En cuanto tuve en mis manos el libro, empecé a buscar que hacer. Había varias cosas que me gustaban pero no sé porqué me decidí a hacer un polo. Aviso a navegantes hay spoiler.

As soon as I got the book, I started to search things todo. There were several things I like, but I don’t know why I decided to make a polo shirt. Spoilers ahead.

El polo me parecía algo relativamente fácil de hacer y con los ojos cerrados me lancé a buscar tela. Hay llegó mi primer error. Elegí una tela de punto, maldito el día. Y encima por internet, así que no pude tocarla o sentirla ni nada.

I thought something easy to make and blindly I started to find fabric. Here comes my first error. I chose a knitted jersey, dam me. And I bought it through internet, so I couldn’t touch it or feel it.

Al final la tela llegó y en cuanto me puse a pasar el patrón me dí cuenta del error. Pero todavía me iba a dar más de un problema. La tela se movía como si tuviera vida propia. Trazar con el jaboncillo era difícil pero cuando me puse a coser me di cuenta de que era mucho peor que eso. Las telas tejidas necesitan un pedal especial para la máquina y agujas especiales para que sea fácil coserlas. Sin eso es una tortura china. Lección aprendida.

Finally the fabric arrived and immediately I started tracing my pattern and realized my mistake. It wasn’t the only problem. The fabric moved with a life on its own. Trace with the tailor chalk was challenging but when I started to sew. Knitted fabrics need an special foot for the machine and specific needles for them to be easy to sew. Without that, it is a bad torture. Lesson learned.

Nuevo comienzo| New beginning

Como siempre, no puedo negar el influjo de lo japonés en mi. Tengo una pasión por Japón. Al menos es algo que comparto con un montón de gente. En estos años he sido capaz de ir a Japón dos veces 🎊. Fue una experiencia soberbia… las dos veces.

As always, I can’t deny the Japanese influence in me. At least this is something I share with loads of people. During these last years I was able to visit Japan, twice. It was a wonderful experience, both times.

Pero bueno, me desvío del tema, la costura. Cuando empezó este confinamiento, empecé a quemar todo el entretenimiento. Netflix ya no tiene nada que enseñarme y hay un limite para lo que uno puede ver y disfrutar. Así que volví a la costura para llenar mi tiempo. Lo mágico empezó cuando me encontré con este libro.

But I’m digressing, focus on the sewing. When this lockdown happened, I started to burn all the entertainment. Netflix has no more anything for me and there is a limit to the amount of entertainment that one can absorbe. The magic started when I came across this book.

Podría contaros un montón de cosas sobre el pero casi mejor podéis ojearlo en la web en la que lo compre. Tienen hasta un video en Youtube para que le echéis un vistazo. Además, va a ser la base para mis siguientes posts. Os iré mostrando lo que he hecho de el poco a poco.

La refundacíon de Nego Otium

Hoy me he sentado de nuevo a trabajar en este Blog y con sorpresa veo que han pasado casi diez años desde la última entrada. El tiempo vuela y todo parece cambiar en un momento. Quizá los blogs ya no están de moda, y ahora todo el mundo se ha pasado a los video-blogs.

Today I’ve started to work in this blog again. I can see, quite surprisingly, that almost ten years have passed since my last entry. Time flies and everything seems to change in a dime. Maybe blogs are not in fashion anymore, and now the people prefers the vblogs instead.

Veo un montón de gente que todavía parece estar en este negocio, así que me preparo para volver a empezar. La verdad es que este blog me ayudó a mejorar y a seguir buscando los límites de las cosas que podía, y no podía, hacer.

I see a lot of people still in this business, so I’m preparing myself to start fresh. Honestly this blog helped me to improve my skills and to keep pushing the boundaries of what I can and couldn’t do.

Así es que voy a tratar un poco de explicar mi viaje y contar lo que tengo planeado para el futuro inmediato. Probablemente las cosas vuelvan a cambiar en un segundo, pero quiero registrar lo que me está pasando ahora.

So I’m going to explain a bit my voyage and what I have planned. Maybe things will change again in no time, but I want to log what is happening to me right now.

Empecé este blog viviendo en España. Llevaba un tiempo en el paro y me volví a la costura para no volverme loco. Japón fue el objetivo más lógico. Los kimonos no tienen esos complicados patrones que no hay humano que entienda. La verdad es que el kimono es engañosamente sencillo. Como los buenos video juegos es fácil de jugar pero difícil de conquistar.

I started this blog in Spain. I was for awhile unemployed and I turned myself into sewing to keep my sanity in check. Japan was the most logic option. Kimonos don’t have those complicated patterns nobody can understand. The truth is that kimonos are deceptively simple. As the best video games, easy to play but difficult to master.

En diciembre de 2011 dejé España para irme a vivir a Grecia y es aquí que el blog empieza a quedarse rezagado. Grecia fue una experiencia maravillosa e incluso traté de hacer uno de la experiencia pero no funcionó. Había perdido el gusto por el blog.

I left Spain in December 2011 to go to Greece y in that moment the blog started to fade away. Greece was a wonderful experience, and even try to make a blog for that experience. It didn’t work. I had lost the taste for blogging.

En 2013 me fui de Grecia para instalarme en Irlanda, donde todavía estoy. Volví a hacer cosas pero ya no tenía la necesidad de contarlas. Es aquí donde la pandemia golpea y después de unos meses encerrados volví a coger la máquina de coser con energía.

I left Greece in 2013 to come to Ireland, where I currently live. I turned again to sewing but I didn’t have the need to tell it. Here comes the pandemic and the lockdown. After a few months social distancing, I took my sewing machine with a great deal of energy.

Los kimonos fueron siempre para mi algo privado, para vestir en casa. En Irlanda descubrí una cosa que tiene el carácter irlandés: Haz lo que te salga de dentro. En España tendemos más a tener un poco de sentido del ridículo. Eso mezclado con el cierto punto retro que puedes ver en la calle me hizo que mirara de nuevo a la costura. En esta ocasión me dije voy a hacer algo que pueda vestir.

Kimonos for me were always something private, to wear indoors. In Ireland I’ve discovered something that they have in their character: Do as you please. In Spain I think we have a tendency to fear ridicule.That and a certain vintage style made me revisit my sewing style. This time I’m going to do something I can wear actually outside home.

Y aquí estoy, empezando esta nueva aventura. He cambiado el subtítulo del blog y solo espero que alguien se quede a verlo.

So here I am, starting this new adventure. I’ve changed the tag line of the blog and I hope you guys stick around to see it.

El pañuelo de Maro Maro' scarf

No esperaba hacer ningún encargo mientras estuviera en Grecia, pero parece que hasta en esto van mejor las cosas aquí. La hermana de mi compi me encargó un chal shibori para su madre. Y este es el resultado. Por cierto, tengo que recomendar una marca de decolorantes y tintes que me tiene fascinado. Se llama Rimo, es de fabricación griega y decolora hasta el más pequeño resto de color, lo único malo que es tan bueno que decolora hasta las partes atadas. Pero bueno el tinte si se comporta como esperábamos.

Y por fin, aquí está el resultado de todo el esfuerzo. Tuve algún problema a la hora de apretar las costuras y quizá por eso no se ven los dibujos con la intensidad que deberían. Pero no está del todo mal.
And finally, here is the result of all the effort. I had some problem when tightening the seams and maybe that's why the motives are not with the intensity they should. But it is not too bad.

Hola a todos. Después de muchos meses de silencio en los que me pasó de todo y nada relacionado con el mundo del kimono, vuelvo a la carga. Este nuevo proyecto es una camiseta para Niko.
Hi Everybody. After such a long time, in wich I lived a lot of experiences no related to kimono world, I'm bach on duty. This new project is a T-shirt for my dear friend Niko.

No sé si se verá muy bien, pero ahí aparece el diseño y las puntadas ya preparadas para atar. Son básicamente tres rectángulos formando una diagonal con unas curvas a cada lado para acompañar.
I do not know if they look great, but there appears the design and stitches ready-to bind. There are basically three rectangles forming a diagonal an then two curves on each side to follow the diagonal.

Deshaciendo un haori II Unmaking a haori II

Bienvenidos a la segunda parte. Hoy vamos a ver cómo están montadas las mangas. Lo primero fue desmontar los forros.

Welcome to the second part. Today we will see how they are fitted sleeves. The first step was removing the lining.

Esta es la unión del cuerpo y las mangas. Podéis ver las puntadas. Una cosa que me pareció importante. Las partes estaban dobladas y planchadas antes de cosidas.

This is the union of body and sleeves. You can see the stitches. One thing that seemed important. The sides were folded and ironed before sewn.

Esta es una imagen del cómo está cosido el forro. A ver si lo explico bien. Se coge la tela de la manga y se dobla a la mitad y ya tenemos la manga. Cogemos el forro de la misma medida y lo doblamos a la mitad. Ponemos uno encima de otro y cosemos.

This is a picture of how the lining is sewn. Let's see if I can explain it properly. Take the fabric of the sleeve and fold it in half and now you already have the sleeve. We take a piece of lining with the same size and fold in half. We put one above the other and sew.

Entonces solo tenemos que darle la vuelta y Voila, la manga forrada. Es el sistema más simple y más efectivo que he visto en mi vida para forrar. I present the image of the 1st Kimono Jack in Gijón. As you can see in the picture, the event will take place on May 15 at 11:00 am at the Cerro de Santa Catalina (L'Atalya for the playos). We will be near of "Elogio del Horizonte" a sculpture from Chillida. It will be an event to see us, make us some photos and have an excuse to wear our outfits. Going to be an entertaining morning. Deshaciendo un haori I Unmaking a haori I

Algunas veces sólo puedes aprender deshaciendo las cosas. En este caso voy a tratar de aprender deshaciendo un haorí. Este fue el primero que compré, el vendedor de ebay me timo vilmente, y el haori estaba mucho más estropeado de lo que aparecía en las fotos. Esa fue la principal razón para deshacerlo ahora, y no mi haorí de Ruy japan que adoro (eso se perdió el mal vendedor).

Sometimes you can only learn things by undone. In this case I will try to learn about haori undoing. This was the first one I bought, the seller of ebay scam me viciously, and this haori was much more damaged than it appeared in the photos. That was the main reason to undo it now, not my Ruyjapan's haori I love (You miss this, you bad seller).

Lo primero que desmonté fue el cuello. Si observáis la foto, el cuello llega hasta el final. Siempre me llamó la atención los cuidadosos remates de los cuellos en los kimonos y haori. En este caso lo hieceron así.

The first thing I unsewn was the neck. If you watch the picture, the neck comes to the end. I was always shock for the end of the necks in kimonos and haori. In this case, they made it in this way:

El cuello ya descosido/ Unsewn neck

El cuello desdoblado es cosido hasta el final, sobrepasando el delantero unos 22 cm. Después el sobrante es doblado sobre sí mismo y queda cubierto al cerrar el cuello a la mitad y coser por la cara interna.

Abierto a la mitad/ Open the half

The split collar is sewn till the end, passing the front panel about 22 cm. After that, the remainder is folded over itself and is covered by closing the collar in half and sewing the inside part.

Otra cosa que llamó poderosamente mi atención fueron las puntadas. Los kimonos me parecían prendas que debían llevar puntadas muy finas, pero no es así. Este haorí llevaba las puntadas del cuello justo sobre el doblez y eran puntadas de 3 mm separadas por unos 5 mm. Y digo puntadas no pespuntes ni otro tipo complicado. Metes el hilo, lo sacas 5mm más alla y lo vuelves a meter 3mm después. Eso sí, todas las partes que iban a ser cosidas estaban cuidadosamente dobladas sobre sí mismas.

Another thing that caught my eye were the stitches. The kimono garments seemed to be carrying very fine stitches, but it is not. This haori had the stitches of the collar just above the fold and stitch were 3 mm long and ther were separated by about 5 mm. I say stitches and no other complicated stitching mode. You put the thread, take it out beyond 5mm and then Enter it again 3mm later. Of course, all parts that would be sewn were neatly folded over themselves.

Hola a todos de nuevo. Estaba pensando en el kimono jack que vamos a celebrar y se me ocurrió que sería buena idea estrenar un conjunto para tal evento. El paro manda así que me voy a centrar en la producción casera. Estas son mis ideas. Tengo un sobrante de tela suficiente para hacer un kimono como el de Pedro.

Hello to all again. It was thinking about kimono jack that we are going to celebrate and it was happened to me that would be good idea to release a new outfit for such event. Unemployment rules so I am going to think about homemade production. These are my ideas. I have a fabric leftover sufficient to do kimono like the Pedro's one.

El problema de esta combinación es que solo tengo dos haori, uno en crepé negro y otro de lana azul.

The problem in this combination is that I only have two haori, one crepé in black and another one in blue wool.

Ahora bien, tengo dos rollos de tela esperándome para que haga algo con ellos. Los dos son de lana en azul marino, uno liso y el otro con cuadros de colores. La pregunta con cuál me hago el kimono y con cuál el haori. Aquí van los ejemplos.

Aquí tenemos el ejemplo contrario, haori liso y el kimono con los cuadros. No sé si en las fotos se aprecia bien, pero cada línea de la tela es de un color distinto azul, fucsia, rojo, amarillo.

Here we have the opposite example, plain haori and kimono with the squares. I do not know if in the photos it is appraised well, but each line of the fabric is in different colors, red, yellow, blue, fucsia.

Hola a todos. Después de estas navidades de estrés (los regalos de toda la familia fueron hechos a mano, par de kimonos, un nagoya obi bordado, infinidad de pañuelos y camisetas shibori) me decidí a darme unas vaciones de mí mismo.

Hello to all. After these Christmas of stress (the gifts of all the family were handmade, a pair of kimonos, a nagoya obi embroidered, an infinity of handkerchiefs and t-shirts shibori) I was decided to take a break from myself.

Y ahora vuelvo con una nueva sección que creo que encontraréis interesante. Se va a llamar SINCRETISMOS PERVERSOS y voy a intentar crear combinaciones un poco locas de material para echarnos unas risas e incluso obtener alguna idea rompedora. ¿Quién sabe?

Este año estoy pensando en organizar un kimono jack en Gijón. De momento somos 7 personas pero si alguien más tiene el gusto de asistir que se ponga en contacto conmigo. Será una cosa muy sencilla: Vernos, pasear, comentar, incluso si la gente se anima un picnic. La fecha en concreto la iremos viendo según se apunte la gente. A ver si podemos solucionarlo. Cualquier sugerencia es bienvenida. Espero que os animeis.

This year I am thinking about organizing kimono jack in Gijón. At the moment we are 7 people but if somebody wants to attend please get in touch. It will be a very simple thing: To see us, to take a walk, to comment, even if people animate a picnic. The date in particular we will be it seeing according to scores people. Hoy tengo que empezar dando las gracias a Lorea, porque siempre me aporta un montón de buenas ideas con sus comentarios y su blog. Había comprado varios obis negros y no sabía muy bien que hacer con ellos. Uno fue campo de pruebas de mis sádicos experimentos como pasarlo por decolorante o, cuando el negro intenso se resistía, directamente por lejía. Hasta que llegó la entrada del bordado sagara. Inmediatamente me puse manos a la obra y este es el resultado.

Today I have to start by thanking Lorea, because she always gives me a lot of good ideas with her comments and her blog. I had purchased several black obis and I did not quite know what to do with them. One was a testing ground for my sadistic experiments likepass it trough a bleaching agent or when he resisted intense black, I did bleach it directly. Until he reached the entrance Sagara embroidery. I immediately got to work and this is the result.

Usé el bordado sagara para dar unos toque de color al obi. Están la niebla en azul, y el resto de colores con arcos, hojas y flores. No sobrebordé todo el obi porque en la tela teníamos las figuras ya en el tejido y taparlo sería pena.

I used the embroidering sagara to give some touch of color to obi. They are the fog in blue, and the rest of colors with arcs, leaves and flowers. I did not sobreembroider all obi because in the fabric we already had the figures in the weave and to cover it would be pain.

Pañuelos Shibori Scarves

Hoy os quiero presentar los pañuelos que he estado haciendo para esta época navideña. Son pañuelos de seda (Pongee 5) teñidos con distintas técnicas de shibori. Normalmente van en un solo color pero en algunos he hecho sobre teñidos para modificar el efecto.

Today I want to present the scarves I've been doing for the holiday season. There are silk scarves (pongee 5) stained with different techniques of shibori. They are usually one color but in some of then I've done an overdyed to alter the effect.

El kimono de Pedro Pedro's Kimono

Hoy he terminado el kimono de Pedro. Fue ponerle las últimas puntadas y lanzarme al blog a colgarlo.
Today I finished the kimono of Pedro. Was to put the last stitches and jump to the blog to upload it.

La tela es una cretona de algodón. Ya sé que es una tela de tapicería, pero Pedro no va ir a ver al emperador del Japón y estamos en medio de una crisis económica inmensa. Así que reciclé este estampado en verde de rayas guapísimo. A mí me gusta mucho.

The fabric is a cotton chintz. I know it's an upholstery fabric, but Pedro is not going to go to visit the Emperor of Japan and we are in the midst of a vast economic crisis. So I recycle this print handsome green stripes fabric. I like a lot.

Pedro has 12 years but he did not want a child kimono style belt sewn to the neck and open sleeves. So I did it like an adult one but smaller. As the come and get the first pictures I'll show it.

Pedro tiene 12 años pero no quería un kimono de estilo infantil con el cinturón cosido al cuello y las mangas abiertas. Así que se lo hice como si fuera para un adulto pero en pequeño. En cuanto venga a por el y consiga las primeras fotos os lo enseño.

Yo no sé muy bien si es esa pose desenfadada, o la persona que coloreo la yukata... pero lo cierto es que esta foto me tiene cautivado. Creo que es una foto bastante preparada por un occidental, fijaos como va a servir "sake" en un tazón de arroz (menuda borrachera), y además estas cámaras antiguas necesitan un tiempo muy largo de exposición. Pero el resultado es fantástico. No es una figura hierática. Es una mujer viva y normal en un momento relajado.

I do not know whether it is the casual pose, or the person that coloring the yukata ... but the truth is this photo has me intrigued. I think it's a picture quite ready for a Westerner, look how she will serve "sake" in a bowl of rice (what a hangover), and also these old camersa need a highly large time of exposure. But the result is fantastic. There is no hieratic figure. It's a normal woman alive and in a relaxed moment.

Hello everyone. Today we inaugurate a section, my the top 5 women in Kimono.

Aquí tenemos a Brisa con un komon de lana en gris plomizo o azul, dependiendo del monitor. Lo que más me gusta de esta foto es la expresión de su cara. Era la primera vez que se ponía un kimono y aún así transmitía cierta serenidad. Cierto que el kitsuke no es el más adecuado, hubo que renunciar al ohashori por sus proporciones pero el conjunto es realmente adorable.

Here is a Brisa with a wool komon leaden gray or blue, depending on the monitor. What I like about this picture is the expression on his face. It was the very first time for her in kimono and still transmitting certain serenity. Actually the Kitsuke is not the right one,we must renounce to ohashori instead of their proportions but the set is really adorable.

Después de un tiempo de inactividad, mi kimono de invierno forrado me está llevando más tiempo del que desearía, os presento mi última creación. Se trata de un hanhaba obi.

After a timeout, my winter linned kimono is taking me longer than I wish, I present my latest creation. This is a hanhaba obi.

El tejido es un lienzo moreno. Este es un tejido duro ideal para hacer un obi más rígido y resistente a la torsión. Para endurecerlo un poco más lleva una entretela adhesiva. La tela está teñida con la técnica del shibori de cuerda a diferencia de mi anterior trabajo la tela se tiñó en azul primero. Después se aplicó el atado. Una vez atada se decoloró para asegurar la mayor penetración del tinte para teñirla después de marrón. Y este es el resultado. Espero que os guste. No hace falta deciros que no lo voy a usar así que si lo queréis es vuestro.

The fabric is a brown canvas. This is a hard tissue, obi ideal, for a more rigid and resistant to twisting. To harden a bit more carries a fusible interfacing. Flor de agua, un posible mon / Water lily a maybe mon

Esta es la flor de agua, es un símbolo que se usa mucho en la cultura tradicional asturiana. Su origen es céltico y lo podréis encontrar grabado en todo el arco atlantico (Galicia, Asturias, la Bretaña francesa, Gales, Escocia e Irlanda) en un montón de superficies y utensilios. Y también, por la fotos en el blog de Lorea, lo podemos encontrar en otras partes de España.

This is the water lily is a symbol that is widely used in the traditional culture of Asturias. Its origin is Celtic and what you can find recorded in the whole arc Atlantic (Galicia, Asturias, french Brittany, Wales, Scotland and Ireland) in a lot of surfaces and utensils. And also, according to the photos on the blog of Lorea, can be found in other parts of Spain.

En Asturias tiene un significado que no he visto en ningún otro lado. Como en todas la tierras célticas, la noche de San Juan (el solsticio de verano) tiene un sentido de purificación y de renacer. Cuando amanece y los rayos de sol tocan por primera vez el agua se consideraba que ese agua estaba bendita. Por eso se llama flor en el sentido de la más pura, la más perfecta. Ese primer agua se recogía de las fuentes y para que nadie cometiera la torpeza de volver a recoger el agua se adornaban las fuentes con flores y ramas de árboles mientras se cantaban canciones. Una de las más conocidas hace referencia a una princesa que va a recoger la flor del agua y se encuentra con un mozo del que se enamora y, suponemos que gracias al agua, consiguen casarse y tener dos hijos que gobernarían en toda la España. Así que el agua es mágica y cura enfermedades, trae amores y no es que directamente conceda deseos pero parece que se hacen realidad cuando la bebes. El símbolo representa ese agua bendita.

Ultimamente he descubierto el placer de teñir la tela con la técnica del shibori. En Japón se denomina shibori a una serie de técnicas para realizar reservas en la tela mediante presión. Puede ser cosiendo, anundando, frunciendo, enrrollando, plegando,etc. Los diseños más elabarados pueden llevar más de una de estas técnicas consiguiendo unos efectos sorprendentes.

Recently I discovered the pleasure of dyeing cloth with shibori technique. in Japan shibori Is called to a number of techniques to make reservations for the fabric under pressure. It can be sewn, Anund, knitting, by wrapping, folding, etc. The elabarated designs may take more than one of these techniques getting some surprising effects.

Hoy voy a teñir una camiseta siguiendo el maki age shibori. Para ello necesitaré: Una camiseta blanca (si es de otro color puedes jugar con la combinación de colores y obtener un buen número de efectos), plantillas para la reservas, papel de calco, aguja, hilo y tinte.

I have chosen a DVD as a template. I will sketch circles. For the smallest I used a bottle of dressing that has a smaller circumference.

Por fín he finalizado la confección de mi primer nagoya obi. El trabajo fue laborioso pero creo que mereció la pena. Este es el resultado:

Había comprado la tela hace tiempo y no me decía a hacerlo. La tenía criando polvo en el armario. Pero encontré un post en inmortal geisha con buenas instrucciones para hacerlo y no me pude resistir. Este primero está totalmente confeccionado a mano. Todas y cada una de la puntadas, cada pespunte es manual. En el próximo quizá me modernice y lo haga a máquina.

He had bought the fabric for some time and told me not to do so. The was gathering dust in the closet. But I found a post on immortal geisha with good instructions for doing so and I could not resist. This first one is completely handcrafted. Each and every one of the stitches is manual. In the next maybe I modernize myself and I'll do it with the machine.
