It is particularly indicated where the patient already has urate crystal deposition, including the presence of tophus. It is only available on prescription.

In the United States and Canada, febuxostat is branded as Uloric, Adenuric in the European Union (EU) and Feburic in Asia.

How Does Febuxostat Work?

Uric acid is naturally formed through the breakdown of purines in the body which normally expels excess acid via urine with a little through the stools. However, excess uric acid can be retained in the bloodstream when the body produces more acid than it can eliminate. High uric acid levels can eventually lead to the deposition of crystals of urate in the joints and surrounding tissue, causing the excruciating symptoms of gout.

Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. Xanthine oxidase is an enzyme in the body that helps to convert purines into uric acid. Febuxostat can inhibit this activity and so can help to reduce the amount of uric acid produced.

What to Tell Your Doctor Before Taking Febuxostat

You should tell your doctor if you…

are pregnant

are breastfeeding

are allergic to febuxostat or any of the ingredients in the tablets

have or have had heart problems

have thyroid problems

are taking any other medications

How to Take Febuxostat

Your doctor will tell you how to take it. He or she will decide on the dose applicable to your condition. This is usually a 40 mg, 80 mg or a 120 mg tablet taken once per day with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. Take the tablets exactly as your doctor prescribes. If you miss a dose do not double-up on the next dose. And do not stop taking the tablets unless your doctor tells you to.

Note that, after starting on a course, you may suffer one or more gout attacks. Do not stop taking the tablets. This happens naturally as uric acid is removed from the joints and tissue because of the action of the drug. Your doctor may prescribe NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to help relieve the painful symptoms.

Febuxostat Side Effects

As with any drug there are possible negative side effects with the taking of febuxostat. But not everyone will suffer these side effects. In fact, most patients will tolerate it quite well. And where they do appear, they are usually fairly minor and either don’t need any treatment, or, only require some simple treatment by your physician.

Common side effects are:- headache, nausea, unexplained rash, diarrhea, liver function test abnormalities.

Uncommon are:- dizziness, fatigue, oedema, altered sense of taste, increase in blood amylase, decrease in platelet count, increase in blood creatinine, and arthralgia.

Rare side effects:- insomnia, nervousness, renal insufficiency, asthenia.

There are some rare, but serious, side effects that you should report urgently to your health-care provider. These are things such as:-

chest pain

difficulty breathing

easy bruising or bleeding

wheezing

swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue, throat, etc.

unexplained rash

itching

hives

frequent / persistent infections

numbness in arms, legs, face

liver problems (yellowing of the whites of the eyes, dark colored urine)

Note that the lists of side effects given above are not complete. For a more detailed list of possible febuxostat side effects please speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

Related Gout Articles:

No Related Gout Articles

Readers who viewed this page, also viewed:

Natural Home Remedies to Reduce Uric Acid in the Body

Nature’s Top 4 Gout Remedies

Pictures of Gout In Feet: How to Get Rid of Gout in Feet

Hyperuricemia Symptoms & Treatment Guidelines

Common Foods that Should Be Avoided by Gout Patients

Indomethacin Gout Medication – Is Indocin Right For You?

The Use of Cherry Extract in Gout Treatment

Get Fast Gout Relief Today

It is a drug in the group called “non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs” (NSAIDs) and is widely used to reduce swelling, fever, stiffness, inflammation and pain, caused by arthritis, gout, bursitis, tendinitis, and ankylosing spondylitis.

It is probably the most commonly used drug-based medication to relieve gout symptoms. Brand names are Indocin and Indocin-SR. Indomethacin is available in capsule, slow-release capsule, oral suspension and suppository forms.

How Does Indomethacin Reduce Gout Symptoms?

Indomethacin works by helping to block or inhibit the production of prostaglandin molecules that are naturally produced by our bodies’cells when body tissue is damaged. This damage occurs in gout victims due to the presence of urate crystals in the joints and surrounding tissue.

White blood cells flood the damaged site in order to limit and help repair the damage. Prostaglandins are produced during this process resulting in pain, inflammation, swelling, stiffness, etc. This is the body’s natural inflammatory process. By inhibiting prostaglandins production, Indomethacin helps to reduce these symptoms.

Dosage

Capsules come in 25 mg and 50 mg. Sustained release capsules in 75 mg. Oral suspension 25 mg / ml, and suppositories 50 mg.

The recommended dose for adults is 50 to 200 mg per day. Never increase or decrease the dose or use it for less or longer than prescribed unless your doctor has told you to. Never go over the total daily dosage. And do not lie down for up to 30 minutes after taking a dose.

Your doctor will advise on the actual preparation and dosage depending on your particular case. He / she will normally start you at the lowest possible dosage for your case and over the shortest possible timescale in order to reduce the risk of side effects such as bleeding (see below). Take the medication with a meal or directly after a meal to help protect your stomach. Some doctors often prescribe certain drugs or antacids to help with this too.

What Are the Side Effects of Indomethacin?

The most common side effects are:-

upset stomach

diarrhea

nausea

vomiting

drowsiness

tiredness

heartburn

headache

dizziness

In the event that you get any of these side effects and they get worse, or even if they just persist, you should contact your physician.

Indomethacin also has some more serious side effects that you should be aware of. Contact your doctor if you suffer any of the following:-

unexplained / sudden weight gain

swelling of hands or feet

mood swings

difficulty swallowing

unexplained hearing changes (e.g. tinnitus)

Indomethacin can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke as well as other circulatory problems. And it can also cause bleeding and even perforation of the stomach and intestines. So that if you suffer any of the following symptoms you must stop taking the medication and seek urgent medical attention:-

stiff neck

shortness of breath / trouble breathing

chest pain

slurred speech

weakness in any part of the body

extreme tiredness

vision problems

balance problems

change in urination flow

dark colored urine

yellowing of the skin

yellow eyes

blood in stools

severe stomach pain

rash

itching

swelling of the lips / mouth / tongue / throat

The lists of possible side effects above are not complete. So if you suffer from any other side effects that are not listed here, you must contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. For more serious issues seek urgent medical help.

Who Should Use / Not Use Indomethacin for Gout?

At all times you should seek your physician’s advice before taking any medication, and be guided by them. Your doctor will make a professional assessment of your suitability for Indomethacin before prescribing it for gout. However, before that, you should ensure that you tell your doctor if you:-

are allergic to Indomethacin, aspirin, other NSAIDs (e.g. Iboprufen, Naproxen, etc.)

have other allergies

are taking any other drugs

are taking herbal products, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, etc.

are pregnant

are planning to become pregnant

are breastfeeding

Also, if you have or have had:-

heart or circulatory problems

stroke

stomach ulcers / bleeding

high blood pressure

blood clot

asthma

epilepsy

liver or kidney disease

nasal polyps

You should not use Indomethacin if you are allergic to it or aspirin or other NSAIDs. You should not use it directly before or after heart bypass surgery. You physician will weigh-up the benefits against the possible side effects and decide whether or not Indomethacin (Indocin) is right for your particular case.

Related Gout Articles:

No Related Gout Articles

Readers who viewed this page, also viewed:

Febuxostat for Gout – Uloric, Adenuric and Feburic Tablets for Hyperuricemia

High Uric Acid in Urine – What Does It Mean?

Colchicine for Gout: How Safe is Colchicine in the Treatment of Gout?

Stop Gout Fast With Baking Soda

Uric Acid Therapy to Get Rid of Gout

How to Get Rid of Uric Acid Symptoms Fast

Pictures of Gout In Feet: How to Get Rid of Gout in Feet

Can Apple Cider Vinegar Cure Gout In The Foot?

Hyperuricemia Symptoms & Treatment Guidelines

Common Foods that Should Be Avoided by Gout Patients

Nature’s Top 4 Gout Remedies

Spradlin on Nature’s Top 4 Gout Remedies…

Recognizing the Predispositions and Symptoms of Painful Gout Arthritis

Gout is a painful type of arthritis. Symptoms include sudden, intense pain; redness; heat; swelling, and tenderness in the joints typically located in the large joint of the big toe where even the weight of thin material can cause excruciating pain. However, pain can occur in the sufferer’s feet, ankles, knees, hands, fingers, elbows and wrists as well. Gout attacks come on quickly and they are painful and can last anywhere from five to ten days in length.

Gout only affects about five percent of arthritis sufferers. It’s caused by the buildup of uric acid (or waste substances) in the blood. Typically, uric acid is dissolved in the bloodstream, processed by the kidneys, and eliminated via the urine. However, those with gout have an excess amount of uric acid, which the kidneys can’t eliminate, so instead the uric acid crystallizes and gathers in the joints, causing painful, lumpy deposits (called tophi). Gout patients will typically be prescribed a preventative medication, like Uloric, to eliminate excess uric acid and deal with symptoms.

Gout typically effects:

Men in their 40s and 50s

Those with a family history of gout

Overweight individuals

Excessive eaters—which increases uric acid production

Those with diets largely consisting of organ meats (liver, kidney, brains, sweetbreads), sardines, anchovies, and dried peas, lentils, and legumes

Heavy drinkers

Those who’ve used diuretics for lengthy periods of time

If your doctor suspects that you are predisposed to gout, try not to:

Consume large amounts of alcohol

Overeat due to stress

Start a crash diet

Unfortunately, things beyond your control can also trigger a gout attack, such as:

Surgery

Injuring a joint

Undergoing chemotherapy

Nature’s Top 4 Gout Remedies

If you suffer from gout, your doctor may prescribe several prescription medications, for example, Uloric to eliminate excess uric acid in your body. However, many gout sufferers chose a combination of conventional prescription drugs and natural remedies to treat their symptoms, including:

1. Increase Your Hydration

Consuming eight, 6-ounce glasses of water a day helps to reduce gout symptoms by cleansing uric acid out of the system and helping prevent the formation of kidney stones.

2. Diet and Cardio Exercise

Switching from a diet rich in meat and seafood to a diet rich in fresh fruit, vegetables and leaner proteins will help reduce the build-up of uric acid. It is derived from the seeds of the autumn crocus plant, also known as meadow saffron. The plant’s use in the treatment of rheumatism and inflammation was recorded in Egypt as far back as 1500 BC.

As a drug, colchicine was first isolated in 1820 by two French chemists, Pelletier and Caventon. And in 2009 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave approval for its use as a standalone drug in the treatment of gout in the United States. Before 1982 it had only been approved in combination with probenecid. Colchicine can only be obtained on prescription.

Why Colchicine And Not NSAIDs?

Nowadays, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are usually the first choice medicines to relieve the pain and inflammation of gout. They are available over-the-counter as well as on prescription. And for very many people they can be very effective. However, there are some people who cannot take them, or at the very least should get clearance from their doctor before taking them. For example people having:-

known kidney or liver disease

known allergies to certain medications

stomach ulcers

hypertension (high blood pressure)

being pregnant

certain heart conditions

diabetes

asthma

In the cases where NSAIDs are inappropriate then colchicine is often prescribed. And, of course, there may be situations where the gout attack is so severe that NSAIDs prove to be ineffective for those who are clear to take them. Where this is the case then colchicine may be prescribed.

Who Should Not Take Colchicine

Clearly, you should not take colchicine if you’re allergic to it. But you must also inform your doctor if you suffer from any of the following:-

kidney disease

liver disease

heart disease

intestinal disorder or bleeding

stomach ulcer

Crohn’s disease

ulcerative colitis

Also, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, you intend to become pregnant during a proposed course of colchicine, or if you are breastfeeding. In addition to these issues there are certain drugs which can increase the toxicity of colchicine (see Dosage and Toxicity below). Your doctor will then make a determination of the most appropriate treatment in your case.

How Does Colchicine Work?

Colchicine does not reduce the actual uric acid levels present in the blood. There are other drugs that are prescribed for this, such as probenecid and allopurinol. However, because a sudden change in uric acid levels can actually cause a gout attack or increase the severity of existing symptoms, colchicine may sometimes be prescribed at the same time as uric acid-reducing drugs.

Its main use is in treating the inflammation, swelling and associated pain of acute gout attacks and in the short-term prevention of gout. It does this by inhibiting the build-up of white blood cells in the areas of the body where uric acid crystals have formed. To protect the area, your body’s own defence mechanism tries to swamp the crystals with white blood cells and pro-inflammatory enzymes and lactic acid are produced as a result. It’s these that give rise to the inflammation, swelling and pain of gout. So by inhibiting this process you can reduce the pain, inflammation and swelling of a gout attack.

Colchicine Side Effects

As with any drug there are side effects. However, one has to weigh-up the severity of the pain and disability of the actual gout attack against the severity of the side effects. Common side effects are:-

nausea

vomiting

diarrhea

bleeding in stomach

rash

anemia

muscle weakness

abdominal pain

less urination than normal or not urinating at all

For a fuller list you need to talk to the pharmacist and carefully read the documentation that comes with the medicine. But please bear in mind that not everyone will suffer all of these. Some folks won’t suffer any. Others will suffer one or two maybe. Some may suffer more. Not only that, their severity will vary across individuals who have them.

That being said, if you experience any of the following when taking colchicine then call your doctor right away:-

abdominal pain

diarrhea

unusual fatigue

tingling in fingers or toes

flu symptoms

bleeding or bruising which is unusual or unexplained

blood in stools

bleeding from anus

blood in urine

And, if you have any of the following you need to contact emergency services at once, as these could be the signs of very serious complications:-

fever

hives (red, itchy red welts on the skin)

burning in the mouth and throat

swelling on the face, neck, tongue, throat, lips

Colchicine Dosage and Toxicity

As you’ve now seen above, colchicine is a very toxic drug which, if taken in too high doses, can cause serious complications, such as multiple organ failure and even death. So it is very important to follow the prescribed dosage very, very carefully. Generally speaking, this is between 2 and 4 tablets per day for most people. Tablets come in either 0.5mg and 0.6mg doses depending on which country you live in.

In addition, there are some drugs that may increase the toxicity of colchicine when taken at the same time. These are drugs such as:-

immunosuppressants

statins

antibiotics

anti-fungals

antiretrovirals

antiarrhythmics

and even grapefruit juice!

So, you need to tell your doctor which medicines, etc., you are taking if they are considering prescribing colchicine for your gout.

On a final note; do not buy colchicine online or from any other source which is not approved by your country’s drug administration, e.g. the FDA in the United States. Only take the medicine that is prescribed for you by your doctor.

Related Gout Articles:

No Related Gout Articles

Readers who viewed this page, also viewed:

Febuxostat for Gout – Uloric, Adenuric and Feburic Tablets for Hyperuricemia

Fast Gout Pain Relief – 3 Simple Tips to Relieve Your Gout Symptoms

How Do You Control Uric Acid Levels in Your Body?

Uric Acid Therapy to Get Rid of Gout

Nature’s Top 4 Gout Remedies

Natural Home Remedies to Reduce Uric Acid in the Body

Indomethacin Gout Medication – Is Indocin Right For You?

Gout Remedies: Have You Tried These Gout Home Remedies Yet?

Medicine for Gout Pain

Basic Information on Gout – What Gout is and How to Treat It

How to Get Rid of Uric Acid Symptoms Fast

First though, it’s important to understand just what hyperuricemia is…

What is Hyperuricemia?

Hyperuricemia is the name given to a condition in which a person has high levels of uric acid in their blood. This is normally considered as being more than 9 mg of uric acid per 100 ml of blood. The recommended level of uric acid is less than 6 mg per 100 ml. Someone in the range 6 mg to 9 mg per 100 ml is said to have raised or elevated uric acid levels.

It is a fact that you can have raised or even very high uric acid levels and not have gout. But that doesn’t mean that you won’t eventually get an attack of gout. You see, urate crystals, which cause gout symptoms, can take a long time to form out of uric acid, months or even years in some cases.

However, it is also a fact that many people with hyperuricemia can go through their lives without gout. On the other hand, there are also many people with normal levels of uric acid who get gout.

There just doesn’t seem to be any single or clear reason why uric acid should build-up in a person’s bloodstream to the extent that it leads to hyperuricemia. But there are several factors that are known to help increase the risk of high uric acid. These are things such as…

Genetics – certain inherited genes

A diet that is high in purines

Kidneys not functioning properly / kidney disease

Dehydration

Too much alcohol / binge drinking

Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Being overweight

Some medications (e.g. aspirin, niacin, diuretics such as thiazides, etc.)

Certain diseases (e.g. leukaemia, hypothyroidism, insulin resistance, psoriasis, glandular fever, etc.).

Hyperuricemia Symptoms

Most people probably don’t discover that they have hyperuricemia until they have been tested for, and diagnosed with, gout. Because they had experienced the symptoms of gout — swollen, hot, red, stiff, inflamed and very painful joint — they had attended their physician who had ordered a blood test. So you could say that these gout symptoms are also hyperuricemia symptoms.

But, if you have hyperuricemia without gout being present, what other symptoms should you look for? Other symptoms are thing like; fatigue, kidney stones, urination problems, headaches, dizziness, fever, and, there are even some reports of loss of libido.

Hyperuricemia Treatment Guidelines

Medical Treatment for Hyperuricemia

The medical profession will usually prescribe certain drugs to help lower high uric acid blood levels. Typical of these are Allopurinol and Probenecid, with Allopurinol probably the most widely used of all the uric acid reducing drugs.

Some people will have negative reactions to these drugs, and unfortunately, they have to be taken over the longer term because they are only effective whilst being taken. Unless you factor-in some important lifestyle and dietary changes as well, there is nothing to prevent uric acid levels rising again once you come off the drugs. So talk to your physician about this.

Dietary Changes for Hyperuricemia

Uric acid is formed as a byproduct of the breakdown of purines in our bodies and in our foods. So that if your diet is rich in high purine foods there is an increased risk of having higher levels of uric acid in the blood. So folks with hyperuricemia need to change to a lower purine diet.

This essentially means cutting out — or at the very least seriously reducing — foods like organ meat, fatty red meat, game, poultry, fish, shellfish, and even some vegetables such as mushrooms, asparagus, cauliflower and spinach.

Alcohol and Hyperuricemia

There is a clear link between high alcohol consumption and high uric acid. This happens because of alcohol’s ability to both, increase the production of uric acid, and, to reduce the excretion of uric acid due to dehydration. So alcohol needs to be seriously reduced or stopped completely. Beer is especially bad because it also contributes purines to the equation.

Link Between Hyperuricemia and Binge Eating and Drinking

It’s amazing the number of times people go on holiday and end up with gout. My first gout attack happened on holiday in Greece! And the conclusion is clear: it’s all about binge eating and drinking. On holiday, you tend to over-eat and drink too much. If you already have raised uric acid levels, then this can lead to even more uric acid production and hyperuricemia. And it’s much the same at weekends. So be careful about binge eating and drinking then too.

Conversely, you need to be careful about reducing your diet too quickly as well. For example, if you go on a crash diet, the sudden change can actually increase your uric acid levels dramatically. So always take things easy with a new diet and always with the input and guidance of your doctor first.

Stay Hydrated to Help Reduce Uric Acid Levels

It is well known that a dehydrated body is more prone to higher uric acid levels in the blood than one which is well hydrated. So drink at least 3 litres of water everyday. This will help your kidneys do their job better and help flush uric acid out of your body.

Having Hyperuricemia and Being Overweight

Being overweight may be on of the most common causes of hyperuricemia. When you are overweight, not only do you have more purines in your body to produce uric acid, as well as putting additional strain on your joints, you are also much more likely to have high blood pressure, another cause of high uric acid. So, if you are overweight, you really must get back down to your healthy weight. Check with your doctor.

These are a few, but nevertheless, important hyperuricemia treatment guidelines. You can see that even if you use the medication route, you still need to incorporate dietary and lifestyle changes. In fact, because of the cost of ongoing drug-based medications and their possible side effects, sufferers are increasingly using natural approaches to their hyperuricemia treatment.

Related Gout Articles:

The Reason For High Uric Acid in Blood and 4 Quick Tips to Lower It

Gout Pain Relief – 5 Easy Tips to Get Rid of Gout Pain Fast and Naturally

Basic Information on Gout – What Gout is and How to Treat It

Lowering Uric Acid Naturally Using These 5 Natural Gout Remedies

Benefits of Combining Gout Treatments and Diet For a Dramatic Reduction of Gout Symptoms

Uric Acid Therapy to Get Rid of Gout

Gout Therapies From Your Physician

The Causes Of High Uric Acid Levels Leading To Gout

Find Out How To Handle Gout At Home Now!

Gout Risk Factors – Are You at Risk of Gout?

Readers who viewed this page, also viewed:

Natural Home Remedies to Reduce Uric Acid in the Body

Nature’s Top 4 Gout Remedies

The Use of Cherry Extract in Gout Treatment

Find Out How To Handle Gout At Home Now!

Get Fast Gout Relief Today

Gout Recipes

How to Get Rid of Uric Acid Symptoms Fast

The Causes Of High Uric Acid Levels Leading To Gout

Common Foods that Should Be Avoided by Gout Patients

Uric Acid Therapy to Get Rid of Gout

Uric Acid Symptoms – 5 Simple Tips to Ditch Your Uric Acid Symptoms of Gout

This is because they are less expensive than drug based treatments, and, they actually work. And research has shown that cherries are very promising in the management of gout.

Cherries come from the genus Prunus. The native range of the wild cherry is found within most of Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Cherries are rich in anthocyanins, which were shown to reduce pain and inflammation in rats. Anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants. These are particularly found in concentrated amounts as pigments in berries. Anthocyanin pigments have the ability to protect against a multitude of human diseases. These belong to the flavinoid group of phytochemicals. Laboratory results have shown potential benefits against aging, cancer, bacterial infections, and inflammation.

In gout, the overload of uric acid in the body leads to the formation of minute crystal deposits in the joints. Joint inflammation is due to the formation of crystals. Gout is a chronic condition and is a progressive disease of the joints. This leads to extremely painful attacks with rapid onset of joint inflammation, pain, heat, and redness of the affected joint tissues.

Medications that reduce inflammation are very important in the treatment of gout. Prevention of future attacks is equally important as treating acute gout attacks. To avoid gout attacks, ensure adequate fluid intake and reduce alcohol intake. Weight reduction is another way to manage gout. Dietary changes and avoiding foods rich in protein and purines are also necessary.

Pain relievers, NSAIDS, colchichine, allopurinol, and corticosteroids are the usual drug-based medications for gout. In addition to gout medicines, gout supplements have shown to be effective in preventing gout attacks. Cherry extract contains powerful anti inflammatory properties. And preliminary research suggests that eating around 20 cherries per day, or around one cup, can cut the risk of recurrent gout attacks by around fifty percent. A gout supplement containing wild cherry is an easy and convenient way to manage gout, with equally excellent results.

Related Gout Articles:

Basic Information on Gout – What Gout is and How to Treat It

Common Foods that Should Be Avoided by Gout Patients

Gout Remedies: Have You Tried These Gout Home Remedies Yet?

Gout Remedies and Vital Information – Restore Your Health Today

Gout, What Do You Know About It?

Effective Gout Treatments: Can Gout Supplements Cure Gout?

Gout Therapies From Your Physician

Gout Treatment and Prevention Basics

Gout Treatment – Cherries and Gout Goes Out The Door!

What is a Gout Attack? – Gout Attack Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Readers who viewed this page, also viewed:

How You Can Control Uric Acid Levels in Your Body Naturally

Febuxostat for Gout – Uloric, Adenuric and Feburic Tablets for Hyperuricemia

Indomethacin Gout Medication – Is Indocin Right For You?

Effective Gout Treatments: Can Gout Supplements Cure Gout?

Nature’s Top 4 Gout Remedies

The Gout Remedy Report Review

Gout Therapies From Your Physician

Gout Treatment and Prevention Basics

Colchicine for Gout: How Safe is Colchicine in the Treatment of Gout?

Hyperuricemia Symptoms & Treatment Guidelines

Gout Recipes

You’ll get the answers to your questions here…

Gout Remedies

The gout remedies prescribed by your doctor are usually drug-based and are used to reduce the pain and inflammation of a gout attack. There are also medications that they can prescribe which are used to try to help reduce your uric acid levels.

Now whilst these drugs can help in both of these endeavours, they do have numerous negative side effects that put many patients off of using them. And the uric acid reducing drugs has to be taken long term because they are only effective whilst being taken by the individual. A single course of these cannot permanently reduce your uric acid.

At the same time there are many people who instinctively do not like to use drugs at all. And, of course, there’s the ongoing cost for those that do.

These are just some of the reasons why so many more gout sufferers are searching for natural gout home remedies nowadays. So if you are in this category, you aren’t alone by a long way.

Let’s now take a high level view of natural gout remedies…

Natural Gout Remedies

There are many gout home remedies that you can use that can get rid of your gout symptoms and lower uric acid. What this means is that there are totally natural remedies that you can get rid of the pain and inflammation of your gout and, in addition, help to prevent its reappearance. And preventing further repeat attacks is even more important than getting rid of the symptoms of the first one…

You see, once having suffered your first gout attack you’re now very highly likely to suffer more. But, apart from the excruciating pain of each attack, there is a darker side; and that is that frequently recurring gout can leave you with permanent joint damage as well as kidney problems, one of which is agonizing kidney stones.

So, by utilizing the benefits of natural gout remedies, you can help to not only get rid of the current attack, but also to prevent recurring gout from doing you some serious damage along the road. And without the usual negative side effects of drug-based gout remedies.

Gout Home Remedies Availability

The good news is that gout home remedies are readily available. You can find them in your kitchen, in your grocery store, in your local health food store and even in your pharmacy. Natural gout remedies include things like herbs, fruits, vegetables, supplements, natural detoxing, kidney cleanses, and so on.

Not only that, because uric acid is produced by the natural breakdown of ‘purines’ which we naturally have in the cell structure of our bodies and which also exist in our foods, there are dietary and lifestyle changes that you can make that can help to reduce your uric acid levels and so prevent recurring gout.

Natural Gout Remedies in The Gout Site

You can find detailed information on natural gout remedies across this website. Any joint in the body can develop gout, but the joints of the big toes are most commonly affected. Gout attacks can happen anytime of the day and can also occur repeatedly. These attacks can eventually damage the joints and the surrounding tissues unless the condition is managed early.

High levels of blood uric acid can lead to gout. But, having increased levels of uric acid does not necessarily mean the development of gout, since there are a lot of patients who never develop gout even with high levels of uric acid. However, some patients do form urate crystals in the joints when their blood uric acid is elevated. Pain and swelling are caused by these crystal formations.

People who are overweight and those who are heavy drinkers of alcohol — especially beer — have a greater risk of developing gout. Consuming too much meat and fish, particularly the internal organs like the liver and kidneys, can increase blood uric acid because these foods are high in purines. When purines are broken down by the body, uric acid si formed. The more purine rich foods are consumed, the higher the levels of uric acid in the body.

Generally speaking, the common signs of gout are great pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness to touch of the big toe, that occurs quite often during nighttime. This can last for weeks or months before the pain lessens. Another gout attack may not be felt again for months or even years.

To help ease the pain of gout, rest the affected joint. To help with the pain and swelling, one can take pain relievers and / or anti inflammatory drugs.

But the best way to stop gout pain is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Modify the diet by limiting your meat and fish intake to naturally reduce uric acid levels. Medications that lower uric acid levels and drinking a lot of fluids can ease the symptoms. A natural gout supplement can be used to assist with the symptoms of gout. This can be used as a supplement and does not cause any abdominal problems as pain killers do.

Top get more detailed information on gout please click here and download the Gout Remedy Report.

Related Gout Articles:

Gout, What Do You Know About It?

What is a Gout Attack? – Gout Attack Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Gout Symptom Relief – Gout Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Uric Acid Therapy to Get Rid of Gout

Understanding Gout Attacks

Gout – Major Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

<a href='http://www.thegoutsite.com/what-is-gout/what-is-gout-a-simple-guide-to-what-gout-is' title='What is Gout? Sometimes these are called complimentary therapies because they can be used in conjunction with conventional medicine. And they are increasingly being sought after by gout patients.

Although the medical profession is gradually changing its tune about alternative therapies, there is still a major distrust of them in medical circles, particularly in the drug industry, where natural remedies and techniques can’t be patented. Nevertheless, aside from their effectiveness, alternative therapies for gout have many benefits, an obvious one being that they are pretty much free from any bad side effects.

Now, there are those who say that any perceived benefits are ‘all in the head.’ But even if this were so, isn’t that a good thing? If the eliminaton of gout happens even partly because of a more positive attitude, isn’t that a great result? Gout is no different from any other illness where a positive attitude in the patient does help to speed-up recovery.

But alternative therapies are more than that; some do have measurable results. Here are just a few therapies that you may wish to follow-up on in your area….

Alternative Therapies for Gout

1. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is being used much more widely nowadays and is even sometimes advised by physicians in certain cases. This is a very ancient oriental healing system that uses long, fine needles that are inserted into the body at specific points. The actual points used are dependent on the condition that the therapy is trying to address.

When a gout patient goes for acupuncture therapy, the acupuncturist will place needles not only in the specific points that affect the particular joint with the gout symptoms, but also other specific points that affect the underlying issues that trigger gout. So that they are able to both get rid of the symptoms and also prevent future episodes.

2. Acupressure

Again this is an ancient oriental therapy that combines acupressure theory and massage. The therapist in this case uses the palm, thumb and fingertips of the hands, to apply pressure through firm massage on the same pressure points as described above in acupuncture.

3. Homeopathy

Homeopathic remedies are extracted from mineral, animal and plant substances. They can come in the form of tablets, capsules, ointments, etc. The concept is that you cure ‘like with like.’ For example, if a certain homeopathic extract produces symptoms of a cold in a healthy person, then it is believed that that same extract, diluted many times before being made up into the particular medicant, can be used to cure a person with a cold.

4. Mineral Tissue Salts

These are believed to be particularly effective where the body is too acidic. Which is good, because gout patients’ bodies are usually overly acidic. Dr. W. Schuessler isolated the original 12 mineral tissue salts in 1880. He identified that these were essential for proper body cellular funcionality, and that any deficiency in one or more of these would gave rise to specific health issues depending on which mineral tissue was deficient. He found that, by taking that particular mineral tissue, the balance could be restored and the health issue resolved.

Today, there are over thirty mineral tissues that can be used in this therapy. For gout patients, the most appropriate are No.10 (sodium phosphate) and No.4 (iron phosphate). You should be able to get these from pharmacies or good health food stores near you.

Alternative Therapies for Gout Conclusion

The above are just four of the many alternative therapies for gout out there. These include certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol in the blood, and arteriosclerosis or narrowing of arteries.

Medications such as diuretics and even low dose aspirin can trigger gout attacks because these increase uric acid levels. The risk also increases if other family members are suffering from gout. Males are also more prone to have it than females.

Probably the most controllable of these risk factors is the diet. Unknowingly, there are common foods that can increase gout risk. These include foods high in protein and those high in purines. These cause increased levels of uric acid in the body which can become crystals in the joints. These crystals cause inflammation and pain, frequently in the big toe.

Seafood such as scallops, mackerel, anchovies, herring, sardines, and salmon are some of those with the highest purine content. Shrimp and crab should also be avoided.

Organ meats such as liver, kidneys, brains, heart, and beef tongue are high in purines. These should be limited or avoided especially during a gout attack.

Meats like beef, pork, and lamb should be limited as well. Game meats such as pheasant, squirrel, grouse, and deer meat have fairly high levels of purines. Limit the serving size of meats to two to three ounces per day. Poultry such as turkey and chicken are regarded as having moderately high amounts so these can be eaten in moderation.

Processed meat such as hot dogs, bacon, lunch meats, sausages, bologna, salami, and pepperoni can also cause gout when eaten in large amounts.

Vegetables that are moderately high in purines include peas, lentils, asparagus, mushrooms, and cauliflower. These vegetables should be taken in moderation so as not to increase the gout risk.

Cherries have been seen to have anti inflammatory properties. In a study, a cup of cherries appeared to control future flare ups of gout. Extract of cherries or gout supplement with wild cherry can also be taken along with the usual gout medications to prevent gout attacks.

You can get much more information in detail about which foods to avoid for gout and which gout foods to eat, plus, a whole raft of natural gout remedies by clicking here.

Related Gout Articles:

Diet To Eliminate Gout – Foods To Avoid With Gout

List of Gout Diet Foods to Eat and Gout Foods to Avoid

Aussies And Foods That Cause Gout

Foods to Avoid to Prevent Gout Attacks

Gout Foods to Avoid and Your Weight

Gout Diets – Shocking Gout Diet Foods To Avoid

<a href='http://www.thegoutsite.com/diet-for-gout/adjusting-your-diet-for-gout-what-foods-contribute-to-gout' title='Adjusting Your Diet For Gout?
