This innovative program uses a large model of the colon to raise awareness of colon cancer and educate people about colon health. People can literally “tour the colon”, by walking through the life-size, medically accurate colon model.
Nearly two dozen Super Colon educational events are taking place throughout the US from now through October 2010. The tour is showing up all across the country, from California, to South Dakota, Texas, Florida, Michigan, and places in between.
Visit the Prevent Cancer Foundation Super Colon Website to find an event near you and for more information.
The Undy 5000
The Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) is doing their part to raise awareness and funds to fight colon cancer. CCA has created a series of running races called The Undy 5000. In a funny play on words, each race is referred to as “a brief run to fight colon cancer.” Each race is 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in length, which is 5000 meters.
Cancer-specific races, walks, and other events are a successful and valuable way to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer. The Undy 5000 colon cancer awareness races are taking place in locations across the US:

On Friday, March 5, 2010, the Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) is asking local communities, corporations and the general public to support awareness of colorectal cancer by Dressing in Blue.
The CCA hopes Dress in Blue Day will help start a conversation about colon cancer. The goal is to spread awareness about colon cancer screening, which can reduce the risk of this disease.
Why Blue?
Dress in Blue Day is designed to be similar to breast cancer’s pink ribbon approach. Just like the pink ribbon campaign to raise breast cancer awareness, the blue star symbol will serves as a year-round reminder of the battle against colon cancer.
Why is Dress in Blue Day So Important?
Colon Cancer is a highly preventable, but rarely discussed disease. Colon cancer claims the lives of nearly 50,000 Americans every year. Colon cancer is highly preventable, yet it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.
Thanks for visiting!Up to 25% of Americans have metabolic syndrome, yet many people don’t even know what it is. Metabolic syndrome is defined by the presence of several heart disease and diabetes risk factors. Features of metabolic syndrome include:

High blood pressure
High triglycerides (fat in the blood)
Low HDL (good) cholesterol
Insulin resistance or high blood sugar
Carrying excess weight around the belly and upper body (central obesity)>

If a person has two or more of these risk factors, there’s a good chance he or she has metabolic syndrome.
We know metabolic syndrome greatly increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. A new study suggests it increases cancer risk too.
People with metabolic syndrome have up to two and a half times the risk of dying of cancer compared with healthy adults. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to prevent metabolic [...]

One of the most important things you can do to help yourself or a loved one cope better is to be informed about your options. Unfortunately, many doctors are uncomfortable talking to their patients about end-of-life care.
It is a painful and difficult thing to face our own mortality. It’s not surprising that doctors often don’t deal with this topic very well either.
Sometimes, if a person is struggling to accept the incurable nature of their disease, they will ask for more treatment and more aggressive treatment. If their doctor also is struggling to explain end-of-life options in a way that makes sense, a person can end up getting treatments that worsen quality of life significantly. This isn’t good for anyone.
More Information Helps
A new study suggests a video describing end-of-life options can help people feel more secure in their decisions about [...]

For the most part, a healthy diet, a healthy body weight, regular exercise, and avoidance of tobacco is what everyone needs to lower cancer risk significantly. I might suggest a few dietary supplements here and there, depending on personal health and disease risk factors. But that’s about it. I’m not a big “pill popper” or “vitamin pusher”.
I just might make an exception for vitamin D. The latest research on the topic again supports vitamin D’s important role in warding off colon cancer.
By The Numbers
The current study comes out of a larger, long-running study called EPIC, which is short for European Prospective Investigation [...]

Thanks for visiting!Scientists at Johns Hopkins have developed a new way to test for cancer recurrence using a blood test. To do this, researchers focused on large chunks of DNA that are rearranged in cancer cells.
DNA is the genetic material, or instruction manual, found in nearly every cell of the body. Part of DNA is made up of four chemicals. Each DNA chemical is represented by a letter. For DNA, these letters are A, C, G, T.
In the past, researchers looked for changes in just a single letter in the DNA that might signal cancer. For example, they might try to find that there is a G in a place where there should be a T. Given that there are billions of these letters in a molecule of DNA, it’s like finding the “needle in the haystack.”
Thanks for visiting! Results of a recent survey on our attitudes about our health and the health of others shows a major disconnect between belief and reality. This might seem like an amusing side note. Unfortunately, the consequences can be deadly serious. This is especially true for colon cancer.
The survey of more than 2,000 Americans, conducted in late 2009, found that more than half believed other people’s health was “going in the wrong direction.” Only 17% felt their own health was going in the wrong direction. America’s doctors seem to disagree. This suggests that many people have unrealistically optimistic ideas about their diet, exercise, and other health habits.
Evidence of the Disconnect:

About a third of Americans give themselves an A for personal health; 92% of doctors rate Americans’ health as a C or worse.
Approximately a third of Americans give [...]

According to a new study out of Massachusetts General Hospital for Children in Boston, kids today are heavier than ever.
Researchers followed three groups of young children for 6 years, beginning with the first group in 1988. The second group of kids was followed from 1994 to 2000, and the third group was followed from 2000 to 2006. The obesity rate increased from 13 percent at the end of the first study group, in 1994, to approximately 16 percent at the end of the third group in 2006.
Lots of Heavy Kids, Lots of Heavy Adults
This means that nearly 1 out of every 6 children in the US are obese. Not merely overweight, but obese. The consequences of all this excess body fat are serious and long-lasting.
