Hello, Everyone! It's the Fall season in the USA, again. Our weather temperatures are cooling off and many are preparing to ward off 'colds' or to alleviate the symptoms of an existing 'cold'. In my effort to contribute to those preparations, today, I am sharing my grandmother Eunice's ingredients for a tea that causes phlegm to be released out of the body. Whenever we had colds as children, she'd make this concoction for us; it was always delicious and effective! I've used it as an adult, time and again, and it never fails me. By the way, "Phlegm is a liquid secreted by the mucous membranes of mammals. Its definition is limited to the mucus produced by the respiratory system, excluding that from the nasal passages, and particularly that which is expelled by coughing (sputum). Phlegm is in essence a water-based gel consisting of glyco-proteins, immunoglobulins, lipids and other substances." ~ Wikipedia

Grandmother Eunice's 'Anti-Phlegm Tea' recipe is:

water,

one or two slices of fresh lemon,

red & white peppermints (which contains real peppermint oil)

honey (not imitation/faux honey)

I've always prepared this tea as one serving, since I've make it for myself. So, to make a one-cup serving do the following:

Choose a clean tea cup/coffee cup, preferably one that delights you

Heat enough clean water to fill your tea/coffee cup

Rinse, clean, one lemon. Cut one or two lemon slices and add the slice(s) to your empty cup

Add two (tea cup) to three (coffee cup) peppermints to your cup (circle-shaped peppermints work well)

Add one to three tablespoons of honey on top of the lemon and peppermint (I've been using Don Victor Orange Blossom Comb Honey Globe Jar, 16 Ounce* for quite some time; it's always delicious).

Pour enough of the heated water into your tea/coffee cup to cover the lemon-peppermint-honey trio completely

Let the heated water 'work-on' the lemon-peppermint-honey trio, for approximately three minutes

Stir the trio around in the cup with a clean metal spoon, to blend the trio even more

Pour more heated water into your cup to fill it

Sip your delicious tea as the temperature becomes comfortably sippable

After you've finished the entire cup of tea, you'll notice that your body will begin to release the phlegm over time. During the course of my day or evening after I have finished drinking this 'Anti-Phlegm' tea, I can feel a release of phlegm into my throat. That's when I spit it out in the bathroom, or use a paper napkin/paper towel to spit the phlegm into and throw it in the trash.

If you'd like to, you can make this tea again, and have it the next day. However, one cup of Grandmother Eunice's delicious 'Anti-Phlegm' Tea always cleared out the phlegm for me! One more tip, real Peppermint Essential Oil (PEO) may be used with or instead of the peppermints. I haven't used real PEO for this tea, yet. However, I have used real PEO for other purposes and it is a delightful essential oil*!

* are Amazon & Mountain Rose Herbs affiliate links

Here are a few of the great ingredients listed on the label of the jar I have:
Hello, Everyone!

Wow! The past nine months have been super-busy for me! Among my usual tasks, I've been working at my sister's art business and 'wearing many hats' there. Among the 'hats I wore'/tasks I performed there, was teaching children and adults to paint on canvas and/or bisque pottery! I, blogged for her business and, also, edited and updated her WordPress website, too! I enjoyed my time there and learned quite a bit about WordPress, various tech. devices for business, and operating that type of business. So, that's some of what I've been doing while away from this blog.

Also, over the past few months, I've began using Shea Moisture hair care products on my hair. In today's post I will briefly discuss my experience with the first product of four products that I've already used of that line/brand, numerous times. The first Shea Moisture product that I tried, and used regularly, is the Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner with Sea Kelp and Argon Oil. I chose to purchase this product after visiting their website (where I discovered how long they've been in business) and because of the ingredients in this product. In addition to the ingredients, I enjoy and appreciate:

the aroma of this restorative conditioner

the design of the bottle w/ the pump

the deep-conditioning effect it has on my hair

the superb, quick-acting detangling effect it has on my hair

I feel fortunate that I discovered this product last year, because my 18" strands had

Hello, Everyone! Growing my own food has become a prominent goal for me as I continue to learn and hear about the vastly degraded quality of food in the USA, due to the way it is produced, handled, modified and otherwise altered from the form, content and quality Creator created it to be. Consequently, I like to learn from people that are already succeeding as farmers. My maternal and paternal grandparents farmed, however they aren't alive for me to learn from anymore. So, now, I am learning via other farmers' websites, blogs, videos, other media and content. The video, below, is one I discovered on Thursday, of this week. This video, about the Chase Farm, is one of eight in the Meet Your Farmer
Hello, Everyone!
Almonds are one of my favorite nuts (seeds) and one of the healthiest of seeds in existence. Today, I refreshed my knowledge of details about the almond. The following are a few of the highlights that I read about this wonderful food, today.

Almonds are actually seeds of the almond tree's fruit.

The almond fruit tree is 'related' to the apricot tree, peach tree and cherry tree with their pit-like seeds.

Almonds are, either:

sweet almonds (prunus amygdalu var. dulcis), or

Hello, Everyone! The avocado is such a nutritious food, I am highlighting its benefits again!

Health Benefits of Avocado
When it comes to nutrition, avocados are in a class by themselves because of the unusually large number of benefits they offer - more than 20, last count. Loaded with fiber, one avocado contains 36% of the daily requirement of vitamin K, 30% of the folate, and 20% each of the daily requirements of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5, needed to break down carbohydrates), vitamin B6, vitamin C, and potassium - more than twice the potassium of a banana. Vitamin E, niacin, and riboflavin levels deserve honorable mention. Eaten with other foods, your body is better able to absorb the nutrients, such as alpha- and beta-carotene and lutein.

Avocado is one of the few fruits that will provide you with "good" fats. That means it can help keep your cholesterol levels already in the healthy range, and help lower your risk for heart disease. Avocados are one of the best fruits for your health. See: The Best and Worst Vegetables to Eat

Studies Done on Avocado
Loosely described, lipids, their derivatives, and related substances are fatty acids. Scientists discovered only 40 years ago or so that they're not just simple building blocks, but perform complex, cell-regulating tasks on a molecular level, like messaging hormones, for example.

One study was undertaken to see if avocados might have more lipids than other fruits and vegetables, which, while rich in carotenoids, are lipid challenged, impeding nutrient absorption. Researchers found that adding

avocados to salad and salsa (foods used in the study) can significantly enhance your body's ability to take up the benefits of carotenoids, due primarily to the lipids in the avocados1.

The yellow-green color of avocados prompted another study, since color in other plant-based foods indicates carotenoid and other "bioactive" action, indicating possible cancer-fighting properties. The premise was that the monounsaturated fat in avocados might help your body absorb important bioactive carotenoids in combination with other fruits and vegetables, and therefore significantly reduce your risk of cancer2.

Another study showed that the lipids extracted from avocados might prove photo-protective against harmful effects of radiation, such as sun damage, inflammation, and even skin cancer, if ingested before exposure3.

Hello, Everyone!

Today, we are looking at the avocado and some of its benefits to the body, and therefore, the scalp's hair. The avocado tree (Persea americana) is native to Central Mexico, and is classified in the flowering plant family Lauraceae along with cinnamon, camphor and bay laurel. 'Avocado' or 'alligator pear' also refers to the fruit (botanically, a large drupe that contains a large seed) of the tree, which may be pear-shaped, egg-shaped or spherical.

Avocados are commercially valuable, and are cultivated in tropical and mediterranean climates throughout the world, producing a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting. Trees are partially self-pollinating and often are propagated through grafting to maintain a predictable quality and quantity of the fruit.

Culinary Uses
The avocado fruit of horticultural cultivars has a higher fat content than most other fruit, mostly monounsaturated fat, and, consequently, serves as an important staple in the diet of various groups where access to other fatty foods such as high-fat meats and fish, dairy, etc. is limited.

When held in the palm of the hand and squeezed, a ripe avocado yields to gentle pressure. The flesh is prone to enzymatic browning which means it turns brown quickly after exposure to air. To prevent this, lime or lemon juice can be added to avocados after they are peeled.

Indonesian-style avocado
milkshake with chocolate
syrup

Avocado fruit is not sweet, but savory, yet subtly flavored with a smooth, almost creamy texture. However, It is used in savory dishes and sweet dishes, in many countries yet not for both. The avocado is very popular in vegetarian cuisine, as substitute for meats in sandwiches and salads because of its high fat content.

Generally, avocado is served raw, although some cultivars, including the common Hass, can be cooked for a short time without becoming bitter. Caution should be used when cooking with untested cultivars because the flesh of some avocados may be rendered inedible by heat. Prolonged cooking induces this chemical reaction in all cultivars.

Around the globe avocado culinary use as a dessert is:

Facts About the Apple

The apple is the pomaceous fruit of the apple tree, species Malus domestica in the rose family (Rosaceae). It is one of the most widely cultivated fruit trees, and the most widely known of the many members of genus Malus that are used by
humans.

The tree originated in Western Asia, where its wild ancestor, the Alma, is still found today. There are more than 7,500 known cultivars of apples, resulting in a range of desired characteristics. Cultivars vary in their yield and the ultimate size of the tree, even when grown on the same rootstock.

Apples are often eaten raw without consuming the seeds, which are slightly poisonous (see below), the whole fruit including the skin is suitable for human consumption. Varieties bred for this purpose are termed dessert or table apples.

Apples can be canned or juiced. They are milled to produce apple cider (non-alcoholic, sweet cider) and filtered for apple juice. The juice can be fermented to make cider (
alcoholic, hard cider), ciderkin, and vinegar. Through distillation, various alcoholic beverages can be produced, such as applejack, Calvados, and apfelwein. Pectin and apple seed oil may also be produced.

Sliced apples turn brown due to the conversion of natural phenolic substances into melanin, upon exposure to oxygen. Different cultivars vary in their propensity to brown after slicing. Sliced fruit can be treated with acidulated water to prevent this effect if it isn't going to be eaten immediately after slicing.

Organic apples are the better choice, as compared to non-organic apples, since non-organic apples have a significantly high level of pesticide residue on them.

Eating fallen apples, rather than eating apples picked directly from the tree, may put the eater at the risk of food poisoning if the apple orchard is also the area for keeping cattle or other animals. This is true due to the fact that fallen apples may become contaminated with animals' fec

es. Furthermore, the risk may be significantly higher if the fallen apples are used to make home-made unpasteurized, unfermented cider or juice
, thus letting E. coli multiply.

A ripe, raw apple digests in eighty-five minutes.

The cultivated apple tree is at its prime when it is, approximately, fifty years old

The cultivated apple tree will bear fruit for more than one hundred years

Hello, Everyone! I've just discovered the Heritage Seed Company and I appreciate their mission to bring back and restore to use, lost foods, while teaching interested gardeners the value of fresh, heirloom and local produce. They desire to encourage and support more people to plant organic gardens and to save and trade seeds. To achieve these goals they'll utilize modern technology with social media. For example, they will provide online education via pre-recorded video, instant chat, and live video streaming.

Heritage Seed Company will have a comprehensive resource center to help all growers. The website that they are planning will be free to use and be built with open-source tools so other people can utilize the site and the code. The vision and goal for the website is that it will serve as an educational resource, a communication tool, a digital meeting place and the home of a mapping system that tracks progress of Heritage Seed propagation.
How to Make Herbal Tooth Powder

Hello, Everyone! The following video features a recipe for tooth powder which can be used instead of toothpaste for brushing your teeth. John Gallagher of LearningHerbs.com and Mt. Rose Herbs is sharing the recipe, which is from Heather Nic an Fhleisdeir of the Academy of Scottish Herbalism, with us.

The quick and easy recipe includes sea salt, kaolin clay, baking soda, spearmint essential oil and dried sage. I've used each one of these ingredients individually, except the kaolin clay. I am looking forward to trying these ingredients together, according to this recipe.

Gallagher shares tips with us as he prepares the tooth powder. Among the interesting tips he shares are: (1) kaolin clay is used in the tooth polish dentists use and (2) sage helps whiten teeth! I didn't know that about sage. I love the flavor of sage, especially in chicken dishes.

As we get our hair in great condition and our bodies toned, we might as well pamper our teeth and gums, too!

Today's post is a guest feature from, Theresa Stevens, an art teacher who became an Inspirational Dance Teacher and Founder of Lovelight Samba. She will share how women can lose weight by dancing. As you all know, Spring will be upon us soon enough, and we might as well get ready for it, now, by toning away the excess remnant pounds from the various holiday feasts we enjoyed so much in November, December and New Year's Eve/Day, too. Since we need to get rid of the excess pounds for greater overall body health anyway (the increased blood circulation is great for our hair's health and growth, too), we might as well do it in a way that we really enjoy. Why? Because we are far more likely to make something we really enjoy doing, a regular part of our lives and consequently, reap long-term, lasting, beneficial results. Theresa will share more about how to experience joy while losing those excess pounds, below. Enjoy!

Weight-Loss and Stress–and the power of getting into Pleasure!
by Theresa Stevens

Have you found a correlation in your life between feeling stressed out and gaining weight?

When you’re stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol which slows down your metabolism, causing you to gain weight. And when you are stressed, this same hormone triggers you to reach for fattier, saltier and sweeter foods.

Chocolate is comforting in the first few bites, but emotional eating to comfort stress can lead to adding on extra pounds, which is not comforting and only adds to the stress in your life.

What’s a girl to do? There is one sure-fire remedy for stress, and that’s PLEASURE. And by it’s

Theresa Stevens - 'After'

very definition, it means feeling good.

When you are in PLEASURE, or what I like to call Body Joy, you release neurotransmitters called endorphins― and your body feels light and beautiful, happy and free, and naturally high! Endorphins are those natural body messengers that make you feel SO GOOD after taking a brisk walk, or dancing in the living room, or running down the beach with a dog or child. Endorphins are your body’s natural reward system for taking the actions that are the most healthy and truly comforting for you.

You have to understand that getting into PLEASURE is essential in your ability to lose weight.

You know, in our cultural learning of the best ways to lose weight–we are usually trained that we need to suffer to do it. Things like working out and dieting are very hard to maintain because of the energy of depriving yourself, of not following your body’s natural design of feeling good to lose weight.

Hello, Everyone! In this video Lauren Farraher, Hair Stylist, discusses how to straighten hair with milk. Farraher has been styling all types of hair for more than nine years. She has experience in cutting, styling and coloring men's, women's and children's hair. Farraher attended a hair and beauty school in New York and currently provides her services, as a hair stylist, at Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance, Inc., in Wilmington, N.C.

Why milk? Milk is very nourishing to hair and it can help increase shine and luster, while reducing frizz. In order to straighten hair with milk, use it while hair is dry or slightly damp. In the video, Farraher uses milk on slightly damp hair. To do the same you should cleanse your hair as usual, however do not condition it, yet. Next, you may spray milk on to your hair from a spray bottle, or you may use an application brush and a wide tooth comb to apply the milk to your hair. Be sure to apply the milk from the roots all the way down your hair shaft. Focus on applying it thoroughly and saturate the ends. Once you have applied the milk to your hair, gently massage it into your scalp for a little while. Massaging your scalp helps increase blood circulation which increases the flow of nutrients to your scalp. After massaging your scalp let the milk remain on your hair for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. After this time has passed, rinse your hair thoroughly, and condition as usual. ~ based on Farraher video tips

"If you'd like you can actually spray just a little more milk in your hair before styling, however you do not want to use as much. You are going to want to use probably about a third cup of milk for the initial saturation. What it is going to do is to kind of help relax your hair and weigh a little heavy on your hair which will pull down some of your wave. If your hair is very kinky-curly it won't work as well, however it will help you actually hydrate your hair and give you a little bit more definition within your curl. It will not necessarily give you very straight hair." ~ Lauren Farraher
Hello, Everyone! Today's recipe video is one I learned about from fellow Tweeter @tastegoodfood a.k.a Donald Chase (an @DelynsBliss Tweeter) at his site, Chicken Recipes. This video, created by Kraft Foods, features a 'Chicken Parmesan Bundles' recipe. Their Chef Julie demonstrates several quick and easy tips that make preparing this chicken recipe, easy.

The combination of ingredients for this recipe are some of my favorite foods - chicken, spinach, cheese, crackers and spaghetti/pasta sauce! I particularly enjoy the combination of chicken and spinach, together.

Now, with so many organically-produced versions of these foods available, it easy to make the substitutions, right down to the crackers. Whenever I make these substitutions the flavors are more delicious (because the quality of the foods are so much better) and I feel better (because more of the foods' nutrients have been retained due to the way they were produced and handled)!
Hazelnut Pumpkin Deep-dish Pie

Hello, Everyone! Today's post features a recipe for 'Hazelnut Pumpkin Deep-dish Pie' by Food Network's Sunny Anderson. I think it's a great holiday dessert choice.

Hazelnuts, pumpkin pie and cheesecake are among my vast list of favorite foods! I've never tasted a pumpkin pie containing cheesecake and hazelnut flavors. So, Sunny Anderson's recipe combining these flavors has peaked my interest. The pie she's prepared looks so delicious (and it's pretty)!

As I've mentioned, hazelnuts are one of my favorites. If you've ever eaten a fresh/raw hazelnut that you cracked open the shell of yourself, you know precisely how delicious that nut is. I have, and this is why I'll make substitutions for the hazelnut creamer with one of the three choices I've mentioned below. I want as much of that delicious hazelnut flavor as I can get, along with the nutritional benefits of the hazelnut, in the pie. Since I love to incorporate fresh, organically-produced ingredients into my meals, desserts and snacks as much as I possibly can, I will:

use organic, finely ground hazelnuts as a substitute for the hazelnut creamer

OR use an organic, food-grade hazelnut essential oil as a substitute for the hazelnut creamer

OR use a bit of hazelnut butter (similar to peanut butter rather than dairy/cow milk butter) in the pumpkin puree and cream cheese mixture, as a substitute for the hazelnut creamer

and I'll make fresh, and organic substitutions for the other ingredients, as possible. Also, enjoying hazelnuts as much as I do, I'll add chopped pieces of hazelnuts as a topping for the pie. For me, with these substitutions the pie becomes an even healthier version of this delicious recipe.

Here's a link to an interesting site featuring a Butternut Squash farmer's results, How to Grow Butternut Squash - In Pictures, that I discovered while searching for information about Butternut Squash. As I type the word 'squash' repeatedly, for this post, I acknowledge to myself that the name 'squash' sounds funny, yet the vegetable truly is delicious!

I love muffins, apples & onions (especially scallions & Vidalia® onions)! I think combining the savory flavor of either scallions or the savory-sweet flavor of Vidalia®s, with the sweet flavor of a red apple in my savory, home-made (not pre-made/packaged) stuffing will be so delicious! Knowing how delicious stuffing, apples and onions are separately, I can just imagine the delight my tastebuds will experience as I eat them as muffins! It's time to 'get baking'!
Today's recipe is Pomegranate Glazed Chicken. The video features a cooking segment on WXIA 11 by 'A Legendary Event' with Tony Conway and Christoph Holmes, Executive Chef. The chicken that Executive Chef Holmes chose to use for his Pomegranate Glazed Chicken recipe is Springer Mountain Farms chicken.

Springer Mountain Farms is a family-owned business that has been raising chickens for over 40 years. They are located in the hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia (USA). They continue to provide the very best and most nutritious chicken possible; this is why their chicken is different from any other. Their chickens do NOT receive Antibiotics, Chemical Medicines, Growth Stimulants NOR Hormones, and are NEVER fed Animal By-products. Their chickens only receive an All-Vegetable Diet plus natural vitamins and minerals with fresh, mountain water. ~ Springer Mtn. Farms
Hello, Everyone! The holidays are quickly approaching and you may already be thinking of healthy foods to serve at your feasts. One delightful food you can serve as a part of your dessert selection is Beta Carotene Poppers (BCP). BCPs are made with the carrot pulp that remains after juicing carrots.

In the video below, RawBeets.com's Lisa Paris, creator of the BCPs, demonstrates her recipe with assistance from Jason Cairns, of OrganicJar.com. As you'll see this recipe is quick and easy to prepare. If you use as many organically-produced ingredients as is possible now, you'll have a very delicious & nutritious dessert! I love coconut so much that adding more to the topping mixture, for full-coverage, is a given for me. Enjoy this dessert. More great recipes coming in the days ahead!
