      <title>Mercury – a hazard in the oceans and on the land</title>
      <link>http://mining.ubc.ca/news.php</link>
      <description>
         Mercury vapour enters the body through the air. It destroys kidneys, brain and eyes. Symptoms include loss of teeth and neurological problems which leads to death. Methyl mercury accumulates in fish and passes up the food chain. It is found in high levels in the top carnivores, the larger older fish. Mercury is used by artisanal miners to extract gold. The mercury is removed from the gold as a vapour contaminating miners and those close by. In Colombia, high mercury vapour can be found in dense urban areas. Mercury is also a by-product of burning coal for electricity and is found around power stations. Mercury is used in the new compact fluorescent light bulbs and too often these are just dumped when they no longer work.Dr. Marcello Veiga of the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering joins us to discuss the issues surrounding Mercury.See the full article: www.abc.net.au (LNK)

However, the uses for human "needs" versus human "wants" have come under increasing scrutiny. What should be our ethical compass in evaluating mineral projects in terms of their impacts, particularly among indigenous peoples? This lecture will be based on Dr. Ali's notable book "Treasures of the Earth: Need, Greed and a Sustainable Future" which has been profiled in Forbes magazine and received cover endorsements by two Nobel laureates.Further details about the book are at: http://www.treasurebook.infoSaleem H. Ali is Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of Vermont's Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources and the Director of the Institute for Environmental Diplomacy and Security at UVM's James Jeffords Center for Policy Research. He is also on the adjunct faculty of Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies and the visiting faculty for the United Nations mandated University for Peace (Costa Rica).

Even though treaties are in place - the Douglas Treaties, Treaty 8, the Nisga'a, Tswwassen First Nation and Maa-nulth First Nations Treaties - of those only some of these treaties contemplate mineral titles. Don Ryan will discuss the developments between First Nations communities, private industry and the government, including how the Stk'emlupsemc Communities of T'kemlups and Skeetchestn have negotiated employment and contracting opportunities and revenue sharing opportunities with New Gold Inc., created an Environmental Monitoring Board to foster on-going dialogue between New Gold Inc., the T'kemlups and Skeetchestn, and the Ministry of Natural Resources; and revenue sharing through a percentage of royalties with British Columbia. Foundational to the agreements reached are respect for First Nations processes and culture.Don B. Ryan is Gitxsan from the Wilp of Hanamuxw, served as Executive Director of the Gitxsan Hereditary Chief's Office from 1978 until 1997. Under leadership of the Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs, he was instrumental in forwarding the landmark Aboriginal Title Case, Delgam'Uukw from the trial in 1988 until the Supreme Court Decision in 1997. Chilean Raffle Results!!Dear UBC Community and Mining Engineering Department, The Chilean Students at UBC would like to thank all of those who had contributed to our fund raising campaign during this last week. We would also like to thank all of those who have contributed anonymously to institutions helping our country during this difficult moment. With your help we have raised 1.811 CAD, enough money to build temporary housing for AT LEAST two families among those 2.5 million people that currently have no place to live. We are sure that for those families this means more than anything in the world. For those who weren’t able to contribute during this first stage, do not worry, we will do other events in the near future. We still have some fantastic bottles of Chilean wine so we may do another raffle!! There is still much more to do, so the invitation is open to keep helping our country recover from this devastating event. You can find information on how to help at: http://www.chilevancouver.com/47.html or in the Facebook group: eightpointeight - Earthquake Relief Effort For Chile. The raffle was a complete success. A total of 16 bottles of Chilean wine were raffled and the lucky winners are listed in the table below. <title>Mining in Aboriginal Communities</title>
      <link>http://mining.ubc.ca/news.php</link>
      <description>
         Mining in Aboriginal CommunitiesMarch 11th &amp; 12th, 2009 in Vancouver, BCThere are more than 120 agreements in Canada between Aboriginal groups and mining companies, yet there are still significant flaws in the process.Our current market only creates more uncertainty. We continue to struggle in an attempt to incorporate rulings on Aboriginal title and rights into mining law and practices in a way that generates economic development while respecting the environmental and cultural values of communities. The desire to develop mines and communities is strong, but all partners – communities, industry, and provincial, federal and First Nations’ governments – who play a key role in the development and success of benefit agreements, need to be informed and engaged in the process.This two day event will discuss the social, environmental, legal, financial and practical issues at play. Ultimately, the issue to be addressed in our final panel is: How do we determine the amount of accommodation? What should an accommodation agreement in 2009 look like?Issues to be Addressed:• What does the provincial government’s announcement on revenue sharing really mean for Aboriginal communities?• Best practices for negotiating agreements with First Nations• Strategies for creating mutually beneficial relationships • The social and environmental impacts of mining for communities• Methods of reducing the impact of mining on cultural values• Practical advice and diverse perspectives on environmental assessments• Issues pertaining to below ground rights and title• A primer on the economics of mining• Strategic considerations related to IBAs/Accommodation agreements in BC• Key principles and updates on consultation and accommodation in the mining context• Lessons learned from other jurisdictions: The Ontario, Quebec, Voisey Bay and Yukon Experiences• Setting the amount of accommodationo How do you determine value?o How much is enough?o What should an accommodation agreement in 2009 look like?Youth Sponsorship ProgramWe are pleased to offer our successful sponsorship program for First Nation, Métis and Inuit youth to attend conferences offered by the Pacific Business &amp; Law Institute. By gathering information about what types of opportunities graduates are pursuing, and surveying them directly about what the graduates value, the industry benefits from better recruitment and retainment. Students also benefit by hearing directly what skills and traits the industry value; allowing them to seek opportunities prior to graduation that allow them to develop these characteristics.Download the Powerpoint Presentation by NBK Student Michael Fuller (2.2 MB)

      <description>
           The Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at UBC will have the honour of being the hosts of the 18th Annual Canadian Mining Games competition, to be held in February of 2008. By the overwhelming request of the mining industry and western companies in particular, one of the two western mining schools was encouraged to host the games. The students at UBC stepped up and accepted the challenge. It will be a busy time for undergraduate students at the NBK Institute as they will not only have to prepare and plan the games but also be able to train and compete. Thanks to incredible industry support, various companies have already donated funding to UBC students for next year. A planning committee will be formed within the next few months to begin the large fundraising drive needed to support the games and next year’s competitors. Hosting the games in Vancouver next year will be of incredible benefit to all those involved as it will bring both western and eastern talent together in one of the hottest regions of the mineral industry. It will also give the newly formed NBK Institute a change to show off its expertise and professionalism in its home element.

It was an exciting time for all as each student competed in several different categories ranging from mineral identification to mining economics. The team, made up of students from various years and levels of experience, was formed in October of last year and has been busy fundraising and preparing for the games. The Annual Mining games is an incredible opportunity for students to meet and network with their future peers from nine other mining schools across the country.
