I like to read blogs and I always don’t like to read them on their perspective websites. When the author offers an RSS feed, I am quick to connect.  This way I can read the post at my leisure.

However, authors want and encourage readers to visit their website.  The reason is simple no visitors mean no revenue.  I receive the RSS feed and emails on many sites.

RSS Feeds Benefit Other Groups

RSS benefits readers and followers. It is very easy to scan the contents of several sites in a very short time, especially if you follow many blogs. Statistically though, less than ten percent of blog readers use RSS. Even though the percentage is low, loyalty is much higher.  My wanting to comment on the post brings me back to the author’s website.

Syndicators read blogs. They and authors benefit from syndication.  The author’s post gets in front of more readers and more readers on the author’s blog. As search engines crawl syndication sites, you get increased visibility. Readers who like what you write will sign up on your site.

Full Post or Excerpt

Your RSS feeds may be syndicated one of two ways: either the full post or an excerpt.  The full post feed is quite obvious. The entire post is published in the feed. 

When the full feed is published, your followers love it because they can read the entire article offline. Syndicators can take advantage of your entire post for much added value.  Search engines  take advantage of the entire article and your post is indexed better.

What About Excerpts?  Excerpts are used to tease you to go to the entire post. That usually is the case. But the negative is that the syndicators and search engines are strapped with indexing your site with partial information.

What About That Other Group?

There is one other group; they are the content thieves.  RSS is great a great tool for content thieves. They don’t need to do any research to scrape your site. They take your post and copy it onto their site and run.

The other day, I was reviewing my website as I often do.  I view it with all the major browsers. Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari, Chrome and Opera. I do this so I appreciate my visitors’ experiences. When I accessed my site home page with Chrome, this image was displayed. It was telling me that it had found a virus on my website. I discovered I needed to learn how protect your website from viruses.

I did some research and found that my htaccess file was infected and was diverting 404 (page not found) traffic to an undesirable site. 

Is this common?  Yes it is. Common enough to attract the attention of Google to send this alert to you.

Confirm the Problem

the first step to protect your website from viruses is to know what the problem is. I visit a site that offers a free scan.  It’s called Sucuri SiteCheck. Simply enter your website name and click on the Scan Website button.

Sucuri SiteCheck provides two very important potential problems.

• Confirms whether your site has a virus.
• Determines whether your site is blacklisted. If you are blacklisted, Google will delist your site.

Both problems are integrity related.

First, Protect Your Website from Viruses

There is a very easy way to protect your website from viruses.  It is called BulletProof Security. BulletProof Secuity is designed to protect your htaccess files.  The process is pretty straight forward. Follow the directions to install a protected htaccess file and to back it up.

Then, Get Become Favorable in the Eyes of Google.

Once you have eliminated the virus, then you need to get back to being into the good favor of Google.  And that is very easy. 

One of the functions of Google Webmasters Tools is to request a virus scan of your website.  Simply request Google rescan the website.  When the site is found clean, the block is removed and your site is restored to normal search.

Re-Verify with Sucuri SiteCheck

Once you have confirmed you have cleared your site of the virus and Google has also confirmed and removed the blacklist, go back and rescan your site.  Be certain the results were confirmed within the last few minutes. If not, click the ReScan button to get updated results.

• Google Webmasters Tools – remove the site from the blacklist.

Experience

Past experiences predict future experiences.  The next  of my LinkedIn Profile Tips is to add your latest experience. Include relevant experiences. As a new graduate, your experience as a leader in college suggests you have the ability to do the same in business. When possible, Link to your company or organization if it has a profile on LinkedIn. Experience with organizations help visitors show them you are well rounded. When you add positions in clubs and organizations, think about how it helps you on your profile. Keep in mind you are preparing your profile from a professional perspective.

Customize your LinkedIn URL, Websites and Twitter account

 And rounding off my LinkedIn Profile Tips is to customize your internet links. You can enter up to three website links.  Customize the label to meaningful information.  Add your Twitter account and create your personal LinkedIn URL. If you can be consistent with the name people will remember them more easily. Don’t forget to put that information on your business card.

When buyers want to know real estate market conditions and have only one voice to listen to, they don’t hear the whole story. That means someone needs to step forward to tell the story further. Why not you?

I was on a group forum the other evening. Jan wanted to know what everyone thought about what was going to happen in the 2012 real estate market.

Several chimed in and shared their frustrations about prospective buyers not really understanding local market conditions. The buyers heard the information on national news and expected the conditions to be the same in that city.

Writing a blog article will help you educate readers. As you write more, you earn the respect and trust of your readers.  You stand out in among the crowd. Be remarkable. Be a purple cow.

Several members responded consistently about real state market conditions being local.  Multiple articles written for multiple markets written by multiple writers will triangulate the knowledge the industry has that the public needs to know.

More than 78% of research is done on the internet. If the article was written for the newspaper, it is likely to be archived shortly after it is written minimizing its value. Readers outside your newspaper are not likely to see the article.

When the article is written on your blog, you benefit. And the benefit lasts as long as the article is on the internet. In other words, it becomes part of your Organic SEO program.  It’s Marketing Material.

Your domain name is your identity on the internet

Your domain name is your identity on the Internet.  Think of it as your company business card and home address in the internet.  When you obtain your domain name, no one else on earth has it:  www.youandonlyyou.com.  Type in that address and you show up in the visitor’s browser, no on else.

It is also about ownership.  It’s possible to use publicly available resources such as using a yahoo email address and a wordpress.com content and blog.  However, neither belongs to you.  If one day either shuts down like GeoCities did a few years ago, you are out of luck and all that work is gone. I had my own experience with mcimail. It was here today and gone tomorrow. If you are comfortable with it possibly vanishing one day, you have been warned.

Your domain name is your hub

When you have a domain name, you can consolidate and direct all your information to point to that one location.  As a real estate agent, you have some information on company’s site. Other information is located on activerain.com. Then more is located on your team site. Some is on Facebook. More is on LinkedIn.

Your domain builds credibility

When you have a professional looking website, you lend creditability to your business. You are taking your business seriously. When you have your own domain, you are showing your clients you are a well established company and you are there for the long run.

Your Domain Name is unique

When a domain is created, there will forever be only one. There may be similar ones, but they will not be exact.

How Does Your Domain Name Work?

The domain is connected to a numeric address called an IP address.  The IP address identifies the physical machine the domain is located.

When a certain website is called for, a service cal Domain Names Services (DNS) is summoned to convert the domain name into a numeric address.  Then the physical machine that is the website server is contacted.

The data requested is returned to the browser that requested the webpage.

If you decide to move your website to another server, only the numeric IP address is changed and the traffic is redirected to the new site.

Characteristics of a Domain Name

Now that you know why a domain is important to have, let’s examine a few characteristics of a good domain.

Easy to remember

A good domain name is easy to remember.  The best way is to use words.  You have no trouble remembering sears.com. But sears-inc.com might not be as easy to remember.  For example, if you happen to be known as bob the butcher, you may use something like butcherbob.com

Describes you

As I just showed you, I used easy to remember names. I also just happen to have shown you easy to remember names that described you.  A domain such as r2d2.com doesn’t mean much unless of course you actually are r2d2.

Avoid the use of digits and dashes as it is difficult to say.  For example, avoid bob-the-butcher-1.com as you need to read it as “bob dash the dash butcher dash one”

Branding

Are you a company that is easily branded?  Good examples are coke.com or Kleenex.com. No surprise figuring out what the site is all about.

Keyword Rich

As search engine optimization has become ever so important, the use of keywords in the domain has become very important.  Let’s say you want to be found when someone is looking for real estate in Fargo. A name such as fargorealestate.com is a perfect keyword rich domain and the search engines will like it.

Related benefits

Search Engine Relevance

As I explained above, search engine relevance is an excellent benefit to a good domain name. When found, your domain will be more relevant than a similar business that does not have a relevant.

Personalized email address

Using an email address with your domain name lends significant credibility to your. Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail email addresses are fine for personal stuff but it just have the same level of professionalism.

Portability

When you have your own domain, you can locate it just about anywhere you want.  You can even direct your traffic to free resources if you wish.  The site vanishes, just move it elsewhere. I would not recommend this though. The more appropriate way of using your domain name is to move it from one hosting site to another when you need more resources.
