Buffalo Tavern Bed and Breakfast

Through the years this outstanding home has been in the glare of publicity.

The history begins in 1851 when George Washington Ray purchased 500 acres of land from the State of North Carolina. It is said, this land was purchased for five cents an acre and from the land came the timber that George Washington Ray (better known as Wash Ray) constructed one of the most magnificent Ashe County Homes of its time.

The brick for the seven fireplaces were handmade at the construction site. George Washington Ray was also known as a renowned furniture maker. Using his craftsman skills, many details went into the home, which later became conversational pieces such as a carved champagne glass on the entryway staircase. It is also said, this home was the first in Ashe County to have stained glass windows. The home was completed in 1871 as his personal residence.

In the early 1880's, Buffalo Road became the major route between Tennessee and Jefferson, North Carolina. At that time there was a need for lodging, and Wash Ray, being the entrepreneur that he was offered his personal residence for lodging as well as a tavern. From that day forth, the home became known as Buffalo Tavern.

We are told, two North Carolina Governors found their way to the well known Buffalo Tavern to spend the night and partake of the homemade spirits made by Wash Ray and his wife. The wife was in charge of the large vineyard which provided some of the best wines around, while the servants tended the cornfields providing excellent corn liquor. The tavern remained open and was in full operation during prohibition. As time passed and the depression came, people did not travel the route to Tennessee as they once did and finally he and his wife closed the tavern.

In 2006 another entrepreneur, Brian "Doc" Adams, arrived in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Doc had recently retired from 30 years in education and was seeking an area for retirement and a new endeavor. The first look at the home, Doc fell in love with the history and the possibilities. After extensive renovations, Doc Adams reopened Buffalo Tavern as a Bed and Breakfast. Buffalo Tavern once again became known as a unique place to stay while visiting the North Carolina Mountains.

Just recently, Doc Adams reluctantly made a decision to sell this successful ongoing bed and breakfast. The business and residence is offered for sale by Jerrita Roark, Ashe High Country Realty in West Jefferson, North Carolina.

The guest who stay at the Bed and Breakfast enjoy Doc's company and find Buffalo Tavern an interesting place to stay. A place with so much history; the original menu from the tavern when it was in full operation in the 1800's is displayed in the entryway of the Bed and Breakfast, not to mention enjoying today's menu of one of the best gourmet breakfasts in North Carolina.

Doc tells us, he plans to write a book on his experiences as an innkeeper and the many new found friends who were his guest at the famous Buffalo Tavern located on Buffalo Road in West Jefferson, North Carolina.

The Best Kept Secret in North Carolina!

There is a place in the North Carolina Mountains that is unknown to most. Only the people who live there and the people who are fortunate enough to visit know of this unique log home community called Stonebridge.

Stonebridge is located on one of the highest mountains in Ashe County, North Carolina in the Todd Community with elevations 4,200 feet and over.

To find Stonebridge, one must leave the paved highways and drop onto a wooded private lane canopied with trees, fringed with wildflowers and lined with aged old split rail fences. It is here that the developers of Stonebridge brought old logs gathered from around the country to this mountain to create a haven for people who value the homespun traditions of the North Carolina Mountains.

The homes in Stonebridge are constructed from reclaimed logs, some of them twenty-four to twenty-six inches wide. Each home has at least one dry-laid stone fireplace (some of the larger homes have three and four) wood floors, wood shake roofs, stone foundations, covered porches and decks. The homes are scattered over approximately 400-acres of pristine forests filled with native hardwoods, conifers and wild fern. Throughout the mountain, crystal clear waters flow from natural springs forming small rushing streams and waterfalls. The developers placed stone bridges over these streams allowing them flow naturally, undisturbed. From the ridges, long-range views of the surrounding mountains are breathtaking and on clear days you can see 100 miles or more.

Late at night when the quietness is all around you, it is easy to understand what brought people to the mountain.
