This winter is being really harsh on people here. And I do not mean just the weather. One cannot help not to dream about summer and better days. The photographs are from last summer, taken near the little island of Poros, not far from Athens.

Όσο προχωρεί ο βαρύς χειμώνας που περναμε, και δεν εννοώ μόνο τον καιρό, δεν μπορεί κανείς παρά να ονειρεύεται το καλοκαίρι και καλύτερες μέρες. Οι φωτογραφίες είναι τραβηγμένες το καλοκαίρι που πέρασε κάπου εκεί κοντά στον Πόρο.

As I was going through older photographs I had taken, I fell upon these I shot last summer and decided to publish some of them again. They are of a caper plant. It grows around the Mediterranean, the Greek islands in places not easy to reach. And its flower is unique. It is so beautiful. As is its small fruit, which is edible and used in salads or cooked, pickled. It has a unique taste. I caught this specific plant, while it was in full bloom, displaying the beauty of its flowers, to attract the insects. And it had attracted quite a number of critters on it, hosting them on its leaves and sponsoring their activities.

Ψάχνοντας παλιότερες φωτογραφίες που έχω τραβήξει, έπεσα πάνω σ' αυτές που τράβηξα το περασμένο καλοκαίρι, απο ένα φυτό κάπαρης που βρήκα πάνω στον Υμηττό. Όλοι γνωρίζουμε την κάπαρη και την απολαμβάνουμε στις σαλάτες ή στο μαγείρεμα, αλλά λίγοι έχου δει τα όμορφα λουλούδια της. Εδώ πέτυχα το φυτό αυτό, όπως είχε ανοίξει τα λουλούδια του για να προσελκύσει τα έντομα. Και πράγματι φιλοξενούσε αρκετά από αυτά πάνω στα φύλλα του και προστάτευε τις δραστηριότητές τους.

This small waterfall at Syntagma Square in Athens center. When one uses high shutter speed settings like 1/4000 sec, one can catch the water like sculpures, details one cannot see with the eye.

Σ' αυτόν τον μικρό καταρράκτη στην άκρη της πλατείας Συντάγματος. Βάζοντας στην μηχανή υψηλές ταχύτητες για φωτογραφίες, μπορεί να δεί λεπτομέρειες και δημιουργίες του νερού που το μάτι δεν μπορεί να πιάσει.

With the temperatures in Greece below freezing levels the last few days, (some places temperatures recorded were as low as -24C or -11F), one cannot help but dream of summer and the warmth of the sun, the sunny beaches and swimming. I took these photographs after the new year, at the place where I usually go swimming (in summer). The beaches were deserted but there were some windsurfers taking advantage of the slight breeze and the sunshine, and some brave swimmers, who did not mind water temperatures as low as 12C or 53F.

Με τις θερμοκρασίες των τελευταίων ημερών κάτω από το μηδέν, (-24C στην Φλώρινα), δεν μπορεί καναίς να μην αναπολήσει και να ονειρευτεί το καλοκαίρι και το άραγμα στην παραλία. Τράβηξα τις φωτογραφίες αυτές πριν λίγες μέρες, στην Βουλιαγμένη, όπου συνήθως πηγαίνω για μπάνιο. (Το καλοκαίρι). Οι παραλίες ήταν έρημες, εκτός από μερικούς που κάνανε σέρφινγκ, και μερικούς ακόμη πιο γενναίους χειμερινούς κολυμβητές, που δεν τους πείραζε η θερμοκρασία του νερού που ήταν στους 12 βαθμούς.

While walking around in Athens, I passed in front of the presidential residence. I was lucky. At that time the guards, wearing their traditional uniforms, were changing.

Everywhere you dig in Athens center, you will discover the past. These ruins of an ancient building, probably Roman baths, were discovered relatively recently near Athens center, during the excavations for the metro lines.

At one of the main streets of Athens, at a small park, there is the statue of Harry S. Truman (1884-1972). He was the 33rd president of the United States, (1945-1953). When he became president, just as World War II was ending, he had to face many problems regarding domestic the post war economy of the US and rebuilding the destroyed by the war Europe.
For us, Greeks, he was important, as it was his policy, known as the Truman Doctrine. It was a plan to help Greece and Turkey, with economic and military aid, so these two countries would not fall into the Soviet Sphere of influence. Some historians consider this policy as the beginning of the Cold War.
While the military junta was governing Greece from 1967 to 1974, his statue was the target of bomb attacks by Greek anti-junta groups, as it was considered as a symbol of the US, and their continuing support to the junta.

Σε κεντρικό δρόμο της Αθήνας, βρίσκεται το άγαλμα το Χάρρυ Τρούμαν (1884-1972). Υπήρξε ο 33ος πρ΄΄οεδρος των Η.Π. Αμερικής (1945-1953). Έγινε πρόεδρος σε μια δύσκολη περίοδο, την εποχή του τερματισμού του δευτέρου παγκοσμίου πολέμου.
Για μας τους Έλληνες υπήρξε αποφασιστικός ο ρόλος του και η πολιτική του, σύμφωνα με το περίφημο Δόγμα Τρούμαν, με το οποίο βοήθησε την Ελλάδα και την Τουρκία με οικονομική και στρατιωτική βοήθεια, για να μην περάσουν στην επιροή της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης.
Κατά την διάρκεια της 7χρονης στρατιωτικής δικτατορίας, το άγαλμά του έγινε αρκετές φορές στόχος βομβιστικών επιθέσεων από αντιστασιακές οργανώσεις, επειδή εθεωρείτο σαν σύμβολο της αμερικανικής υποστήριξης στην χούντα.

Once, there were many living on the mountains of Crete. Now there are only few remaining under protection at Samaria National Park. The wild goat of Crete or Kri-Kri (Capra Aegagrus Cretica) is an endangered species. It is a beautiful animal and not easy to see and photograph in the wild as they usually live in not easy to reach places and are very shy. I took these photographs of the few kept in captivity at a small park at the town of Chania.

Κάποτε ζούσαν πολλά αγρίμια ή Κρι-Κρι στα βουνά της Κρήτης. Τώρα είναι είδος υπό εξαφάνιση και μόνο λίγα ζούνε προστατευμένα στο Εθνικό Πάρκο της Σαμαριάς, στα νότια του νομού Χανίων. Ο Κρητικός Αίγαγρος (Carpa Aegagrus Cretica) είναι δύσκολο να φωτογραφηθεί εκεί που ζεις στους απρόσιτους γκρεμούς στην άγρια φύση. Αυτές τις φωτογραφίες τις τράβηξα στον Δημοτικό κήπο των Χανίων.

Although it is winter, you can still find some blooms at the fields in Crete. Like blackberries, the carob tree, wild bushes or daisies.

The white of the cloud formations, the blue of the skies or the sea when the clouds are broken, the moon high above, or a distant shoreline or a rocky island is all you see when flying high. And all those make you dream and think how beautiful and clean the world appears to be when seen from above, with all man made ugliness hidden from our eyes. Exactly like the singer is saying at the bottom of the post.

Το λευκό των νεφών, το μπλέ τ' ουρανού και της θάλασσας όπου τα σύννεφα σπάνε και μας αφίνουν να τη δούμε, το φεγγάρι πιο ψηλά, κάποια μακρινή ακτογραμμή ή κανένα από τα βραχονησιά μας είναι ότι μπορούμε να δούμε όταν ταξιδεύουμε ψηλά. Μπορούμε όμως να ονειρευτούμε, να σκεφτούμε πόσο όμορφος και καθαρός είναι ο κόσμος όταν τον παρατηρούμε από ψηλά, με όλη την ασχημια που έχει δημιουργήσει ο άνθρωπος κρυμμένη από τα μάτια μας. Ακριβώς όπως μας τραγουδάει ο Κώστας Χατζής στο τέλος της ανάρτησης.

From the coastal town of Chania, to the small village of Tzitzifes, at the roots of the White Mountains of western Crete. The mountains were not white at the time, only some snow at the tops, but I think they are now, as more snow has fallen since the time I took these photographs, one week before Christmas.

Από τα Χανιά, στον Τζιτζιφέ, στις ρίζες των Λευκών Ορέων. Δεν ήταν βέβαια και πολύ λευκά τις μέρες που τράβηξα τις φωτογραφίες, μια βδομάδα πριν τα Χριστούγεννα, αλλά τώρα πρέπει νάναι, αφού χιόνισε ξανά τις τελευταίες μέρες.

The town of Chania in western Crete. At the center of the photograph you can see the old port, the lighthouse and part of the walls protecting the older section of the town. Every time I go there, I like to walk the narrow stone paved streets of the old town and then have my coffee at one of the cafes around the old port.

Κάθε φορά που βρίσκομαι στην Κρήτη, μ' αρέσει να περπατώ στα στνά δρομάκια της παλιάς πόλης των Χανίων και να πίνω τον καφέ μου στο παλιό Βενετσιάνικο λιμάνι.
