Earthquake Felt in Nazareth

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Virginia this afternoon sending shock waves felt from North Carolina thru New York including the Lehigh Valley.

The earthquake hit Virginia a little before 2PM with the shock wave reaching this area shortly after 2PM. Social Media explodes with reports of surprised residents throughout the area feeling that unfamiliar rumbling under their feet.

Walmart Cashier Steals $4500 from Lower Nazareth Store

A cashier at the Walmrt Supercenter in Lower Nazareth Twp has been accused of stealing over $4,500. According to police Shelly Lee Baker, 51, of Easton, PA performed various false returns and transactions over the period of six months starting in January of this year at the Tire Center which was the department where she worked.

Baker has been charged with theft by deception and is currently being held at Northampton County Prison. Read the full story here

Nazareth Man Charged in $450k Heroin Ring

A Nazareth man has been charged for his involvement in a $450,000 heroin ring. Keith Eutsey, 35, is one of four men that have been indicted by a NJ Grand Jury for his involvement in the multi-state drug ring. The ring was said to have operated between December 2009 and March 2010 bringing heroin from NJ to Monroeville, PA. In total 18 people have been charged for being involved and over $450,000 and 7 kilos of heroin have been confiscated.

Eutsey has been charged with conspiracy to distribute heroin and possession of heroin with intent to distribute. If convicted he faces life in prison and a $10 million fine. Read the full story here.

Nazareth Man Allegedly Hits Ex-Girlfriend

Omar Saavedra, 23, has been charged after allegedly hitting his ex girlfriend while she held their child. While traveling on Nazareth Pike Saavedra asked his ex girlfriend Gilary Correa, for his rings back. She proceeded to take one off and throw it out the window. Saavedra searched but was unable to find that ring. That’s when he allegedly pulled her hair and proceeded to hit her face and hold her against the door.

Saavedra has been charged with simple assault and harassment and has been ordered to stay away from Correa. Read the full story here.

2011 Nazareth Graduate To Sit On School Board

Jacob Allen, 18, and a 2011 graduate of Nazareth High School has been unanimously appointed to fill a vacant seat in the Nazareth Area School Board. Allen was the only person to express interest after John Marino vacated he seat after moving out of the area required by his seat.

Allen has attended every school board meeting since he was freshman and is excited to get involved. He plans to hold the seat until the fall at which time the seat will be up for general election. Allen opposes the position of the board to not restore the Drivers Education Program that was cut by the board earlier this year.

Nazareth School Board Rejects Drivers Ed Proposal

The Nazareth School Board has unanimously voted to reject the proposal to restore the driver’s education program that was cut due to budget concerns.

Last month Superintendent Lesky proposed retoring one of the two positions previously used for the program but since the teachers union wouldnt agree to salary freezes or other cost saving measures the board wouldnt approve the $62,500 needed for the program.

The program had been very popular with both students and parents. There were an estimated 350 students enrolled in the 2010/11 school year. Parents enjoyed the benefits in most cases of the 10% insurance savings that most companies provide upon completing the course until he age of 21.

Drug Bust At Burger King in Lower Nazareth Twp

The Northampton County Drug Task Force has released details of a bust that occurred in the Burger King parking lot in Lower Nazareth Twp. The bust took place on the eventing of 6/20/2011 when an informant was sold a 1/4 ounce of marijuana by Benjamin Donello of Bushkill Twp.

Donlleo, 19, proceeded to drive off with 19 year old Joel Sanchez of Lower Nazareth before Colonial Regional police pulled the men over. A search of the vehchle turned up $2, 400 in cash over 35 grams of assorted drugs, and paraphernalia.

Donello and Sanchez have been charged with possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance, delivery of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance.

Nazareth Man Accused of Stealing From American Hotel

Cory Lee Murphy, 30, has been accused of breaking into the bar in the American Hotel where is he also a tenant and stealing liquor and causing various damage. Police arrived Saturday morning responding to the burglary report. They found signs of forced entry and bottles scattered throughout the bar and kitchen area.

Video surveillance showed a man that bar employees recognized as Murphy from a unique shirt he wore while at the bar the night before. When police went upstairs to talk to Murphy them found him wearing the same shirt from the video along with serval bottles of liquor sitting on his dresser.

Murphy admitted to police that he broke into the bar and stole the alcohol because he was upset with the owner of the hotel. He is being charged with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief, and has been sent to Northampton County Jail on $50,000 bail. The lesson here boys and girls is that you should at least change your shirt if you plan on allegedly stealing from the place that you live and frequent! Read the full story here.

Voters Say No to Gracedale Sale

Voters turned out Tuesday and handily denied the sale of Gracedale by a 72% to 28% margin. The landslide was carried on the back of a campaign by families of the residents as well as union employees to keep the facility under county control for at least the next 5 years.

The decision doesn’t come without its own set of consequences however. In anticipation of receiving approval the county only budgeted 6 months worth of operating expenses so now they have the immediate task of allocating funds through the rest of the year. Berks Man Charged With Road Rage Incident in Lower Nazareth Twp

A Berks Country man is in some hot water after allegedly being involved in a road rage incident in Lower Nazareth Twp. Joseph E. Bringhurst, 50, was traveling on Rt 191 in near Newburg Rd when he claims another male driver cut him off. This is of course where the got interesting.

According to the male driver Bringhurst got out of his truck and proceed to punch the unnamed male driver in the nose breaking his nose. He fled the scene but the victim was able to get his license plate number. Bringhurst has been charged with simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct. Read the full story via the ET here.
