Στο Σούνιο, γύρω από τον ναό του Ποσειδώνα, ζουν ελεύθερες αρκετές πέρδικες. Είχα την τύχη να συνατηθώ με μερικές πριν δυο μέρες που βρέθηκα ξανά εκεί και με χαρά είδα μερικά ζευγάρια να έχουν μεγαλώσει νεαρά πουλιά. Και αυτές, όπως και εμείς αντιμετωπίζουν προβλήματα με την ζέστη. Ευτυχώς, υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που ζουν ή εργάζονται στην περιοχή και φροντίζουν να έχουν νερό και τροφή..!

At Sounion, around the Temple of Poseidon there are some flocks of partridges living free in the area. I was lucky to come across some of them and I saw with pleasure that there are some pairs, raising young chicks. They are facing problems with this heat wave but there are some people living or working in the area who are supplying them with water and food.

A Sounion, attorno al Tempio di Poseidone, ci sono alcuni greggi di partridge che vivono liberamente nella zona. Sono stato fortunato ad incontrare alcuni di loro e ho visto con piacere che ci sono alcune coppie, alzando i giovani pulcini. Hanno fronte a problemi con questa onda di calore ma ci sono alcune persone che vivono o lavorano nella zona che li forniscono con acqua e cibo.

For some years now I am watching this pair of hawks which are nesting on the hills near my village in Crete. They are having problems with the crows living also in the area. And there are conflicts and fierce fights between them. Like this time. I managed to get some photographs of the fightings. It appears that on the first photographs the hawk is carrying food to its nest and the crows are trying to take it away. (Camera Nikon D90, Lens Nikkor 70-300 at 300 mm)

Πολλά χρόνια τώρα παρακολουθώ ένα ζευγάρι γεράκια που φωλιάζει κάθε χρόνο στην απέναντι πλαγιά από το σπίτι στο χωριό. Συνέχεια έχουν προβλήματα με τα κοράκια που ζουν επίσης στην ίδια περιοχή και συχνά έχουμε συγκρούσεις. Όπως και αυτή την φορά που πρόλαβα να τραβήξω μερικές φωτογραφίες. Στις πρώτες φωτογραφίες φαίεται πως η γερακίνα κουβαλάει κάποιο θήραμα στην φωλιά της και τα κοράκια πάνε να της το αρπάξουν. (Φωτ. μηχανή Nikon D90, Φακός Nikkor 70-300 στα 300 χιλ.)

A pleasant and beautiful surprise during my walk around the hills of Athens yesterday. I met this happy family of Eurasian jays (Garrulus glandarius). It appeared to me that someone was looking after them, feeding them..!

Μια ευχάριστη έκπληξη χθες στον Υμηττό. Όπως έκανα την βόλτα μου είδα αυτήν την χαρούμενη οικογένεια με "κίσσες" (Garrulus glandarius) εκεί στο δάσος πάνω από την Καισαριανή. Φαινόταν σαν κάποιος να τις φρόντιζε και να τους έβαζε τροφή.

Between the mountains of Giona and Iti in central Greece, there is a small herd of wild horses, living free on the alpine meadows. During the winter, while their feeding grounds are covered with snow, there are my friends who look after and provide food for them. I met them while I was driving back tgo Athens. This time they had a new member with them.

Ανάμεσα στην Γκιώνα και την Οίτη, ζει ένα μικρό κοπάδι άγρια άλογα, ελεύθερα στα αλπικά λιβάδια. Τον χειμώνα που λιγοατεύει η τροφή, υπάρχουν οι φίλοι που τα φροντίζουν. Τα πέτυχα αργά το απόγευμα χθές, την ώρα της επιστροφής μου στην Αθήνα. Αυτή την φορά είχαν κι ένα καινούριο μέλος στην παρέα.

During my walk on the hills south of Athens yesterday afternoon, I found many of the wild orchids growing there. Unfortunately, there were not many rains this past winter and they have not grown larger.
I thank my friend Stavros Apostolou who has identified and named them:
Ophrys ferrum-equinum, Ophrys tenthredifera, Ophrys fusca.
I suggest to open the photographs to enjoy them in larger size.

Στην βόλτα που έκανα χθες το απόγευμα στον νότιο Υμηττό, βρήκα αρκετές από τις άγριες ορχιδέες που υπάρχουν. Δυστυχώς, οι λιγοστές βροχές το φετεινού χειμώνα δεν επέτρεψαν ν' αναπτυχθούν αρκετά.

Excavations on the pavement at one of the main streets downtown Athens, revealed these ruins in a beautifully preserved condition.

Walking around Peania, Attica, two days ago, included a visit to a beautiful church, which was painted inside by an important Greek artist, Fotis Kontoglou between the years 1939-1942. A visit there, is a must to admire the excellent work.

Η περιήγηση στην περιοχή της Παιανίας, περιελάμβανε και την επίσκεψη στον ναό της Ζωοδόχου πηγής, τον οποίο έχει αγιογραφίσει ο Φώτης Κόντογλου μεταξύ των ετών 1939-1962. Αξίζει να τον επισκεφθεί κανείς και να θαυμάσει την καταπληκτική δουλειά του στο εσωτερικό του ναού.
