Fixes and improvements

As Nearness was in a quite unstable mood the last few weeks and months I gave it some time and now it works actually nicer than ever.

All the changes are written down below to give you an idea what was fixed. (There are still lots of things that need to be done though)

Dis/connecting things

The last weeks it was not possible to disconnect for example an author. The little crosses appeared only on the upper left corner but were hardly usable. The connecting worked well, but was not immediately visible for the user, only after a reload the connections got visible. These two problems are fixed and hopefully helping users to.

Another problem came with the events. It was not entirely clear how to connect the place where an event happens. This became now much simpler and better working.

Simplification of the data model

The amount of different things became overwhelming, it was a pretty hard decision on what something is. I minimised the different types into:

- event (very obvious what it is)
- project/group (an small and active group of people)
- an organisation (for example a university or any other 'official' group)
- a place (a museum, bar, club, etc.)
- a city (obvious)
- a person (obvious)
- an article (text, review, etc. written by the user itself) and
- an artefact (books, movies, magazines, websites, quotes, etc.)

This will simplify the decision what to create, especially on the run. There might be certain situations though, where this model is far too simple. To give the user a possibility to point out in a very short way another input field was added, namely the 'one word description'. This can easily just be 'book' or 'a book that changed my life'.

Adding cc license and the displaying of this information

To allow people to use your texts and images in a different context it is now very easy to give your items a creative commons license. Always when an article is in edit mode a red bar on the very top of the page is popping up, showing your license or, if nothing selected, the copyright icon. Simply click on it and select the license of your choice. This license will be then displayed under your item, when it's...

Due to some updates in the rights management all new users were not allowed to see anything or to do anything. As the old users still had all the proper rights it slipped my sight.

Nearness up and down

As some of you might have noticed nearness was down for a few days. And in general it's very silent here. This is due to some lack of time and other things. But I'll spend the coming weeks and months more time on it, mainly defining the concept around it, enhancing the possibilities and trying to find ways to get more content.

It might be a good idea to involve more people in it, to avoid these silent moments. If you are interested in helping to shape nearness then just drop me a line ().
