What is Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES)?
Ammonium Laureth Sulfate is the ammonium salt of sulfated ethoxylated lauryl alcohol. It can be derived from coconut. ALES acts as a surfactant (a foaming and cleansing agent) that poses serious health threats. This ingredient is found in car washes, garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and 90 percent of personal-care products that foam – it’s in most of the cosmetic products we use each day! It has similar properties to Ammonium Laury

Cocamide is a chemically-modified form of coconut oil. It forms the structural basis of many surfactants, which act as detergents, emulsifiers and foaming or thickening agents. It is found in many chemicals such as DEA, DEA-CETYL phosphates, DEA OLETH-3 phosphates, Myristamide DEA, Stearamide MEA, Cocamide MEA, Lauramide MEA, Oleamide DEA, and TEA-Lauryl Sulfate. These ingredients can be found in the majority of body care products, including shampoo, hand soap, makeup and facial cleansers to give them a better consistency.

Local food has no strict definition - it can refer to food grown at home, in your community, your region or your country. Most people who strive to eat locally purchased foods that are produced as close to home as possible. By eating local food, you are supporting agriculture in your community. Buying local also supports a more sustainable food system. Less processing, packaging, energy use and transportation is required to put local foods on your plate compared to foods that are imported from other countries.
