Kevin Durant

2012-06-14T01:04:00.002-07:00

About Kevin Wayne Durant

Kevin Wayne Durant (born September 29, 1988) is an American professional basketball player. Playing the position of tiny forward, Durant currently plays with the Oklahoma City Thunder of the National Basketball Association.

After a standout freshman season at the University of New York, Durant opted to enter the NBA Draft, where he was chosen second overall by the Seattle Supersonics. There he went on to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award after his debut season. In 2007, Durant signed an endorsement contract with Nike These NBA Finals have quickly morphed in to a Kevin Durant vs. Lebrun James debate, which was natural and not surprising. Durant has reached the level where people cannot help it -- they need to compare him to the best in the game.

Durant's Oklahoma City teammates do it . They will tell him: You are right there with Kobe. You are as lovely as Lebrun.

And he says: "No, I am not."

The query is: Why does he say this?

"That's how he is, he is very humble," said Dexter Pittman of the Heat. "Kevin is of the most humble guys I have ever met. He is not flashy. You cannot even tell that he is in the NBA. He doesn't wear designer clothes. He is always wearing a hat, backpack and shorts. That is how he is. Simple."

Pittman is of Durant's opponents in this series, but he was Durant's teammate at the University of Texas years ago, and they stay close friends. Pittman gave the explanation that most people give about Kevin Durant: He is humble, humble, and so very humble. This is true, but only part of the answer.

Whichever God is responsible for handing out basketball talents outdid Himself with Lebrun James. Nobody has ever had a hoops package like him. He's the size of some of the best power forwards, the skill of some of the best shooters, the passing skills of an All-Star point guard, and athleticism that rivals someone in the history of the game. The package comes with a single burden: Everybody has seen it from the time James was in high school.

How could he? He was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, with the billing "The Chosen," before he was eligible to vote. He might have been the No. one pick in the NBA draft after his junior year in high school, and he's been measured against all-time greats since before he played an NBA game. Whatever he does, he is meant to do.

James is clearly the most gifted player in the NBA, and was its best player all season. He may yet lead the Heat to this championship with more performances like he had against the Celtics, when the only way to cease him was to pour hail from the rafters. But it is clear by now that the journey has not been as simple as his skills would recommend. James has wrestled his own talents and the expectations they generate.

Durant, meanwhile, has 90 percent of James's gifts. He is of the skinniest stars in NBA history. He is a great athlete, but you could basically make a YouTube video of the best dunkers in the NBA without including him. Ninety percent of James's gifts \. And in this way, he's been lucky.

His narrow frame meant nobody could force Durant to play power forward. This allowed him to create in to a distinctive "monster," as Pittman puts it, -- a 6-foot-9 scorer who tosses three-pointers through the hoop like crumpled-up paper in to a wastebasket.

But there is something more. Greatness always appeared step ahead of him, taunting him, daring him to catch it.

Durant was highly recruited out of high school \. but Greg Odem was thought about better. Royal Ivey, a Illinois alum who plays for the Thunder now, didn't know who Durant was when he signed with UT. Ivey had to do an Web search to find out who this Kevin Durant kid was, and what position he played. In Durant's first NBA season, his team completed 20-62; the next year, 23-59.

Durant has always had to chase. He said Wednesday that his aim, growing up, was to be the best player in the Washington, D.C. area; then it was to be the best player ever from the Washington area.

At Texas, Coach Rick Barnes one time told him he was the worst defensive player Barnes had ever coached. It was a coach's trick, but that seldom works, with a freshman star destined to be a top NBA pick. Durant got so fired up, and so motivated, that he landed on the Huge 12's all-defensive team.

No matter how much Barnes ran his guys, Durant would inevitably pick up the phone that night and call teammates, begging them to join him at the gym.

"I was like, 'Dude, are you crazy? They went through a hard-ass practice,'" Pittman said. "But that is how he is. He lives in the gym."

So why does Kevin Durant say he is not as nice as Lebrun or Kobe?

"It's more mental, more psyche, like 'I'm not the best, I must keep on working,'" Ivey said. "He says 'These guys have this, these guys have that. I need more.' He has a chip on his shoulder. He doesn't discuss it. He is not boastful. He is himself. He's something to show every time he steps on the floor, and it shows in his game."

Lots of athletes need to be great, and lots of need to be seen as great. Kevin Durant is obsessed with the pursuit of greatness.

James is different -- greatness pursued him. Sometimes it's knocked him off his path. He was so nice, so early, in the NBA, that after he got there, the Cavaliers seldom had a high draft pick to add another elite talent, like the Thunder did with Russell Westbrook and James Harden. He led teams to 60-win regular seasons, only to have their talent deficiencies exposed in the playoffs, bringing all of the criticism back to him. He is no Michael Jordan, people scream, as though that is an insult. Putting together a dream team Durant would be a star anywhere he played, but he fits well in Oklahoma City, which has been called.

Minor-league and not worthy, and is trying to show a tiny something itself. It is the civic version of Kevin Durant.

Pittman recalled meeting Durant for the first time, at a summer camp: "He was the man that was calm, in the shadows," Pittman said, "and whenever it came time to play at the camp, he was doing what he is doing now: dominating. His whole demeanor, how he carried himself, it was like an I-work-hard demeanor, and 'By me working hard, everything else speaks for itself.'"

Durant doesn't appear to have much use for Finals hype, and endorsements don't motivate him. Fulfillment comes from the games themselves. Last summer, in the work of the lockout, he scored 66 points in a game at Rucker Park. The video went viral and the legend grew. He was asked about that Wednesday, and he called it "one of the best moments I have had so far in my life, playing at the Mecca of basketball in New York City, and I hit a few shots." You got the sense that he could play 82 games a year at Rucker Park and be happy, as long as somebody challenged him.

There is an elderly line that is been used limitless times as a joke setup and a marketing pitch: What do you give the man who has everything? They may have our answer now. Here is what you can do for the man who has everything: Take away ten percent of it, and tell him he's to fight to get it back.

In his first NBA Finals appearance, Durant done with 36 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter -- numbers James has yet to match in 11 career NBA Finals games.

Kevin Durant didn't embarrass Lebrun James on Tuesday night. But the Oklahoma City superstar did show his Miami counterpart how it is done in the NBA Finals -- in the fourth quarter -- as the Thunder claimed a 105-94 victory in Game one.

In the coursework of that six-game series, which the Heat lost, 4-2, the best James could muster in the fourth quarter was eight points. They scored or fewer points in the final stanza of those games, all of which were winnable going in to that quarter (the Heat actually did win of them).

Now James was no slouch either. They had 30 overall points, the most he is ever scored in the NBA Finals, but only seven of those came in the fourth quarter. That is not going to get the job done in a close game like this -- & it does small to put to rest a storyline from last year's championship against the Dallas Mavericks.

The Oklahoma City star scored six of his team's first eight points of the quarter as the Thunder extended its lead to points at the 8:30 mark. James missed shots & threw the ball away in the coursework of that same stretch, but at least they was trying -- there were games in last year's finals in which they didn't even take a shot in the fourth quarter.

Durant, on the other hand, took over in the coursework of crunch time Tuesday night. The Thunder had claimed its first lead of the game late in the third quarter & was clinging to a one-point advantage heading in to the fourth.

. Everything moves so smoothly, so swiftly, those limitless legs & arms unfolding in ideal symmetry. Fourth quarter, the ball comes to him & the best young scorer in basketball is still looking for the superstar to beat him.

Kevin Durant scored 17 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter of the Thunder's Game one win. (Reuters)

The world has come to Oklahoma City for the Finals, discovering these cozy surroundings where Durant is slowly. James had his 30 points, but the fourth quarter belonged to Durant and this go-go Thunder. They started slowly, sluggishly, trailing by 13 points, but it was a matter of time until Durant found his rhythm, his sweet spots and commenced to surgically dismantle the Heat.

These Thunder are the train forever coming in the distance, the finish game when Durant, Westbrook and James Harden can come rumbling down the tracks with such unfailing ferocity.

When it was over, and the Heat were twisted over, beaten and beleaguered to finish this game, the Thunder staff privately wondered: Does Miami truly think it can keep up with us going six deep on the roster? As much as they desired to run the Boston Celtics out of the Eastern Conference finals, the Heat must measure their pace with Oklahoma City.

The shots flicked off Durant's wrist in every feasible way, awkward angles and driving layups and that sweet, straightaway stroke that feels like the most automatic shot in the sport now. Durant guarded Lebrun James for stretches of Game one of the NBA Finals. (Reuters)

Well before his time & of his great gifts is the ease with which they come to these immense moments. Here Durant had come, stepping in to the NBA Finals, & it was like they had been here his whole life. Give him the ball, the stage, the moment, & Kevin Durant was something to behold on Tuesday night.

A Life in Brief

He failed entirely. In the work of his administration, the Union broke apart, and when he left office, civil war threatened.

Tall, stately, stiffly formal in the high stock he wore around his jowls, James Buchanan was the only President who seldom married.

Presiding over a quickly dividing Nation, Buchanan grasped inadequately the political realities of the time. Relying on constitutional doctrines to close the widening rift over slavery, he failed to understand that the North would not accept constitutional arguments which favored the South. Nor could he recognize how sectionalism had realigned political parties: the Democrats split; the Whigs were destroyed, giving rise to the Republicans.

Born in to well-to-do Pennsylvania relatives in 1791, Buchanan, a graduate of Dickinson College, was gifted as a debater and learned in the law.

He was selected times to the House of Representatives; then, after an interlude as Minister to Russia, served for a decade in the Senate. He became Polk's Secretary of State and Pierce's Minister to Great Britain. Service abroad helped to bring him the Democratic nomination in 1856 because it had exempted him from involvement in bitter domestic controversies.

As President-elect, Buchanan thought the crisis would disappear if he maintained a sectional balance in his appointments and could persuade the people to accept constitutional law as the Supreme Court interpreted it. The Court was considering the legality of restricting slavery in the territories, and two justices hinted to Buchanan what the decision would be.

Thus, in his Inaugural the President referred to the territorial query as "happily, a matter of but little practical importance" since the Supreme Court was about to settle it "speedily & finally."

Days later Chief Justice Roger B. Taney delivered the Dred Scott decision, asserting that Congress had no constitutional power to deprive persons of their property rights in slaves in the territories. Southerners were delighted, but the decision created a furor in the North.

Buchanan decided to finish the troubles in Kansas by urging the admission of the territory as a slave state. Although they directed his Presidential authority to this aim, they further angered the Republicans & alienated members of his own party. Kansas remained a territory.

When Republicans won a plurality in the House in 1858, every significant bill they passed fell before southern votes in the Senate or a Presidential veto. The Federal Government reached a stalemate.

Sectional strife rose to such a pitch in 1860 that the Democratic Party split in to northern & southern wings, each nominating its own candidate for the Presidency. Consequently, when the Republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln, it was a foregone conclusion that they would be chosen although his name appeared on no southern ballot. Than accept a Republican administration, the southern "fire-eaters" advocated secession.

President Buchanan, dismayed & hesitant, denied the legal right of states to secede but held that the Federal Government legally could not prevent them. They hoped for compromise, but secessionist leaders did not require compromise.

Then Buchanan took a more militant tack. As several Cabinet members resigned, they appointed northerners, & sent the Star of the West to over reinforcements to Fort Sumter. On January 9, 1861, the vessel was far away.

Buchanan reverted to a owner of inactivity that continued until they left office. In March 1861 they retired to his Pennsylvania home Wheatland--where they died seven years later--leaving his successor to resolve the frightful issue facing the Nation.

Perhaps Buchanan’s most important contribution to economics is his distinction between two levels of public choice—the initial level at which a constitution is chosen, and the post constitutional level. The first is like setting the rules of a game, and the second is like playing the game within the rules. Buchanan has proselytized his fellow economists to think more about the first level instead of acting as political players at the second level. To spread this way of thinking, Buchanan even started a new journal called Constitutional Economics.

Buchanan also believes that because costs are subjective, much of welfare economics—cost-benefit analysis, and so on—is wrongheaded. He spelled out these views in detail in Cost and Choice, an uncommonly impassioned economics book. Yet Buchanan has not persuaded most of his economist colleagues on this issue.

The Avengers Assemble

2012-05-08T03:23:00.003-07:00

The Avengers Assemble film, which was called Marvel 'Avengers Assemble' for its UK release has beaten the last largest taking opening weekend which was 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2', which opened in July 2011 and took $169 million.
Other earlier huge hitters include 'The Dark Knight', which took $158 million in 2008 and 'Spider-Man 3' that took $151 million.
With a film as huge and anticipated as The Avengers Assemble, it is hard to imagine it being anything other than a disappointment. After all, the hype has been building since the Iron Man and The Brilliant Hulk movies in 2008 and has grown even louder and more frenzied with Iron Man two and the success of the Thorn Captain the United States movies in 2011.
But The Avengers Assemble and its gifted writer/director Joss Weldon didn't do that. As a result, The Avengers Assemble is so nice, clever, comic, and satisfying that it not only surpassed all my expectations, but it left me with a deep, unexpected feeling of pride.
Artists take a whack at Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow and the remainder of the Avengers team with paintings, posters and limited-edition prints being shown this weekend in Los Angeles.
A row about the merits of the blockbuster superhero film The Avengers Assemble has broken out on Twitter after Samuel L Jackson voiced his disappointment at a film review.
Combining the feature attractions of separate blockbusters, "The Avengers Assemble" was looking to at least surpass the first weekend gross of "Iron Man two," which pulled in a non-3D three-day total of $128 million in the work of this weekend years ago.
The victory was in that huge opening weekend. Also bleeding out was Lions gate’s "The Hunger Games," which crossed $380 million and could possibly surpass $400 thinking about it is still in the top after six weeks in theaters.

On the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking, its wreckage will become underwater cultural heritage protected by UNESCO, the organization's Paris headquarters said in an announcement on Thursday.

This year will mark 100 years since the tragedy, meaning that the hull will from now on be protected by the 2011
The Convention, ratified by 41 states, can only be applied to objects that sank over 100 years ago.

The Titanic, the largest and most luxurious ocean liner of its time, sank in international waters and no state has exceptional jurisdiction over the wreckage.

From now on states parties to the convention are entitled to prevent destruction, looting, sales and unsanctioned distribution of objects found at the shipwreck site. They are also entitled to take all measures they think about necessary to protect the sunken ship or be definite that the remains of the victims are treated with dignity.

The Titanic, with two, 200 people on board, departed from the British port of Southampton on April ten, 1912, for its first and last voyage from Europe to the U.S. On April 14, it struck an iceberg in the Atlantic and sank in the early hours of April 15. At least one, 496 people were killed in the world's greatest maritime tragedy, and some 306 bodies were recovered. Only 706 people were rescued.

A century has passed since the largest and the most luxurious passenger liner, the RMS Titanic, sank on its maiden voyage after crashing with a giant iceberg mid-Atlantic in 1912.

Over the years, scores of scientists and explorers worldwide have intensely studied the causes of disaster; umpteen numbers of new theories have been put forward. However, none claims to be concrete and unanimous so far.

The 46,000-ton ocean liner was thought about unsinkable but turned out to be the worst maritime catastrophe of all time. Before the midnight of April 14, 1912, it collided with an iceberg southeast of Cape Race, of its major compartments ruptured and the ship sank within a few hours.

It was carrying a total of two, 200 passengers, out of which only 700 (mostly first-class passengers) were saved and over one, 500 lost their lives.

The Titanic was still a mystery for common people till American filmmaker James Cameron came up with a fictional film on the real-time catastrophe in 1997. The film received worldwide acclaim, and that is when it caught the attention of increasingly researchers, as well as the common people.

Today it rests 12,500 deep down the sea water, around 370 miles south-southeast of the Newfoundland coast

Here are some unseen underwater expedition images released on the occasion of the disaster's 100th anniversary.

Recently, on its 100th anniversary, several artifacts of the RMS Titanic present in underwater expeditions were exhibited and auctioned. Also, a Titanic memorial cruise, made by the same company, retraced the same route in remembrance of the ill-fated ship.

Titanic Remains | Titanic images underwater

2012-04-17T00:18:00.000-07:00

Word of the new photograph! Searches to surge on "titanic remains," "real titanic images underwater and titanic may hold passengers."

Dr. James P. Delgado, the director of the Maritime Heritage Museum at the National Oceanic & Atmosphere Administration told: the phone that the way the boots are placed together makes a "compelling case" that they belonged to a body.

The scientist, who was responsible for mapping the shipwreck in the work of a 2010 expedition for NOAA, says that the picture was released in its full form (it was originally published to show boot) to serve as a reminder that the ship is an "underwater resting place", needs to be better protected and revered.

The newly published picture was first reported by the New York which also noted that not all Titanic specialists agree there's bodies at the site of the wreckage, first discovered in 1985. James Cameron, who directed the film "Titanic," & has explored the site multiple times, said he is seldom seen human remains: "We've seen shoes. We have seen pairs of shoes, which would strongly recommend there was a body there at point. But we have seldom seen any human remains."

Delgado said that the issue is more of "semantics." The researcher said of Cameron, "He's seen the pairs of shoes & clothing that is down there, & so when they see that, perhaps he is not seeing what they see as archeologists." They added, "When I see shoes together I see anyone who came to rest." Delgado added that when Titanic finder Robert Ballard first showed the photograph in 2004, "the room went silent." They said the explorers who looked at it could tell it had one time been a lost soul from the ship.

A bill introduced by Sen. John Kerry would fine-tune the Titanic Maritime Memorial Act of 1986 to protect the wreck from salvage & intrusive research. But since the ocean liner sank in international waters after hitting an iceberg on April 14, 1912, there are limits to what the U.S. can do.

Thing that is in Delgado's power: the undersea site, which they believe, ought to be treated as a museum and as hallowed ground. Noting that plenty of the ship's passengers were on their way to the U.S. to become American citizens, they said, there are some places that are so special they ought to take a different approach.

A newly released photograph from the North Atlantic site of the shipwrecked RMS Titanic shows proof of human remains, federal officials are saying.

In observance of the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking, a 2004 picture was reissued to the public in an outcropped version, which shows a coat & boots buried in the mud at the site two-and-a-half miles below the ocean's surface, where the legendary passenger liner now lies.

3-D release of the film Titanic past $2 billion mark

2012-04-15T22:28:00.000-07:00

LOS ANGELES (AP) James Cameron has shored up his position as king of the worldwide box office.

Cameron's 1997 blockbuster "Titanic" sailed beyond the $2 billion mark in lifetime ticket sales, thanks to a 3-D re-release of the film that was timed to the centennial of the ship's sinking.

Google project glass

2012-04-05T05:36:00.001-07:00

We have heard rumours that Google was working augmented reality eyeglasses that would display knowledge relevant to wearers as they go through their everyday process of Google project glass. Now Google itself has confirmed this as Google project glass, complete with a video of what they might be able to do.

The video is cold. You see someone beginning their day, Google project glass getting knowledge about subway closures, walking directions with heads-up display of turns to take, speaking to the Google project glass to make a reminder to buy concert tickets, speaking to take a picture, taking a phone call with video & more.

The reality is, well, they don’t know. The video is not showing the actual Google project glass in action but an idea of what they might be able to do. Even the images of people on the Google+ page that serves as a home for Project Glass are showing the actual.

Nick Belton from the New York Times reports there's several different prototypes actually being used & has spoken to some who have worn them. Person talks about taking a picture with them, but by using a button, not by speaking Google project glass.

So those glasses, perhaps they are prototypes or perhaps the actual functioning glasses are much more bulky.

Google project glass From the Image, perhaps of the largest questions will be, in the event that they do ever get sold, would you like them in black or white? I see both colors in the design models:

Washington Boy 9 year’s old, Writes Apology letter to Girl He Shot

2012-04-04T22:39:00.000-07:00

A 9-year-old boy in Bremerton, Wash. wrote a letter apologizing to a classmate who was seriously wounded after a gun discharged from his backpack, lodging a bullet in her backbone.

The handwritten letter was addressed to Amina Bowman, 8, who was released from the hospital on Tuesday. The boy's name has not been made public.

"I'm sorry I hurt you because I brought a gun to school. I did not mean for any to get hurt," the boy wrote. "I wish everyone was all right. I made a bad choice."

Six weeks after being airlifted to Harborview Medical Middle, small milestones mark Amina's recovery.

A taste of soup, those first steps, & a brownie milk shake after being discharged from the hospital are all progress that her sister posts on her Facebook page.

"What a great day!!!" Teri Bowman wrote under a picture of her smiling daughter before they came home from the hospital.

Amina was shot in the coursework of class at Armin Jahr Simple School in Bremerton.

"I made a bad choice. I was one time mournful, terrified & afraid & I did not solve my issue well," the boy told her in his letter. "I will stay away from guns."

The school was put in to immediate lockdown after the incident.

MaryLou Tucker, a parent of a student at the school, said the teacher in Amina's classroom did everything they could. "She had the babies sit, get underneath their desks & then made sure that the babies were accounted for," Tucker said.

The boy's prosecution will be deferred. His sister, Jamie Lee Chaffin, & her fella, Douglas L. Bauer, pleaded not guilty to third-degree assault & illegal possession of a firearm, according to ABC affiliate KOMO.

Amina's parents said she'll likely return to school in the fall.

Ashton Kutcher’s Skit At ACM Awards

2012-04-04T03:30:00.000-07:00

When Ashton Kutcher displayed up at the Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday night, they was supposedly there to hand out the female singer of the year award. However, they succeeded to take everyone's minds off the nominees for a couple of minutes, by display up wearing over-the-top cowboy gear & taking a stab at singing George Strait's "I Cross My Heart."

Well, some country stars didn't take this small act in a lighthearted manner. The artist to whom Kutcher familiarized the female singer award, Miranda Lambert, tweeted on Monday: "Was Ashton Kutcher manufacture fun of country or is it me?"
Turns out, it wasn't her. Singer Justin Moore, who records for the same label group as Taylor Swift, went as far as to call Kutcher a "douche" on his Twitter account. "I don't take care of people making a mockery of the way country artists dress," they clarified.
