The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Würger ("shrike"), also called Butcher-bird, was a single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft of Germany's Luftwaffe, and one of the best fighters of its generation. Used extensively during the Second World War, over 20,000 were manufactured, including around 6,000 fighter-bomber models. Production ran from 1941 to the end of hostilities, during which time the aircraft was continually updated. Its later versions retained qualitative parity with Allied fighter planes, but Germany was not able to produce the aircraft in enough numbers to affect the outcome of the war.

The Fw 190 was well liked by its pilots, and was quickly proven to be superior to the RAF's main front line fighter, the Spitfire Mk. V, on its combat debut in 1941.[1][2] Compared to the Bf 109, the Fw 190 was a "workhorse", employed in and proved suitable for a wide variety of roles, including ground attack, night fighter-bomber, long-range bomber escort, night-fighter and high-altitude interceptor.

Panzer IV

Panzer IV is the common name of a medium tank that was developed in the late 1930s by Germany and used extensively in World War II. It was initially designed as an infantry-support medium tank, to work in conjunction with the Panzer III which was intended to engage enemy armor. Later in the war it was up-gunned and up-armored and took over the tank-fighting role while Panzer IIIs were either put into infantry support duties or converted into other vehicles. The Panzer IV was the most common German tank of World War II, and was used as the base for many other fighting vehicles, such as tank destroyers and self-propelled anti-aircraft guns. The Panzer IV has the distinction of being the only German tank to remain in continuous production throughout all of World War II, with over 9,000 produced from 1939 to 1945.

The schwarz-weiß-rot (black-white-red) German imperial flag was adopted by the North German Confederation in 1867, as a combination of the black-white of Prussia and the red-white of the Hanseatic League and/or of Brandenburg. In 1871 it was adopted as merchant flag for the German Empire, and in 1892 promoted to national flag.

The symbols of Imperial Germany became symbols of conservative protest and were often used by nationalist organisations (e.g. Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten). This included the Reichskriegflagge (war flag of the Reich), which has been revived in the present for similar use. Many right-wing political parties during the Weimar period — such as the DNVP and the Nazi Party — used the imperial colours, a practice that has continued today with the NPD.

The Wasserfall Ferngelenkte Flakrakete (German for Waterfall Remote-Controlled A-A Rocket, also known as Aggregat 5) was a World War II guided surface-to-air missile developed at Peenemünde, Germany. One of the German Wunderwaffen, the Wasserfall design was used as a basis for both the American Hermes-A1 missile and a Soviet research programme under the codename R-101 after World War II.

Guidance was to be a simple radio control MCLOS, Manual Command to Line Of Sight, system for use against daytime targets, but for night-time use a new system known as Rheinland was under development. Rheinland used a transponder in the missile for locating it in flight (as read by a RDF, radio direction finder, on the ground) and a radar unit for tracking the target. A simple mechanical computer guided the missile into the tracking radar beam as soon as possible after launch, using the transponder and RDF to locate it, at which point the operator could see both "blips" on a single display, and guide the missile onto the target as during the day. Steering during the launch phase was accomplished by four graphite rudders placed in the muzzle of the combustion chamber, and (once high airspeeds had been attained) by the four air rudders mounted on the rocket tail.

Sino-German cooperation during the 1920s and 1930s refers to the cooperation between China and Germany. The cooperation was instrumental in modernizing the industry and the armed forces of the Republic of China. Intense cooperation lasted only from the Nazi takeover of Germany in 1933 to the start of the war with Japan in 1937.

Hitler during WW I

When Germany entered World War I in August 1914, Hitler petitioned King Ludwig III of Bavaria for permission to serve in a Bavarian regiment. This request was granted, and Adolf Hitler enlisted in the Bavarian army.

Hitler served in France and Belgium as a runner for the 16th Bavarian Reserve Regiment , which exposed him to enemy fire. He also drew cartoons and instructional drawings for the army newspaper.

Hitler was twice decorated for bravery. He received the Iron Cross, Second Class, in 1914 and the Iron Cross, First Class, in 1918, an honour rarely given to a Gefreiter (lance corporal). However, he was never promoted to Unteroffizier (non-commissioned officer). His duties at regimental headquarters, while often dangerous, gave Hitler time to pursue his artwork. In 1916, Hitler was wounded in the leg but returned to the front in March 1917. He received the Wound Badge later that year.

On October 15, 1918, Hitler was admitted to a field hospital, temporarily blinded by a mustard gas attack. Hitler said it was during this experience that he became convinced the purpose of his life was to "save Germany."

Hitler had long admired Germany, and during the war he had become a passionate German patriot, although he did not become a German citizen until 1932. He was shocked by Germany's capitulation in November 1918 even while the German army still held enemy territory. Like many other German nationalists, Hitler believed in the Dolchstoßlegende ("dagger-stab legend") which claimed that the army, "undefeated in the field", had been "stabbed in the back" by civilian leaders and Marxists back on the home front. These politicians were later dubbed the November Criminals.

In January 18, 1919, the Paris Peace Conference was held in Versailles. During the Peace Conference the Treaty of Versailles was negotiated and signed on June 28, 1919, in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles near Paris. By the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was required to abolish compulsory military service; to reduce its army to 100,000; to demilitarize all the territory on the left bank of the Rhine River and also that on the right bank to a depth of 50 km (31 mi); to stop all importation, exportation, and nearly all production of war material; to limit its navy to 24 ships, with no submarines, the naval personnel not to exceed 15,000; and to abandon all military and naval aviation by October 1, 1919. With the rise of the Nazi regime, Germany denounced the disarmament clauses of the Versailles Treaty, created a new air force, reintroduced conscription, and remilitarized the Rhineland.

Nürnberg, city in south central Germany, on the Pegnitz River, in Bavaria. This city is a crucial and essential part of the National Socialist history for it witnessed its rise and fall. During the 1920's, Nürnberg was an NSDAP stronghold; in 1927, the first Nazi rally was held there and From 1933 to 1938, it was the site of annual conventions of the NSDAP. During World War II (1939-1945), the city was a major center for producing military equipment. After the war Nürnberg was a site of trials, a.k.a. the Nürnberg trials, where most of the surviving Nazi leaders got death or life imprisonment sentences.

Horten Ho-IX

The Horten Ho-IX was a late-World War II prototype flying wing fighter/bomber, designed by Reimar and Walter Horten and built by Gothaer Waggonfabrik. The flying wing layout, a wing-only configuration, removes any "unneeded" surfaces and leads to the lowest possible drag.
In 1943, Reichsmarschall Göring issued a request for design proposals to produce a bomber that was capable of carrying a 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) load over 1,000 km (620 mi) at 1,000 km/h (620 mph); the so called 3X1000 project. The Hortens felt that the low-drag flying wing design could meet all of the goals. They put forward their private (and jealously guarded) project, the Ho IX, as the basis for the bomber.
The Government Air Ministry (Reichsluftfahrtministerium) approved the Horten proposal. The first Ho IX V1, which was an unpowered glider, flew on 1 March 1944. It was followed in December 1944 by the Jumo 004-powered Ho IX V2. Göring believed in the design and ordered a production series of 40 aircraft at Gotha with the RLM designation Ho 229 before it had taken to the air under jet power. On 12 March 1945, Ho 229 was included into the Jäger-Notprogramm for accelerated production of inexpensive "wonder weapons."
During the final stages of the war, the US military initiated Operation Paperclip which was an effort by the various intelligence agencies to capture advanced German weapons research, and to deny that research to advancing Soviet troops. A Horten glider and the Ho 229 V3, which was undergoing final assembly, were secured and sent to Northrop Corporation in the United States for evaluation.

Jagdpanzer IV

The Jagdpanzer IV was a tank destroyer based on the Panzer IV chassis. It was developed as a replacement for the Stug III. Jagdpanzer IV served in the anti-tank sections of Panzer and SS Panzer divisions. They fought in Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and on the Eastern Front and were very successful tank destroyers. One of the more notable Jagdpanzer IV aces was SS-Oberscharführer Roy from the 12th SS Panzerjäger Abteilung of 12th SS Panzer Division. He accounted for 36 confirmed tank kills with his Jagdpanzer IV since the invasion of Normandy. On the whole, the Jagdpanzer concept was considered a success; after the war, West Germany continued it with the Kanonenjagdpanzer.
