I have fallen in love with my blender all over again! I’ve been on this smoothie kick lately and was thinking I would post my recipes for you guys. You can change them up and add whatever you want but just be sure to have at least one green veggie as part of your recipe. Like collards, kale, broccoli, chard or spinach – whatever is in season that you can get your lil nuggets on! Do NOT forget the fruit because if you do it’s gonna taste like shit and you’ll never eat one again. Seriously.

Try to to get your kids hooked on them too! Just never let them see ya make them!

“Collards for the Colon” Smoothie

3 collard green leaves torn up into bite size pieces (blend with a little filtered water until frothy)

handful of blueberries

banana

honey

handful of trail mix

two small apples

tablespoon nut butter

BLEND! BLEND! BLEND! Once smooth, spoon into your fave beverage glass, add a fun straw and enjoy!!

Ok – now for the good stuff! I have some info to share about what I have been told about the swine flu or as the docs on TV like to refer to it as, H1N1.

I am not going to reveal my sources so please do not ask. And this info should be thrown into your already growing pool of info because you are all doing your own research…right?

Here are some things I have learned about this flu and its vaccine. Now you may or may not already know this but if you feel you have something you want to share…comment on this page and I will post. If you are going to be shitty and mean- go someplace else. Like per say, the Gosselins Without Pity site. Those two crazy bitches deserve it. Those poor kids! Money will make you do some crazy shit, right?

Anyways – on to the good stuff!

1) The current H1N1 vaccine has not been tested on anyone. The US Gov tried to take it down to Mexico to run their vaccine studies and the Mexican Gov said “HELL TO THE NO”. So, we get to be the Governments test rats. Or you can be a test rat cuz unless Obama shows up on my doorstep with a M16 and a court order – NO ONE is going to vax me or my family with that crazy mess.

2) Everybody in the medical profession I have talked to has said that they will absolutely NOT vax themselves or their kids with the H1N1 vax. Why not, you ask? Because there has not been enough (or any for that matter) studies done on this vaccine to determine its side effects. Even though Doc Nancy on the Today Show said, with the craziest look on her face she could muster, “This vaccine is 100% safe.” How could she know this if the vaccine has not been tested and we have no idea how this is all going to play out? You guys know how I feel about her. Man, I can’t stand her. And it seems like this is all she talks about lately – its every single day it seems. Enough already!!! Don’t you have a botox party to get to or something! Geesh.

3) Apparently there are Docs out there who are profiting on getting people to sign up for the H1N1 trial. YEP!!!! Pashawwwwwww?! I know…my panties are all knotted up too! I guess I can believe that our Government is PAYING health care experts to recruit Americans to be a part of a vaccine trial study..and it’s big bucks too from what I am hearing. Something like 5K per person. Yep, 5K is all we are worth to the government when it comes down to our health or even our lives. Plus, how many of these participants have health insurance? And what if they get really sick from the vaccine and they don’t have health care? Who pays for their care? What if they die? What happens then? And I wonder how thorough the screening process is? Raise your hand if you think a doctor could be blinded by the shine of 5K and not complete a thorough screening to be sure the person signing up for this trial is really qualified? What are the odds that a doctors office that has multiple locations, has a waiting list a mile long for new patients and is under staffed due to budget cuts will actually take the time to complete a thorough screening of possible participants in the H1N1 vaccine study? I know, I know…getting side tracked. But you have to admit these are all valid questions.

And the icing on the cake…here is it. So if you have noticed, flu shots are being pushed super hard early in the season. Some people I know got flu shots back in September and well, your shot is only good for four months. Which means come February (flu season at it’s peak) you will no longer be covered by the flu vax you got in September. Guess whacha gonna do? You gonna go back to your doc in January and you gonna get a booster baby! So now you’ve paid for TWO flu shots! And my guess is that you’re going to get the flu too. I know of three people this season that have gotten the flu and they are all sick as dogs. Risk it if you want. I’m going to save myself the money from the vaccines and invest in hand sanitizer, masks and pounds of kale. Hopefully my plan will work and I will make it through another flu season unscathed. If I do end up with the flu (which is likely now that Nugget is in preschool), I’ll be sure to blog about it so you can all tell me what an idiot I was for not getting the flu shot.

So the bottom line for us is this…we are not getting the seasonal flu vax or the H1N1 vax. Because from what I’ve been told by med professionals I actually admire and trust…unless you are 100 years old, have a compromised immune system, are an infant or prego…one flu virus is no worse than the other. But to cover my ass, remember I am not a medical professional nor am I giving out medical advice. If you get your medical advice from some crazy bitch’s blog who writes about everything from breastfeeding, to product reviews, recipes and the duration of her menstrual cycles…then maybe a bout of the flu is what your need to straighten your dumbass out. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS. GET THE FACTS AND THEN DECIDE ON THE VAX.

I’ve been gone a while and I’m finally…after months of not blogging….am getting back on track! We moved back in July and it’s been nonstop chaos since then! I have so much I want to talk about…vaccines (oink, oink!), local food (or lack there of), the stress of moving, family drama and the list just goes on. Gotta finish up a little research on the little piggy vaccine and I’ll be back with ya!

To vax or not to vax…that is the question. If you’ve read my blog before you’ll know my view on vax is this – GET YOUR FACTS. Gather all the information you can, talk to other parents, talk to your ped, talk to the Moms (or Dads) you see in the coffee shop, talk to your friends and anyone else you think could offer some insight. Educate yourself as much as possible before you decide one way or the other with regards to vaccinating. Why do I stress this? Because in the age of the internet, unless you are living under a rock or out in space, there is NO reason why you should not be educated on this topic. IF this topic is of concern to you. It may not be. You may be a parent that could not possibly care any less about vaccinating. And if that is you, stop reading this blog and go do something else.

So here’s the skinny. A friend of mine who is pro-vax wanted to share some facts on why it is important to get our kids vaccinated with all shots and on time. And I asked her to put that info together because I wanted to share it with my readers. The reason I’m doing this is because as a community (of parents) we are all shooting for the same goals and I believe in the power of knowledge. And I know that we are stronger together (both sides of the coin) than we are apart. So without further delay…..

Let’s start with the basics. Vaccination is the administration of antigenic material to produce immunity to a disease. Vaccines can prevent or ameliorate (make better the effects of) the effects of the infection by a pathogen. Vaccinations are the most effective and cost effective method of preventing infectious diseases.

Medical opinion is the benefits of preventing suffering and death from infectious disease out weigh the rare adverse effects.

Opposition to vaccinations will cause a loss of “herd immunity” which substantially increases risks to even vaccinated individuals. Few deny the vast improvements vaccinations have made to public health. A more common concern is safety. All vaccines may cause side effects and immunization safety is a real concern. Unlike most other medical interventions vaccines are given to healthy people. As the success of immunization programs increase and the incidence of disease decreases, public attention drifts away from the risks of the disease to the risk of the vaccination and it becomes challenging for health authorities to preserve public support of vaccination programs.

Concerns of vaccine safety follow a pattern. 1) Some investigations suggest that a medical condition of increasing prevalence or unknown cause is an adverse effects of the vaccine. 2) The initial study and subsequent studies by the same group have inadequate methodology. Typically poor controlled or uncontrolled case studies. 3) A premature announcement is made of alleged side effects. 4) The initial study is not reproduced by other groups. 5) It takes several years to regain public confidence.

Autism linked to MMR? The hypothesis that vaccines cause autism are biologically impossible. No link has ever been found in several large studies and no change in rate of autism has occurred when Thimerosal was removed from vaccines a decade ago in Canada and Europe.

MMR became subject to controversy after a publication in the UK’s The Lancet in a 1998 paper by Andrew Wakefield. Reporting a study of 12 children mostly with autism spectrum disorders with the on set soon after the administration of the vaccine. During a 1998 press conference, Wakefield suggested that giving the vaccines in 3 separate doses would be safer than a single dose. This suggestion was not supported by the paper, and several subsequent peer-reviewed studies have failed to show any association between the vaccine and autism. It later emerged that Wakefield’s had been receiving funding from litigants against the vaccine manufactures and that Wakefield had not informed colleagues or medical authorities of his conflict of interest. Had this been known publication in The Lancet would not have taken place. Wakefield has been heavily criticized on scientific grounds for triggering a decline in vaccination rates as well as on ethical grounds for the way the research was conducted. In 2009 The Sunday Times reported Wakefield manipulated patient data and misreported results in his 1998 paper creating the appearance of a link with autism. In 2004 the MMR-and-autism interpretation of the paper was formally retracted by 10 of Wakefield’s 12 co-workers.

The CDC (Center of Disease Control), the IOM of the National Academy of Sciences and the UK National Health Service have all concluded that there is no evidence of a link between the MMR vaccine and autism. A systematic review by the Cochran Library also concluded that there is no credible link and the lack of confidence in MMR has damaged public health.

On a side note a special court convened in the US to review claims under the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program ruled on Feb 12, 2009 that parents of autistic children are not entitled to compensation in their contention that certain vaccines caused autism in their children.

Did you know there is evidence that schizophrenia is associated with prenatal exposure to Rubella, Influenza, and Toxoplasmosis infection. One study found a seven fold increase risk of schizophrenia when mothers were exposed to the influenza virus in the first trimester of gestation.

Those are the facts. MMR is NOT related and does NOT cause autism. You can go to Healthline and search autism. Click on the word in the center column. It will bring you to the causes, incidence and risk factors. It completely supports what I have said.

If you question another vaccine and don’t think you want to give it to your child, lets get the facts. Remember children don’t ask to be born we choose to have them. Therefore, it is our responsibility to give the EVERY chance to live a long, healthy, happy life.

Ok – it’s been a few hot minutes since I last posted and I’ve missed ya’ll so very much. Really, I have. But I just have not felt inspired and I needed to step away for a bit to get the blogging juices flowing once again. I was feeling burnt out and not that into it. I told myself that once blogging started to feel like a job – I would step away. So I did and I’m feeling refreshed. Did ya miss me? Hope so!

What a shitty two weeks it has been. MRIs, mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies and the waiting. The damn waiting! The good news is that I’m in the clear and the two masses were benign. There isn’t really any bad news in all of this. I’ve learned a lot and want to shout it all from the mountaintops to anyone that will listen! GET YOUR FLIPPING MAMMO ALREADY! If you have insurance call and ask them when you can get your first baseline…if they say 35 and you’re around that age….GO GET A MAMMOGRAM! If you’re nursing, you can still get a mammo done. It will not do any harm to your or your milk. Lactating breasts are a little harder to get an accurate mammo..but you still can get one. Just take your little one with you and let them nurse right before the exam. Get your facts on your family history and share this info with your doc. If your doc tells you that you do not need a mammo yet but you really want one -schedule a mammo anyways or get another doc. This is your body and your choice. Now if you’re 15 – you probably don’t need one. But if you’re in your mid thirties there is no reason why you can’t get one!
