Grande Ronde River

The Grande Ronde River offers a scenic rafting trip without too many surprises. It's a great introduction to whitewater and perfect for family adventures. Campsites are on beautiful plateaus with wildflowers and grasses. Wildlife viewing, mountain scenery, hiking and good fishing (click here for guided fishing trips) are some of the highlights on this trip. The water is fast-moving and the Grande Ronde's whitewater is exciting but relatively mild.

In 1988, recognizing the spectacular beauty and outstanding resource values of the river canyon, Congress protected 44 miles of the Grande Ronde as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers system.

On the Grande Ronde River, you will float through evergreen forests with towering ponderosa pines anchored on steep mountainsides. The mountains and river canyon are accented with black basalt cliffs that were created millions of years ago during the great Columbia Basin lava flows. The river corridor has a complex ecosystem rich in plant and animal life.

The Grande Ronde comes from a relatively small watershed so the best rafting is in the late spring and early summer. Rafting trips begin on the Wallowa River for a faster-paced nine miles before it joins the Grande Ronde River at Rondowa. In June and early July, wildflowers are blooming and the air is crisp and pine-scented.

This is a wonderful trip for bird-watching, wildlife viewing and alpine scenery, and the Grande Ronde is also one of the rivers we raft for our River Soul Journeys. Yoga/Meditation/Massage group trips available by request.

USDA Nondiscrimination Statement

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) prohibits discrimination in its programs on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, or marital or family status. (Not all prohibited bases apply to all programs.)
To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights, Room 326-W, Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Avenue SW, Washington, DC 20250-9410, or call 202-720-5964 (voice or TDD). It is also in the top 5 of any river in the U.S. One of the reasons is the warming of the desert sun along with great summer flows. Another reason is that this 12 mile stretch has the highest density of rapids on the Deschutes. You will enjoy such rapids as Upper Wapinitia, Rodeo, Cyclops and Box Car before having a catered lunch break at the City Park in Maupin.

After lunch you can show the pirate in you by enjoying water fights with rafts that dare to float near you. Just as your lunch gets settled, it's back to whitewater with the rapid of the day - Oak Springs. After the thrill of the ride we can stop at White River for a natural water chute which is about .3 miles up stream. Next, if you're not water-logged yet, we can let you out to float through Swimmers Rapid. Finally, Lower Elevator finishes up the trip with a big rolling wave train that goes from bigger to smaller.

At 3 rapids during your trip there will be pictures taken of your boat that will make your trip ever-lasting(NHR has a special discount for being a client at one of the picture shops so be sure to ask). The trip ends at Sandy Beach where there will be a shuttle van waiting to take you back to your vehicle. Let us know how N.H.R. can customize your trip to give you the best possible day on the river.

Is River Rafting Scary?

For some people, the idea of going on the river rafting trip can conjure up images of peril. Concerns about the raft flipping over, or fear of falling from a raft may scare some potential river rafters, holding them on land, while millions of others are flocking to this increasingly popular adventure trip every year. What are the real risks in Whitewater rafting? What are the real statistics of security? One can only wonder...........

Take, for instance, River Trips on the Deschutes River in the State of Oregon ... one of the most popular Whitewater Vacation Destinations in America. On this river guided rafting trips were introduced in 1980, where, for the filling of Whitewater applicants. Today, Natural High Rafting - Whitewater rafting offer daily trips to more than 25 miles from Whitewater Rapids in Oregon's rivers. Over the past three and a half decades, professional rafting outfitters for more than 3 million visitors rafting on more than 25 million mile guided rafting trip (equivalent to a journey to the moon and back 52 times!), racking up an impeccable safety record in the process.

Despite continuing Angst is to subscribe to the fact that some people still call "extreme" sport, in truth, guided rafting trips down the river is statistically safer than getting in your car and driving there. There are several reasons rafting outfitters can make such a remarkable safety record, including:

*They are guided rafting trips. Professional rafting guides are with you all day. They know the river, they know the dangers, they know the best route through the Whitewater, they know how to help you avoid mistakes, and they know what to do if it looks like the situation may start to go wrong. For example, the whitewater guides are trained in swift water rescue, Red Cross First Aid (Standard and Advanced) and PPC. In addition, they collected thousands of hours on the river, have gotten acquainted with each section of the whitewater at each of the dozens of different water levels. This is important because two trips down the exact same stretch of river at different levels of water can lead to drastically different levels of excitation.

*You are in Whitewater raft, not a canoe. If you try this sport in the White water canoe or kayak, it is a totally different ball game. Professional Whitewater Rafts have two things: 1- are hard to flip 2- difficult to puncture. Properly constructed commercial rafts bounce off most boulders, and keep a steady course in a remarkably turbulent water. In most places, you can float through the Whitewater Rapids forward, backward or even sideways, and this is only part of the fun. If you do this in a canoe, kayak or flimsy pool/lake raft, the results can be drastically different, to say the least.

*You wear Whitewater PFD (personal flotation device). It's amazing how many people who take the Do-It-Yourself Approach to rafting, or do not use the right kind of raft, or do not wear a PFD. Going on a commercial rafting trip, wearing a PFD is not an option, it is a requirement. If you unbuckle your PFD, the rafting guide will gently remind you that putting yourself at risk simply "is not acceptable."

Please come and join us on the river you will love the experiance.

Winter Steelhead

Winter Steelhead

Oregon Fishing Trip or fishing vacation opportunities are best for Winter Steelhead in Southern Oregon. Mild weather and good fishing conditions blend with large healthy runs of winter steelhead. Populations of wild winter steelhead far out number hatchery returns. Running 6 to over 20 pounds these steelhead are real tackle testers. Mostly fished with drifted roe from Drift Boats and back-trolled plugs. Action can be intense as multiple hook-ups per day trip are the norm. Your Oregon Fishing Trip or fishing vacation is best planned for January through March.

Rogue River Winter Steelhead Oregon Fishing Trip

Winter Steelhead runs show on the Lower Rogue at Gold Beach first in December with possibly the nations largest run of over 100,000 winter steelhead. Most of these fish are Wild Stocks and will disperse through out the 5000 sq mile drainage of the Rogue Basin. Oregon Steelhead fishing continues to mid March with low pressure and great success. Drift Boats work the area of Foster Bar to Agness drifting roe while below Agness to Gold Beach Power Boats or Jet Sleds anchor with plugs or back-troll. Bank angling is primarily plunking with Spinning Glows or plugs. In the Area below Grants Pass to Graves Creek on the Rogue drift boats work plugs or side drift roe for great catches with best success in February and March. On the Upper Rogue stretches at Medford and Shady Cove late February and March are best fishing trip times with April being a good bet also. This is a great Oregon Fishing Trip or Fishing Vacation destination.

Trask River Fishing Trips

Trask River

The Trask River is a river, approximately 12 mi (19 km) long, in northwestern Oregon in the United States. It drains a mountainous timber-producing area of the Coastal Range west of Portland into the Pacific Ocean .

It rises in two forks. The North Fork (30 mi/48 km long), rises in several forks itself in the Tillamook State Forest in western Washington County west of Forest. It flows generally west into eastern Tillamook County. The South Fork (10 mi/16 km long) rises in southern Tillamook County and flows north. The two forks join in central Tillamook County and the combined stream flows west, past Tillamook, entering the south end of Tillamook Bay on the Pacific northwest of the Tillamook. For its last 1 mi (1.6 km) it forms a common channel with the Tillamook River.

Fishing Seasons on the Trask River:

Spring Chinook: April - June

Fall Chinook: October - November

Coho Salmon: September - November

Winter steelhead: January - March

Sea-run Cutthroat: Trout July - October

Trask Salmon

Trask River

One of the better salmon and steelhead rivers in the area and is very shore angler friendly. However, drift boaters should be aware as this river is for experienced rowers only! The Trask has a lot of fish friendly environment with lots of boulders and gravel stretches which makes the Trask very fly-fishing friendly. Depending on the river conditions you may want to utilize any of the following methods: drift fish bait or artificials, bobber fish bait jigs or plastic worms, throw spinners, and back troll plugs. Typical gear for pursuing steelhead in the river is medium fast (8-17lb) rated casting or spinning rods with 12lb mainline and 24" - 48" 8-10lb fluorocarbon leaders. For salmon a medium heavy (10-20lb) rated casting or spinning rods with 12-50lb mainline and 24" - 48" 20-40lb fluorocarbon leaders.
