<br />Event Description: Learning and sharing will permeate the room at the EAC–NCR branch meeting on Wednesday, May 16. The evening will kick off with a panel of experienced editors sharing what they’ve learned in their careers, and will wrap up with a town hall discussion during which all members will be encouraged to share what they’d like to get from their branch in the future.

With such a packed evening, we’re starting earlier than usual. The speakers’ panel will run from 7:00–7:45 p.m. After a short break, we’ll jump into the town hall from 8:00–8:45 p.m. For more details, read on.

7:00 – 7:45 p.m.: Things I wish I’d known when I was starting out . . .

All editors have things they wish they’d learned sooner, and things they’re happy they got right the first time. This will be a highly interactive exchange of wisdom. The panel at the front of the room—with federal government, freelance, and NGO experience—will lead off, but we’ll encourage everybody to share their stories.

Our panel will include the following people:

•	Jennifer Latham is Director of Editorial Services at the Office of the Auditor General of Canada, a past NCR branch chair, and past EAC president.
•	Elizabeth Macfie, president of Elizabeth Macfie Editing and Indexing, is an editor, proofreader, and teacher. She is a past chair of the EAC–NCR branch and past member of the EAC national council.
•	Lorie Boucher is Manager of Communications, National Programs, at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). Before joining FCM six years ago, Lorie was Director, Corporate Communications, and Manager, Creative Services at Niva, Inc.
The panel has decades of experience and much to offer, but we’re equally excited about the wisdom that will be shared from the floor.

8:00 – 8:45 p.m.: Editing EAC–NCR: Bring your red pencil

Keeping EAC–NCR fresh and relevant for its members is essential to its survival. So, stay for the second half of the May meeting where members will be asked: What do you want from your NCR branch? What can the branch do better or differently? Think about all the services offered by the branch and what can be improved.

Bring your red pencil and join in this facilitated discussion about the future direction of your branch. And don’t forget to bring your business card as we’re offering a fabulous door prize—a half-day EAC–NCR professional development seminar during the 2012–2013 season!

So, join us—you won’t want to miss this exciting and informative evening!<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NcrBranchEvents/~4/QAE3XeD9aTM" height="1" width="1"/>

NCR Speaker Nights- 7:30 - 9:30 pm ET

When: Wed Apr 18, 2012<br>Replaces event originally scheduled for: Wed Apr 18, 2012<br>

Presentation: EAC-NCR is providing insights about editing from the authors point of view!

Come learn what accomplished writers have to say about the process of editing - from their perspective. “A good editor is the best thing that can happen to a writer” claims guest speaker, Rick Taylor, Carleton university writing instructor, novelist, and author of a collection of short stories, many feature magazine articles, and travel memoir House Inside the Waves.

Other Speakers’ Night guests include engaging educator, Caroline Pignat, Governor Generalʼs Award winning novelist of the highly acclaimed Greener Grass, Wild Geese, and Timber Wolf, deemed “historical fiction at its best” (Canadian Children’s Book News). Caroline&#39;s freelance work appears in numerous publications for children, teens and adults.

And, Peggy Blair, lawyer, realtor, and successful mystery writer of The Beggar’s Opera, shortlisted (2010) for the prestigious Debut Dagger Award of the (UK) Crime Writers Association, and author of the non-fiction book Lament for a First Nation.

Do not miss this exciting opportunity to hear from experienced professionals who depend on our skills as editors! A Question and Answer period will follow our panel presentation.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NcrBranchEvents/~4/NxRGKtojLqM" height="1" width="1"/>

EAC Pre-conference workshops - 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

When: Fri Jun 1, 2012<br>

<br />Event Description: “The global push to make the web accessible: what the new laws on web accessibility mean for editors” will be the topic of an upcoming presentation by David Berman for EAC-NCR. Berman, a graphic designer, strategist, web designer and plain language advocate, is a consultant to the United Nations, governments, businesses and nonprofit organizations.

The world is moving to make websites accessible. It will soon be law for websites on servers in many places. Websites of governments, organizations and businesses in Ontario must soon be accessible to those with visual, hearing or other disabilities. A set of rolling deadlines for different sectors started on January 1, 2012, under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The Canadian government has started down the same path with a similar standard.

“In Ottawa, the biggest opportunity may also lie for many in the new federal government standards for accessibility which are similar to those of the Ontario government,” Berman said.

Editors can play a key role in making this happen. How? Come to the EAC-NCR meeting on March 21 and find out!

The location is the Laurier Room of the Capital Hill Hotel and Suites, 88 Albert Street at Metcalfe in Ottawa. Come at 7:00 p.m. to socialize or 7:30 to hear the presentation. Admission is free to members of Editors’ Association of Canada, National Capital Region and $10 for non-members. The meeting is co-sponsored by David Berman Communications.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NcrBranchEvents/~4/hlXgSHgxYyk" height="1" width="1"/>

NCR Branch Seminars - Writing &amp; Editing for the Web - SOLD OUT

When: Fri Jan 20, 2012<br>

The Internet could well be considered the largest publishing house on Earth, and online communication is fast becoming a key component of many jobs across a variety of industries. Unfortunately, the rules of web writing are different than those of print, so even experienced writers and editors can find themselves at a loss when faced with Web copy, to say nothing of those who were not professional communicators in the first place. This seminar will address the differences between print and Web copy and provide tips and techniques for writing and editing content appropriate for a number of online delivery platforms, including corporate or organizational websites, blogs, social media tools, and e-commerce sites.

Discussion will focus on:

- print vs. Web copy: the differences in how and why we read;
- text vs. hypertext: site architecture and linking;
- Web words: search engine optimization (SEO) and language level;
- Web design: scanability, graphic design, and interactivity;
- Web 2.0: user experience and community building;
- social media: the art of inbound marketing; and
- copyright in cyberspace: duplicate content, plagiarism, and other legal issues Technical
- tidbits: content management systems, basic HTML, etc.

Not just for writers and editors, Writing &amp; Editing for the Web provides insights and direction for marketers, executives, bloggers, and anyone who uses or hopes to use the Internet to convey a message. In-depth discussion, hands-on exercises, and extensive handouts ensure that participants leave with a keen understanding of the online market and the techniques for communicating effectively via the Web.

<br />Event Description: At EAC Ottawa’s January meeting, digital public affairs strategist Mark Blevis will address a vital question: what do we as editors need to know about social media? Mark will focus on the strategic value of social media for networking, research and marketing.

You don’t tweet and you don’t have a clear grasp of how Facebook, Linked-In or YouTube work? Mark’s presentation will be preceded by a nuts-and-bolts discussion and demonstration of a range of social media tools.

This workshop will be presented by web content professional and EAC member Murray Rob Roy McGregor.Murray’s workshop and Mark’s presentation should help participants find answers to some important who-what-when-how-why questions about social media. Especially why.

• Leo Paoletti, user Manager, User Education at Kinaxis Inc. and former documentation manger at Entrust and Corel and member of EAC

Participants will leave the session with a sense of what experience and skills are needed to specialize as an editor and what the market is like in the private sector for editors, writers and user educators. They will also see how that market has shifted among the information skills and services that employers are looking for today.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NcrBranchEvents/~4/HKnzK_k2w-E" height="1" width="1"/>

NCR Branch Seminars - From Concept to Completion: Managing the Publication Process

When: Mon Nov 28, 2011<br>

Prerequisite: EAC-NCR’s Introduction to Copy Editing seminar or equivalent knowledge.

Copy editors often find themselves needing to make editorial and process decisions—the English language allows a variety of ways to edit every text, and client needs vary from project to project. Copy editors also can offer extra value through their wide knowledge of language and content, as well as their skill with electronic editing tools.

In this seminar, participants will practise on a variety of documents and learn tips and tricks from two experienced copy editors. Content includes when and how to make decisions on handling a document, value add-ons (such as creating a style sheet, fact checking, and formatting), and a variety of advanced techniques.

Please note: Because this hands-on seminar focuses on electronic editing, participants are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop computer equipped with MS Word 2000 or newer. Sample documents for exercises will be emailed to participants several days before the seminar.

Instructor: Moira Rayner White

This workshop is meant for both novice editors and those who want to improve their writing. You will learn basic techniques for improving text and the types of errors and difficulties typically found in everyday writing.

The instructors will introduce participants to some of the perennial problem topics that copy editors face. For example:

- Spelling: Determining capitalization and hyphenation; forming compounds; choosing American, British, or Canadian variants.
- Grammar: Ensuring subject–verb and pronoun–antecedent agreement; avoiding dangling or misplaced modifiers; maintaining parallel structure.
- Punctuation: Clarifying meaning; dealing with hyphen and dash difficulties; determining whether punctuation goes inside or outside quotation marks.
- Word usage: Sidestepping commonly misused words; avoiding noun strings; eliminating redundancies.
- Mechanics of style: Using or creating a style sheet to maintain consistency; dealing with abbreviations, acronyms, and initialisms; knowing when to italicize.

We’ve all flipped a sentence around, or dismantled it and then recombined it, only to discover better clarity, emphasis, or flow. Why does that happen, and how can we become more adept at manipulating word order—or syntax—to improve prose? This seminar looks at syntax from various angles, including how to shape it for different documents and readers. Topics covered include subordination and coordination, periodic versus cumulative sentences, proximity of subject and verb, echo words, and special techniques such as ellipsis and isolation.

“God is in the details,” the old saying goes, though any editor who has agonized endlessly over a comma or a hyphen might argue that a much darker entity lurks there.

This seminar takes an appropriately detailed look at punctuation and mechanics, including commas (what’s right, what’s wrong, what’s optional), semicolons, colons, quotation marks, apostrophes, dashes, hyphens, italics, and the ever-perplexing bullet points. The session presents up-to-date rules and guidelines, examines how punctuation and mechanics affect meaning (for instance, the relationship between commas and modifiers), and looks at some of the most useful style guides available. There will be group and individual exercises throughout the day, and participants are encouraged to bring along troublesome samples for discussion.

You can&#39;t afford embarrassing errors in your documents, and you know that a computer spell check isn&#39;t sufficient. What&#39;s more, production time is short. But you can develop strong proofreading skills to help you through any publication project. This seminar demonstrates tactics for efficiently and effectively catching and eliminating errors (both textual and visual) on screen, on paper, or in web documents—with or without a previous version for comparison.

Learn to estimate how much time is needed for proofreading, to concentrate as you work, and to keep track of versions of a document. Discover where errors are likely to lurk. Find out the top 10 things to check before going to print. We&#39;ll also discuss how to handle bilingual documents and mark up PDFs on-screen. In this learn-by-doing seminar, you&#39;ll get hands-on experience proofreading a variety of materials, including complex designs and non-text material such as tables and figures.

Eight-Step Editing breaks the editorial process down into a series of tasks that will improve the readability of the final product. If you&#39;re an editor, whatever your experience level (from novice to expert), this seminar will help you develop a systematic approach and identify functions you may have been performing only intuitively. If you&#39;re a writer, the Eight-Step process will give you techniques for improving your manuscript before it goes to an editor.

<br />Event Description: Do a significant number of Canadians and residents of Ottawa have literacy challenges? How do we measure literacy in Canada? What are the statistics? If there is a problem, why is there a problem? And most important, what are we doing about it in Ottawa?

Join us on May 18 as Mary Wiggin, Executive Director of the Ottawa Community Coalition for Literacy (OCCL), gives us an idea of literacy issues in our community.

Mary has been the Executive Director of the OCCL since 1988 and has worked in the field of adult literacy for over 25 years. She began her literacy work in Moncton, New Brunswick. When she moved to Ottawa in the early 1980s she became the coordinator of People, Words &amp; Change. Later she established a literacy program at the John Howard Society of Ottawa and helped develop English Language Tutoring of the Ottawa Community and Access to Literacy at the Neil Squire Society. Mary was on the founding boards of the Ontario Literacy Coalition and Ottawa Community Coalition for Literacy.

The OCCL supports, promotes and strengthens adult literacy services in Ottawa and is one of 16 regional literacy networks across Ontario. The non-profit, charitable organization was founded in 1984 to help literacy service providers build capacity to address emerging needs; provide service planning; manage projects; and offer information, referral services and professional development. OCCL is funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, memberships, donations and fundraising.

Book Swap!
May 18 will also be an opportunity for you to refresh your bookshelves. Bring a book, take a book. Or, if you can&#39;t bear to part with any of your own, add to your collection by buying a book and giving it a good home.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NcrBranchEvents/~4/7tXKJB7ssiw" height="1" width="1"/>

NCR Program - 7:30 - 9:30 pm ET

When: Wed Apr 20, 2011<br>Replaces event originally scheduled for: Wed Apr 20, 2011<br>

<br />Event Description: April 20, 2011 – Tricks for Getting Started and Moving Up as an Editor

Three eminent editors/writers bring their expertise to the panel table for this program evening. Beverly, Moira, and Lynn will draw from their notable backgrounds to share their experiences and answer questions on topics ranging from EAC seminars, Ryerson courses, freelance and in-house editing experiences, resources on the EAC website (ODE, Interactive Voice, branch newsletters, standards, podcasts, etc), and teaching the craft of editing.

Join us for an evening of lively discussion and add your questions to the following list:
- What university, college, and other certification is available in Ontario for professional training or education for editing?
- How do I choose the right courses or programs to become an editor?
- How do I know if I’m paying for a credible and recognized institution?
- As an experienced in-house or freelance editor, what advice do you have for new editors?
- What are the different paths that lead to becoming an in-house editor or a freelance editor?
- What are the pros and cons of in-house and freelance editing?
- What resources are available on the EAC website for members and non-members, and how do I access them?
- What is involved in the process of becoming certified through EAC and how much editing experience should editors have before taking the tests?

Beverly Ensom, a certified copy editor, is an editor of debates (Hansard) and committee reports at the House of Commons. During recesses, prorogations, and elections, she works freelance.
Moira White edits, writes, and teaches for government and corporate clients. She owns Ubiquitext Communications and is past president of EAC.
Lynn Wilson has been the in-house editor for the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation for over twenty years, editing everything from books to bookmarks.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NcrBranchEvents/~4/zfqJPg79PdE" height="1" width="1"/>

NCR Program - 7:30 - 9:30 pm ET

When: Wed Mar 16, 2011<br>Replaces event originally scheduled for: Wed Mar 16, 2011<br>

<br />Event Description: What is the plain language approach to text and how does it jibe with the skill set you need to succeed as an editor? Why should you care about plain language when you only edit sophisticated texts aimed at literate readers? What can you offer clients whose documents or websites are aimed at low-literacy adults in Canada?

Learn what you need to know about how the plain language work intersects with editing. Be prepared to get answers to tough questions, including the most common one: Isn&#39;t it about dumbing down the text? Find out why the answer is a resounding &quot;NO&quot; and how you can build a new and valuable skill set into your job as a professional editor.

Debra Huron is a self-employed writer, editor, and trainer with an expertise in plain language writing and training.
