Everyone is fascinated by the group of lizards known as Chameleons. Their ability to rapidly change colour and the spectacular way their tongue can shoot out 15cm to catch insect prey means they make spellbinding pets.

Yemen's are the easiest of the group to keep. They grown quickly and are easily encouraged to breed if the owner is so inclined.

They are more suited for observing rather than daily handling.

Insider info: Their rapid colour changes are more about their mood and interaction with other Chameleons than trying to camouflage themselves from the rest of the world.

Waxy Monkey Tree Frogs:
A most unusual frog that comes from hot areas in Argentina and other nearby South American countries. The name is a reflection of how these animals prefer to walk and climb like monkeys rather than hop like most and also how they actually secrete and spread a wax over themselves like a sunscreen to protect from dehydration and sunburn in the hot tropical forests. A gentle amphibian that is certainly a step up from the more frequently kept Whites Tree Frog.

These insects appear very diferent from the familiar form of the common Indian Stick Insect.

Adult Female Jungle Nymph's are the heaviest of all the stick insects and are a beautiful, gorgeous green colour.

The males, by comparison, are a thin weedy animal drab brown in colour, at least he has wings and can fly away to meet new girlfriends whenever he chooses!

A very easy to keep species that are happy in room temperature and eat a variety of Rose, Blackberry, Raspberry and ivy leaves.

Fireworks Season

This can be a very upsetting time for our pets. Responses to the noise of fireworks such as shaking, toileting, salivating can be distressing for themselves to an animal, which can increase the stress of the situation leading to a more severe response next time the noise is heard.

Here at Natural World we recommend Mark & Chappell Serene -UM during the firework period.

Serene -UM assists by controlling or alleviating the underlying emotional state which drives the problem.

How it works - Serene - UM is a natural dietary supplement which contains ingredients required to produce increased amounts of a mood stabilising substance (already present in the body) called Serotonin. Serotonin is produced naturally from nutrients in the diet, these nutrients form the basis of Serene -UM, effectively giving the body the raw ingredients to produce more Serotonin. Caring for your Rabbits this warm weather. Fly Strike can be a huge irritation and particularly nasty condition that can affect Rabbits with damp or dirty fur. the smell of food and bedding together with the warm fur of your Rabbit attracts Flies into Hutches and Runs. Green Bottle Flies lay their eggs in the fur where they hatch into maggots. These maggots then burrow into the skin where they feed and grow, this is known as Fly Strike. Not only does this cause distress and discomfort to the Rabbit, but it can also cause Blood Poisoning which can be fatel. We recommend Beaphar Fly Guard which is a veterinary preparation containing an insect growth regulator which gives protection against Fly Strike for up to 3 months, One bottle is sufficient to treat up to 5 Rabbits. Nematodes (roundworm)

The three main intestinal roundworms are
· Toxocara canis
· Toxocara cati
· Toxocara leonina

Toxocara canis
This worm will only affect dogs. The female lays the eggs, which then pass out in the faeces. The egg has a tough casing in which the larvae develop. The larvae take 10 days to develop in optimal conditions. The larvae can survive in the egg for months or even years. Dogs will then eat the eggs or even a small rodent that has eaten the egg. Depending on the age of the dog the larvae hatch and if it is a puppy the larvae hatch and will migrate to the pups lungs, this will cause the pup to cough who will then swallow the larvae which will then develop into the adult worm. If an adult dog ingest the egg the larvae will migrate through the body and stay dormant. If the egg has been picked up by a rodent the larvae would of already gone through the migration stage so if a dog of any age eats the rodent the worm will go directly to the gut.
When a bitch gets pregnant any dormant larvae will migrate over the placenta and infect the unborn puppy, the worm will then migrate to the pups gut and start to lay eggs. The larvae can also pass through the bitches milk.
Toxocara canis is zoonotic and if children are playing where dogs have messed they can easily pick up worm eggs on there hands. The larvae will migrate through the body and problems including going blind can occur.

Toxocara cati
The cat worm. The lifecycle is similar to canis except that it wont migrate across the placenta to the kitten it can however be passed on through the queens milk.

Toxocara leonine

This can be caught by cat or dog but it can only be transmitted by eating the egg or the paratenic host. It cannot be passed over by the placenta or via the mothers milk

Tapeworm in dogs and Cats

Endoparasites are worms which live within the body. There are several types of worm including Roundworms, Hookworm, Whipworm and Tapeworm. These can be split into two types - Cestodes (Tapeworm) and Nematodes (the roundworms). It is important to know that few wormers will kill both sorts of worms.

Cestodes
The three main cestodes are
· Dipylidium canium
· Taenia sp.
· Echinococcus sp.

Dipylidium canium
This can infest dogs and cats. It must have a flea as its intermediate host and any dog that has a D. canium has had fleas at some stage of its life.The head of the worm is called the scolex which attaches to the intestine by hooks and suckers.It feeds by absorbing food through its skin. The worm forms segments and these segments are independant of each other, that is they have there own reproductive organs.As the segments age others are added and start to grow. These segments (proglottids) detach from the main worm and they will crawl out of the animals anus to the surounding areas of fur and drop off into the environment, the segment will then split open releasing eggs. These eggs are then eaten by flea larvae. The egg hatches inside the flea and when the animal scratches itself, the flea is ingested, the worm larvae then attaches itself to the intestine where it will begin to grow. It should also be noted that humans particularly children can also be infected should they swallow a flea, which seems unlikely but it is suprising what fleas will jump on to, such as food that is dropped onto the floor. It is very likely that an animal with fleas will have been infected with the tapeworm larvae.

Taenia sp
This species is usually found in cats as the intermediate host is small mammals and birds, any cat that hunts is more than likely to be reinfested continually with these worms. Dogs can also pick up the worm if they eat infected meat such as rabbits or sheep. The egg is shed in the faeces of the infected animal which is then picked up by rodents, rabbits,sheep etc. Dogs that are exercised on farmland and hunter cats should be checked regularly and treated monthly if needed. Although this worm presents no threat to cats or dogs they will pass on the infection to cattle and farm stock, which if they are infected renders there meat unsellable and can cause Gid (brain disease) in sheep.

Echinococcus granulosus
This is a rare worm that is usually found in dogs (never cats) in the South West of England and parts of Wales. It is very important as it is zoonotic(can be passed to humans). The eggs are passed out in faeces (can live for long periods without a host) and if those eggs are picked up (contaminated grass for instance)
By animal or human they will hatch and travel around the blood stream, where they will settle in organs such as the liver or brain. Here they will form hydatid cysts which can grow as big as a football.

For at risk animals it is reccomended that they are treated at least every 3 months. Kittens under 12 weeks should not be treated for tapeworm unless it is an approved product prescribed by a vet or SQP (Suitably Qualified Person on site at Natural World)

A Little Bit About Fleas

Fleas

Fleas are wingless but have 6 legs which are well adapted to jumping.

Even on heavily infested animals it can be very difficult to spot a flea so it is best to check this by looking for flea dirt. This can done by combing the dog / cat over a damp tissue. As the flea dirt is made up of dried blood, it soon dissolves and leaves red marks on the tissue.

The cat flea will infest dogs and man where as a dog flea will only normally stay on a dog. The hedgehog flea will infest both cats and dog

The egg of the flea can be laid on the host or in dust or debris. The eggs are not sticky so once they have been laid they will be scatterd all over the environment. Even if a dog is kept in one room you can imagine how far the eggs are scatterd when the dog shakes itself. The egg will hatch over a period of days (usually 2 – 16) into a larvae which look like very tiny maggots, they feed on skin,flea dirt and other organic debris found in carpets, dust etc but more importantly the eggs of the tapeworm. Depending on temperature the larvae will pupate (1 to 2 weeks). The pupal period will last between 2 weeks and several months. They hatch when the time is right for them such as when an animal walks past – vaccuming, vibration and seasonal temperatures can cause them to hatch.

Once hatched the flea will jump onto its target animal where it will live quite happily off the animals blood. It will lay upto 50 eggs per day which are scatterd wherever the animal roams. When the flea bites its target animal, it releases a chemical which prevents the blood from clotting, the flea can then have a feast on the blood. Some animals are alergic to this chemical and can come out in rashes, the spots can then get infected by bacteria. Animals can soon go out of condition when they are infested with fleas, and cats in particular tend to groom a lot more thus resulting in a thinner coat. Fleas carry lots of diseases including myxomatosis of Rabbits. They are also the intermediate host for the tapeworm (this happens when larvae are eating debris out of the carpet and tape worm eggs are ingested)

Control

It is very important that not only the animal is treated but also the environment. Their are various ways of dealing with the problem. We know that once the eggs hatch, the larvae migrate to dark areas where they will pupate, once they are in the pupal stage they become virtually impossible to kill. When dealing with the flea infestation the first thing to do is to vaccum and then wash all of the bedding. It is worth giving the whole room a good vaccum particularly around the edges as this will stimulate any pupae into hatching. Then the edge areas need to be sprayed with an insectacide (houshold flea spray) preferably containing an IGR (insect growth regulator) this will kill any living larvae and any that are missed will ingest the IGR making them usless to mature. Bob Martin produce a liquid wich will stick to any pupae preventing them from hatching. The carpet and bedding can be dusted with a carpet shake n vac product (Rug Patrol) Which is best left down for a couple of hours., before being vaccumed. We then need to treat the animal, there are various spot on treatments which can either kill the flea or break its life cycle. Spot on treatments need to be continuous to mprevent further infestations. It is not unusual to see a flea a couple of days/weeks after the house has been treated as these will be pupae that have been lying waiting to hatch – However as soon as they feed on the cat they will either die or there larvae will not mature (due to the IGR). For immediate results using an IGR you can give the animal a tablet which will kill all the fleas on the animal (these tablets are only effective for 24 hours) and then 24 hours later you can apply the spot on IGR

Most importantly the animal must be treated for Tape Worms after any flea infestation as Fleas are the host for this parasite.

1. Hair Brushing

Most dogs enjoy being brushed, and sessions will strengthen the bond with your dog while maintaining a healthy coat. A dog's minimum brushing needs depend on hair type. Choose the right tools and follow these guidelines.

* Long-haired dogs usually require daily brushing to prevent matting and tangling of hair.
* Medium-haired dogs may be prone to matting and tangles and should be brushed at least weekly.
* Short-haired dogs can typically go up to a month in-between brushing.

Regardless of hair type, you can brush your dog daily - especially if he enjoys it. More frequent brushing during shedding season can help prevent hair build-up and excess shedding. Consider products like the FURminator deShedding tool or the Bamboo Shedding Blade.
