[Four] Wrap your hair at night.

Don’t forsake protecting your hair at bedtime due to laziness. It’s still very important to maintain a regular routine in all areas of your life even if you do not have a daily schedule. Use bar soap for showering. It lasts much longer than liquid or foam soap. It is also less expensive and you get more for your money.
Save your bar soap once it’s too small to use. Store tiny pieces in a large plastic container. When you store up a large amount, you will be able to use it again by melting the soap for laundry detergent.
Save your paper towels. If you use paper towels to dry your hands in the kitchen, save your paper towels and let them air dry and re-use them for spills on the floor. You might even want to start using a hand towel for drying your hands as an alternative.
Preserve your laundry. Cut down on washing your clothes. Being quarantined means that you do not have to constantly switch out your outfits. Since you will mostly be lounging around, you can wear clothing a few times before washing. (except underwear and socks). J
Save plastic or glass jars from your kitchen items. You can save tomato sauce jars, spray bottles and other items to be used to store additional items. For example, putting bleach in a re-used small spray bottle so you can carry with you when going to the grocery store especially if you run out of Clorox wipes.
Take time to relax. Make sure you get enough sleep. Getting enough sleep is critical to your overall health. You also will avoid feeling more stressed and able to function with clarity and hopefully a peace of mind.
Get Creative. Focus on a hobby or craft, listen to music, read a book, learn something new. This is a time to tap into creativity and explore things you’ve been wanting to do.
Get a phone book. Develop an emergency plan. Do you have all of your contact phone numbers stored in a manual book that is easily accessible? Do not store permanent information on your devices. Have a backup plan on how to contact your family and friends.
Develop a plan for an emergency. Do you know where to meet up with family or friends in case of an emergency? Do you have an emergency kit packed and ready?
Don’t be wasteful. This is a time to learn not to waste anything. Think outside the box before you are quick to throw things away. Make sure you are being a good steward of everything you own and use wisdom, common sense and good judgment. Make conscious buying decisions based on your situation and circumstances.
Do not use toilet paper to wrap sanitary napkins. To save on toilet paper, just roll and wrap in the plastic wrapper it came in or use old magazines or newspapers (if you have some).

As we age, we need to maintain hydration, elasticity and a natural moisture balance. There are many methods to achieving this goal which also includes a healthy, well-balanced diet.

Your first priority is to maintain your overall health but in addition, is that you should maintain the largest organ which is your skin.

Three types of lubricates to moisturize your skin effectively.

Each one of these lubrications delivers hydration and softens skin. It also seals in moisture and aids in water retention to the skin.

It can be overwhelming and very confusing when searching for the right products for the condition of your skin. Some products can make your skin feel even drier. It can also cause inflammation, redness or increase itching and irritation.

However, if you have health issues and/or taking medications it may result in side effects. Also, it is not recommended to take melatonin if you are pregnant or nursing.

Worst Things to do Before Bedtime

Do not eat large meals before bedtime
Do not drink alcohol beverages or caffeine (including coffee, tea, or soda)

Curb high energy activities that increase the heart rate and stimulate the brain
Make an effort not to nap during the day which can disrupt the normal sleep pattern
Keep the room temperature at a comfortable setting (not too hot or too cold)

By using these methods and developing healthy habits that enhance a better sleeping pattern, it will hopefully decrease restlessness and disruptions in your sleep. Nothing is better than a good night’s sleep.

Beauty is subjective. We place so much emphasis on appearances. Whether it’s fashion, hair or makeup for women or material objects, prestige or physical attributes for men. We are all guilty of focusing too much attention on external appearances or what makes us feel more attractive, powerful or successful.

People tend to judge you on your appearance. The more “Put-together” you appear people will either admire or envy you. Studies show that people perceive beauty with people who are smarter or more successful. In reality, your outside appearance has nothing to do with your knowledge or experience.

We also will not stay young forever. The amount of time, money or energy you put into your appearance will eventually fade as life moves on. No matter how much Botox or plastic surgery you decide to get the underlying factor is that you will still age and your beauty will eventually fade.

What value do you place on working on your emotional, mental, spiritual or psychological parts of who you are? When you take extra time to work on your character, abilities or talents, or peace of mind, it pays off in how you feel about yourself. Releasing negative thoughts are equally important to elevate your mindset.

It’s hard to dig deep and reflect on your past experiences and reflect on what you’ve learned. It’s even harder to forgive someone who has deeply hurt you.

The value you place on developing yourself and becoming a better, quality person overrides the latest trends in fashion, hair or makeup. Who are you becoming? What do you want to change about yourself? How do you really feel about yourself? Are you honest? Are you truly happy with the decisions you made in your life? Or are you only expressing the sides that you want people to see? Taking time to self-evaluate yourself is not a bad idea. When you spend time alone, you can purge out all the things in your life that are not bringing you joy. Over time you will improve your self-esteem, self-worth, and self-confidence.

When you feel good about yourself on the inside, it will truly reflect on the outside. You will not be quick to compare yourself to others. It’s not an overnight process. It takes time, dedication and persistence plus a lot of hard work. It’s not something you can buy or order for a quick-fix but it will be well worth the investment in your self-care and overall health.

It’s a life-changing process that can never compare to buying a new pair of shoes or wearing the latest eyelash extensions. You will no longer feel empty and chase after superficial things. It’s only after you have built up your inside that you can flourish on the outside. You will feel even more attractive and beautiful. You will have an inner glow. Your personality will shine because you truly feel comfortable in your own skin. You also will not want to abuse your body or mind by using toxic substances whether alcohol, cigarettes or even having unprotected sex.

Of course, you shouldn’t deny yourself of the things that improve your appearance but you need to have a balance and not only focus on the external factors that eventually leave you feeling less than. Are you free? Or are you influenced by other’s opinions, expectations or judgments of you?

Self-acceptance is something we all struggle with – both men and women alike. From childhood, we are molded and shaped by our family, peers, mentors, and environment.

Unfortunately, we tend to lose our true self-identity (who we are, what we enjoy and what we become). It even gets worse when we are young adults as we are often confused about what we should do or what we are good at. We are often forced to attend a specific college or university, major in degrees of no real interest, work a job that we hate or even marry and have children because it’s expected of us.

We come to realize that we are flawed individuals that allowed our environments to dictate who we should be and why without taking a pause in life to see what truly makes us content and satisfied. (Notice I did not mention the word, “Happy.”)

Happy is what the external world can possibly provide which is the source of tangible things usually defined by fortune, pleasure or delight but joy is something intangible and we receive despite our challenges, circumstances or difficult situations.

Somehow, you walk through life with blindfolds, blinders or a microscope either ignoring the desires of your heart, focusing only on what’s in front of you with no idea of what’s happening around you or analyzing everything about yourselves and everyone that crosses your path.

With the impact of social media, it seems like your flaws are much more magnified as you compare yourselves and your life to others.

It’s easy to lose sight of your voice, dreams, desires, goals, and everything that makes you unique. Everyone wants to sound the same, act the same, and look the same. Your true identity and authentic self is lost in a world of comparison and competition.

Sometimes, you can be your own worst self-critic and fill your mind with such negative talk that it can self-sabotage all that you set out to accomplish.

It takes inner work to begin to accept your differences and embrace your flaws regardless of worldly influences.

Once you begin to love who you truly are, you will be more accepting of others and their shortcomings.

Bridging the gap will involve diligence and persistence. There is no such thing as a finish line and it will always be a work in progress. In other words, self-acceptance is a growth journey that continuously evolves. There are no short cuts.

Here are a few tips to help build your self-awareness and confidence in becoming the best version of you.

Embrace daily affirmations that strengthen your mind and soul.
Take time to indulge in a self-care routine. Make sure you focus on all areas of your mind, body and soul.
Write a list of all of your accomplishments to acknowledge just how far you've come along the way
Set goals and develop a plan to achieve them.
Trust your intuition
Spend time alone. Turn off your phone, TV and social media notifications.
Pray for wisdom and strength.
Take a leap of faith. Do something outside of your comfort zone.
Trust the process.

When you embrace your flaws, you're accepting the parts of yourself that you find hard to love even if others are not aware of them. Whether it be physical, emotional or situational, your flaws become much smaller when you give less power to them. As you begin to let go of other's expectations and opinions, you will find peace and inner joy that can't be reckoned with.

No longer are women held to the defining image of a blue-eyed, blonde-haired Barbie doll image as the status of beauty.

Women of color have redefined the color spectrum of beauty. From fair to dark skin, melanin is captivating and shaping our perspective on beauty.

Women have stepped into their true essence and natural raw beauty and no longer allowing the media to dictate what is considered beautiful. The curve of our hips and the plump of our lips have plastic surgeons scrambling to keep up with the cosmetic requests of altering European features to resemble the characteristics and the physique of colored women.

Cultural appropriation has played a vital role in how European, Asian as well as other racial groups and ethnicities are crossing cultural lines to identify or claim the fashion, music, style, culture, and language of other minority groups.

Not only are women of color redefining their physical attributes but they are also redefining the negative stereotypes that have been embedded in a racist and bias mindset for centuries.

She is redefining her strength. Through many life challenges, disadvantages, and lack of opportunities, she is reclaiming her time and showing the inner strength of her character. More black women are graduating with a Master’s degree, building their own businesses or being promoted into CEO roles. They are the backbone of their families, mentors to their friends and role models for their children.

She is redefining her power. She is not allowing society to strip her of self-confidence or her self-esteem. She is digging deep to acknowledge her truth, courage, and boldness. She is not shrinking down to dim her light but shining bright like the diamond she truly is.

She is redefining leadership. She is conscientious in how she leads others. No longer in competition with other women but she is comfortable with acknowledging the contributions, talents, gifts, and skills that other’s bring to the table which helps establish and build instead of tear down and destroy others.

She is redefining her identity. She understands her rich history – where she was and where she is going. She learns from her past and reclaims and shapes her future. She understands who she is and who she is not, neither is she ashamed or condemned by it. She is not moved by fear of what others think about her. She is not afraid to stand alone or with a crowd of people different from her. She has fully accepted her being and is at peace with herself.

She is redefining her impact. She is aware of the subtle yet bold impact she carries in the world. Her creative nature embodies a unique flavor of charisma that's indistinctively her own.

She is redefining her influence. She realizes her potential and her voice. She takes the authority to reign in her area of promotion. She does not hold back from stating the realities in the world and addressing problems in her own circle or in the world. She clearly articulates her opinions, thoughts, and ideas without compromise.

She is redefining her self-image. She is no longer comparing herself to false notions of her value, worth, and beauty. She understands the quality she possesses within is uncompromising, unstoppable and undeniable. She is virtuous and complete.

It's important to share your plans or concerns with your spouse, family members, roommates, and friends so everyone will be on the same page. Sometimes, people will not understand that you need time alone but if you clearly express your concerns it will help them understand where you're coming from.

Eliminate the distractions

Evaluate the people in your circle. Do they encourage, motivate and inspire you on do they tear down, discourage on drain your energy? Eliminate any distractions that cause you stress or procrastination. Turn off your phone. Get off social media. It may be hard to cut family or friends out of your environment but you can keep them at an arm's distance.

Be mindful of your friends, co-workers, and associates. Remember people need to earn your trust as well as your time.

Eat healthy

I’m a strong advocate for building community in whatever capacity you desire. Creating a circle of dependable and reliable associates is the best place to learn from others, develop your strengths, work on your weaknesses and hone new skills.

it takes time to nurture a friendship, partnership or network but it’s well worth the investment. When you have people that you can trust and confide in, it makes life just a little bit sweeter.

Sometimes, it’s challenging to find the right people that align with your purpose, values, goals, interest or mission. It can feel lonely when people do not support or understand your vision. It takes a healthy, balanced relationship with an equal exchange of commitment.

Here are four important measuring rules to gauge a friendship:

Product Review: Camille Rose Almond Jai Butter | Is it Worth the Hype?

I finally tried Camille Rose Almond Jai Butter which was an unexpected impulse purchase after seeing a flood of advertisements and testimonials on Instagram.

When I opened the jar, girl! The scent was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! It smells so good! I wasn’t sure whether I should eat it or put it on my hair! It has a vanilla-type scent but smells like a cake batter or some type of dessert. It’s not a strong, sweet scent but it has a very appealing fragrance.

What I noticed was that the scent faded when I opened the jar after a couple of weeks so it doesn't have the strong aroma like it once did.

The soft pink butter has an extremely smooth and thick consistency. My fingers glided across the top like butter frosting. My fingers did not feel sticky or greasy either. It was like a body moisturizer that melted into my skin. I instantly fell in love with the product even before putting it on my hair. I tried using Camille Rose on dry, wet and blow-dried hair. Each application provided similar results.

The first time I used this product was on freshly, blow-dried hair. Due to its intense moisturizing benefits, it quickly reverted my hair texture. Due to the shrinkage, I would not recommend using this product on blow-dried hair.

I immediately knew that this product would provide amazing results on freshly washed hair after my experience on blow dried hair.

I used a leave-in conditioner as well as a conditioning moisturizer before adding the Camille Rose styling butter. My curls were popping for days!

It held te moisture in my twist for five days without needing to refresh my hair. I had well-defined curls and my hair was springy, and light. Never in my life have I experienced such positive results on my hair journey.

Miss Rose on Dry Hair

When my hair needed to be re-twisted, I applied the almond jai butter on each section. However, I noticed it was not gliding through my hair as easily so I added a light oil by Natty and it really helped along with adding my water spritz.

My twist out didn’t look much different than when it was used on wet hair. I had defined curls that were well-moisturized with bouncy, springy ringlets.

I would definitely recommend this product because it softens, hydrates and strengthens the hair and the results are outstanding!. You also don’t have to use much because it’s concentrated. Although it is quite expensive, it is well worth the purchase to achieve quality styles and maintain healthy hair.

Besides the extra coin, it is well worth every curl, twist, and coil!

Texture ID Styling Review

I recently purchased three products from the Texture ID line.

Originally, it piqued my interest because I wanted to achieve a defined Wash and Go style for a 4C texture, so that was the main reason for selecting these products.

The brand is highly recommended for 4C hair types. So, let me share my personal opinion, experience, and final results.

Now, let’s get started!

First Impressions

The overall product packaging is super cute! I like the color coordination and they provide a good amount of product for the price. Yeah, each item only costing $8.00 and some change! At the time that I purchased the product, they had a giveaway which came with a super cute tote bag! Yay! I love it!

Intense Moisturizing Leave-in Conditioner

The leave-in spray includes aloe vera extract, coconut oil, and honey. It promotes moisture and softness while sealing the cuticle. I have to say as soon as I sprayed it on, it was extremely smooth and my hair was easily detangled without any tugs or pulls. My hair was super soft with a smooth texture. It was extremely easy to comb through. You do not need to use a lot of the product because it is well-concentrated and a little goes a long way.

Overall, I was extremely impressed with how easily it detangled my hair. I will definitely add this product to my list. It may just have bumped two of my other liquid leave-in’s right out of the box too. It’s definitely worth all the hype.

Styling Crème

I used the styling crème to perm rod twist my hair instead of using it for a Wash and Go. Again, you do not have to use a lot of the product. I used a nickel-size amount on each section and that was more than enough. I made sure to massage each section until I saw the strands clump together in a conformed curly pattern.

The key ingredients include cocoa butter, coconut oil, and shea butter. It provides medium hold while retaining moisture and elasticity. The styling crème is recommended for twist outs, rod sets, and protective styles.

The styling crème has an extremely strange consistency. It felt like melted marsh mellows! However, it was not sticky. It just felt pretty cool when I dipped my fingers in the jar!

Unfortunately, the biggest con was the scent. It smells terrible!!! It smells like a combination of jet fuel or oil under the hood of your car!!! It doesn’t smell like something you put in your hair and makes me wonder what the brand was thinking when they created this product.

I did not use this product alone. I layered it with the Design Essentials Coconut Monoi Moisturizer for extra hydration. Overall, my hair felt well-moisturized but there was a little shrinkage as I made sure my hair was extremely wet while twisting my hair.

Honestly, I’m on the fence about this product, plus I still need to see how it works on a Wash and Go so I cannot fairly rate this product. Overall, it’s not a bad product to keep on the shelf for quick styling options when you don’t have much time for higher maintenance styles. I’m sure this styling aid would work best for twist outs.

Thermal Multi-Styling Foam

Lastly, I used the heat protectant styling mousse for blow drying my locks, however, this was a big, big mistake! I did not use any other products besides the Texture ID Leave-in. The mousse was enormously frothy. I used 1 to 2 pumps for each section and it felt like I was raking the blow dryer through my hair! It took an exceptionally a long time to dry each section. I also wasted so much of the product because I was consistently wiping the excess mousse on my towel. It was a very messy process not to mention time-consuming. It took forever to blow dry my hair!

Compared to my other heat protectant mousse by Nubian Heritage, this product is not moisturizing or hydrating at all. It also has no slip and my hair felt like a bag of crunchy Doritos after it dried.

The only pro that I noticed was that my ends did not pop off while blow drying. My biggest mistake was not adding a moisturizer to coat the hair shaft before applying heat.

In comparison, I did not have to add additional products to the Nubian Heritage mousse and my hair was so soft and manageable.

The Texture ID Thermal Styling Foam is recommended for wrap styles, roller sets and blow drying. It states it can hold up to 450 degrees to protect from heat damage.

The key ingredients include wheat protein, Argan oil, and honey. It states that it strengthens and protects hair from breakage and improves shine and elasticity.

I do believe it strengthens your hair and protects it from breakage, however, I would definitely recommend layering the product with a moisturizer. I feel the mousse would be great for roller sets under a hooded dryer.

I would take precautions and make sure you balance the right amount of moisture when using these products because they tend to be drying due to the wheat protein. However, the leave-in conditioner is definitely hydrating and will definitely be one of my go-to leave-in conditioners for my regular wash days.

Spring is finally here! And with spring comes change and transformation. When you prep for the summer season, one thing that helps with flawless makeup application is having a smooth, even toned complexion, especially when you have to deal with unwanted breakouts, discoloration or aging skin.

Sweat and humidity are known for clogging the pores and leads to more acne when the surface is clogged with dirt, oil and makeup residue.

Cleanse Daily

Cleansing the face and body is the most important step in your regimen. Your facial cleanser should be the right match for your skin type (oily, dry or combination). Sticking to a daily regimen provides a base for your skin to excrete all dirt, oil, makeup and pollutants from the environment.

Finding a daily cleanser that provides moisture without stripping the skin of its natural oils and preferably provides a PH-balance would be ideal.

Exfoliate Regularly

One to try is using a few teaspoons of brown sugar or white granulated sugar and honey. Depending on your skin, you may need to exfoliate three (3) times or less per week or at least once per week.

Be Toner Ready

A great natural toner for your skin would be rosewater or lavender water with a few drops of Vitamin E which works like a charm as a facial toner. It is a great refresher in the warmer months and clarifies the skin and aids with eliminating discolorations with regular use. You can either purchase an atomizer or just dab a few drops on a cotton ball. It smells so good! Ahhh, so fresh and so clean!

Mask to Unmask Beauty

A facial mask helps tighten the pores and provides elasticity to the skin. There are so many different types of masks for different needs on the market but one to try would simply be egg whites. Just crack one egg and separate the yolk.

Use the egg white with a facial brush to brush onto the face. It can be quite messy but you will be pleased with the final results.

As the egg white hardens, you will feel your face tighten. Try not to place the egg whites around your eyes as this is a delicate area of the face. Simply wash off. Over time your skin will look vibrant and youthful.

Charcoal masks are very popular too. So, you can shop a variety of brands at your local drugstore.

Moisturizing is a Must

I would recommend using a moisturizer that is dermatologist recommended. One thing that I’ve been using which has been transformed the texture of my skin is almond oil. It tends to penetrate into the skin’s surface once applied and does not leave an oily residue especially if you have dry skin.

When you first apply, it may feel oily but it slowly absorbs into the skin. It is light moisturizer which helps improve discolorations and scars over time with consistent use. It is also great to use after a shower or bath to lock in moisture.

I prefer using the almond oil at night to avoid producing oil on my face during the day but I have used the oil under my makeup during cooler days and I didn’t have any issues with shine or greasiness (but it all depends on your skin type).

Vitamin E, almond and coconut oil tends to absorb into the skin very easily. It’s all according to your preference and skin type. There are so many organic moisturizers to try.

There are many healing elements with natural based products. Just make sure you choose one based according to your skin type and you may also want to do a patch test just in case you are allergic to some of the organic ingredients.

Bonus Tips

Lastly, two more bonuses in preparing for the journey to natural skincare includes drinking a lot of water and getting enough sleep. These two preventative measures will aid in rebuilding your cells and ensuring proper organ function. They go hand in hand to better overall health. Getting the proper amount of rest also helps reduce stress levels.

The Process

First, I applied my leave-in conditioner, oil, moisturizer and hair gel on wet or damp hair.

Of course, you can’t just rake the brush through your hair. So, I used my wide to comb to eliminate any tangles and snags prior to brushing. If you come across, any single strand or fairy knots, it’s best to detangle with your fingers and simply snip the knot.

After you have thoroughly combed through your hair, I normally start towards the middle to the end of a small section of hair and slowly start brushing.

Depending on your hair type, it may not go through on the first pass. As for me, it took a couple of passes before it slid through my hair. With each pass, it provided amazing definition and left me with bouncy, popping curls.

The overall performance and final results exceeded my expectation. It is definitely a hair tool that’s worth investing in!

Product Review: The Mane Choice Styling Gel

Those of you who’ve been reading my blog for some time understands that I’m not a fan of hair gels. I don’t like the hard, stiff feeling or the residue it normally leaves behind.

However, I’m late to the party when it comes to trying the Mane Choice hair gel. This product is one to try! I was pleasantly surprised with my final results!

It’s a soft, bluish-purple color and it is super smooth. This product has a very loose consistency but a slimy texture. It is not sticky and melts directly into the hair. It has a very nice smell with a light fragrance.

What’s in this stuff?

The product consists of biotin, avocado oil, and vitamin E. It does not contain mineral oil, petroleum, parabens, sulfates or formaldehyde. Due to its natural-based ingredients, it doesn’t strip the hair like alcohol-based gels. It acts as a moisturizer instead of over-drying the hair.

How did I use the product?

I used the product to twist my hair and roller set on freshly washed hair. It provided a medium hold and curled my strands perfectly while twisting each section.

Once dried, my hair felt so light and airy. It was super bouncy! I really liked how loose and free. I did not have any flakes and absolutely no residue. It also was very shiny which is so unusual since I have such a hard time achieving with such a tight, curl pattern.

I’m looking forward to using it to style an updo or a slick, high bun to test how it maintains slicking back my edges or nape of the neck.

Overall, I definitely would recommend trying this product. As far as I’m concerned it does a tremendous job to enhance your curl pattern and it would be great for shingling or coiling the hair. I also feel it would be great for wash and go’s which I shamelessly have never tried (don't judge me) but I’m curious about trying this style once the summer rolls around.

Product Review: Nubian Heritage Heat Protect Mousse

I’ve been on a roll with Nubian Heritage products. So, another product I just had to try was the heat protect mousse. Now, I normally don’t blow dry my hair during the spring or summer but winter or fall is the best time of year to heat style your hair since there is a lack of humidity and moisture in the air.

The Process

I washed my hair, as usual, using the Nubian Heritage co-wash and deep conditioning treatment, however, I did not use any oil or moisture based products on my hair while blow-drying. I simply used a leave-in conditioning spray by Shea Moisture and then sectioned my hair into small sections.

I applied one pump of mousse per section and combed through. I used my Conair blow dryer to smooth my strands and stretch my hair. After blow-drying, I followed up with extra virgin olive oil and ORS Olive Oil moisturizer and twisted each section.

The Review

I have to say that the mousse was very frothy and light. It was less dense than what I anticipated. Even as I shook the bottle and pumped, the product tended to become thinner than the first pump. It had slight bubbles and became a slight liquid consistency.

It provided my hair with strength and I did not have any breakage when applying the heat to my hair. I paid close attention to my ends as most of the time when I blow dry, my ends tend to pop off. However, my ends were very smooth and sealed.

My hair felt very light and fluffy after heat styling. It also prevented shrinkage for at least two weeks. I was simply amazed how well this product performed on my 4C hair texture.

I also used this product with the deep conditioning treatment and co-wash by Nubian Heritage which aids in the overall performance of the product.

If you are struggling with weak, fragile hair or hair damage, I would definitely recommend this line of products to regain elasticity, strength, moisture, and retention. Do not expect the conditioner to slide through the hair. It does not contain silicones, but it will definitely provide healthy hair.

Nubian Heritage Deep Conditioning Treatment

As far as the mousse, my only disappointment was the consistency of the foam. I really wish it was a thick, foam with body and substance.

Although I don’t plan on heat styling my hair on a regular basis, it is a great product to keep on the shelf as a styling option. I highly recommend this product to protect your hair from frizzy, flyaway, heat damaged hair.

Product Review: Nubian Heritage Indian Hemp and Tamanu Co-Wash

I recently purchased the co-wash conditioner by Nubian Heritage.

Since I love their deep penetrating conditioning treatment, I just had to see how their co-wash works! And yes, it is amazing!

It is a white, creamy texture which is similar to a thick body lotion. It I very smooth and feels luxurious in your hair.

The conditioner is a lotion-based formula made with bamboo, garlic extract, and monoi. It also contains shea butter, coconut oil, rose oil and seed oil. It is sulfate-free and color safe and is recommended for over-processed or color treated hair. It does not strip the hair of its natural oils and leaves the hair well-hydrated. It is specifically made for textured, dry and damaged hair.

It contains no harsh chemicals, parabens, gluten or dyes. The product is lightweight and massages into the hair easily. It has a perfume scent but gently fades away once it is rinsed out of the hair.

As I applied the conditioner, it was so smooth and creamy. It absorbed directly into my hair. It definitely did not coat or sit on top of my hair but penetrated my hair shaft.

The co-wash conditioner left my hair feeling ultra soft! I left the conditioner on for 1 1/2 hours which is much longer than I intended because I used the heat conditioning cap.

While rinsing my hair, it was so soft that I was afraid that I over-conditioned it which can cause affect the PH balance of the hair. However, there was not even a dime size of hair left in the shower.

The second time I used the conditioner I used as a pre-poo. It prepped my hair for shampooing because my hair was extra dry due to lack of maintenance during the week.

It rinses out super easy and left my hair extra soft. I did not have any tangles or fairy knots and the comb easily slid through my hair without a struggle.

During the summer months, this co-wash would be perfect to use on a regular basis especially since you will wash your hair more frequently due to the heat and humidity plus chlorine at the poolside.

The only negative that I found was in the packaging. I really wish it came in a pump bottle or jar. I found it difficult to squeeze the product out of the hard plastic container. It also has a perfume scent which I’m not a fan of. I love my hair to have a fresh, clean scent. I’m glad that the scent doesn’t linger in your hair so I can deal with it.

Nubian Heritage gave my hair life!

My hair was fluffy, pillow soft and so manageable! I followed up with the Shea Moisture Coconut Oil Leave-in treatment where the comb simply glided through my hair with no snags.

This is one product that you can’t afford to sleep on. It’s great for quick touch-ups (between regular wash days) while leaving your hair well-moisturized. It does not leave your hair sticky or weighed down. It also doesn’t strip the hair of its natural oils.

The conditioner will be fighting for the #1 spot in my pre-poo regimen alongside with my Tresemme conditioner and As I Am Co-wash.

If you’re seeking an easy solution to combat dry or damaged hair, you may want to try this basic co-wash cleanser. It’s a simple, 3-step system to help cleanse, condition and moisture your hair in all one bottle! What I love most about it is that it’s a multipurpose product and so versatile because you can use it a variety of ways: Co-wash cleanser, pre-poo or conditioner.

It is also great for traveling since it’s a multipurpose conditioner, plus the bottle is not too big - only 12 fl. oz which is perfect for short trips, especially when you don’t want to fuss too much over your hair.

Product Review: The Heating Gel Cap by Diane

So far, it’s been a mild winter but one thing I don’t like is conditioning and styling my hair in the dead of winter. Nothing is worse than walking around inside with a cold, wet head.

After browsing on Amazon, I found this heating cap and I just have to share!

When I took it out the box, I was very surprised to feel how heavy it was. It has a wide elastic band with rows of squared gel packets that lines the inside of the cap with a waffle-like pattern. The cap is much smaller than expected so if you have extremely thick or longer hair, this cap may not work for you.

My Initial Experience

With my first use, I shampooed and conditioned my hair as normal. The instructions stated to put the cap in the microwave for one minute. It did not feel very warm but I followed the instructions because I did not want to overheat the gel. I put on a clear, plastic conditioning cap under the heated gel cap to safeguard or prevent my conditioner from making a mess and getting it all inside the gel cap.

I left the conditioner on longer than I anticipated because I was caught up doing other things like scrolling my profiles on social media. J

After about 1½ hours, I washed out my conditioner. The heating cap stayed warm the entire time and my body temperature actually rose while I wore the cap especially right before rinsing my hair.

My hair was super soft and what I liked the most was that it was warm and cozy. It was so much better than wearing a clear, plastic cap on my cold, wet head!

Takeaways

Pros

Mobility – You have the ability to move around and not be stuck under a hairdryer.

Heat protection – The gel heating cap locks in the heat for a long period of time. Very warm, cozy and comfortable. In result, it allows the conditioner to penetrate the hair shaft which aids in deep conditioning treatments.

Cons

Weight – It was very heavy while wearing the cap. You must have strong neck muscles to withstand the weight. If you deal with neck pain, I would not recommend this product.

Size – It’s too small for the average size head but will probably work for TWA’s or short, cropped or pixie hairstyles.

Overall, there is value in purchasing the product. It does the job and is very convenient to use.

DIY: Simple 5-minute Hair Mayonnaise Treatment

Throughout my hair journey, I’ve tried so many natural hair products that I’ve fallen in love with over time. Many of them have been my staple products in my daily regimen. Every now and then, I also like to create my own Do-It-Yourself (DIY) concoctions.

One hair treatment that has made a big difference in my hair the past few months has been my homemade hair mayonnaise treatment. It’s really simple to make and provides extra body and strength.

Since I’ve been using my hair mayonnaise treatment, I’ve had overall less hair breakage. Literally, I have decreased my normal hair shedding by 85% from just using this treatment. It’s provided amazing results.

Although I will continue using my regular haircare products as well as trying new ones, this treatment will definitely be part of my regular wash day routine.

The benefits of any DIY treatment is that you have ultimate control over the ingredients and can alter the recipe for what works for your hair.

The Secret Sauce: Hair Mayonnaise Treatment

What you will need:

Small plastic bowl
Tablespoon
Teaspoon
Almond Oil
Castor oil
Jojoba oil

(If you would like, you can substitute oils listed with olive, grapeseed or coconut oil).

After shampooing, scoop three (3) or more tablespoons of Mayonnaise into a bowl.

Add 2 teaspoons of almond oil
Add 2 teaspoons of jojoba oil
Add 1 teaspoon of castor oil

[You may add 2 tablespoons of plain, Greek yogurt to add thickness to the mixture. You can also add a teaspoon of honey to hold it together.] Mix well.

(Note: The mixture will tend to be loose especially once as your natural body temperature heats the conditioning treatment).

(Suggestion: Let your mixture sit at room temperature to avoid applying cold on wet hair).

Apply the treatment to each section. Massage through each section. Lightly comb through and twist or wrap hair sections. Put on a plastic cap. It helps to use a Turbie Twist over a plastic cap to avoid messy drips.

Leave on for 15 to 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

You will definitely need a detangling spray since this DIY treatment does not have extra slip especially if you’re accustomed to commercial conditioners.

The almond oil does provide softness and sheen to the hair. The castor oil also thickens the strands and seals the ends while jojoba oil moisturizes the hair. The honey will also act as a humectant.

Over a period of time, you will notice less hair breakage as long as you are maintaining your hair properly.

Product Review: Shea Moisture Coconut Oil Leave-in Treatment

If you are searching for a quick leave-in conditioner, you may want to try the 100% virgin coconut oil treatment made with coconut milk and acacia Senegal.

This instant conditioner is great for all hair types. It is sulfate free and safe for color-treated hair. It also aids in protection from blow-drying too.

Of course, if you are a fan of Shea Moisture, you already know that it does not contain parabens, mineral oil, propylene glycol, phthalates or petroleum.

It is a white, lightweight milky liquid and has a light coconut scent with a hint of perfume-like aroma.

My first time using it was on freshly washed hair. I used the LOC method and sprayed the leave-in conditioning treatment as the first step to detangle my hair.

I did not find that this instant conditioner had much slip. It combed through easily but I prefer to use the Shea Moisture Detangling Spray instead. However, I feel the leave-in treatment moisturized the hair and left it soft and manageable.

My next step moving forward is to try this product during the blow-drying process. Although it’s not a heat protectant, it will shield your curls from dryness yet provide elasticity.

Overall, I rate this product in the neutral zone. I’m not in a love relationship but at the same time, it’s not on the do not use list.

It’s just another one of Shea Moisture’s unlimited options for the product junkie to try!

What is Alopecia?

Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder. It directly affects the hair follicles on the skin’s surface. In result, you will begin to lose hair in circular patches sporadically on the scalp.

This condition affects an estimated 2% of Americans which equals 6.8 million people. It also does not discriminate and affects male and female counterparts as well as any age or race. Most people will experience symptoms of hair loss under the age of 30. Children are also impacted by the disorder.

The physical appearance of baldness can often be confused with someone who has been diagnosed with cancer and receiving chemotherapy treatments. However, alopecia is benign and not life-threatening.

Alopecia is known to be a genetic disorder. One out of five family members could be diagnosed with the condition who carry the gene. There are related autoimmune disorders such as thyroiditis and vitiligo which have genetic ties to the family history of alopecia.

Types of Alopecia

Alopecia Areata

The most common type is Alopecia Areata. When white cells begin to attack cells in the hair follicles, it causes inflammation and eventually causes hair loss. You will begin to randomly lose quarter size patches of hair anywhere located on the scalp area.

Alopecia Totalis

This type of alopecia is the complete loss of hair on the scalp. In this case, there may possibly be permanent hair loss.

Alopecia Universalis is the most severe condition. It is complete hair loss on the entire body. It affects all facial hair such as eyebrows, nose hair, scalp, legs, underarms and pubic area (wherever there is hair growth).

Alopecia Barbae is a very specific form of the condition where there's facial hair loss such as a beard.

Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia is the most known form of hair loss however it is not considered a genetic disorder. The hair loss is caused by constantly pulling, tugging or parting hair in the same direction.

It is also caused from wearing tight hairstyles like braids, ponytails, buns, weaves or cornrows. By applying direct pressure, tension, and strain on the hair follicles, it will eventually cause hair breakage or complete hair loss over an extensive length of time.

What Causes Alopecia?

Alopecia is caused by the immune system attacking the body’s own cells. The white blood cells begin to attack foreign cells also known as invaders.

Symptoms

The common symptoms include severe itching and burning. The hair may begin to fall out in large clumps at a time. This is a very traumatic and emotional experience as one identifies with their physical appearance and can be devastating to their overall self-esteem.

There can also be a continuous cycle of hair loss and regrowth which can cause high levels of stress, frustration, and insecurities. You may also experience depression with emotional highs and lows due to the inconsistencies of the condition.

Alopecia can also affect the fingernails. You may notice the following:

Pinpoint dents
White spots or lines
Rough nails
Thin, splitting, weak fingernails

Test and Diagnosis

You will need to contact your primary doctor and dermatologist for a skin biopsy and blood test. They will also be able to exam your hair strands under a microscope to examine the bulb of the hair.

Due to the nature of the disorder, it is normally easier to diagnosis because of its common characteristics and symptoms.

Common Treatments

Unfortunately, there is no cure to prevent the hair loss from occurring. However, there are several methods of treatments that can be administered.
