trbidi="on">
Well as you know NEC SL1000 can support IP extensions & IP trunks (both SIP/H.323). In our setup for such services sometimes we encounter issues like extensions not registered, IP trunks not linked up. And therefore today i would like to introduce the usage of this network trouble-shooting tool known as Wireshark.

Wireshark used to be known as Ethereal for those who has used this tool before. I mean it is great that we can capture what is going on in the network but there are soo many information which are not relevant for our purpose. FYI before we can capture any network traffic, we need to ensure that the port where you are connecting your PC can 'see' network traffic going on elsewhere (for example at port 16 where your NEC SL1000 VoIP card is connected to). There are 2 ways to capture network traffic; port mirroring & using a network hub.

After we have captured the network packets, we can make use of filter command to 'see' the things we want to see;

sip (this command allows us to see only the SIP communications between NEC PBX & end-points)

ip.src==x.x.x.x (this command allows us to see traffic coming from x.x.x.x under Source field)

ip.src==x.x.x.x (this command allows us to see traffic coming from x.x.x.x under Source field)

ip.src==x.x.x.x&&ip.dst==x.x.x.x (this command allows us to see traffic coming from both x.x.x.x under Source field, x.x.x.x under Destination field)

These commands are very useful to perform your network trouble-shooting.

<p:colorscheme colors="#ffffff,#000000,#808080,#000000,#ffd200,#e62d00,#00b4a0,#69b43c">

NEC SL1000 offers deployment in a hospitality setup. This solution is well geared towards small boutique hotel / small hotel+motel, without the hassle to connect to PMS side for integration.

It offers all the good hotel features as a standalone solution. With the use of this license SL-SYS-HOTEL LIC it allows the usage of the following useful hotel features;

Check-In / Check-Out
Wake-Up Call
Message Waiting
Do Not Disturb (DND)
Single Digit Access
Toll Restriction Class Change for each Room
Room to Room Call Restriction
Room Status Indication on DSS Console
Room Status Output
Room Monitoring by SLT

*Note: The above hotel feature will be access through phone access codes

Well folks we have been waiting for a long time for the new release of NEC SL1000 R2 enhancements. The new version was launched recently and below shows you the new feature enhancements;

Distinctive Ringing Enhancement

Embedded VRS Enhancement

System Features Enhancement

IP Trunk Enhancement

VBD (Voice Band Data) Support

E-mail Notification Enhancement

Do stay tuned for the updated download links for the new release. My apologies for the broken download links so far, let me do something.

Lastly for the new enhancement, there is no new hardware nor license introduction.

NEC SL1000 supports SIP trunk, and therefore it is possible to connect the system to Skype via Skype Connect (formerly known as Skype SIP trunk service). With the service subscribe for the business owner, now it is possible to integrate Skype call button into your corporate website. Meaning when a potential customer sees your website and wish to contact you for further enquiry on the NEC communication platforms, they can simply click on the Skype button to make a call direct to the company.

Below shows you how typical Skype users see this Skype Connect user, and how can outside users (offnet) make a direct call to the users behind this Skype Connect service;

In a way this is a

NEC SL1000 is well suited for deployment in budget/boutique hotel/motel. It does comes with hotel features like check-in/check-out, room cutoff,wake-up call, single digital dialing (one-touch), message waiting, room to room calling restriction, toll restriction, room status, room status printout, dss console monitoring (for hotel operator, front desk personnel), do not disturb.

Things to take note of;

License: NEC SL1000 Hotel license is required

Operator DSS console: Take note that although in total there are 60keys in the 60keys-DSS console, the last row cannot be used for room extension (where you can check the message waiting status, wake-up call status, room status)

Integration to PMS: NO (NEC SL1000 in hotel mode works as a standalone hospitality solution for budget hoteliers where all hotel features relating to NEC SL1000 needs to be done from the phone set itself). For example when a guest checks in, the front desk personnel need to lift up the handset or speaker mode, dial a service code (738 for check-in, 739 for check-out) and then this guest is checked in. Once the guest is checked to the room, the NEC SL1000 system will record down the check-in time, change the toll restriction class and room status.

In terms of integration with NEC platforms or other vendors here are the possibilties for NEC SL1000;

TDM - FXS/FXO, ISDN T & S Point

IP - SIP trunk

In order to link up 2 x NEC SL1000 systems by IP connectivity, SIP trunk is the only way to achieve this setup.

Below shows you what are the program commands required =>

As the SIP trunk setup is mirror on both SL1000 (only the IP address pointing, numbering is different) i will only give the config for 1 side.

1. Basic Setup for IP Trunk

PRG10-40-01: Set to 1

PRG10-40-02: Set it to minimum 4 (you will need your 4 x SIP trunk over here)

PRG10-03-02: Set to 1:SIP

2. Setup the SIP trunk

PRG10-12-09/10/03: Define your ip address, subnet mask, default GW

PRG84-26-01: Assign the ip address for the DSP resources (1 ip address per 16 dsp)

PRG10-17-01: Set to 2:Manual

PRG10-17-02: Define the ip address (same as your voip card ip address)

PRG10-18-01: set it to 11 (12 for the other system)

PRG10-23-01: set it to 1:yes

PRG10-23-02: point to the other system ip address

PRG10-23-04: set 12 (when user dial 12, it will point to this sip trunk)

PRG10-28-04: set it to 11 (12 for the other system)

PRG10-29-14: set to 0

PRG84-14-07/08: set it to 1800

do the same setup for the other NEC SL1000 system.

test it out by trying to make call across.

btw i stumbled upon a new website (www.necphone.org) which strives to promote NEC voice systems as a whole. hmm it seems like a good deal, go check it out and make contributions to this social network made for NEC voice system installers.

http://nec-sl1000.blogspot.com

NEC SL1000: VRS Upload / Download

http://www.fileserve.com/file/E72rXPt/SL1000 VRS Upload Download.pdf

For NEC SL1000 it comes with a user-friendly interface for the installer to upload/download the VRS messages (prompts). As you might have already know, the CF card used for NEC SL1000 cannot be viewed using a standard Windows-OS. Whereas for the previous models (Aspila EX / Aspila Topaz), you can simply view the files inside the CF card using Windows-OS.

Using the WebPro interface (login name: user1 password: 1111) you can perform upload / download of VRS messages. And one thing very nice is that you can use the VRS message for the MOH which your customer can choose (bear in mind that the music file is owned by the customer, corporate music. Copyright infringement issues).

http://nec-sl1000.blogspot.com

NEC SL1000: Desktop Suite (Software Download)

http://www.fileserve.com/file/dSpJ5Pa/SL_Desktop_UK_100.zip
Ok enough said. Download the installation package to test drive this application; NEC SL1000 softphone.
Although it has the same application name for SV8100, it is totally different (in terms of functionality, GUI)....

http://nec-sl1000.blogspot.com

NEC SL1000: Desktop Suite (Softphone for SL1000)

http://www.fileserve.com/file/wFfW8a2/SL1000_Desktop_Suite_Manual_1_0_GE.pdf

Well the NEC SL1000 now support Desktop Application Suite. This software package gives the user the ability to use softphone which is very useful for traveller, mobile warrrior.

One nice integration between this softphone is the use of NEC USB handset UTR-1W, which gives an seamless user experience. There is no need to press soft button to answer nor make calls, you can simply lift up the handset when the phone rings. To make calls simply lift up the handset dial the numbers you require in the keypad. This is a very nice feature which i personally feel is good.
Well what is so good about the IP Phone IP4WW-24TIXH-C-TEL of NEC SL1000 compared to it's digital phone IP4WW-12TXH-A-TEL & IP4WW-24TXH-A-TELrange?

Let me discuss in detail on the goodness of using this IP phone for NEC SL1000;

It has soft keys (with extra indication for Voicemail, and Call List) => see the screen shot below

It has backlight

It has delicated headset jack

The handsfree is full-duplex

Here are the steps to setup 3rd-party SIP phone for NEC SL1000;

Hardware Required:

VoIP board (IP4WW-VOIPDB-C1) – Mandatory

Expansion Memory card (IP4WW-MEMDB-C1) - Mandatory

Software Licenses Required:

SL-IP-SIPEXT-1 LIC (Initial system loaded with 4 licenses, need to buy for the 5th phone onwards, max. 16 quantity)

Programming Steps required in NEC SL1000:

Network Setting

Define the IP address of the VoIP card under PROG10-12-09

Define the Subnet Mask of the VoIP card under PROG10-12-10

Define Default GW of the VoIP card under PROG10-12-03

Define the IP address for the DSP resource in VoIP card under PROG84-26-01 (*note: IP address should be in the same network as the IP address given under PROG10-12-09)

SIP Port Setting

Define the SIP Port to be used by the SIP phone for registration under PROG84-20-01, set to 5060 (since this is the standard port used for SIP, certain softphone by default is already set to 5060)

Reserve Number for the SIP phone

Go to Menu bar, click on 'Programming' -> 'Unregistered Phones' -> 'IP Phone List'

Check-marked the extension you want to be used for your SIP phone

Take note of the MAC address of your SIP phone (hard phone), for softphone the MAC address is your PC loaded with the software

Go to PROG15-05-02 and input the MAC address for the reserved number used for your SIP phone

Set the Necessary Settings in your SIP phone

*Note: Ensure the SIP phone is in the common network as the NEC SL1000 (VoIP), try to ping to it first

Set the SIP Registrar IP address (IP address of the VoIP card)

Set the SIP extension number

Set the SIP extension password (just set it as your extension number, since authentication is by pre-defined MAC address in the NEC SL1000 system)

Reset your SIP phone

Now the 3rd-party phone shall be able to register to NEC SL1000 and this phone is able to make calls, receive calls to/from NEC SL1000 analog/digital/IP terminals

http://nec-sl1000.blogspot.com

NEC SL1000: NEC SL1000 InMail Setup (Voicemail Setup)

http://www.fileserve.com/file/dKtAgMs/[6]_SL1000_Training_(In-Mail)_1-0.pdf
I would term them as the unique selling point (USP) of NEC SL1000 series Smart Communication Server.

In terms of unique telephony features we have the following for NEC SL1000: Mobile Extension, Mobile Extension Callback To Mobile, Remote Conference, Live Record (InMail), ability to configure the system without the need for maintenance terminal VIA the use of digital phone, ability to make use of internet browser to upload/download VRS messages, ability to use the VRS as your own personal Music-On-Hold (MOH). I understand that many installers of NEC SV8100 don't know that we can simply upload a customized short clip of a song as a system VRS message and then point to this VRS for your own personalized MOH. Well for NEC SL1000 it is the same, we are able to do that instead of having a external music player plug in into the CO trunk port of NEC SL1000. As for more details on the Mobile Extension, Mobile Extension Callback kindly refer to my earlier posting.

Secondly on the unique features of NEC SL1000 with regards to ecology we can have power saving mode which I feel is good for the greater environment as a whole. When the digital phone is idle by default it will draw lesser power from the NEC SL1000 chassis in return achieve a win-win situation both for the consumers and also the environment. One of the very interesting feature of the ecology mode is that we are able to define "power off" mode for certain packages or cards (408, 008, 000, PRI) during non-office hours which to the NEC SL1000 system is the night mode. This also saves electricity bills for the consumers and like-wise for the greater good for mother earth. Also the NEC SL1000 Smart Communication Server is build with the "Green Earth" concept meaning the components used for the production meets the ROHS criteria.

Lastly the Security feature of the NEC SL1000 is a great concept with design catered to the enterprise and especially home users. The interesting thing here is that we can connect an infrared red sensor to one of the hybrid ports of the NEC SL1000 and upon triggering of the sensor, the system can be pre-programmed to call a certain number (presumely to police) with pre-recorded message. And that's not all, the NEC SL1000 system can also do an internal paging (through the digital phone in speaker mode) and also external paging if connected to a external paging unit. I find that this security is good for home users and also factories or warehouses.
Published with Blogger-droid v1.7.4

http://nec-sl1000.blogspot.com

NEC SL1000: ISDN Setup

http://www.fileserve.com/file/Fv8EVAS/%5B5%5D_SL1000_Training_%28ISDN%29_1-0.pdf
(NEC SL1000 ISDN Setup)

This slide teaches the installer on how to setup the ISDN digital trunk for NEC SL1000. It is a comprehensive document which details down the hardware technicality (pin out, hardware used => IP4WW-2BRIDB-C1 & IP4WW-1PRU-C1), programming steps, critical setting in the NEC SL1000 system to display the CLIP - Calling Line Identification Presentation, in short CALLER-ID. how to program the ISDN trunk to accept DDI mapping number (mapping of external DDI number range into internal extension).

Important note here:
=> For ISDN-2, we are using the IP4WW-2BRIDB-C1 daughtercard mounted on either IP4WW-008E-A1 or IP4WW-000E-A1\
=> For ISDN-10 & ISDN-30, we are using the same IP4WW-1PRU-C1

For ISDN-10 setup please look at the fractional PRI setup, although now most of the time the NEC SL1000 will auto select the number of bearer (voice) channels

http://nec-sl1000.blogspot.com

NEC SL1000 vs NEC Aspila Topaz

Let us take a look at some of the main differences between NEC SL1000 and NEC Aspila Topaz.

First we have the support of IP phones for NEC SL1000 while NEC Aspila Topaz don't support any IP phones, only TDM phones. The only IP networking method available for both plaforms is the H.323 trunking while for the NEC SL1000 it also support SIP trunking at the same time. There has been a lot of confusion over the support of IP phones for NEC Aspila Topaz. It don't not support IP phones and that the IP capability is only in terms of IP Internetworking between 2 Topaz systems.

Second while NEC SL1000 system has a proper licensing structuring, for the NEC Aspila Topaz it does not have any licenses. One thing to note here is that for the Topaz system it does have 1 license which is for the Hotel/Motel feature activation. However the license activation is more on the commercial side, buying of license and then manual keying of the license into the Topaz system VIA PCPro.

Thirdly while there are many add -on cards for NEC Aspila Topaz, the NEC SL1000 does away with the additional cards by having dual purposes in it's hybrid extension and analog trunk ports. For example the NEC Aspila Topaz system has the 2PGDU card for the support of doorphone, while NEC SL1000 uses the hybrid 6th & 7th port for such purposes.

Fourthly previously the NEC Aspila Topaz has the following add-ons key modules for its digital phone, 24dls and 110 dss console while for the NEC SL1000 now it only has 60 keys Dss console.

5. Both NEC systems supports ISDN-2 but for the NEC SL1000 it can also support ISDN-30. Well both of them still don't support analog DID, 2/4 W E&M, QSIG. Therefore the integration option is still limited for both NEC systems especially for the Topaz system.

6. In terms of design-wise the NEC Aspila Topaz is a better build compared to NEC SL1000. At least the Topaz system has a solid metal base with a proper housing for the power supply unit (safety aspect) and the build is much more solid. While for the NEC SL1000 the entire chassis is made of plastic and it does have a bit of filmsy feel to it. And I do hope that in the next hardware revision of the NEC SL1000 the NEC design team will cover up the power supply unit instead of just leaving it as common access when the cover is removed.

7. Architecturally-wise there is also changes in the analog trunk ports. For the NEC Aspila Topaz it comes with 3 analog trunks for the main board & 308 card while for the NEC SL1000 now it has 4 analog trunks for the main board & 408 cards.
(NEC SL1000 Basic Programming)

This presentation slides gives the installer a good start-up on how to configure the basic setup for NEC SL1000. It only gives the reader a basic overview of what needs to be done for initial system setup.
Items that are mentioned are as follows;

(NEC SL1000 System Installation)

In this slide it describes the following aspect of the NEC SL1000 in terms of hardware installation, mounting, card mounting concept, system upgrade, etc;

Mounting Method: The mounting method available for NEC SL1000 is the wall-mount type. This is the only recommended mounting other than placing it horizontally on a rack tray. It also states the recommended distance between each system chassis.

Expansion KSU Interconnection: To recap we will need to have the following cards when we need to have expansion system chassis; EXIFB-C1 & MEMDB-C1 card. These 2 cards shall be mounted into the main chassis and we should use the supplied cables to interconnect the main to the expansion chassis. Supplied cable is 1M and it should not be extended to ensure proper system operation.

System Grounding: The system grounding is very important for safety aspect and most importantly for the proper functioning of the CALLER-ID transmission (for Analog Trunk Caller ID). It is not so crucial for countries that already comes with 3-pin power connection (ground is already supplied).

Power Failure Transfer: For NEC SL1000 on the 8th port of the 008/408 card besides serving as a hybrid port, it also has a dual purpose (either 1) of supporting the DSS console & the PFT Power Failure Transfer circuit. So please be clear on the usage of this port. When this port is used as a PFT circuit, it is physically hard-wired to the 1st port of the CO (Analog CO trunk). Meaning in times o system power failure, the customer is still able to receive/make external calls using the analog phone connected to the 8th hybrid port. NOTE: ONLY ANALOG PHONE CAN BE PLUG IN FOR PFT TO WORK.

Trunk Port Usage: For the 408 card for NEC SL1000 system, the analog trunk ports also serves another purpose. Trunk Port 2 for External Paging, Trunk Port 3 for External MOH, Trunk Port 4 for BGM Background Music. The usage is fixed and cannot be used on another trunk port, meaning if i want to use external MOH connection i can only make use of Trunk Port 3 and not the rest. Also if the trunk port is used for such purposes, then the trunk itself cannot be connected to this port (you will have 1 less trunk port to used).

Extension Port Usage: In this section it mention the usage of the hybrid port itself. Important note; Port 6 & 7 can also be used to connect NEC doorphone. Port 8 can also be used for either DSS console or Power Failure Transfer PFT usage.

Cable Length: It details down the maximum cable length that a connection should be. For example for analog phone connection, the maximum distance of the phone away from the system is 1125metres based on 0.5mm cable core

System Card Installation: For each NEC SL1000 system chassis (main/expansion) we can put in additional 3 more cards (slot 2-4: 408/008/000/PRI). As the cards are stacked on top of each other, we have to be clear on which cards we want to mount first. NOTE: PRI card only 1 piece per chassis

CPU Optional Cards: For the CPU card we can install the following cards based on customer's requirements: EXIFB-C1, MEMDB-C1, PZ-VM21, CF card, VOIPDB-C1 cards

System Start-up: For NEC SL1000 we ca have hot & cold start-up. Cold start-up is for reverting the NEC SL1000 system back to factory default setting, Hot start-up is for loading the customer data into the system for normal operation.

System Access: To access the NEC SL1000 we can have the 3 following methods of configuring the system; digital phone CATMODE, web programming WebPro and pc programming PCPro. Each of the method has it's pros and cons because certain commands are available only in certain login mode. For example when we need to define (reserve) number for IP phones, we have to use the PCPro. In another example when we want to activate the 60-days free license trial, we have to use the phone to do it.

SL1000 Slot Number Concept: As we can have up to 4 system chassis, it is important to understand the slot number. So in total NEC SL1000 has 16 slots including the main board.

Software Upgrade: In this slide it details down the process for perform NEC SL1000 system firmware upgrade. Take note that a blank CF card is required and the firmware needs to be loaded into the root drive of the CF card.

System Firmware Checking: Steps on how to check the current firmware version of the NEC SL1000. With this step you can also check the hardware keycode of the system which is required during license activation.

And many more: data saving, system shutdown, how to access to the NEC SL1000 system using the 3 login methods
