Kate: Hello, I'm Kate Colin and today I'm joined by Jackie Dalton. Hi Jackie.
Jackie: Hi Kate
Kate: Jackie, I believe you've just got back from holiday haven't you. How was it?
Jackie: It was great thank you - I had a very relaxing time. I did lots of reading andsome skiing.
Kate: Sounds wonderful, but these days more and more of us are consideringwhether we can actually justify the cost of a holiday abroad and the idea ofgoing absolutely nowhere is actually becoming quite appealing. A 'staycation'is a new phrase which is combination of the expressions 'stay' (at home)' and'vacation'.
Jackie: Well, yes I have heard of staycations, but to be honest I can't say it is something that really appeals to me because I like going on holiday to seeother cultures, to listen to new languages and eat different food. Just to getaway from my normal day to day life once in a while. I think that's whatholidays are about.
Kate: Well to some people it is, but before we go any further, I'm going to ask myquestion for this week. Which country is the top European location for British people to go on holiday at the moment?

b) France
c) Turkey
Jackie: answers
Kate: Good answer; we'll check if you're correct in a few minutes. But first here’s alady who really likes staycations. Why does she prefer to stay at home?

If you take your 2 weeks off and just stay at home and do what you like, it's so much moreliberating than going away somewhere new and not having your own things around andhaving the pressure to explore all this new stuff. It's just a winner; I don’t understand whymore people don't do it.
Jackie: She said that staying at home is much more liberating than going away. Ifsomething is 'liberating' it makes you feel free and able to do what you like. Shegoes on to say that going on holiday means that you don't have your own thingsaround you and there's lots of pressure to explore. She says that staying at home isa 'winner' (which means a very good thing) and she can't understand why morepeople don't do it!
Kate: Now we're going to hear from someone with the opposite point of view. She usesthe phrase 'contradiction in terms' which means to say a combination of thingswhich don't make sense as they often have opposite meanings. She also uses theterm 'same old, same old' which you often hear when people talk about alwaysdoing the same thing. Listen out for it in the following extract…

Well to me, holidaying at home is a complete contradiction in terms. When you stay athome you know it's the same old, same old and it just underpins the whole beauty of havingthat energizing break and doing something entirely different.
Jackie: Well, she said that she thinks holidaying at home is a contradiction in terms –it doesn't make sense. She thinks that taking a holiday is about getting awayfrom your usual routine of being at home which she describes as 'the same old,same old'. I suppose she's referring to the everyday jobs of housework andshopping and things like that. She says this underpins the whole beauty ofgoing away. Underpins means to give strength or support to something, sohere the fact that there's always so much to do when you stay at home, supportsor underpins her argument that we need to go away on holiday once in a while.
Kate: Let's go back to the first lady we heard from. Here she gives some otherreasons why she prefers not to go away. She uses the term 'peace of mind'.What does this mean?
Jackie: 'peace of mind' is when you can relax because you don’t have to worry aboutanything.

On the rare occasions that I have gone on a proper holiday, the amount of work you have todo to go away and enjoy peace of mind, totally negates the benefit of the holiday to me.
Jackie: She says that all the effort you have to go to make sure you can enjoy peaceof mind, negates the benefit of the holiday. I suppose she means that shespends a lot of time making sure her house is locked properly and things tomake sure that she won't have to worry about anything going wrong whileshe's away. She says this negates the benefit of a holiday. To negate meansto cancel out the effect of something, so all the worry related to going onholiday negates the good things about holidays.
Kate: Let's hear what the second lady has to say in reply…she uses the word'anticipation'. What does this mean?
Jackie: 'anticipation' means to look forward to something. You'll also hear theexpression 'Groundhog Day'. In this context, this is a term which wesometimes use when referring to doing the same thing over and over again.It comes from a film called 'Groundhog Day' starring Bill Murray and AndieMacDowell, and the film features a man who finds himself living the same
day over and over again. Now the expression has made its way into theEnglish language to describe something which is the same everyday. So ifyou had a job where it seems you're doing the same thing day after day, youcould say it was like 'Groundhog Day'.

It's like anything in life you either approach it positively or negatively. I think part of thebeauty of a holiday is the anticipation. I know it's stressful preparing for a holiday but it'squite exciting too and I think we need it because when we do the same things day after day,life becomes like Groundhog Day and one of the great beauties underpinning that is to goon holiday.
Kate: What do you think Jackie? Are you tempted to have a 'staycation' next timeyou want a holiday?
Jackie: Well, having heard both sides of the argument, I can understand the reasonsfor staying at home but I'm afraid I like to travel too much and I don't thinkI'll be taking a staycation this year.
Kate: So let's have a look the words we came across earlier in the programme:

Producción de la voz. Fonación

Elemento esencial de la palabra es la corriente de aire espirado, el cual, sometido a diversas modificaciones vibratorias, produce la voz humana.

El aire espirado es recogido por los pulmones –a manera de fuelle-, pasa luego por los bronquios y la tráquea, hasta llegar a una especie de tubo sonoro, la laringe. En la parte superior de ésta hay dos pares de membranas elásticas, o cuerdas vocales: la abertura que dejan entre sí, cunado están abiertas, se llama glotis. Cuando respiramos en silencio, la glotis queda abierta; cuando, al respirar emitimos la voz, las cuerdas vocales juntan sus bordes y se cierra la glotis. Entonces, la presión del aire espirado vuelve a abrir la glotis haciendo vibrar las cuerdas vocales: tales vibraciones constituyen la voz.

Órganos, punto y modo de articulación

El aire que sale por la glotis –a causa de diversos contactos o estrechamientos- sufre modificaciones en la faringe, fosas nasales, lengua, labios o velo del paladar.

Tales modificaciones –características de cada fonema- reciben el nombre de articulación.

Punto de articulación es el lugar de la cavidad bucal donde se articula un sonido. Por el punto de articulación se clasifican los sonidos en:

Bilabiales… … … … … Producidos por aproximación o contacto de los labios entre sí: p, b, m.

Labiodentales… … … Por el labio inferior colocado contra los bordes de los incisivos superiores: f.

Interdentales… … … Por la punta de la lengua colocada contra los bordes de los incisivos superiores: z (ze, zi).

Dentales… … … … … Por la punta de la lengua contra la cara inferior de los incisivos superiores: t, d.

Alveolares… … … … Por la punta de la lengua contra los alvéolos de los incisivos superiores: n, l, r, rr, s.

Palatales… … … … … Por el predorso de la lengua contra el paladar duro: ll, ñ, y (ya, yo, yu), ch.

Velares… … … … … Por el predorso de la lengua contra el velo del paladar: g (ge, gi), i, k, q, c (ca, cu).

No es suficiente saber el lugar donde se articula un sonido. Es también necesario conocer la manera cómo se produce; es decir, el modo de su articulación.

Por el modo de articulación cabe establecer esta otra clasificación de los sonidos:

En primer término, hay que distinguir entre:

Vocales… … … … … cuando la columna de aire aspirado halla el libre paso a través de la boca.

y

Consonantes… … … Si la columna de aire espirado encuentra una estrechez mayor o un contacto de los órganos exteriores a la glotis (velo del paladar, lengua, paladar, dientes o labios).

Hola a todos,

Bienvenidos al 2008 y al proyecto de enseñanza de inglés NAZENPRO. Esperamos pronto volver a reunirnos con ustedes para hacer que este "projecto" siga su marcha hacia un crecimiento seguro, y por que no, "importante a nivel regional".

En estos momentos los miembros integrantes del NAZENPRO se encuentran en un receso académico, pero con ansias de volver a reunirse pronto y poner en práctica nuevas ideas y en ejecución la energía renovada durante estas vacaciones.

Eso es todo por ahora, nos vemos a la vuelta.

Hola,

Nos gustaría compartir con ustedes uno de nuestros secretos relacionados con el aprendizaje del inglés.

Para nosotros, los hablantes del castellano, a veces es un poco extraño producir algunos de los sonidos ingleses, debido a que algunos de éstos no existen en nuestra propia lengua, o son levemente distintos.

El problema con esto último es que, cuando los sonidos son levemente distintos, nunca nos damos cuenta de que los estamos diciendo mal.

Una de las formas que tienes para poder notar esa diferencia es, o haber nacido en un país donde todos hablan inglés, o tener al menos un conocimiento básico de los fenómenos fonéticos relacionados con la producción de dichos sonidos.

Bien, por esta última razón es que debemos tener un conocimiento básico acerca de la fonética de los sonidos, a fin de poder aprender bien el idioma. -Con respecto a esto último, el diléma es bastante simple y categórico: O estudias el idioma con la ayuda que te ofrece la perspectiva fonética, y lo haces bien (el aprender el idioma), o lo haces sin ella, y lo haces mal. Tu decides.-

Puede que ya hayas notado que la gran mayoría de los diccionarios, sobre todo los bilingües, incluyen, además del significado de la palabra que buscas, una transcripción fonética de la misma, escrita en unos símbolos raros que, por ahora, no puedes leer.

Tal vez te preguntes a qué nos refierimos con ésto; bueno, para empezar les diremos que, estos símbolos raros son parecidos a los que usas para escribir, o sea, como las letras del alfabeto.

Sin embargo, ocurre que algunas veces estos símbolos son, muy raros, y puede que nunca en tu vida los hayas visto antes; pues bien, cuando los símbolos son muy diferentes, es recomendable que alguien te guíe para aprender a cómo decirlos.

Ésto es precisamente una de nuestras metas en el Nazarene English Project, que logres decirlos por tu propia cuenta, de manera aceptable y bonita.

Pero recuerda, que como todas las actividades que emprendes desde cero, pasas de un nivel menos avanzado a otro más avanzado.

¿A qué nos referimos con ésto? Bien, con ésto queremos decir que es como cuando aprendes a andar en bicicleta; cuando empiezas, andas tembleque y puede que te caigas fuerte, o que tengas que usar rueditas, ja, ja... sí, "rueditas."

Recuerda, una vez que ya sabes andar en bici, nunca se te olvida; y si practicas harto, puedes llegar a andar hasta sin manos, y lo que es más importante aún, sin rueditas.

Así que, mientras más practicas lo que ves en clases los sábados de 3 a 6 en el Nazarene English Project, más pronto vas a poder andar sin rueditas en el inglés.

La base teórica que usamos en el Nazarene English Project con respecto a la fonética, y que te enseñamos cada sábado, esta basada en el modo de hablar estándar de los habitantes de Inglaterra, principalmente los del área metropolitana de Londres.

Este modo de hablar o, acento, recive el nombre de RP, Received Pronunciation, o simplemente, BBC English. Este último nombre se debe a que la mayoría de los presentadores de noticias de la BBC, British Broadcasting Company, lo usan.

Bienvenidos al Nazarene English Project

Estimado Asistente,

Es de nuestro más sincero agrado encontrarte aquí, así como lo es también encontrarte en nuestro lugar de reunión, cada sábado de 3 a 6 de la tarde, en clases de inglés.

Hemos publicado este blog para hacer que todos experimentemos una forma diferente de mantenernos en contacto y para tratar de sacar el máximo de provecho de nuestra experiencia de intercambio, en el proyecto.

Somos un grupo de jóvenes amigos en busca del enriquecimiento a través del enseñar. Para la mayoría de nosotros en este grupo ésta es nuestra primera experiencia de este tipo, y debido a ese hecho es que estamos completamente esperanzados de que esto resultará maravillosamente bien.

Esto no sería posible sin tu intención y disposición por dominar un segundo idioma, como el inglés.

¿Quienes somos en el Nazarene English Project?

Los responsables de entregar instrucción, o clases de inglés, en el Nazarene English Project, NAZENPRO, son:

- María Méndez, hablante nativa del inglés, proveniente de Long Island, Nueva York, en EE.UU., quien posée experiencia de primera fuente en el uso actual del idioma inglés; debido a que es una hablante nativa, sabe mejor como usarlo, con un genial acento newyorkino.

- Angélica Fuentealba, estudiante universitaria, actualmente cursando tercer año de Pedagogía en Inglés en la Universidad de Playa Ancha, cuyo entrenamiento profesional nos entrega la orientación necesaria en el campo de la pedagogía.

- Juan Manosalva, estudiante universitario que cursa quinto año de Traducción e Interpretación Inglés – Español, en la Universidad de Playa Ancha, cuya experiencia como Asistente de Fonética Correctiva del Inglés, Ad-Honorem, del Departamento de Idiomas de dicha institución, nos entrega valiosa experiencia en la correcta adquisición del idioma.

- Priscila Gómez, estudiante universitaria que cursa la carrera de Traducción e Interpretación Inglés – Español en la Universidad de Playa Ancha y cuya experiencia y formación universitaria le entrega las herramientas necesarias para ser quien mejor les pueda ayudar durante vuestra adquisición del idioma inglés.
