From South Street and the Downtown Mall to the 250 Bypass, and from McIntire and Birdwood Road in the west to Kelly Avenue in the east, North Downtown is located in the heart of Charlottesville.

The North Downtown Residents Association is our neighborhood’s voice in matters of community and neighborhood concern, uniting the thoughts and concerns of many into one voice that speaks for the neighborhood as a whole. We need your ideas, your suggestions, your help, and we welcome your support.

Unless we make our opinions known on issues of common concern, neighborhood interests can easily be ignored or simply taken for granted. The NDRA serves as a clearinghouse for information, a forum for discussion of neighborhood issues and a vehicle for making our concerns known to those who make decisions. Join us and make your voice heard.

Virginia Community Band Festival, June 30, 10am -10pm

As part of Charlottesville’s Celebrate250, the Charlottesville Municipal Band and The Orange Community Band will sponsor the Second annual Virginia Community Band Festival at the Charlottesville Pavilion on Saturday, June 30 between 10:00 am and 10:00 pm. The FREE program will present twelve community bands and more than seven hundred musicians from across the state of Virginia, with each ensemble performing a forty-five minute program of marches, patriotic selections, and popular and jazz tunes. Small ensembles from some of the bands will also perform along the pedestrian mall leading to the Pavilion.

Charlottesville to host The Virginia Festival of History

The Celebrate 250 Steering Committee is asking residents and visitors to attend more than 50 activities that highlight and honor Charlottesville’s diverse history as part of its Celebrate 250 anniversary year.

The Virginia Festival of History is a signature festival that starts Memorial Day weekend with ceremonies to honor those who served and died in war.
This first-of-its-kind festival will end with a two-day, living-history performance involving over 100 costumed re-enactors at Court Square and Lee Park. This brand new festival in 2012 will celebrate the rich local cultural heritage of Charlottesville through educational and entertaining events that let visitors learn and experience the diverse history of Virginia through daily lectures and tours, films, concerts and dramatic performances.

Another highlight will be the unearthing of a time capsule that was buried 50 years ago which will take place on May the 27th.
Most events are free and open to the public. Each day of the festival highlights a different topic in Charlottesville’s vivid history:
May 26 - Remembering Those Who Died in the Civil War
May 27 - Remembering the 200th Anniversary in 1962
May 28 - 250 Years of Sacrifice in Our Nation’s Wars
May 29 - 250 Years of African-American Community Life
May 30 - 250 Years of Growing Neighborhoods
May 31 - 250 Years of Religion, Education and Culture
June 1 - 250 Years of Architecture, Development and Design
June 2 - Living History Festival of Our First 200 Years
June 3 - Reenactment of the British invasion of 1781

Over 25 scholars will speak during the festival and there will be diverse panels of veterans of the civil rights movement and veterans of foreign wars. Tours include the historic cemeteries, Starr Hill/West Main Street, architecture tour of residential areas, and more.

The culminating living history weekend at Court Square and Lee Park will allow locals and visitors of all ages to step back in time and meet living historical characters from the past 200 years as well as enjoy period crafts, music, dancing, games and food. Trespassing a Problem ?

A Barment notice is a notice filed with the Police Department that gives Police enforcement powers on private property. You do need to be willing to press charges, and appear in court. It is routinely used for problem properties, where trespassing is regularly occurring, especially because the owner may not regularly be on site. The underlying issues could be that a guest may stop by to wait for you to visit could be subject to arrest as well, so for that reason it’s best to reserve it for problem areas. Blanket coverage could really provide for unwanted complications. There is no way to have “exclusions” for your friends. The law already allows for anyone found on your property to be arrested if they refuse to leave, or return after being asked not to, at your request. The Barment just helps us to enforce the latter part when the problem is reoccurring.

Based on the issues your neighborhood [ND] was experiencing, we are certainly interested in helping with anything along these lines right away. They were certainly reoccurring problems. I would be happy to answer any questions or advise if further guidance is needed. If there are new problems cropping up we would like to know so they can be addressed [970-3292]. Of course, at any time something is actually going on, please call 911.
