up any room.

Savanna Bartley, 7, from Pickerington (on the teeter totter, right)
When Savanna was just 2-years-old, she experienced abnormal leg pain. A bone marrow test revealed that she was suffering from ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia). Savanna immediately began a rigorous chemotherapy and radiation treatment plan at Nationwide Children’s. Today, she is doing extremely well and continues follow-up care at the hospital. Savanna enjoys her school work, teachers and friends in the second grade.

More about the Miracles At Play Wallscape
The wallscape, nearly 150 feet tall and 21,000 square feet in its entirety, is one of the largest wallscape advertisements of its kind in the country. Each of the Miracle 7 kids is about four stories tall, and if standing next to the mural, each child is about as tall as their own shoe. The teeter-tooter alone weighs nearly 5,000 pounds, and the entire wallscape comes in at approximately 15,000 pounds.

The wallscape, donated by Nationwide Insurance, was designed by Engauge (Columbus, Ohio) and created by Orange Barrel Media (Grove City, Ohio). Bender Imaging (Columbus, Ohio) conducted photo shoots with the Miracle 7 children at outside locations in Columbus. Their retouching team then created the giant visuals seen on the wallscape today.

Fabrication on all the parts and pieces of the wallscape first began mid December 2010 at Orange Barrel’s warehouse and was completed the end of January 2011. Installation at the Atlas Building in downtown Columbus began on January 27, 2011 and was just completed this morning, February 14. Current terms call for the wallscape to be up until fall 2011.

Previously, the space was home to notable Nationwide Insurance wallscapes featuring a larger than life Fabio transformed into an old man, and paint cans spilling onto cars in the parking lot below.

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals® (www.CMNHospitals.org), formerly Children’s Miracle Network, announced today a new name and brand for its efforts in the United States. As a charitable entity that donates funds to children’s hospitals such as Nationwide Children’s Hospital, refreshing its brand and adding the word “hospitals” to the name solidifies its purpose with partners and the public.

Nationwide Children’s has been a part of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals since 1982 and has received more than $25 million from the partnership. Locally, many of these funds are raised by selling paper icons known as miracle balloons at retailers such as Walmart and Great Clips. The paper icons will still be sold at the same locations, but a new image will be used. The funds raised by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals have helped local children by providing funds so that all children receive excellent care, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.

“The new name and image better represent our mission to raise funds and awareness for children’s hospitals,” said Craig Sorensen, chief marketing officer of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. “We initiated this rebranding to show the close affiliation Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has with its partnering children’s hospitals and our mission of improving the lives of children though fundraising efforts.”

In addition to the name change, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals updated its familiar balloon logo to reflect the clean, simple and fresh personality of the new image. Rebranding efforts were led by the Cincinnati office of Landor, a brand consulting and design firm, who took on the pro-bono project to make it stand out among other strong charitable brands. The new brand was created with the help of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ Board of Trustees and Board of Governors comprised of hospital CEOs, hospital foundation leaders, sponsor representatives, business professionals and media experts. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ Canadian partners will continue to operate under Children’s Miracle Network but will adopt the new balloon logo.

	About Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals® raises funds for 170 children’s hospitals across North America, which, in turn, use the money where it’s needed the most. When a donation is given it stays in the community, ensuring that every dollar is helping local kids. Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has raised more than $4 billion, most of it $1 at a time. These donations have gone to support research and training, purchase equipment and pay for uncompensated care, all in support of its mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible. Nationwide Children’s Hospital announced today the introduction of a new pediatric diagnostic tool that assesses developmental milestones in early childhood while helping identify problems so that treatments for various conditions or disorders can begin sooner.

The new diagnostic tool, termed Pediaglyphs™, was developed by a team led by Kelly Kelleher, MD, MPH, director of the Center for Innovation in Pediatric Practice of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s, in conjunction with Vectorform LLC, a company that specializes in developing applications and interactive communications systems. The technology will also be used for patient education applications.

The advantage of the new technology is that it will enable doctors to assess, store and track the developmental stages of a child over time, so that problem areas can be identified faster and treatment for identified conditions and disorders can be initiated earlier in the child’s development.

The goal in developing the Pediaglyphs™ System was to take existing diagnostic and patient education tools and create new applications using the power and speed of smart phones and smart pads.

The project is being funded, in part, by a $40,000 grant from AT&T and will begin as a pilot program at the main campus with expansion planned for Nationwide Children’s Primary Care Centers.

“AT&T is committed to working with health care professionals to help the industry become more efficient and more effective through technology,” said Tom Pelto, president, AT&T Ohio. “We are very excited to partner with Nationwide Children’s Hospital on this revolutionary new tool, Pediaglyphs™.”

In central Ohio, it is estimated that 46 percent of the children entering kindergarten today lack the basic language skills they need to learn how to read. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends developmental surveillance at all well-child visits in addition to the use of developmental screening tools. Pediaglyphs™ will integrate the “Parents Evaluation of Developmental Status” (PEDS) screening tool, which is a parent reporting instrument for children ages birth to 8-years old. In addition, Nationwide Children’s will incorporate an interactive skills assessment that pediatricians can use during well-child visits to assess patients’ development from 2-5 years of age.

Early identification of developmental disorders is critical to the well-being of children and their families. With an increase in primary care services, pediatric health care providers have the responsibility to screen a child’s development early and address any concerns.

Through the use of the smart pad and smart phone applications, users can perform natural hand gestures such as flicking, swiping and drawing, to connect with content in new and exciting ways.

Developmental delay affects at least 10 percent of children and about half go undetected when clinical judgment alone is used. The Pediaglyphs™ System will maximize positive patient outcomes by giving doctors advanced diagnostic capabilities and caregivers of all literacy levels a way to become more fully engaged in their child’s developmental screening.

During the holidays, we reflect on loved ones who have touched our lives and hearts. In 2003, Christine Wilson and four of her friends perished in a tragic arson near the campus of The Ohio State University. To honor her precious life, the 7th annual “Christine’s Christmas” will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday, December 11, at Capitol Theatre at the Vern Riffe Center in downtown Columbus.

Christine had a passion for bettering the lives of those around her, particularly children, and this special charity concert keeps that passion – and her memory – alive. The event benefits the Center for Child and Family Advocacy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which through a multi-disciplinary team of professionals that provide assessment, long term treatment and support, research, prevention and advocacy, assists abused children and victims of domestic violence.

The concert features pianist Mark King who, inspired by his friend Christine, recorded and performs Christine’s Christmas. He is joined on stage by special guests including vocalist Willie Grové, the Dublin Jerome High School A Cappella Choir, event emcee WBNS 10TV’s Chuck Strickler and a variety of musical talent.

The performance is followed by an 8:30 p.m. reception in the Capitol Theatre lobby overlooking the breathtaking view of the Capitol building with heavy hors d’oeuvres, a dessert buffet and cash bar. In addition, guests can finish their holiday shopping by taking part in a silent auction.

Reservations are $75 for adults and $25 for students/children. To make reservations, please visit www.NationwideChildrens.org/ChristinesChristmas or call (614) 355-0888.

The event features four leadership sponsors including ABCO Fire Protection, the Joseph Group, Tiffany & Co. and Dr. Bill Shiels. In addition, long time media sponsor, WBNS 10TV, is joined by CMH Magazine and Time Warner in helping with promotional efforts.

The Center for Child and Family Advocacy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is an innovative partnership between Nationwide Children’s and the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence. The center’s mission is to transform the way the community responds to family violence. It accomplishes this work through a multi-disciplinary team of professionals that provide assessment, long term treatment and support, research, prevention and advocacy. Housed in a facility on the campus of Nationwide Children’s, the center is the first of its kind in the nation to fully integrate services for child abuse and family violence under one roof. Additional information on the center can be found at www.NationwideChildrens.org/CCFA.

The Christine Wilson Foundation was formed to honor the memory of Christine Wilson who, on April 13, 2003, perished in a tragic fire near The Ohio State University campus along with four friends. Her family and friends honor Christine’s love of giving through the Christine Wilson Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to provide annual scholarships to incoming freshmen planning to attend Bishop Watterson High School and to reach to other Columbus community charities involving children. Nationwide Children’s Hospital was recently announced as a LIVESTRONG® Community Impact Project award recipient. The project, created by LIVESTRONG, the organization founded by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong to serve people affected by cancer and empower them to take action, will bring proven cancer support programs to 55 communities across the United States.

“We are thrilled and honored to be named as a Community Impact Project award recipient,” said Jon Fitzgerald, president of Nationwide Children’s Hospital Foundation. “This award will go a long way in helping people in our community and the patients we serve who are affected by cancer. We want to give special thanks to everyone who voted in support of this program. Together, we’re making a difference in the lives of cancer survivors and their families.”

“LIVESTRONG is dedicated to providing the best direct services to people affected by cancer and encourages our supporters to be actively involved in leading this unified movement against cancer,” said Doug Ulman, president and CEO of LIVESTRONG. “The LIVESTRONG Community Impact Project is exercising an innovative approach that engages more people in our mission and allows them to play a critical role in the organization’s programming.”

One hundred seventy-nine qualified hospitals, cancer centers and community organizations in eight regions across the United States were selected to participate in an online voting campaign. Over a two-week period, more than 260,000 votes were cast and Nationwide Children’s was among the finalists.

The hospital will use the $16,000 award to establish the Creative Center’s Artists-in-Residence program. This program will offer patients the opportunity to learn about and become absorbed in their own creative resources as they meet the challenges of diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. The program at Nationwide Children’s will work bedside and in small group settings with men, women and children in oncology units, bone marrow transplant units, intensive care/respiratory units, hospice and palliative care programs.

LIVESTRONG is committed to supporting community organizations in their efforts to help cancer survivors face the challenges and changes that come with cancer. Since its inception in 1997, the organization has invested more than $68 million in community-centered organizations. It fights for the 28 million people around the world living with cancer today, and connects individuals to the support they need, leveraging funding and resources to spur innovation and engaging communities and leaders to drive social change.
