HMAS Tarakan will visit her adopted city of Bowen, North Queensland this weekend.

During the port visit, the crew will conduct a Freedom of Entry parade and take part in Remembrance Day activities at the Bowen Cenotaph at 11am on the 11 November 2011.

Whitsunday locals are invited to line the streets at 1pm to witness the age-old ritual of Freedom of Entry, which was last carried out by Tarakan on 23 April 2004.

Tarakan’s crew will step off from Santa Barbara Parade, Bowen at 1pm on Saturday 12 November, before marching up Herbert Street and being symbolically challenged by Police Sergeant, Andrew Rickerby.

Navy's Fleet Air Arm Museum invites the public to celebrate the end of an era in naval aviation, with an open day featuring flying displays by 817 Squadron’s Sea King helicopters.

817 Squadron will be decommissioned in December 2011 so this is one of the last opportunities for the public to see the Sea King helicopter in flight.

The flying program will also include the Squirrel pairs display team, the Vietnam-era UH-1 Iroquois, an Air Force PC-9/A from the Roulettes display team and static displays of Seahawk and MRH-90 helicopters.

The Sea Kings are fondly regarded as the workhorse of the Navy’s Fleet Air Arm, having provided 36 years’ dedicated service. They have flown in excess of 60,000 hours in a range of operations, both at home and abroad. Following decommissioning a Sea King helicopter will be on permanent display in the museum.

The latest Aircrewmen trainees will be presented with their wings in a graduation ceremony at the Fleet Air Arm Museum on Thursday morning. Families, friends and colleagues have been invited to share this proud moment.

The Reviewing Officer will be Commander Fleet Air Arm, Commodore Peter Laver.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the 723 Squirrel Pairs Helicopter Display Team will showcase Naval Aviation skills.

Topics covered in the intensive and demanding nine-month course included Combat Survival, Air Traffic Control, Aviation Medicine, Meteorology and Helicopter Underwater Escape Training.
