Montana Politico Travels the Globe for Democracy | April 29, 2012

Great Falls Tribune | Link to story »

Vast expanses of land and sea separate the capital in Helena from Martyrs' Square in Benghazi and the rain forests of Liberia. The political campaigns of politicians in Great Falls seem far removed from Maoist party candidates in Nepal or women's' rights organizers in Kiev. But despite their differences, the basic mechanics of organizing a political campaign or drafting legislation hold true whether they occur in an emerging democracy or in Montana.

David Hunter has been a central figure in Montana politics for more than 30 years. He has managed election campaigns for Gov. Ted Schwinden, Rep. Pat Williams and Sen. Max Baucus. He has served as both Secretary of the Montana Senate and Chief Clerk of the Montana House of Representatives.

Speakers at a talk programme pointed out the need for extra caution and attention while reporting and disseminating news on parliamentary affairs.

At the workshop organised by Parliamentary Journalists' Society with the help of National Democratic Institute (NDI) here on Monday, the media experts and government officials admitted that although only experienced journalists do reporting on parliamentary affairs in the developed countries, the newcomers are doing the same work of reporting on such affairs in Nepal. Therefore, the news about parliament business has been falsely reported here, they added.

Algeria on Sunday launched the campaign for a parliamentary election that the ruling elite, in power for 50 years, hopes will soak up the pressure for change that has been building since the "Arab Spring" revolts in neighboring countries.

Oil and gas exporter Algeria is the only country in north Africa whose political system has remained essentially unchanged after the turmoil of last year when long-standing rulers were unseated in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

UAE Briefly Detains Staff of US Democracy Group | April 5, 2012

United Arab Emirates authorities temporarily detained members of a U.S.-funded democracy group as they tried to leave the country after their office was ordered closed, U.S. officials said Thursday.

The group included the local director of the National Democratic Institute, or NDI, who was briefly held and left the country, and another staff member, who was apparently held longer and later released, said State Department spokesman Mark Toner. The other NDI staff member remained in the UAE.

Myanmar has been in the spotlight these days as a small fraction of voters went to the polls there on Sunday, in what many hoped would be free and fair parliamentary by-elections that could make opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi a legitimate voice in Parliament.

And, if things continue to go smoothly, we can expect a gradual rolling back of international sanctions as the country opens itself up to the world.

When Winnie Byanyima was growing up in Uganda, she listened to the conversations her mother held with groups of women who would meet in her home to discuss politics in a country where women had very little say.

Today, after serving three terms in the Ugandan Parliament, leading the first parliamentary women’s caucus, and being selected for her current position as director of the United Nations Development Program Gender Team, Byanyima finds that too little has changed for women in politics around the world.

Senegal's Democracy Passes Test, but Challenges Remain for Sall | March 27, 2012

World Politics Review | Link to story »

Several hours after polls closed for Senegal’s presidential election Sunday, President Abdoulaye Wade, the 85-year-old incumbent whose decision to seek a third term in office led to waves of protest across the country, conceded defeat to Macky Sall, 50, and even called to congratulate Sall on his victory.

Many had feared that Wade, whose popularity has suffered since he took office in 2000 due to rising levels of unemployment, the soaring cost of living and increasingly visible corruption, would remain in office regardless of the election results.

DNC Boss Frets Over Shrinking Female Vote | March 26, 2012

Washington Examiner | Link to story »

Led by their populist leader, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., the Democratic National Committee this month opened a new Women’s Initiative to support female candidates and women surrogate speakers for all Democrat office-seekers who rely on women voters to win. “Women’s voices are crucial for our democracy,” says Wasserman Schultz.

She has been working overtime to get women back to the voting booths and their numbers expanded in Congress. In speeches, like one before the National Democratic Institute last week, she uses scary numbers to shock women to join her cause. For example, she notes that since Congress was created in the 1700s, just 277 women have served compared to 12,000 men. “At this rate we will not reach parity in Congress for 500 years,” she says.
