Naganathar temple at Keezhaperumpallam which is 8 kms from Thiruvenkadu is the kethu sthalam. Keezhaperumpallam is also known as Vanagari. Here Naganathar is the main deity and His consort is Soundarya Devi. This temple is dedicated to Kethu (South Lunar Node), one of the nine planets or navagraha. Kethu Bhagavan has the head of a snake and the body of an asura. It is rare to see Kethu Bhagavan with his head. Kethu worshiped Shiva here to get rid of his sins. Here he is seen worshiping Naganathar with folded hands.

The devas and the asuras churned the paarkadal (Celestial Ocean) to get the Holy Nectar (Amrutham). Lord Vishnu decided to distribute it only amongst the devas and not asuras as the amrutham would make the asuras stronger and their atrocities will increase. When Lord Vishnu was distributing the Amrutham amongst the devas, at the behest of Sukracharya, one of the asuras, in the guise of a deva consumed the nectar. The Sun and the Moon noticed this and complained to Lord Vishnu. An angry Vishnu used his chakrayudham (discus) to cut the asura into two and threw them away. The head joined with a snake’s body to become Rahu Bhagavan. The body portion kept growing because the asura had consumed Amrutham. This later joined with the head of a snake and became Kethu Bhagavan. They prayed to Shiva to get rid of their sin and sought to be included as planets. Their wish was granted by Him.

However, Rahu and Kethu never forgave the Sun and the Moon. They cause eclipses as an act of revenge. Rahu is further classified as Nitya and Parva Rahu. Nitya Rahu keeps tugging at the Moon causing it to wax and wane, while the Parva Rahu swallows the moon causing the lunar eclipse. Kethu causes the solar eclipse.

Bamboo is the sacred tree of this place. In order to redress the defects of kethu upon the Devotees, they come here and worship kethu.

In front of the temple there is the holy tank known as Naga Theertham.

Dharbharanyeswaraswamy or Dharbaranyeswarar temple at Thirunallar is dedicated to Saneeswaran or Saturn. Thirunallar in Karaikal, in the Union Territory of Pondichery, is one of the more famous and important navagraha temples. It is at a distance of 6 Kms from Karaikal town. This is one of the parivara sthalam.

Though Saneeswaran here is very famous, the presiding deity is Dharbaranyeswarar. His Consort is Bogamartha Poon Mulayal or Praanaambikai. The lingam here is a self manifested Lingam or Swayambhu. The Sthala vruksham is Dharba or grass. This place was a forest of Dharba. Dharba is a type of grass and aranyam means forest and hence the name Dharbaranyeswaraswamy or Dharbaranyeswarar for the Lord. Even today you can see the impression of grass on the lingam here. Thirunallar is one of the “Saptha Vidanga Sthalam”. The idols in these temples depict Lord Shiva performing one of His seven dance forms. It is believed that Lord Shiva imparted the knowledge of the Vedas & Shastras to Brahma here. People pray to Swarna Ganapathy here to overcome financial problems.

Lord Surya was married to Usha or Light. Usha Devi was unable to bear the heat radiated from Surya and left her shadow or Chaya with Suryan while she herself stayed away. Saneeswaran is the son of Chaya Devi and Suryan. The very sigh tof Saneeswaran is dreaded and believed to be destructive. Suryan’s chariot is believed to have been destroyed when Saneeswaran as a baby first opened his eyes and looked at Suryan. Saneeswaran after intense penance on Lord Shiva attained the status of a celestial planet.

It is believed that Saneeswaran became lame when he was kicked by Lord Yama (Sani’s step brother – son of Surya & Usha) in a fit of anger. It is because of this that he is a slow moving planet, taking approximately two and a half years to move from one Zodiac Sign to another. Such a transit known as Sani peyarchi is very important and devotees from all over throng the temple to offer their prayers. Saneeswaran is believed to have a major influence on the course of ones life and also the most feared planet. The unique aspect here is that Saneeswaran is in standing posture with abhayahastha ie hand bestowing blessing.

Everyone experiences sade sati or ezharai sani in their life time. It occurs 2 to 3 three times in a life span as it recurs after approximately 30 years. Even the Lord himself is not exempt from the effect of ezharai sani. Once, Shiva hid himself in a remote cave to meditate and escape the effect of Sani. On his return he was informed by Sani that the Lord had went into hiding in the first place because of the influence of ezharai Sani. An astonished but pleased Shiva, declared to him to be Saneeswaran. No other planet has the tag eswaran to the name.

There is a saying in Tamil “Saniyaipol Koduppavanum illai, saniyaipol keduppavanum illai” which translates to “There is none like Saneeswaran who can give a good life or ruin a life”. Actually, even at the worst of times Saneeswaran only delays but never denies. The experience of going through the ezharai sani makes one mentally very strong. He does not test us more than we can handle. He affects a person based on his past deeds. He is supposed to be Just. Interestingly, the two sons of Suryan, judge us and give us the palan or results based on our karma or deeds. Saneeswaran does this during our lifetime and Yama does that after ones death.

According to a Legend, King Nala had not washed his feet properly while doing puja. Saneeswaran who was waiting for such an opportunity for about 12 years, immediately caught hold of him. This has probably prompted the tradition to wash our feet before entering the house. Getting back to the story of King Nala, under the influence of ezharai sani, he lost his kingdom, separated from his wife and children, had health problems and wandered around like a beggar. As per the advice of Bharadwaja muni he worshipped Dharbaranyeswarar at Thirunallar, after a dip in the holy tank here. It was then he was relieved of the effects of Sani. After this, Shiva asked Saneeswaran to be here and bless all his devotees.

திருக்கோவில் வரலாறு :
நிடதநாட்டு மன்னன் நளன் சேதி நாட்டு இளவரசி தமயந்தியை திருமணம் செய்தான். இப்பெண்ணை தேவர்கள் மணக்க விரும்பினர். ஆனால், நளனை அவள் திருமணம் செய்ததால் பொறாமை கொண்டு, சனீஸ்வரனை நாடினர். சனீஸ்வரன் நளனின் தூய்மையான மனநிலையை அவர்களுக்கு உணர்த்த, அவனை ஏழரை ஆண்டுகள் பிடித்து துன்பப்படுத்தினார். மனைவி, மக்களையும், உடுத்தும் துணியைக் கூட இழந்து அவஸ்தைப்பட்ட மன்னன் நளன் எதற்கும் கலங்கவில்லை.

ஒரு கட்டத்தில் திருநள்ளாறு தர்ப்பாரண்யேஸ்வரரை நளன் வணங்கினான். அப்போது சனி அவனை விட்டு நீங்கியது. அவனது வேண்டுகோளின் படி இதே தலத்தில் கிழக்கு நோக்கி அமர்ந்து ஈஸ்வர பட்டத்துடன் "சனீஸ்வரன்' என்ற பெயர் தாங்கி அருள்பாலித்தார். கிழக்கு நோக்கிய சனீஸ்வரன் என்பதாலும், சிவனருள் பெற்றவர் என்பதாலும், இவரை வழிபட்டு, சனியினால் ஏற்படும் தொல்லைகள் நீங்கப் பெறலாம். நளசரிதம் படித்தவர்களும் சனித்தொல்லை நீங்கப் பெற்று, வாழ்வில் தன்னம்பிக்கை பெறுவர்.
ஒதுங்கிய நந்தி: இத்தலத்தில் நந்தியும், பலிபீடமும் சுவாமிக்கு எதிரே இல்லாமல் சற்று ஒதுங்கியிருப்பதைக் காணலாம். இடையன் ஒருவன் அரசன் ஆணைப்படி கோயிலுக்குப் பால் அளந்து கொடுத்துவந்தான். கணக்கன் அப்பாலைத் தன்வீட்டுக்கு அனுப்பிப் பொய்க்கணக்கு எழுதி, இடையனையும் அச்சுறுத்தி வந்தான். செய்தியறிந்த மன்னன் கோபம் கொண்டான். அப்போது இறைவன், இடையனைக் காக்கவும், கணக்கனைத் தண்டிக்கவும் எண்ணி தம் சூலத்தை ஏவினார். அந்த சூலத்திற்கு வழிவிடவே இக்கோயிலில் பலிபீடம் சற்று விலகியுள்ளது. சூலம் கணக்கன் தலையைக் கொய்தது. இடையனுக்கு இறைவன் காட்சி தந்து அருள்புரிந்தார்.

திருக்கோவில் சிறப்பு :
இங்கு தர்ப்பாரண்யேஸ்வரர் சுயம்பு மூர்த்தியாக அருள்பாலிக்கிறார்.(மூலவர் தர்ப்பையில் முளைத்த சுயம்பு மூர்த்தி) சிவலிங்கத்தின்மீது முளைத்த தழும்பு உள்ளது. இது சப்தவிடங்கத் தலங்களுள் ஒன்று. இத்தலத்தில் நந்தியும், பலிபீடமும் சுவாமிக்கு எதிரே இல்லாமல் சற்று ஒதுங்கியிருப்பதைக் காணலாம்.இக்கோயில் சோழர்களால் கட்டப்பட்டது. சிவனின் தேவாரப்பாடல் பெற்ற 274 சிவாலயங்களில் இது 115 வது தேவாரத்தலம் ஆகும்.
திருக்கோவில் பெருமை :
வாசல்படிக்கு மரியாதை கொடுங்கள்: திருநள்ளாறு செல்பவர்கள் ராஜகோபுரத்தை வணங்கி உள்ளே நுழைந்ததும், முதல் படியை தொட்டு வணங்க வேண்டும். ஏனெனில், இந்த வாசல்படி மாடத்தில் சனீஸ்வரன் தங்கியிருப்பதாக ஒரு நம்பிக்கை. நளன் தர்ப்பாரண்யேஸ்வரர் கோயிலுக்குள் நுழைந்ததுமே, நியாயத்துக்கு புறம்பாக செயல்பட்டதற்காக இறைவனிடம் தண்டனை அடைய வேண்டி வருமோ என்று பயந்த சனீஸ்வரன் வாசல்படியோடு நின்று, அவனை விட்டு நீங்கி விட்டதாக சொல்வர். ஆனால், இறைவன் சனீஸ்வரனின் நிலையைப் பாராட்டி ஈஸ்வரப் பட்டம் வழங்கி, தன் கோயில் முகப்பிலேயே வைத்துக் கொண்டார்.

Those visiting Thirunallar should first have an oil bath in the Nala theertham. Some believe that you should leave behind a piece of your cloth near the tank. There are lots of shops around the tank, selling black towels, sachet of gingely oil etc. The tank is usually clean but on occasions you may not want to get into the water. After the bath worship the Vinayakar in the small temple nearby, break a coconut there and then proceed towards the Dharbaranyeswarar temple which is about 5 minutes walk from there.

Devotees offer Blue cloth and light Gingely oil lamp. Special Poojas are performed on Saturdays as Saturday is the day of Saneeswaran.

Sri Naganathaswamy Temple or Rahu Sthalam is one of the 9 Navagraha Temples around Kumbakonam and is dedicated to Rahu . The Presiding Deity is Lord Naganathaswamy. There are two Shrines for the Goddess; Piraiyanivanudalumai’s Shrine is adjacent to Naganathaswamy’s shrine and GiriGujambika with Lakshmi and Saraswathy by Her side has a separate temple. Rahu Bhagavan is seen with his two consorts Nagavalli and Nagakanni. Sri Naganathaswamy Temple is one where Lord Shiva was worshipped by Rahu and got relieved of a curse. (Read the post “Keezhaperumpallam – Kethu Temple“) A unique feature of Naganatha Swamy temple is that Rahu Bhagavan is seen with human face. Usually in other places, Rahu Bhagavan is seen with a serpent face. Here Rahu Bhagavan is present with his two consorts Nagavalli and Nagakanni. This was originally a forest of Senbaka trees. A Shivalingam was found under one of these trees here and hence He came to be known as Shenbagarane Eswara.

Nandi after worshipping Shiva attained the status as Nandeeswaran here. Vinayakar attained the status of Head of Ganas or Ganapathi. Indira, the King of Devas was relieved of bad smell emanating from his body by worshiping Goddess Girigujambal with Punugu.

On entering the Eastern gate way, one can find the Vinayaga temple, Balipeedam, Nandeeswarar Mandapam and Dhwaja Sthambam (Flag post). On the southern side there is the temple tank. On entering the main gopuram, the Deity of Rahu Bhagavan is in the south West corner of the praharam.

Pooja: Astrologers suggest that doing Milk abisekam (especially on Sundays) here for Rahu during Rahu kalam (period of 1and 1/2 hours occurring every day) the malefic effects of Rahu like marriage obstacles, lack of progeny, troubled marital life, Kalasarpa Dhosham, Kalasthra Dhosha, Sarpa Dhosha are all neutralized. During this milk abhishegam, the milk turns blue. Offering of blue cloth and ulutham paruppu (urad dal) is made here. Mantharai flower is considered special to him.

Reciting these mantra helps alleviate the malefic effects.

When Lord Vishnu asked Bali for 3 steps of land in Vamana Avataram, Sukracharya tried to dissuade Bali from granting the boon. He took the form of a bee and blocked the mouth of the Kamandalam (a type of Jar, usually carried by rishis) from which Bali would pour water to signify the grant of the boon. Vishnu used a dharba to clear the blockage in the Kamandalam and in the process blinded Sukracharya in one eye. Vamana then took the Vishwaroopam and covered the whole universe in two steps. The 3rd step was placed on Bali. An angry Sukracharya, cursed Vishnu. After severe penance to Shiva here, Vishnu was relieved of his curse.

An interesting connection between Valleeswarar Koil in Mylapore and this story is as follows. Sukran after being blinded in one eye undertook a pilgrimage of Shivalayams to get back his sight. It was at Valleeswarar temple in Mylapore that he got back his sight. Offer prayers to Shiva at Valleeswarar Koil in Mylapore to get rid of eye ailments and to be blessed with good eyesight.

There is another story of how Vishnu incurred Sukracharya’s wrath. Sukracharya was the son of Brigu Maharishi. Once during a war between the devas and asuras, Brigu Maharishi’s wife, was accidentally beheaded by Vishnu’s chakram (discus). An angry Sukracharya cursed Vishnu. As a result of the curse, He was born as Sudarsanar to Vasudeva, a Vaishnava Brahmin. Sudarsanar was a staunch Shiva devotee and was popularly known as Haradatta Shivacharyar. There are stories of the ordeals undergone by Haradatta to prove his devotion for Shiva. Images pertaining to these are seen in this temple and also in the Vishnu temple in the village. Haradatta used to spend much of his time meditating before the Dakshinamurthy.

Dakshinamurthy is always seen with a demon being crushed under his feet. The demon signifies ignorance. It means that Dakshinamurthy leads us from ignorance to the knowledge of self. Instead; you can find the image of Haradatta worshipping Dakshinamurthy, which is a unique feature of this temple.

There is an interesting story associated with the Nandi here. A poor Brahmin was afflicted by pasu dosham because a calf had expired when he threw a bundle of grass at it. The Brahmin as advised by Haradatta offered a clump of grass to the stone Nandi. To everybody’s astonishment, the stone Nandi is supposed to have consumed the grass. It is said that since this Nandi is eating the grass the tongue is not seen hanging outside.

Sukracharyar was imparted the knowledge of Amirtha Sanjeevini Mantra by Lord Shiva. This Mantra can bring the dead back to life. Sukracharya used this mantra in one of the deva-asura wars and revived the slain asuras. One being approached by devas for help, Lord Shiva is said to have swallowed Sukracharya in a fit of rage. Sukracharyar meditated on Shiva inside His stomach. Karpagambal prevailed on Shiva to let Sukracharyar out. Hence Sukran is very devoted to the Ambal and is Her favourite. Shiva also conferred on Sukracharya the status of a celestial planet here. There is no idol for Sukran here. Shiva blesses those who come with their prayers to Sukran.Brahma is said to have been blessed with the vision of Shiva’s marriage with Parvati.

He is the second most beneficial planet after Guru. If Sukran is favourably placed in a person’s horoscope, the inmate will be blessed with prosperity, beautiful wife, own house, vehicle, fame & marriage. The person will also be very influential. An unfavourably positioned Sukran in ones horoscope causes eye ailments, indigestion, and impotency, loss of appetite and skin problems. Lord Sukran is offered white Lotus, white cloth, mochai kottai (common bean) and aththi (fig) to alleviate problems caused by Sukra dosham. Friday is the day of Sukran and worship on Fridays is considered very special. Sukran is also Ambal’s favourite and the special day for Ambal is Friday as well.

Sri Abathsahayeswarar Temple, the sthalam of Guru Bhagavan is at Alangudi. The presiding deity here is Abathsahayeswarar and His consort is Elavarkuzhali Ammai or Umayammai. The Shiva Lingam here is a Swayambhu (self manifested). Dakshinamurthy in the praharam (circumambulatory path) around Shiva’s shrine is worshipped as Guru Bhagavan here.

Other deities like Pillayar Murugar, Dakshinamurthy, the Navagrahas, and Chandikeswarar are also present in the praharam (circumabulatory path). As defined in the temple Vaasthu Shastra, the deities are placed in a particular position and facing a particular direction. The story of the Devas and Asuras churning the celestial ocean or the parkadal is associated with many temples. During this churning, Vasuki spat out deadly poison. Lord Shiva consumed that poison here to save the world. Hence the name Alangudi: Ala meaning poison. The Lord himself came to be known as Abathsahayeswarar (one who helps in crisis) as he saved the world from impending danger. Lord Ganesha defeated Gajamuhasuran here, to save the Devas from the asura’s atrocities. Ganesha is worshipped here as “Kalangamal Kaaththa Vinayakar”. This place is also known as Thirumana Mangalam as Ambal undertook penance to marry Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva in the guise of a boatman had helped Sundarar to cross the Vettaru which was in spate. It is believed that Sundarar had received his Gnanopadesam from Dakshinamurthy at this temple. Gu in Sanskrit means darkness and ru means the destroyer of that. Hence Guru means one who destroys darkness or one who enlightens. Thus Guru is one who leads you from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge.

Alangudi is the most popular Parihara sthalam for Guru. The other ones that readily come to mind are Thittai and Padi in Madras. Poolai is the sthala vriksham.

Pooja: Guru is attributed to luck, favor and fortune. The unfavourable position in the horoscope can cause skin problems, arthritis, heart related problems, worry & uneasiness. Guru blesses his devotees with progeny, good education, valour, long life and cure from diseases. Devotees light 24 ghee lamps and do pradharshanam (circumambulation) of Shiva’s shrine 24 times. Offerings of yellow cloth, konda kadalai (chick pea) and vella mullai (a type of Jasmine) are made to Guru here. The transit of Guru, known as Guru Peyarchi which happens every year, is an important festival in this temple. Thursdays being the day of Guru is very important. Fasting or eating only once (oru pozhudhu) on Thursdays is recommended. Banana and salt is to be avoided on these days.

Thiruvenkadu, one of the navagraha sthalams, is the Budhan sthalam dedicated to Planet Mercury. Thiruvenkadu’s Sanskrit name is Shwetaranya and both literally mean – sacred white forest. This is also called Adhi Chidambaram and the Chidambara Rahasyam is also here. As seen in Chidambaram, Vishnu is near Nataraja. It is situated 15 kilometers away from Vaitheeswaran Koil, on the Sirkali – Poompuhar road. Here the Lord is Shwetaranyeswarar and His consort is Brahma Vidyambal. Indran, Airavatam, Budhan, Suryan and Chandran are said to have worshipped Shiva here. Thiruvenkadu is one of the six places considered to be equivalent to Kasi. The other five are Rameswaram, Srivanchiyam, Gaya, Thiriveni Sangamam & Thilatharpanapuri

Marutwasura, an asura, was troubling the Rishis and the people of Thiruvenkadu. The people prayed to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva sent Nandi (Bull) – his vahana, to fight the demon. Marutwasura was defeated by Nandi and thrown into the sea. Marutwasura through his penance obtained sula – from Lord Shiva. The demon then returned with greater intensity to attack the innocent people. Once again, at the request of the devotees, Shiva sent Nandi. However, on this occasion, Nandi could not fight the demon as the demon had the Sula of Shiva. The demon caused wounds on Nandi’s back with the Sula. The idol of Nandi which bears scars on its body is seen here.

An angry Shiva opened his Third Eye and killed the demon. The idol of Aghoramurthy, a manifestation of Shiva’s anger, is installed in Thiruvenkadu. Worshiping Aghoramurthy, especially on Sunday nights is considered important and special.

There is also another story of Swetaketu associated with Thiruvenkadu. Swetaketu’s story is similar to that of Markendaiyan. Swetaketu was destined to die at the end of his eight year but the Lord prevented Yama from taking His devotee’s life.

Lord Shiva is known to have performed his seven forms of dance or Tandavam viz Ananda tandavam, Sandhya tandavam, Samhara tandavam, Tripuranta tandavam, Urdhva tandavam, Bhujanga tandavam and Lalita tandavam here. The three holy tanks here, known as Agni Theertham, Surya Theertham and Chandra Theertham are believed to have been created out of the three drops which fell from Lord Shiva’s eyes when he was dancing. Another rare feature is that the deity is present here with five faces viz Easanam, Tatpurusham, Aghoram, Vamadevam and Sadyojatam. They represent direction and an aspect of Lord Shiva. Easanam is facing the sky and represents purity, Vamdevam faces north and represents sustenance, Tatpurisha faces east and represents spirituality that has destroyed the ego, Aghoram faces south and represents the destructive and regenerative aspect of Shiva, Sadyojatam faces west and represents creation.

There are three sthala vrikshams here – Vilvam, Vadaval and Konrai. Bhadhra Kali amman has a separate shrine. There are separate shrines for ashtalakshmi and Navagrahas. Navagrahas are installed in a row. llirukuvelur, one of the most important Saivite shrines is popularly known as Vaitheeswaran Koil. Vaidhyanathaswamy or Vaitheeswaran (God of Medicine) got his name as He had cured Angarakan of his Leprosy here. Before I proceed further, I would like to inform about the Adhi Vaithyanatha Swamy Temple at a Village called Mannipallam, about 6 Kms from here. Click on this link to read more about that temple.

Vaidyanathaswamy is the main deity here and His consort is Thayyalnayaki ambal. She stands with the medicinal oil to cure the diseases of the devotees. Lord Subramanya, a very important deity here, is known as Selva Muthukumaraswamy. It is to be noted that Chevvai is ruled by Lord Subramanya. During Lord Subramanya’s fight with Tharakasuran – brother of Surapadman – there was a lot of casualty on both sides leaving many dead and injured. Lord Shiva obliged Lord Subramnya’s prayer to treat the injured.

Chevvai is supposed to have been born out of a drop of sweat that fell from Lord Shiva’s forehead onto the Earth. Another version is that Chevvai is the Son of Sage Bharadwaja and that Mother Earth brought him up. Yet another story goes thus; Veerabhadra was created by Lord Shiva from his Third Eye (Netrikann) to disturb the yaga of Dakshan (Lord Shiva’s Father-in-law). The Devas were terrified by the havoc created by Veerabhadra. Veerabhadra who became conscious of this fact then calmed down and attained the status of a celestial planet and came to be known as Chevvai. He is red in colour and hence known as Chevvai.

Chevvai or Angarakan is present in two forms – Utsavar (the idol that is taken out in procession during festivals) is near the Vaithyanathaswamy sannidhi (shrine) and the moolavar (the idol that is placed permanently in a place) is in the Eastern side of the outer praharam (circumambulatory path). The Utsava Murthy, mounted on a goat, is taken out in a procession inside the temple premises every Tuesday. There is a small shrine to Lord Dhanvantari in the praharam (circumambulatory path) around Vaitheeswaran’s Sannidhi (Sanctum sanctorum).

Siddhamruta Theertham, a big tank opposite to Ambal’s shrine, is known to have medicinal property. Devotees believe that taking bath in these waters cures them of their diseases, especially skin diseases. Angarakan was cured of his leprosy after a dip in the holy water here. It is also known as Goksheera (Go means cow and ksheera means milk) Theertham, as Kamadhenu’s milk flowed into this tank when she performed abhishegam to the deity here with her milk. It tastes sweet like a cane juice and hence known as Ikshusara (ikshu means cane and sara means juice) Theertham. Jatayau had his bath here and hence it is also known as Jatayu Theertham. Devotees buy jaggery from one of the many shops outside the temple and dissolve it in the water here. However, these days the temple administration is very conscious about keeping the water clean and discourage this practice. A separate bin has been placed near the temple tank to deposit the jaggery. After a dip in the tank or prokshanam (sprinkling water on ones head), have the darshan of Vinayakar and then offer salt and pepper opposite to Ambal’s shrine. You could buy the Silver plated body organs and deposit in the Hundi. This is supposed to cure all diseases. Have the darshan of Vinayakar in the praharam (circumambulatory path) around Vaidhyanathaswamy’s deity before praying to Lord Vaidhyanathaswamy. Selvamuthukumar, Gajalakshmi, Natarajar, Durgai, Dhanvantri, Dakshinamurthy, Sattanathar, Jatayu Kundam and Angarakan (Utsava murthy) are all there as you do the pradarshanam (cicumambulation) of Lord Vaidhyanathaswamy.

Near the Eastern Gopuram (tower) there are deities of Jwarahareshwarar (on who cures the common fever), Palaniandavar and Angarakan (Moolavar). The sthala vruksham is neem tree and is found in the outer praharam(circumambulatory path) near the Eastern Gopuram. This tree is supposed to have been in existence since Kritayuga. It was Kadamba during the Kritayuga, Vilva during the Tretayuga, Vakula during the Dwaparayuga and in the Kaliyuga it is neem. You can see the deity of Aadhi Vaitheeswaran under the sthala vruksham.

It is believed that Rama and Lakshmana cremated Jatayu here. There are niches of Rama, Lakshmana, and Vishwamitra. Vasishtha and Jatayu near the Jatayu Kunda.

Nethrapidi Sandhanam and Thiruchandu Urundai are two of the prasadams which are believed to cure all ailments. Thiruchandu Urundai or medicinal pellet was given by Vaidhyanathaswamy to Angarakan to cure his leprosy. It is prepared from the Homa Kundam. Nethrapidi Santhanam is a paste made by mixing sandal powder and saffron with water. This is applied on Muthukumaraswamy’s forehead before being given as medicine.

Poojas: The Chevvai dosham (malefic effect) caused by unfavourable position of Angarakan or Chevvai in the horoscope may manifest as aggressiveness, tendency to get into unnecessary arguments or jealousy in the native. It can also result in loss of money, physical injury or even imprisonment. Chevvai dosham is rectified by performing parihara poojas (appeasement poojas) to this deity. Devotees may perform Angaraka Pooja to get rid of financial crisis. Worshipping Chevvai here helps in neutralizing the negative effects. Offerings of red cloth and Bengal gram or kadalai paruppu are made to Chevvai here. Tuesdays are special days here as Chevvai is associated with that day of the week.

Thingalur is the sthalam for Chandran. Thingal in Tamil means Chandran and hence the name Thingalur. The presiding deity is Kailasanathar and his consort is Periyanayakiamman.

When Lord Vishnu was distributing the Amrutham amongst the devas, at the behest of Sukracharya, one of the asuras in the guise of a deva consumed the nectar. Suryan and Chandran noticed this and complained to Lord Vishnu. An angry Vishnu used his chakrayudham (discus) to cut the asura into two and threw them away. The head joined with a snake’s body to become Rahu Bhagavan. The body portion kept growing because the asura had consumed Amrutham. This later joined with the head of a snake and became Kethu Bhagavan. Now, Rahu and Kethu did not forgive Suryan and Chandran. Rahu went after Chandran and started consuming him. It is here that Chandran prayed to Lord Siva and got his blessings. Shiva blessed Chandran with the power to grow back to full size in 15 days after being consumed by Rahu. That is why we have the waxing and waning moon. Shiva also blessed Chandran by adorning Chandran on his forehead so that anyone who prays Shiva will have to pray Chandran.

There is also another interesting story pertaining to the waxing and waning periods of Chandran, which goes thus. King Dakshan gave all his 27 daughters in marriage to Chandran. Those 27 wives of Chandran are the 27 stars in Tamil Calendar. As Chandran’s favourite was Rohini and he spent most of his time with her, the others complained about this to their father. King Dakshan asked Chandran to treat all of them equally, which Chandran refused. An angry Dakshan, cursed Chandran that all his beauty and brightness will disappear slowly everyday. A worried Chandran, on the advice of Lord Brahma, then performed penance on Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared before him and adorned his forehead with the crescent-shaped Chandran. Shiva then came to be known as Chandrasekaran also. He blessed Chandran to regain his beauty and brightness slowly day by day. This waxing period of the moon is called Sukla Paksham or Valarpirai. Chandran gets back all his beauty and attains full brightness on Full moon day or pournami. From Pournami to the full moon day he again starts loosing his beauty and brightness till the New moon day or Ammavasai. This waning period of the moon is called Krishna Paksham or Theipirai.

There is another legend of Apputhi Adigal, an ardent follower of Thirunavukkarasar. Apputhi Adigal was born in Thingalur. He indulged in lot of charity and social work in his village, all in the name of Thirunavukkarasar, whom he had not even seen. Thirunavukkarasar heard about Apputhi Adigal and visited the village. Thirunavukkarasar accepted the invitation of Apputhi Adigal to have lunch at his place. Apputhi Adigal’s son died when he had gone to fetch a plantain leaf. Apputhi Adigal, going by the saying “Athithi devo bhava” put his personal sorrow behind and served food to his mentor. Thirunavukkarasar came to know about the young boy’s death and carried the corpse to Kailasanathar temple in Thingalur. Here he implored to Lord Shiva and brought him back to life.

Chandra Dosham causes concern in mother’s health, mental imbalance, skin and nervous disorder & jaundice. Chandran blesses his devotees who pray here with wealth, mother’s well being, wife’s happiness, prosperity, marriage and offspring. Mondays are special days for Chandran. Offering of raw rice pudding mixed with jaggery, white flowers (White Arali) and white clothing are made to Chandran here.

Once upon a time, some sages were sitting and doing their penance. They had control over their senses and denied no desire Jealousy, Greed, lust anger etc., They were known for their kind approach. They were scholars in from Vedas, Six Sastras, Eighteen Puranas, Twenty Eight Agamas, Sixty four arts and Ninety six Philosophies.

Among the Sages there was one Saint called 'KalaMunivar'. He would predict all the three periods of human beings.

One day a young saint came to KalaMunivar and enquired about his future. KalaMunivar was predicting the life of the Young saint. The young Saint non-Chalantly asked the KalaMunivar to know about his own future and smiled teasingly, KalaMunivar was surprised as no one dared to ask him such a question. KalaMunivar was willing to know more about the young Saint and asked him who he was. The young Saint replied that he was 'Kala Devan' and disappeared.

KalaMunivar started thinking about his past and future. In past, he was eating the legs of Crabs and for which he was bound to get leprosy. KalaMunivar was shell shocked and dumb found.

As he was sad, the other saints enquired him why he was depressed. Kalamunivar explained to them about his impending disease. The otherSaints advised him that none can escape from the fate and only it can be mitigated to lesser extent. They told him that Navagrahas are the ones who inflict the cruel hands to fate on human beings and advised him to offer prayers to navagrahas.
KalaMunivar moved from Himalayas to the Southern side. On fixing auspicious date, he started a rigorous meditation and Homas. As Homas continued, the heat generated made Navagrahas to appear before KalaMunivar to reduce the temperature.

KalaMunivar prostrated before them and stood in Joy with tears coming down copiously Navagrahas asked the Kalamunivar to express his desire to fulfill.

KalaMunivar explained to them his predicament and save him from the dreadful disease. Navagrahas granted his prayer and blessed him.

This news reached the Bhrama Deva and naturally Bhrama got angry. He ordered Navagraha to appear before him. Navagraha appeared before Bhrama and told them about their disobedience and remainded them of their role.

Bharama cursed them and punished that they have to born on earth individually and undergo the punishment of suffering from leprosy of KalaMunivar

After hearing the punishment, Navagrahas came dead silence and sought forgiveness from lord Bhrama Deva, the creator of the Universe. They pleaded their ignorance and forgiveness.
Bhrama was moved and made them to seek redressal for their disobedience. He directed them to reach Bharath and move to south where Cauvery is flowing. In the north bank of the river they can find 'Arghavanam' known as Velerukkakadu. Stay there offer worship from the first Sunday of Tamil month Karthigai for 12 weeks in total of 78 days on Mondays, they have to take bath before sunrise in Cauvery and offer prayers to Prarivaradhan and MangalaNayaki with in 2 1/2hours after sunrise, they have to have curdrice in 'Arka leaf' amd eat the same. On the other days they have to be in fast to release themselves from the punishment.

Navagrahas reached the earth and came to bharath. They were in search of Argavanam. They saw 'Agasthiar' and followed him quickly. They enquired about Argavanam where Agasthiar took them there as he was also going to that place.

They all reached the place. Everybody took bath in cauvery worshipped Lord Pranavaradhan and Mangalambigai. Agasthiar stretched his hand on cauvery took waters and poured on the lord. It was sight to be seen. Everybody admired Agasthiar. There every Navagraha was afflicted with the disease no leprosy.

Slowly and Steadily their body began to shrunk and foul smell started. They asked Agasthiar to guide them on their mode of worship. Agasthiar asked them to choose north-east and place the vinayagar to remove and avoid obstacles for them and start doing their penance from Sunday, Agasthiar asked them to choose nine water spots and each one of them should take bath daily from it. Navagraha enquired about his significance to them the secreat of it. It is one way of curing the illness as the leaf contains some medical touch.

Navagrahas as directed by Agasthiar followed the rituals strictly on fath day, Monday much to their surprise they took bath in cauvery and they found that the disease has cured more them 50%. They offered worship to lord Pranavaradhan and Mangalambikai. Both appeared before them and blessed them as they were satisfied about their meditation. They were completely cured from the disease. Lord asked them to stay in the Argavanam constrict temple of their bless the devotees freely.

As Navagrahas were in ecstasy, KalaMunivar appeared before them, prostrated and sobbed uncontrollably for their suffering, Navagrahas pacified KalaMunivar and enquired about his knowings on them. KalaMunivar explained to them about his meeting of Agasthiar and narration of Agasthiar.

All worshipped vinayakar for his benign blessings to complete their task without any obstacles. They named the vinayakar as "Koltheertha Vinayakar". Navagrahas requested KalaMunivar to build them each temple at Argavanam. KalaMunivar obeyed Navagrahas by building them a temple for each one of them.
