Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of year in southeastern Pennsylvania. Trees turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, ornamental grasses catch the afternoon sunlight, and familiar gardens take on an entirely new appearance.

But have you ever wondered why leaves change color in the fall? Or how you can bring more of that seasonal beauty into your own landscape?

The answer lies in a combination of plant biology, changing weather, and thoughtful landscape design. Fall is also a wonderful reminder of everything plants do for us throughout the year, from supporting pollinators and wildlife to improving our outdoor spaces.

At Naturescapes, we believe a beautiful landscape should offer something to appreciate in every season. Here is a closer look at the science behind fall color and how to create an outdoor space that continues to shine as the growing season winds down.

Why Do Leaves Change Color in the Fall?

During spring and summer, most deciduous trees and shrubs produce chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for their green leaves. Chlorophyll allows plants to capture sunlight and use that energy to produce sugars through photosynthesis.

As autumn approaches, days become shorter and nights become longer. These changes signal that the growing season is ending. Trees begin breaking down chlorophyll and recovering nutrients from their leaves before winter dormancy.

As the green pigment fades, other colors become visible. Depending on the plant species, those colors may include brilliant yellows, warm oranges, deep reds, and purples.

Eventually, a separation layer forms at the base of each leaf stem, allowing the leaf to fall. This process helps many deciduous trees conserve resources and prepare for winter.

In other words, the spectacular colors we enjoy each autumn are part of a natural seasonal transition that helps plants prepare for the months ahead.

What Causes Red, Orange, and Yellow Fall Leaves?

Have you ever noticed that one tree turns bright red while another nearby becomes golden yellow? Different plant pigments are responsible for these colors.

Yellow and orange leaves

Carotenoids are pigments that are present in leaves throughout the growing season. During summer, chlorophyll masks their yellow and orange colors. As chlorophyll breaks down in autumn, these warmer tones become visible.

Red and purple leaves

Anthocyanins produce many of the red, crimson, and purple colors associated with fall foliage. Unlike carotenoids, these pigments are often produced in leaves during autumn. Bright sunlight and sugars remaining in the leaves can help encourage their development.

Brown and bronze leaves

Some trees, including many oaks, develop attractive russet, bronze, and brown tones as their leaves age. These colors contribute their own richness to the autumn landscape.

Every tree species has its own characteristic color palette. This natural variety is one reason a landscape with several different kinds of trees and shrubs can be so visually interesting in the fall.

How Weather Affects Fall Foliage

Although shorter days help trigger the seasonal transition, weather plays an important role in determining how vibrant fall foliage becomes.

A healthy growing season with adequate moisture, followed by sunny autumn days and cool nights, often creates favorable conditions for brilliant fall color.

However, every year is different.

Sunlight: Bright days can encourage the production of red-producing anthocyanins in some plants.

Cool nights: Cool, but not severely damaging, temperatures can favor the development of vivid red and purple hues.

Summer rainfall: Adequate moisture helps trees maintain healthy foliage throughout the growing season.

Drought: Severe water stress can cause leaves to turn brown, change color prematurely, or fall earlier than usual.

Early frost and strong winds: These conditions can damage foliage and shorten the period when fall colors are visible.

This is why autumn does not look exactly the same every year. Even in a less colorful season, different species can provide a beautiful mix of foliage, berries, ornamental grasses, and interesting plant forms.

Which Trees and Shrubs Have the Best Fall Color in Pennsylvania?

If you want to enjoy more autumn color at home, consider the trees and shrubs already growing in your yard as well as those you might add to your landscape.

Here are several plants worth discussing with a landscape professional when planning a garden in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Red Maple

Red maples are known for their brilliant red and scarlet foliage. Their autumn color can make them a striking focal point in a residential landscape when planted where their mature size and growing requirements can be accommodated.

Sugar Maple

Sugar maples are celebrated for their yellow, orange, and red autumn colors. They can provide a dramatic seasonal display and are particularly attractive in landscapes with room for a substantial shade tree.

Sweetgum

Sweetgum trees can produce a mixture of yellow, orange, red, and purple foliage. Their varied colors make them an interesting option for homeowners seeking a diverse autumn palette.

Serviceberry

Serviceberry offers more than spring flowers and seasonal fruit. Many varieties also develop attractive orange-red fall foliage, making this a versatile choice for residential landscapes.

Oakleaf Hydrangea

For homeowners who want autumn interest without relying exclusively on large trees, oakleaf hydrangea is an excellent shrub to consider. Its foliage can develop red, burgundy, and purple tones, while its distinctive flower heads and branching structure provide additional seasonal interest.

Fothergilla

Fothergilla is a deciduous shrub known for its attractive spring flowers and colorful autumn foliage. Depending on the variety and growing conditions, leaves may display shades of yellow, orange, and red.

When selecting plants, remember that fall color varies with the species, cultivar, sunlight, soil conditions, and weather. A plant that thrives in one location may perform differently in another. Choosing plants suited to your property’s conditions is just as important as choosing them for their color.

How to Design a Landscape for Fall Color

A landscape that looks beautiful in autumn does not happen by accident. The most successful designs consider how trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses will look throughout the year, not just when they are flowering.

Here are a few ways to incorporate more seasonal color into your property.

Layer trees and shrubs.

Mix foliage colors and textures.

Include ornamental grasses

Consider berries and seed heads.

Plan for the entire year.

Incorporate ornamental grasses.

A thoughtful planting plan can make even a relatively small yard feel more dynamic, with something new to notice as the seasons change.

Beyond Leaves: Plants That Add Autumn Interest

Fall color is not limited to red and gold leaves. Some of the most interesting autumn landscapes combine foliage with flowers, ornamental grasses, berries, bark, and evergreen structure. Whether you’re planting colorful flower beds, adding shrubs, or refreshing your landscape, small decisions can have a big impact on the health and appearance of your yard.

Many gardening problems can be prevented before they start. By understanding what your plants need and giving them proper care throughout the growing season, you’ll enjoy healthier plants, fewer pests, and a landscape that looks beautiful year after year.

Choose the Right Plants and Give Them the Right Start

1. Plant for Your Growing Conditions

One of the most common gardening mistakes is choosing plants based only on their appearance. While it’s easy to fall in love with a flower at the garden center, every plant has different needs for sunlight, soil, and moisture.

Before planting, pay attention to how much sun each area of your yard receives throughout the day. Some plants thrive in full sun, while others perform best in partial shade or full shade. Matching plants to the conditions they prefer will greatly improve their long-term success.

2. Avoid Overcrowding

New plants often look small when they’re first installed, making it tempting to plant them close together. However, most shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses grow much larger over time.

Leaving adequate space allows for better airflow, reduces the risk of fungal diseases, and helps each plant develop into its natural shape without competing for nutrients and water.

3. Improve Your Soil Before Planting

Healthy soil is the foundation of every successful garden. Adding compost or other organic matter improves drainage, encourages healthy root growth, and provides nutrients that plants need throughout the season.

Taking the time to prepare your soil before planting often results in stronger, healthier plants with fewer maintenance issues later.

Maintain Your Garden for Long-Term Success

4. Water Consistently

Both overwatering and underwatering can damage plants. Instead of watering lightly every day, aim for deep watering that encourages roots to grow farther into the soil.

Watering early in the morning is generally the best practice because it allows moisture to soak into the ground while giving leaves time to dry, helping reduce the risk of disease.

5. Don’t Skip Mulch

Mulch does far more than improve the appearance of your landscape beds. A two- to three-inch layer helps retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed growth throughout the season.

Be careful not to pile mulch directly against tree trunks or the base of plants, as this can trap excess moisture and contribute to rot.

6. Stay Ahead of Weeds and Pests

Small problems are much easier to manage than large ones. Pull weeds while they’re young, inspect plants regularly for signs of insects or disease, and remove damaged foliage when necessary.

Routine maintenance throughout the growing season can prevent bigger issues and keep your landscape looking its best.

Give Your Garden Regular Attention

Even low-maintenance landscapes benefit from occasional care. Deadheading spent flowers, trimming overgrown plants, edging landscape beds, and refreshing mulch all help create a cleaner, healthier outdoor space.

A few minutes of maintenance each week often saves hours of work later in the season.

Ready to Create a Healthier, More Beautiful Landscape?

Beautiful gardens don’t happen by accident. They’re the result of thoughtful planning and consistent care. If you’re ready to enhance your outdoor space or would like help creating a landscape that’s both beautiful and easy to maintain, the experienced team at Naturescapes is here to help. Two of the most popular options homeowners consider are bluestone and flagstone. While the names are often used interchangeably, there are important differences between the two that can affect the appearance, durability, maintenance, and overall feel of your outdoor space.

Choosing the right stone is about more than color alone; it’s about finding the material that best fits your home’s style, climate, budget, and how the space will actually be used.

What Is the Difference Between Bluestone and Flagstone?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that bluestone and flagstone are completely separate materials. In reality, bluestone is technically a type of flagstone.

Flagstone is a broad term used to describe flat natural stones commonly used in hardscaping and landscaping applications. These stones can include sandstone, limestone, slate, quartzite, and bluestone itself.

Bluestone, on the other hand, refers specifically to a dense blue-gray sandstone primarily quarried in the northeastern United States. It has become especially popular for patios, walkways, pool decks, and modern outdoor living spaces because of its durability and clean appearance.

Appearance & Style Differences

One of the biggest deciding factors for homeowners is usually the overall look of the stone.

Bluestone typically offers:

Blue-gray or cool earth-tone coloring

More uniform cuts and cleaner lines

A modern or formal appearance

A sleek, architectural aesthetic

Flagstone generally provides:

Wider color variation including browns, golds, reds, grays, and mixed earth tones

More irregular and organic shapes

A rustic, natural appearance

Better blending with gardens and natural landscapes

Bluestone tends to stand out more as a design feature, while traditional flagstone often blends naturally into the surrounding landscape.

Durability & Weather Resistance

Both materials perform well outdoors, but there are some important differences in strength and weather resistance.

Bluestone is generally considered the denser and more durable option. It holds up especially well in high-traffic areas and harsh freeze-thaw climates, making it a popular choice in northern regions.

Flagstone durability can vary depending on the specific type of stone used. Some flagstones are extremely durable, while softer varieties may be more prone to flaking or wear over time.

When comparing the two, homeowners often choose:

Bluestone For:

Pool decks

Modern patios

High-traffic walkways

Contemporary outdoor designs

Structured layouts with clean lines

Flagstone For:

Garden paths

Rustic patios

Cottage-style landscapes

Natural or woodland settings

Curved and freeform designs

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Natural stone is known for longevity, but maintenance requirements can vary.

Bluestone is somewhat more porous and may require periodic sealing to help prevent staining or discoloration over time. Because it is darker in color, it can also absorb and retain more heat in direct sunlight.

Flagstone is often slightly lower maintenance depending on the stone type, and lighter color varieties tend to stay cooler in sunny areas.

Both materials benefit from:

Proper base preparation

Professional installation

Periodic cleaning

Occasional joint maintenance or sealing

With quality installation and maintenance, both bluestone and flagstone can last for decades.

Cost Considerations

In many cases, bluestone is the more expensive option due to its density, weight, and regional quarry availability. Flagstone pricing can vary widely depending on the specific material selected, but it often provides more flexibility for homeowners working within a budget.

Which Stone Is Best for Your Project?

There’s no universal “better” option between bluestone and flagstone. The right choice depends on your goals for the space. If you prefer a cleaner, more modern look with strong durability and structured lines, bluestone may be the perfect fit.

If you want a softer, more natural, and rustic landscape design that blends into the surrounding environment, traditional flagstone may be the better choice.

At the end of the day, both materials offer timeless beauty, durability, and long-term value when professionally designed and installed. The best results come from choosing the material that complements both your home and the way you plan to enjoy your outdoor space for years to come. Our team at Naturescapes would love to help you plan and design your area and recommend which stone would enhance the natural beauty around your home. Schedule a consult today!

The post Bluestone Versus Flagstone: What’s The Difference? appeared first on Naturescapes.

This project in Downingtown focused on refreshing a rear patio while preserving a natural, organic look that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

Building a Strong, Natural Foundation

We began by carefully grading and leveling the patio area to create a stable base for the installation. To reinforce the perimeter and maintain long-term durability, small boulders were tightly placed along the edges. This approach not only enhances the natural aesthetic but also helps prevent the loss of base material over time.

With the foundation prepared, we installed irregular flagstone, cutting and fitting each piece with precision. The result is a clean, tightly joined surface that resembles a natural stone puzzle, structured yet organic in appearance.

Bringing It All Together

To improve flow throughout the yard, stepping stone pathways were added on both sides of the patio. These pathways create smooth, intuitive transitions to other areas of the rear garden while maintaining the same natural design language.

To complete the project, we constructed a flagstone walkway connecting the driveway to the rear garden. This addition enhances accessibility and ties the entire outdoor space together, creating a cohesive, functional environment that feels both intentional and effortlessly natural.

Freshening Up the Front

After removing all the old, overgrown plants, we had a blank canvas to work with. We started by laying down 4 cubic yards of rich bio-soil to prepare the beds for planting.

To anchor the front foundation, we installed two crape myrtle trees, one at each end, providing structure and seasonal interest. Near the walkway entrance, we added a Japanese black pine, which adds beautiful shape and texture to the garden.

We then filled in the remaining open spaces with a variety of shrubs, including hypericum, clethra, weigela, boxwood, and dwarf butterfly bush, creating layers of greenery and depth. To bring color and seasonal blooms, we incorporated perennials such as aster, penstemon, coreopsis, and iris.

This homeowner in Wayne wanted to refine a small wooded area bordering their driveway and street without losing the natural character of the landscape. The space had been left largely unmaintained, with accumulated leaves, debris, and overgrown plants detracting from its potential.

Preparing the Landscape

Our team began by carefully clearing out unwanted growth, creating a clean foundation while preserving the existing woodland feel. Once the area was prepped, we added a healthy layer of bio-soil to improve planting conditions and support long-term growth.

To ensure the new landscape blended seamlessly with its surroundings, we selected shade-tolerant shrubs. These plants thrive in lower-light conditions and naturally complement wooded environments, providing structure, texture, and year-round interest without looking overly formal.

Natural Touches

Along the edge of the driveway, we installed a border of river rock to prevent mulch and soil from washing onto the pavement. The river rock not only serves a practical purpose but also adds visual interest and clearly defines the new planting area.

The result is a refreshed, low-maintenance garden that feels like it has always belonged there. Best of all, the homeowner was absolutely thrilled with how the space was transformed with natural, polished improvements that enhance the property while respecting its woodland setting.

The bustling cityscapes, often shrouded in snow, can feel less inviting. However, there’s a way to bring a touch of springtime cheer to your winter: the stunning Amaryllis plant. By planting these bulbs in the fall, you can anticipate the emergence of their magnificent red blooms, adding a splash of color to your home during the bleakest winter days.

Each bulb grows one to three stems with 4-8 star-shaped funnel flowers each stem ranging in color from white to red or pink. Later long, wide green leaves will appear next to the flower stems.

They typically bloom in January, so planting amaryllises is a great way to spruce up your home during the chilly months and begin the year with a cheerful heart. Plus, if you follow our steps for taking care of your bulb, you will be able to recycle the same plant year after year and enjoy its blooms every winter.

How to Grow an Amaryllis

Here are five key steps to growing Amaryllis indoors:

Plant the Bulb in Well-Draining Soil. Use a pot that is slightly larger than the bulb, with drainage holes. Fill it with well-draining potting soil, leaving the top third of the bulb exposed.

Provide Bright, Indirect Light. Place the pot in a location with bright, indirect sunlight. A south-facing window is ideal. Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage straight growth.

Water Sparingly at First.Water lightly after planting to settle the soil. Keep the soil barely moist until growth appears, then increase watering to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

Maintain Warm Temperatures. Keep the plant in a warm room, ideally between 65–75°F (18–24°C). Warmer temperatures will encourage faster growth.

Support the Bloom Stalks. Once the flower stalks begin to grow, provide support if needed to prevent them from bending under the weight of the blooms.

After flowering, you can cut back the spent blooms and continue caring for the plant to encourage re-blooming the following year!

Caring for Your Amaryllis After Bloom

To ensure your Amaryllis blooms again next year, follow these simple steps:

Trim the Stalk: Once the flower has faded, use a sharp knife to cut the stalk about 6 inches above the bulb.

Maintain the Leaves: Keep the leaves intact as they continue to photosynthesize and provide energy to the bulb.

Outdoor Exposure: As temperatures rise, gradually expose the potted Amaryllis to filtered sunlight outdoors.

Consistent Watering: Water regularly during the growing season, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy.

Dormancy Period: In late September, move the pot to a cool, dark location (like a basement or garage) to induce a dormant period.

Reblooming Preparation: In December, bring the pot back into a warm, sunny location. Water regularly and watch it bloom again!

Rotate the Pot: Rotate the pot periodically to ensure even growth and prevent the plant from leaning towards the light source.

Amaryllis Brings Beauty to Winter

At Naturescapes, we recommend Amaryllis bulbs as wonderful holiday gifts. Not only will they lift the spirits of people missing the colors of spring, but they continue to bring joy year after year.

Patti, one of our landscape design customers, sent us this note saying, “What a lovely surprise to find the gift you left on my doorstep last week. I am excited to see the amaryllis bloom. How very thoughtful. Thank you and Merry Christmas. We are so excited to see our amaryllis bloom!”

The post Your Guide for Year-Round Amaryllis Care appeared first on Naturescapes.

At a charming property in Media, our team recently completed a serene pond rebuild that beautifully blends nature, craftsmanship, and sustainability.

The homeowners had an existing pond that had seen better days, but time and weather had taken their toll, and the space no longer reflected the calm, natural beauty they envisioned. They reached out to our team to breathe new life into their backyard water feature, hoping to create something that felt both refreshed and deeply connected to the landscape they loved.

Rebuilding with Purpose and Sustainability

Rather than starting from scratch with new materials, we took a mindful approach: every stone used in the new pond was recovered and reused from the client’s own property.

This sustainable design choice not only reduced waste but also gave the project an authentic, time-worn charm that perfectly complemented the surrounding garden. Each stone had its own story, and together, they formed the foundation for something truly special.

A Serene Space, Reimagined

The finished pond is smaller than before, but intentionally so. It’s designed to bring out the best of the space, offering tranquility and beauty without overwhelming the landscape.

The gentle sound of moving water now fills the air, inviting birds and pollinators to visit while offering the homeowners a peaceful retreat right outside their door.

Ready to Reimagine Your Outdoor Space?

Our team was proud to create a space that’s both eco-friendly and timeless, a small but meaningful reminder that sustainability and beauty can go hand in hand.

Sometimes, the biggest impact can come from a single day’s work. That was the case with this Malvern landscaping project, where our Naturescapes team completely revitalized the front facade of this home, creating a brand-new look that blends structure, color, and natural stone.

Out With the Old, In With the New

We began by carefully removing all the existing foundation/sidewalk plants to make way for a more intentional design. By starting with a clean slate, we ensured that each new element could stand out and contribute to the overall balance of the space.

Anchoring with Natural Elements

To frame the refreshed design, we placed several large boulders throughout the beds. These stone accents provide natural structure and help anchor the plantings, creating a timeless and welcoming look that complements the home’s architecture.

Layered Plantings for Structure and Color

The plant palette was chosen to offer both year-round interest and seasonal bursts of color. Upright evergreens add vertical accents near the entryway and driveway, giving the design height and definition. Along the walkway, neat rows of natural shrubs provide structure and a classic foundation presence.

For color and texture, we added a mix of perennials with deep-hued foliage and vibrant seasonal blooms. These selections will grow into soft, colorful drifts that contrast beautifully with the evergreens and stone. A mature Purple Leaf Plum tree already on the property ties the planting together, offering a dramatic backdrop with its rich burgundy leaves.

An Eye-Catching Transformation

The finished result is a foundation planting that feels both fresh and established. The combination of structure, texture, and natural elements has transformed the front of this Malvern home into a welcoming focal point with instant curb appeal, all in just one day.
