Malunggay : The Miracle Vegetable

“Malunggay” in the Philippines,

“Sajina” in the Indian Subcontinent, and

“Moringa” in English, it is a popular tree.

Many Asians use the leaves of Malunggay (Sajina) like spinach and also the fruit it produces as a vegetable, like asparagus. It only used to be known as a vegetable for lactating mothers. But new scientific studies say that malunggay’s medicinal and market possibilities.

Touted by scientists as a “miracle vegetable,” malunggay has been promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the past 20 years as a low-cost health enhancer in poor countries around the globe.

Malunggay trees are generally grown in the backyards. The small, oval, dark-green leaves are famous vegetable ingredient in soup, fish and chicken dishes. Scientifically, called ‘Moringa oelifera.’ this vegetable, despite its legendary potentials, is still relatively unknown.

“The sale of all forms of vitamins, minerals, and health supplements is a big business,” points out Moringa Zinga, an American company that promotes and sells malunggay products in capsules. “If you are a company selling hundreds of nutritional products, why would you sell a product that will wipe out all your other products? This is true for the pharmaceutical industries as well. These industries would rather that the general public remains ignorant about the moringa leaves.”

According to the Biotechnology Program Office of the Department of Agriculture, the malunggay has been found by biochemists and molecular anthropologists to be rich in vitamins C and A, iron, and high density lipoprotein or good cholesterol.

Due to its high calcium content (four times the calcium in milk), lactating mothers in the Philippines are often advised to consume malunggay leaves to produce more milk for their babies. The young malunggay leaves are being boiled and drink as tea.

Malunggay leaves are loaded with nutrients. Gram for gram, malunggay leaves also contain two times the protein in milk. Likewise, it contains three times the potassium in bananas and four times the vitamin A in carrots.

Health nutritionists claim that an ounce of malunggay has the same Vitamin C content as seven oranges. An important function of vitamin C not known to many is its being an antioxidant. In fact, it has been recognized and accepted by the US Food and Drug Administration as one of the four dietary antioxidants, the others being vitamin E, beta-carotene and selenium. (A dietary oxidant is a substance in food that significantly decreases the adverse effects of harmful chemicals).

There are more health benefits. Vivencio Mamaril, of the Bureau of Plant Industry, told a national daily that in India, malunggay is used in treating various ailments. A 2001 study in India has found that the fresh root of the young tree can be used to treat fever. Asthmatics are advised to drink the infusion from the roots of the plant.

Tender malunggay leaves also reduce phlegm and are administered internally for scurvy and catarrhal conditions, while the flowers are used to heal inflammation of the tendons and abscesses. Unripe pods of malunggay are also reported to prevent intestinal worms, while the fruit also prevents eye disorders.

Other studies have shown that eating malunggay fruits can lead to higher semen count. This is good news for men who are having problems in siring children. They can now count on the malunggay to cork its magic on them.

Because of its nutritional content, malunggay strengthens the immune system, restores skin condition, controls blood pressure, re.ieves headaches and migraines, manages the sugar level thereby preventing diabetes, reduces inflammations and arthritis pains, restricts the growth of tumors, and heals ulcers. This information comes from Dr. Kumar Pati, an Indian doctor who is an expert in natural medicine.

The “next big thing” in Philippine agriculture. That is how the agriculture department considers malunggay. Malunggay can save lives, increase incomes, generate millions of jobs, utilize vast tracts of idle agricultural lands, make the Philippines globally competitive, impact local and international market, and help attain socioeconomic equity,” explained Alice Ilaga, director of the DA’s Biotechnology Program.

Besides being sold in the public market as a vegetable, is there really a market for malunggay products? “The Philippines is currently in the midst of developing the local market for malunggay and its products,” said a statement released by Biotechnology Program, which aggressively aims to develop the agribusiness potentials of various crops as part of the government’s poverty-alleviation program. “Despite being behind other countries such as India and Nicaragua, the Philippines’ malunggay industry is on its way to becoming a global competitor.”

In a press statement, Ilaga reported that the Nutrition Center of the Philippines is setting its sights on fortifying different types of food. “Given its nutritional value, it can be utilized in fortifying sauces, juices, milk, bread, and most importantly, instant noodles,” Ilaga says.

According to Ilaga, a multinational food company reportedly has expressed keen interest in putting up a processing plant in the Philippines for this purpose. “A noodle company is also eyeing malunggay for bio-fortification of noodles as part of its commitment to support the program to fight malnutrition, which is prevalent in the countryside,” she added.

The seeds of malunggay contain 40% oil, which is considered excellent massage oil. As part of its program to promote biotechnology, the agriculture department has strategically positioned itself for the commercial planting of seeds for malunggay oil production.

“The Philippines can penetrate the international market in producing malunggay oil from its seeds using advance technology to extract oil from enzymes,” Ilaga disclosed.

One local company that is leading in malunggay production is SECURA International. After entering into malunggay production for more than a year, it expects a bright future for the malunggay industry.

In an interview with a news dispatch, SECURA president Danny Manayaga admits that for the country to really take advantage of the market, it should first ensure that there is enough supply to support it. “‘The market is developing, but up to now, we still don’t know the extent of this market because we have not yet defined our capacity to produce malunggay,” he disclosed.

“We are involved with contract growers from different towns all over the country such as Valencia in Negros Oriental, Masinloc and Botolan in Zambales, Alaminos and Infanta in Pangasinan, and Bamban in Tarlac, which accounts for 150 hectares of our malunggay supply for our current market but it is not enough to sustain the demands for other products such as moringa oil,” Manayaga said.

SECURA needs at least 20,000 hectares to be able to support the available market for malunggay products. Currently, it is involved in processing dehydrated malunggay leaves to produce tea and as an additive to other medicinal plants to produce herbal tea. “This is the only active market that is running for malunggay now,” Manayaga said.

Unknown to many Filipinos, malunggay has the ability to purify water. “The crushed moringa seeds can clear very turbid water,” said Dr. John Sutherland, of Leicester University’s Department of Environmental Technology. He added that powdered malunggay seeds are appropriate for water purification in rural areas of tropical countries.

Planting malunggay trees can also help stabilize soil and contribute to fight against deforestation. The malunggay tree is highly resistant to drought and needs little care. It is fast-growing and lives for average of 50 years. Each tree can produce approximately 10,000 seeds a year. It also makes an excellent fuel and fertilizer.

A tropical species, malunggay can tolerate temperatures up to 48 degrees Centigrade, but 15 degrees to 35 degrees Centigrade is considered best. It grows in areas with annual rainfall of 760 to 2250 millimeters.

Is planting malunggay profitable? According to Ilaga, for a hectare of malunggay, the estimated net income per year is P150,000.

TOSINO (SALTED PORK)

Ingredients:

Pork
Salt
Sugar salitre
Utensils:
Kitchen knife
Bowl with cover
Measuring spoon

Procedure:

1. Slice pork into 1 cm. thickness.

2. For every kg. of meat, mix the following ingredients and rub on both sides of the pork;11/2 tbsp. salt, 4-5 tbsp. sugar, 1/3 tsp. Salitre.

3. Place salted pork in a clean covered container and keep in a cool place or in a refrigerator for 3-5 days.

4. Wash a little and cook. Tosino will last for 1/2 month when kept in a refrigerator.

1. BE A GOAL SETTER.

What do you want to accomplish? Do you want to save for college educations for your children? A new car? A new home? You can have whatever you want, but you must want it enough to do the things that have to be done to get it. Whatever your goal, write it down and set a target date for reaching it. Divide the time period into blocks of achievement that are reachable. Work consistently toward accomplishing each day, each week, each month what you set out to do. Goal-setting is a must in every area of life. Little is ever accomplished without definite goals.

2. BE A LIST MAKER.

Each evening list all the things you want to get done the following day. That gives you an organized approach to each day. As each task is finished, mark it off your list. It is amazing how much gets done when one works with a “things-to-do” list. Also, have a notebook listing appointments, potential clients, repeat clients, and referrals, and keep it with you at all times. You will be adding to it constantly.

3. BE ENTHUSIASTIC.

Enthusiasm is the high-octane “fuel” that salespeople run on. Enthusiasm generates its own energy. Energy and good health are synonymous with busy, happy people, people who are achieving.

4. RECOGNIZE THAT THE MAGIC WORD IN SALES IS “ASK”.

She will most likely respect you and do business with you.

6. SCHEDULE TIME WISELY.

A schedule is the roadmap by which salespeople travel. It takes the frustration out of the day. It assures that the necessary things get done and get done on time. Plan your work then work your plan.

7. BE POSITIVE IN YOUR ATTITUDE.

Success in sales, as in all areas of life is 90 percent attitude and 10 percent aptitude. All of us must work at developing habits of constructive thinking. I am proud to be a salesperson. Sales make the wheels of our economy turn. Bernard Baruch, advisor to several presidents, is quoted as saying, “If every salesperson sat down and took no orders for twenty-four hours, it would bankrupt our country!” Every company that manufactures any kind of product depends upon salespeople to move that product. 8. HAVE AN OFFICE AREA.

Most direct salespeople work from their own homes, but it is essential to have a place where you can work in a organized and efficient manner. 9. BE INVOLVED.

The Atom

The Bohr Model of the atom consists of a central nucleus composed of neutrons and protons surrounded by a number of orbital electrons equal to the number of protons.

Protons are positively charged, while neutrons have no charge. Each has a mass of about 1 atomic mass unit or amu. Electrons are negatively charged and have mass of 0.00055 amu.

The number of protons in a nucleus determines the element of the atom. For example, the number of protons in uranium is 92 while the number in neon is 10. The proton number is often referred to as Z.

An element may have several isotopes. An isotope of an element is comprised of atoms containing the same number of protons as all other isotopes of that element, but each isotope has a different number of neutrons than other isotopes of that element. Isotopes may be expressed using the nomenclature Neon-20 or 20Ne10, where 20 represents the combined number of neutrons and protons in the atom (often referred to as the mass number A), and 10 represents the number of protons (the atomic number Z).

While many isotopes are stable, others are not. Unstable isotopes normally release energy by undergoing nuclear transformations (also called decay) through one of several radioactive processes described later in this module.

Elements are arranged in the periodic table with increasing Z. Radioisotopes are arranged by A and Z in the chart of the nuclides.

Radiation

Radiation is energy transmitted through space in the form of electromagnetic waves or energetic particles. Electromagnetic radiation, like light or radio waves, has no mass or charge. The following chart shows the electromagnetic spectrum.

This training is concerned with radiation that has sufficient energy to remove electrons from atoms in materials through which the radiation passes. This process is called ionization, and the high frequency electromagnetic waves and energetic particles that can produce ionizations are called ionizing radiations. Examples of ionizing radiation include:

· alpha particle radiation

· beta particle radiation

· neutrons

· gamma rays

· x-rays

Nonionizing radiations are not energetic enough to ionize atoms and interact with materials in ways that create different hazards than ionizing radiation. Examples of nonionizing radiation include:

· microwaves

· visible light

· radio waves

· TV waves

· ultraviolet light

Radioactive Decay

The atomic structure for certain isotopes of elements is naturally unstable. Radioactivity is the natural and spontaneous process by which the unstable atoms of an isotope of an element transform or decay to a different state and emit or radiate excess energy in the form of particles or waves. These emissions are energetic enough to ionize atoms and are called ionizing radiation. Depending on how the nucleus loses this excess energy, either a lower energy atom of the same form results or a completely different nucleus and atom is formed.

A given radioactive isotope decays through a specific transformation or set of transformations. The type of emissions, along with the energy of the emissions, that result from the radioactive decay are unique to that isotope. For instance, an atom of phosphorus-32 decays to an atom of non-radioactive sulfur-32, accompanied by the emission of a beta particle with an energy up to 1.71 million electron-volts.

The following sections describe the radiations associated with the radioactive decay of the radioisotopes most commonly used in research at Princeton University.

Alpha Particle Radiation

An alpha particle consists of two neutrons and two protons ejected from the nucleus of an atom. The alpha particle is identical to the nucleus of a helium atom. Examples of alpha emitters are radium, radon, thorium, and uranium.

Because alpha particles are charged and relatively heavy, they interact intensely with atoms in materials they encounter, giving up their energy over a very short range. In air, their travel distances are limited to no more than a few centimeters. As shown in the following illustration, alpha particles are easily shielded against and can be stopped by a single sheet of paper.

Since alpha particles cannot penetrate the dead layer of the skin, they do not present a hazard from exposure external to the body.

However, due to the very large number of ionizations they produce in a very short distance, alpha emitters can present a serious hazard when they are in close proximity to cells and tissues such as the lung. Special precautions are taken to ensure that alpha emitters are not inhaled, ingested or injected.

Beta Particle Radiation

A beta particle is an electron emitted from the nucleus of a radioactive atom .Examples of beta emitters commonly used in biological research are: hydrogen-3 (tritium), carbon-14,phosphorus-32, phosphorus-33, and sulfur-35.

Beta particles are much less massive and less charged than alpha particles and interact less intensely with atoms in the materials they pass through, which gives them a longer range than alpha particles. Some energetic beta particles, such as those from P-32, will travel up to several meters in air or tens of mm into the skin, while low energy beta particles, such as those from H-3, are not capable of penetrating the dead layer of the skin. All beta emitters, depending on the amount present, can pose a hazard if inhaled, ingested or absorbed into the body. In addition, energetic beta emitters are capable of presenting an external radiation hazard, especially to the skin.

Bremsstrahlung

An important consideration in shielding beta particle radiation is the ability of beta particles to produce a secondary radiation called bremsstrahlung. Bremsstrahlung are x-rays produced when beta particles or other electrons decelerate while passing near the nuclei of atoms. The intensity of bremsstrahlung radiation is proportional to the energy of the beta particles and the atomic number of the material through which the betas are passing.

Consequently, bremsstrahlung radiation is generally not a concern for lower energy beta emitters such as carbon-14 and sulfur-35, but the higher energy betas from phosphorus-32 can produce significant bremsstrahlung, especially when passing through shielding materials such as lead. Lower atomic number materials such as Plexiglas are preferred shielding materials for high energy emitters such as phosphorus-32.

Gamma Ray Radiation

A gamma ray is a packet (or photon) of electromagnetic radiation emitted from the nucleus during radioactive decay and occasionally accompanying the emission of an alpha or beta particle. Gamma rays are identical in nature to other electromagnetic radiations such as light or microwaves but are of much higher energy.

Examples of gamma emitters are cobalt-60, zinc-65, cesium-137, and radium-226.

Like all forms of electromagnetic radiation, gamma rays have no mass or charge and interact less intensively with matter than ionizing particles. Because gamma radiation loses energy slowly, gamma rays are able to travel significant distances. Depending upon their initial energy, gamma rays can travel tens or hundreds of meters in air.

X-Ray Radiation

Like a gamma ray, an x-ray is a packet (or photon) of electromagnetic radiation emitted from an atom, except that the x-ray is not emitted from the nucleus. X-rays are produced as the result of changes in the positions of the electrons orbiting the nucleus, as the electrons shift to different energy levels.

Examples of x-ray emitting radioisotopes are iodine-125 and iodine-131.

X-rays can be produced during the process of radioactive decay or as bremsstrahlung radiation. Bremsstrahlung radiation are x-rays produced when high-energy electrons strike a target made of a heavy metal, such as tungsten or copper. As electrons collide with this material, some have their paths deflected by the nucleus of the metal atoms. This deflection results in the production of x-rays as the electrons lose energy. This is the process by which an x-ray machine produces x-rays.

Like gamma rays, x-rays are typically shielded using very dense materials such as lead or other dense metals.

X-rays particularly can present a hazard from exposures external to the body.

Radiation Measurement

Quantity

The quantity of radioactive material present is generally measured in terms of activity rather than mass, where activity is a measurement of the number of radioactive disintegrations or transformations an amount of material undergoes in a given period of time. Activity is related to mass, however, because the greater the mass of radioactive material, the more atoms are present to undergo radioactive decay.

The two most common units of activity are the Curie or the Becquerel (in the SI system).

1 Curie (Ci) = 3.7 x10¹⁰ disintegrations per second (dps)

1 Becquerel (Bq) = 1 disintegration per second (dps).

Obviously, 1 Curie is a large amount of activity, while 1 Becquerel is a small amount. In the typical Princeton University laboratory, millicurie and microcurie (or kilo and MegaBecquerel) amounts of radioactive material are used.

1 millicurie = 2.2 x 10⁹ disintegrations per minute (dpm) = 3.7 x 10⁷ Bq = 37 MBq

1 microcurie = 2.2 x 10⁶ dpm = 3.7 x 10⁴ Bq = 37 kBq

Intensity

For the purposes of radiation protection, it is not always useful to describe the potential hazard of a radioactive material in terms of its activity. For instance, 1 millicurie of tritium a centimeter from the body poses a much different hazard than 1 millicurie of phosphorus-32 a centimeter from the body.

Consequently, it is often preferable to measure radiation by describing the effect of that radiation on the materials through which it passes. The three main quantities which describe radiation field intensity are shown in the following table:

Half-Life

I’ve sold my printing business about four years ago. Even though owning a business has been inwardly and outwardly rewarding, I have been enjoying the freedom of not having alarm clocks, employees, and meeting customer demands. In the past, I was easily taken by people who offer investment schemes meant to deliver immediate returns. Some of my hard earned funds were entrusted to new acquaintances, investors in water, restaurant, start-up businesses—you name it. The result? Why women need to become actively involved in investing?

· No glass ceiling. This corporate myth states that due to gender, women experience limited movement up the corporate ladder. Investing however is gender neutral.

· No limits on income. Investing money makes for unlimited returns, unlike the salary you earn as an employee. “Studies show that women, with the same education and experience as their male counterparts, earn about 74 cents for every dollar their male peers earn,” said Kim Kiyosaki.

· Avoiding dependency. Regarding the highlighted statistics, is this how you see your future?

· Increased self-esteem. With each and every accomplishment, confidence increases. This increased level of confidence leads to increased levels of self-esteem. Higher self-esteem leads to further opportunities, which leads to freedom.

· Control your time. Often women find the time elusive between work, child care, making meals, cleaning. The list is endless. As an investor, you are in control of your time. You can invest full or part time, work from home or an office.

· Statistics. Do you want to be dependent on another person or employer and have this person make your financial decisions?

Henry Sy: Father Of Philippine Retail

“Success is not just good luck. It is a combination of hard work, good credit standing, opportunity, readiness, and timing.” – Henry Sy Sr.

Henry Sy, known as the “Father of Philippine Retail” and the #1 Philippines’ richest man, was born October 25, 1924 in the village of Ankhue, in the Jinjiang county (now city) of Fujian province, south China.

We will look into the business success story of a Filipino entrepreneur, Henry Sy, in this article by Wilson Lee Flores, entrepreneur magazine.

Chinese immigrant Henry Sy survived the loss of his father’s two sari- sari stores at the close of World War II eventually install to himself as Asia’s shopping mall king. He survived other crises as well: the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ declaration of martial law (1972), the chaos following opposition leader Benigno Aquino Jr’s assassination (1983), the military coups against the Aquino administration (1987- 89), and the Asian financial crisis (starting 1997). “I don’t give up easily,” Sy, 85, says, “I look for solutions to problems. I want to make things happen.”

And happen they did. In its March 17, 2003 issue, the US business magazine Forbes listed Henry Sy among the world’s billionaires, with an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion and exceeding the fortunes of France’s Michellin, clan of tire makers; Citigroup boss Sanford Weill; publishing tycoon William Hearst III; Richard Marriott of the world- famous hotel chain; and television host Oprah Winfrey. In 1999, the Management Association of the Philippines named Henry Sy as “Management Man of the Year.” In 2005, the Philippine Retail Association conferred him the title, “Father of Philippine Retail,” and the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation honored him as one of four Business Greats.

Sy’s success has only increase his fame and clout. In 2002 he astounded most analysts when he tapped Asia’s wealthiest billionaire, Hong Kong’s Li Ka-Shing, to invest in the Philippines through a joint venture between the SM group and Li’s Watson retail chain.

Mall of Asia

His retail and other businesses aside, Sy is the power behind Banco de Oro Universal Bank and the 85-year old China Banking Corp., which his group took over in early 2005. He became a major force in promoting Philippine tourism after taking control of Tagaytay Highlands, a prime property and one of the projects Highlands prime Inc. (the real estate arm of publicly- listed Belle Resources), where Sy and sons Henry Jr. and Hans sit as board members. Tagaytay Highlands is a strategic complement to similar projects in Baguio and Cebu, and that gave the Philippines “a world- class resort community.” When “Mall of Asia,” his dream project, is completed in the Manila Bay reclamation area, it will sit on 90 hectares and is envisioned to be the premiere destination mall in the Asia Pacific region.

Indeed it is in the mall business that Sy has eminently distinguished himself. Sy’s SM Group of Companies, one of the Philippines’ biggest conglomerates, started as a shoe-retailing store on Carriedo Street in Quiapo, Manila. (The holding firm for the group, SM Investments Corp., was incorporated in 1960. SMIC became public in early 2005, raising nearly P25 billion in new money that many believed the Sy family will use to expand its portfolio investments and acquisitions). In 2001, the London- based Euromoney magazine named Sy’s retail chain as Best Retailer in Asia. Shoemart Inc., the Philippines’ largest chain of department stores, is an anchor tenant in all SM malls. Supervalue Inc handles the group’s supermarket businesses, including the Warehouse Clubs. The group’s retail chain include Star Appliance Center as well as stores dealing in hardware products, appliances, toys, home and lifestyle products, health and beauty products, export- overrun clothes and fashion accessories. SM also operates the Philippine’s largest chain of cinemas. Its Makro retail chain is a partnership with the Ayala Group of companies, another Philippine giant.

Group Leader

Henry Sy was born in the village of Ankhue, in the Jinjiang county (now city), of Fujian province, south of China. In 1936, when he was 12, he and his father migrated to Manila and here learned the basics of retailing and good customer service in his father’s sari-sari store. (One of his fondest memories of the pre- war era was joining a crowd of onlookers at the inauguration of Quezon Bridge in Quiapo, Manila, with the guest of honor, the flamboyant President Manuel L. Quezon, wearing his famous safari hat. The boy never imagined that he would get to meet and know all Philippine Presidents in the course of his business career). Desperate to study and learn English, Sy asked permission from his father to go back to school. He was already 12, but he had to start from grade one when he enrolled at the Quiapo Anglo- Chinese High School, where his classmates were younger and smaller. On reaching grade 4, Sy asked his teacher if he could be accelerated, and his teacher agreed provided he attained a minimum grade average of 90 percent. He eventually completed grad school in five years. “I used second- hand books and bought only a few pieces of pad paper at a time,” Sy says. “I did not want to ask more money from my father, who was working so hard. I was happy enough to be studying. I was not first in academics, but I was the group leader.”

Near the end of the war, one of elders Sy’s stores was burned down and the other looted in the chaos. “We lost everything,” Sy says. “My father decided to go back to China and asked me to join him, but it was my opportunity to start a business; I decided to stay behind. My father was pained by the hardships, but I never lost hope.”

After the war, goods were in desperate supply, so the young Henry joined the booming buy-and-sell business and saved enough money for future ventures. He returned to school in the early 1950s, enrolling at the Far Eastern University in Manila, in hopes of securing a degree in commerce. He lasted only two years as a result of pressure from his growing business. More than 40 years later, on January 30, 1999, De La Salle University conferred on him an honorary doctorate in business management. It was a toast to half a century of brilliant entrepreneurship. It has become a cliche, but
success came to Sy only as a result of hard work, tenacity, frugality, self- discipline, Confucian values, and an undying thirst of learning.

Budget Carriers AirAsia, Jetstar Top Region’s Rivals In Brand Survey

Asia-Pacific budget airlines Air-Asia Bhd. and Qantas Airways Ltd.’s Jetstar overtook full-service carriers in a brand-reputation survey as more passengers in the region turned to cheaper options amid a global economic slowdown.

Singapore Airlines Ltd. and Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., among the world’s 10 biggest carriers by market value, were ranked below the two low-cost air-travel operators, according to the report compiled by Nielsen Holdings NV and research firm Campaign Asia released today.

Global airline profits are set to fall in 2012 by more than half to $3 billion from $7.9 billion last year, according to the International Air Transport Association, as recessions in the U.K., Spain and other European countries damp demand and erode gains from lower fuel prices.

“It’s an economic reality,” Therese Glennon, managing director of consumer insights for Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa at Nielsen, said in an interview. “As the demand for budget travel increases, as the economic situation deteriorates, you see a lot of these bigger airlines adjusting their business models.”

Nielsen asked 400 respondents in each of 12 Asia-Pacific countries where it conducted the survey to name the top two brands they thought were most trusted or had the best reputation in 14 categories, including travel and leisure, it said.

Cathay in May predicted “disappointing” first-half earnings. The company has pared passenger-capacity growth, cut flights to North America and Europe this year, imposed a hiring freeze on ground staff and offered cabin crew unpaid leave.

“While we cannot comment on the validity of this specific survey, being unaware of its exact methodology, we can share that for more than 65 years, Cathay Pacific has been serving travelers from around the world,” the airline said in an e- mailed response to questions.

Singapore Air, which posted an unexpected fourth-quarter loss of S$38.2 million ($30 million), started a low-cost carrier that completed its first flight last month. Nicholas Ionides, a spokesman for Singapore Air, declined to comment because he hasn’t seen the report.

Other full-service airlines that were ranked lower include Qantas, Australia’s largest carrier that forecast last month annual profit may fall as much as 91 percent, and Korean Air Lines Co., South Korea’s biggest flier that slumped to a surprise first-quarter loss.

SEC Seeks Comments On Proposed Rules For Exchange Traded Fund

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is inviting market participants to submit comments on its proposed rules and regulations on Exchange Traded Fund (ETF), a new investment product similar to mutual fund.

The SEC en banc received the proposed rules from the SEC technical working committee recently.

The SEC defines an ETF as “an open-end investment company that continuously issues and redeems its shares of stocks in creation unit in exchange for the basket of securities listed in a registered securities exchange and representing an index whose performance the ETF endeavors to track.”

ETFs issue redeemable shares at net asset value or NAV. However, those shares can only be issued or redeemed by or through Authorized Participants in creation units representing large number of ETF shares as disclosed in its registration statement.

Once issued, ETF shares are traded in an exchange at market determined prices thus they can be bought and sold in an exchange anytime during the trading period.

The proposed rules and regulations on ETF classify ETF as a new investment product which is similar to mutual funds but has distinct characteristics.

It allows investors to diversify their portfolio by buying a single product that represents a wide range of securities underlying an index.

The proposed rules are issued pursuant to the Investment Company Act (ICA) which prescribes the regulation of investment companies such as the requirements to register with the SEC and comply with certain standards.

These standards include regular public disclosure of financial situation, investment policies and objectives and fund portfolios as well as the companies’ pricing and fees.

The proposed rules mandate the incorporation of ETF corporations in accordance with ICA, and, the registration of ETF shares under the Securities and Regulation Code (SRC).

The proposed rules also provide for pertinent requirements on the different aspects of operation of ETF such as ensuring liquidity of ETF shares by requiring the appointment of a market maker and listing of ETF shares in an Exchange.

The rules allow in-kind issuance and redemption of ETF shares as well as issuance of ETF shares in exchange for cash in exceptional cases.

There shall be transparency in the identities and weighting of the securities comprising the index, ETF’s portfolio holdings as well as its net asset value (NAV) by posting these information daily on ETF’s website.

An ETF shall operate with an arbitrage mechanism designed to minimize the potential deviation between the market price and NAV of ETF shares.

Akapulko and Guava Herbal Soap

How to Prepare a Decoction:

1. Wash the leaves thoroughly and chop or cut in small pieces.
2. Measure 1 glass of chopped fresh leaves and 2 glasses of water.
3. Let it boil for 15 minutes (start timing when the water starts to boil).
4. After 15 minutes, remove from fire and strain in a cheesecloth. Set aside and let it cool.

Materials:

* 1 glass Caustic Soda (NaOH)
* 3 glasses Akapulko or Guava decoction, cooled
* 5 glasses cooking oil
* coloring powder (optional)

Procedure:

1. Prepare the materials and the utensils needed.
2. Measure 1 glass of caustic soda and 3 glasses of Akapulko or Guava decoction and pour into a plastic pail.
3. Mix well by stirring continuously using a wooden ladle or bamboo stick. Use only one direction in mixing the mixture. Stir until the caustic soda is dissolved.
4. Pour 5 glasses cooking oil into the mixture.
5. Continue stirring until a consistency of a condensed milk is achieved.
6. Pour the soap mixture into desired plastic molders. Set aside and let it cool to harden.
7. After 4-5 hours, remove the soap from the molder.
8. Allow 30 days of ageing before packing. Label the soaps.

Indications:

* Akapulko leaves – anti-fungal
* Guava leaves – antiseptic for wounds

Kamias, Calamansi, Papaya, Cucumber and Radish Herbal Soaps

Reminder:

* Caustic Soda can harm the skin upon contact. Wash immediately with vinegar or anything sour and then wash it with soap and water.
* Caustic Soda is harmful to health and so, make the necessary precaution. Use mask and gloves to protect your body.

Carrot Castile Herbal Soap
The Beta Carotene in carrots makes it very good for your skin, the lather is lovely and creamy, and the orange colour of the soap itself is beautiful.

Ingredients:

1 cup carrot juice;
5 tablespoons lye;
2 cups olive oil 1/2 cup canola oil;
(optional) tiny dried dice of carrot. Cut it as small as possible. When dry it should be like sand grains. Ann Beck’s Castile Carrot Soap

NOTES:

It’s very important to use rubber gloves and eye protection when using lye. One can hand mix the soap, but it’s far simpler to use a food processor. The word “trace” means if you drip some soap from a spoon onto the surface of the batch, it leaves a faint mark. Tracing is less critical if the soap is made in the processor. With processor soap, the batch should be the consistency of whipping cream.

Hand mixed soap can separate and take up to two hours or even more of stirring to achieve trace. Soap must be poured as soon as it has traced. it sets up very quickly.

Never use aluminum utensils or molds. Lye reacts badly with it. stainless steel is fine, as is plastic. Take care not to allow lye grains to touch Formica countertops (worktops). It will discolor it. It’s best to measure the lye with the container in the sink.
Method:
1.) measure the carrot juice and place it into a Pyrex cup, of at least two cups capacity. Place the cup into a sink.
2.) mix the two oils together and barely heat them to 110 degrees F.
3.) Carefully measure the lye and set aside in a glass.
4.) Pour the lye into the carrot juice and stir with a wooden utensil, like a chopstick or a bamboo skewer, until the lye dissolves. THE liquid/lye combination will have a chemical reaction and will heat up to about 180 degrees F. EVENTUALLY the juice/lye combination needs to cool to 110 degrees F, which is just barely discernible to your wrist. YOU can use a thermometer, of course.
5.) when the oil and the lye mixture are both at about 110, pour the oils into the food processor and add the lye mixture. Process until trace has occurred.
6.) have your molds arranged on a newspaper covered cookie sheet. Pour the soap into the molds. Cover the molds with lids or with plastic wrap, taking care not to have the lids or wrap touch the soap.
7.) Put the soap batch in a draftless spot and cover it with a towel to protect the heat that will occur as the saponification process (the chemical change that creates soap) proceeds. Allow the batch to remain covered until it has cooled, usually overnight.

At this point, you’ll do your clean up. always protect your eyes and hands during this phase. it’s best to wash everything in the sink and again in the dishwasher. raw soap would take the hide off of a rhinoceros.

8.) Uncover the soap, remove the plastic or the lids, and allow the soap to remain in the molds for (about) 2 days, or until it looks like it is pulling away from the sides of the molds.
9.) unmold the soap, lay it on pencils or chopsticks so that the air can circulate around it. It must cure for a month before use.

Twenty-Two Carrot Soap

Ingredients:

4 cups carrot juice distilled water;
5 tablespoons lye;
1 1 /4 pounds lard (or 2 cups olive oil, plus 1 /2. cup canola oil)

1.) Place the carrot juice into a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Using a coffee filter, strain the liquid away from the bright orange “foam”. Reserve the foam and add it to distilled water to make one cup of liquid.
2.) Follow the rest of the instructions in the above Castile recipe.

Cementless Soil Blocks

In view of the rising cost of cement, the Forest Products Research and Development Institute made an attempt to form building blocks out of soil and water alone or in combination with one or two other agri-forestry waste materials, such as rice hull, coconut coir dust and wood ash. Lime is used as a binder. Lime is found in large quantities in Rizal, Negros Occidental and Davao Oriental. Coconut coir and other materials are available almost nationwide

Materials:

Lime
Coconut coir
Rice hull
Soil
Sand
Wood ash
Rice hull ash

Equipment:

1/4 inch mesh screen
mold
shovel

Procedure:

1. Pulverize the soil and remove larger pieces with the use of a 1/4 inch wire mesh screen
2. Mix together soil and any one or two of the agri-forestry wastes. Suggested combinations (in parts by volume) are:

a. 3 soil + 1 coconut coir
b. 3 soil + 1 rice hull
c. 5 soil + 1 lime
d. 5 soil + 1/2 lime + 1/2 rice hull ash
e. 5 soil + 1/2 lime + 1/2 wood ash
f. 4 soil + 1 rice hull + 1 lime
g. 21/2 soil + 21/2 sand + 1/2 lime + 1/2 wood ash

3. Form a hill out of the dry mixture (or of soil alone if a pure soil block is to be made) with a crater on top and add water.
4. Pour water slowly and with a shovel, mix the materials until a paste is formed. The paste should neither be too dry nor too wet so that during the molding process. The ingredients are wet enough to stay packed but not too wet. to produce slump when the product is removed from the mold. The right mixture can be learned easily by experience.
5. Fill the mold with the mixture. Tamp very well and level off. Apply pressure using a manually-operated molding machine or a similar device.
6. Dry the block in the shade for a few days and then sun dry for another few days.

6. SCHEDULE TIME WISELY. A schedule is the roadmap by which salespeople travel. It takes the frustration out of the day. It assures that the necessary things get done and get done on time. Plan your work then work your plan.

7. BE POSITIVE IN YOUR ATTITUDE. Success in sales, as in all areas of life is 90 percent attitude and 10 percent aptitude. All of us must work at developing habits of constructive thinking. I am proud to be a salesperson. Sales make the wheels of our economy turn. Bernard Baruch, advisor to several presidents, is quoted as saying, “If every salesperson sat down and took no orders for twenty-four hours, it would bankrupt our country!” Every company that manufactures any kind of product depends upon salespeople to move that product. Without salespeople business would be paralyzed. Remember, sales is one of the highest paid of all professions. Statistics show that good salespeople enjoy incomes far above the average.

8. HAVE AN OFFICE AREA. Most direct salespeople work from their own homes, but it is essential to have a place where you can work in a organized and efficient manner. An office plus a strict working schedule gives you dignity. Both are absolutely essential for efficient operation and accurate record keeping, so important to the success of any business.

9. BE INVOLVED. Most sales organization offer contests to stimulate production. Include winning contests as part of your business goals. Contests make your business fun as well as adding considerable dollar value to your income.

10. LEARN TO HANDLE MONEY INTELLIGENTLY. A regular nine-to-five job usually means a paycheck at the end of the second week. Direct sales “reps” handle money constantly. There’s probably a thousand of non government organizations (NGO) and people’s organizations (PO) already in the Philippines which provide the less fortunate with livelihood programs to not only sustain, but to enhance their way of living. But according to the survey conducted by Sandy Romualdez and Marge Barro, founders of Gifts and Graces, NGOs and POs need help in product development and access to markets for the products that they are able to produce through these livelihood programs. Gifts and Graces Fair Trade Foundation, Inc. was founded last January 2006 as the answer to this need. “Gifts and Graces is a social enterprise which helps provide more income to the disadvantaged groups that are part of the livelihood programs of NGOs and POs,” explained Gregorie ‘Greg’ Perez, Executive Director of Gifts and Graces.

More NGOs and POs, More Blessings

Gifts and Graces have established partnerships with 20 groups as of the moment, including groups of street children, urban poor families, people who just got out of prison, etc. A group should have production or they should have products already so that we would be able to assist them with. Examples of products that we support now are bags made of newspaper and tarpaulin, key chains made of beautiful stones, etc.

Product Development

Gifts and Graces would like to share that community producers “should not depend on charity because they have their capacity to create a prosperous life from their own efforts and by creating beautiful products with quality,” says Greg.

“Consumers would surely patronize us if we continue to make beautiful designs for products, but with quality,” says Greg. They would like the consumers to remember that “Gifts and Graces products are quality products, have beautiful overall design, created under Fair Trade principles and environment-friendly,” Greg added.

Market Access

Gifts and Graces help market products of NGOs and POs to big retailers like SM, Kultura, Rustan’s, etc. Disadvantaged groups do not usually reach these stores because, first and foremost, they could not deliver the number of orders required. The secret that G&G does: proper delegation. For example, 4000 bags are needed to be delivered; G&G properly distributes this number of order to 4 groups. Second, the groups could not attend to all the legal requirements needed by the bigger markets, and that’s what Gifts and Graces is here for.

The most important thing here is, they don’t need to wait for all the products to be sold before they would actually be paid for. Because of G&G, community producers would be paid right away for the products that they create. They are provided with down payment before they actually create the products so they would have budget to buy the raw materials needed. The rest of the payment is given during the delivery of the finished products.

Disadvantaged groups benefit a lot because of the partnership built between G&G and NGOs and POs – they are given a chance to market their products to high-end retailers, thus giving them more income. They earn not because they depend on other people or organizations, but because they work hard and incorporate beauty and quality of products.

The Business Side of CARMINA VILLAROEL

“I ventured into this kind of business because I really love shoes, more than clothes and bags – shoes all the way!” This was Carmina Villaroel’s opening statement to us during the interview. As you may well know, Carmina is a popular celebrity and TV host. She was telling us how her business, Muñiz shoes, started out. “As an artist, I need a lot of shoes – shoes of different colors is always better. I like loud and unusual colors. That’s when I realized that it’s not easy to find these colors. It’s also hard to find comfy, stylish, yet affordable shoes. It was Zoren (legaspi, Carmina’s parnter) who pushed me to start this business, since it is my hobby (to collect shoes) and many are saying that in starting a business, it must be about what you really want to do. The first thing I did for the business was to think of a good and catchy business name. It was also Zoren who suggested for me to use my middle name, Muñiz.”

KN: How did you start with Muñiz Shoes and what are your goals for the business?

Carmina: I am really hands on (with Muñiz). I researched, asked a lot of people and called up suppliers. I don’t have a secretary at that time; it’s really me doing all the work. I just introduced myself to them, I interview them and they were willing enough to meet with me so I could see their products. I also looked for people who have the same goals as mine (or me), and are not focused on just the money. My goal is to re-introduce Filipinos to the global market as experts in shoe making. We were once known to be such, but for some reason, we are now left behind. If China can do it, so can we! I believe that we are really good. My business is still small now, but I will strive hard to make it grow to help and give livelihood to more people. This business is not just for me, but also for all of us. I find it sad that people need to go abroad to find better jobs.

KN: When it comes to designing the shoes, how do you do it? What are they made of?

Carmina: They’re all locally made; all the materials used are local as well. I have a supplier from Marikina and Montalban for the shoes. As for the boxes, I have them made in C5 and Manila. I planned in a manner that I could help more people.

I design the shoes and my kids draw them because I don’t know how. But I color them. I want the designs to be unique because I’m very adventurous. Even if it’s just black leather, I still decide on the material and color. I still have the last say. I believe that even though the clothes are not that elegant, but the shoes look great, you will look fabulous already!

I want Muñiz Shoes to be known as comfortable, unique and stylish Filipino-made shoes. My goal is for this business to be known more to other countries so that many would admire the quality of a work of a Filipino.

KN: What characteristics should one possess to make his/her business successful?

Carmina: One should give value to continuous education for the business and product. Listen! Listen! Listen! Meaning, even if you’re the boss, you should listen to your co-workers, employees and consumers. Remember, if they are not here to support you, you won’t be here as well. I did not graduate from a business school or course, but I’m reading a lot of business books and they are very helpful to me. I ask a lot of questions, I’m not ashamed to ask. I don’t care what others would think because asking questions, for me, is a part of educating myself. I just want to be honest; if I really don’t know/understand something, then there’s nothing wrong with asking. Also, one should be hard working dedicated to the business.

Biz Tips from Carmina:

1. Work hand-in-hand with your supplier, because if their works are good and the consumers like their works, then your relationship would last longer. But when it comes to quality of work, don’t settle for “That should be fine/okay”. It’s either a yes or a no.

2. For those who have employees, give them designated assignments for a smoother workflow.

3. Advertising is also important. How would your market know that your product exist if you won’t let them know? Word-of-mouth advertising and Twitter helped my business a lot when it comes to advertising.

4. Love your job and everything that you’re doing. If you don’t want what you’re doing, you would make a lot of excuses; but if you like it, you would do everything to get the job done!

The Classic Roast: From Bazaars to Malls!

Lack of capital is not a hindrance in business. Polly Quizon and Denise Owyong proved this statement to be true when they put up The Classic Roast, a business that offers fresh roast ducks.

Starting Small

Polly and Denise started the business with only P 10, 000 capital. They sold roast ducks and duck by products in bazaars. “We’ve been joining weekend gourmet bazaars since March 2010 to test the market. It’s a good strategy to introduce a new product. It’s really affordable. We just pay about P 7, 500 for booth rental, and about P 3, 000 for the flyers and all the other expenses,” shared Polly. But they did not just join any bazaar; they identified their target market along with the participants of bazaars. “Not everybody appreciates roast ducks. The more sophisticated and those who travel are the ones who know about the product. We targeted the bazaars that have this clientele,” says Denise.

They were happy to sell around 2-3 whole ducks at first. Due to their perseverance and hard work, a lot of opportunities opened up to them. In one of the bazaars, they met people who changed the way they do business. “Who would’ve thought that we would meet the president of Rustan’s through a bazaar? We met her at a time na akala namin, hanggang bazaars na lang kami,” Polly happily narrates. From this meeting, The Classic Roast was able to set up a kiosk in the Rustan’s grocery – Rockwell last April 2011.

From 3 whole ducks, they now able sell 15-20 pieces per week. Through innovation and research, they also introduced duck siopao. They sell 980 pieces of duck siopao a week, at a very cheap price of P 45.

Thirsty for More Knowledge

It was also in a bazaar where they learned about 10, 000 Women Business Training Program when a co-participant urged them to enroll. The 10, 000 Women Business Training Program conducts customized business education for women all over the country.

Polly used her learnings from the training in making their business grow. “Basic business principles ang itinuturo sa training. These principles take a different meaning when you have an existing business. You know when to apply the lessons, what you’re doing wrong and what you have to correct,” shares Polly.

Love for Employees

One of the things Polly learned from the training is taking good care of employees. “Part of our business’ growth is attributed to our employees. I learned the right way on how to compensate and motivate our employees, and to be able to share with them our plans and accomplishments,” she adds.

Denise and Polly learned not only to take care of their staff, but to love them as well. In return, their employees put in so much dedication and motivation into the business. “We see everybody as partners – employees, suppliers, customers, landlords. We build personal relationships with them because we are co-owners of this business,” says Polly. That’s why they are also expecting their employees to build personal relationships with their customers. “We always tell our people to know the names of our clients. When they pass by, they greet the clients by their names. It’s hard to remember names, but it’s a personal business. We are having so much fun,” shares Denise.

The combination of their bazaar experiences and additional knowledge from the training brought about growth for the business. The Classic Roast already has two kiosks – one in Rustan’s Rockwell and another in Rustan’s Katipunan. They are about to open a third kiosk in Rustan’s Makati sometime this year.

“We have learned the importance of customer service. We already know that we have a good product. What makes us different is the service that we give to our customers.”

The Classic Roast uses environment-friendly packaging like echo bag, paper bag and starch ware, instead of using plastic and Styrofoam. In this manner, they are helping our mother nature. “It also looks nicer and different. This is a long-term decision.”

Quenching the Thirst for a Successful Business

Calamansi is a fruit that all Filipinos are accustomed to – as a cooking ingredient, for whitening, or to heal simple cough. This is also the reason why, 13 years ago, Stella Cepeda and husband Randy, owners of Pick and Squeeze, used this as the main ingredient for their product – calamansi natural fruit concentrate.

A Family Recipe

The recipe for making calamansi concentrate has been passed on from one generation of Stella’s family to another. They decided to utilize it, modified it and packaged them as give-away to friends, relatives and officemates for Christmas. “People cannot believe it when we said we just made them from our kitchen. They told us, ‘you should sell this! It could be a lucrative business!’” shared Stella.

Considering their friends’ opinion, they started selling to officemates in a per-order basis. They worked after office hours until 2 in the morning. “We produced 50-60 bottles a night, only because iyon lang ang kaya naming lutuin. The orders were greater than what we can produce. After a few months of that lifestyle, we decided to go full-time with the business,” narrates Randy. “Mas malaki pa ang kinikita namin sa side-line negosyo kaysa sa full-time job! We wanted to sustain the growth of the business that’s why we got into it more seriously. Believe me, when people knew we were full-time with the business na, the orders just kept coming!” exclaimed Stella.

From Home and Beyond

They coordinated with the barangay captain and hired additional unemployed people from their area in San Juan, when the volume of orders became too much to handle. Right now, they employ 15 regular workers.

They started exporting their product in 2000. That’s when their perception for growth also changed. “Before, we would count our sales per bottle (750 ml). At some point, well-meaning resource persons advised us to start thinking of growth. My father said, ‘Stop counting per bottles. Negotiate, transact, and deal – with both your supplying and buying end – in terms of cases (12 bottles per case),” shared Randy. “Kasama sa paglaki, tinanggal namin ‘yung tingi or retail mentality,” he added. They now supply 400-500 cases per month to different grocery chains, Duty Free, UCC Coffee, Max’s, Sugi Restaurant, and soon in Robinsons malls.

Finding Opportunity Amidst Challenges

Calamansi, despite being common, is seasonal. This is one of Stella and Randy’s challenges as entrepreneurs. They went to different markets until they met calamansi suppliers from Mindoro. “Apparently, calamansi also have peak and lean seasons! The prices are really unstable. This is all because of the backward farming practices,” Stella sadly relates. “This is also the reason why we could not equally compete with the global market. International market requires farmers to comply with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) – a practice that our farmers are not aware of,” she added. “These experiences taught us to be flexible, and to plan and plot ahead of time. That particular challenge forced us to look for sources from Zamboanga, Iloilo, Aklan, Davao and Leyte,” says Randy.

Thirsty for More Knowledge

After about 12 years in the business, Stella and Randy are still open for more knowledge to grow the business. When they saw the newspaper ad about the 10, 000 Women Business Training Program, Stella immediately enrolled. University of Asia and the Pacific, through the help of IESE Business School and Goldman Sachs, conducts this business training program. “The training was a wealth of information! The professors were motivating. During our class, I realized na madami pa pala kaming hindi nagagawa sa negosyo. It took another person to look at this business professionally, especially since we consider this as a backyard business,” narrates Stella.

The business training program opened their eyes to future goals. They are planning to have more equipment to make more calamansi juice concentrate. They also want to expand their product line by introducing new flavor of concentrate in the market. Both of them believe they can survive more years in the business, utilizing their learnings from experiences and the business training.

“At the Age of 23, I’m Already a Businessman!”

Story of Jon Bantigue

Jon Bantigue, owner of Azta Urban Salon, grew up in an entrepreneurial family. His dad, Willie, spent the last 17 years in the distributorship business. “My dad came from a poor family. He experienced driving a tricycle to earn his daily allowance,” says Jon. His father’s entrepreneurial experiences shaped him up.

Young Entrepreneur

Jon was taught different entrepreneurial techniques while growing up. “I remember my dad gave me P20 when I was a kid. He said, ‘We will build a small stall in our house and sell whatever you buy using that money.’ So I went with my mom to the grocery and bought chips and nuts. My first customers were our house helpers,” recalls Jon. “I earned from it, but I lost them. I had this jar where I place my earnings. As a child, I also love to eat hunk food, that’s why I bought from my own merchandise. My only mistake was I used my earnings from the jar to buy my merchandise. My first business failed when I was 5 years old.”

Jon’s next business encounter was when he was in Grade 2. “I love drawing. I drew cartoon characters on bookmarks. My Math teacher saw me and confiscated my bookmarks. It was timely because we were talking about problem solving in class. She used my bookmarks as example and said, ‘Jon has 20 bookmarks. If Jon is selling each for P 5, how much money would he have if he sells all 20?’ She gave my bookmarks back, but then all of my classmates wanted to buy them. That’s when I first experienced free advertising,” Jon happily recalls.

Jon’s entrepreneurial mindset continued until high school. Before going to college, he still wanted to pursue his dream of becoming an architect; but his father’s influence won over. He graduated as a Business Administration degree-holder in UP Diliman.

First Business Venture

Jon did not build his own business at once. He tried his luck in the corporate world as a Marketing Trainee instead to gain enough work experience. “After a year or so, I decided to quit corporate world and put up my own business. I wanted to be my own boss; I want to be in control of my time,” he said. While having his hair done in a barbershop, he started a small talk with the barber and asked him about the business. That’s where he got the idea of putting up his own salon business. “I learned that for every P50 worth of haircut, 50% goes to the barber while the other 50% goes to the shop owner. If the barber makes 20 haircuts a day, he would earn P500, and the barbershop would also earn P500. Not bad, right? Build 10 barbershops earning P500, then you will have P5, 000 a day,” Jon explains.

Using his learnings from school, he conducted a feasibility study and market research about the salon business, together with his partner, Jop. At the age of 23, Jon and Jop put up a salon in 2004. “We learned that first, there was a fad for Korean hairstyle. Second, girls are willing to pay more when it comes to grooming their hair. Third, customers don’t really mind if there are girls or guys in a salon. So we became a salon for both men and women. We used these learnings to create our edge. We give very good service for a reasonable price; very hip, innovative and we offer personalized styles for people between the 16-30 age bracket.”

In 8 years of doing business, Jon and partner now own 7 branches of Azta Urban Salon; 4 are franchised while 3 are company-owned. “Based on the feedback of customers, we realized that the reasons for their loyalty are first, they have tried the service of high-end salons, and we give the same good quality at almost half the price; second, we offer the total experience like serving drinks and free massage, and third, we also offer personalized hairstyle.”

Importance of Education

Now that he has his own business, Jon appreciates the value of the things he learned in college. “I apply everything I have learned in my business. There are times when I review my books and notes in college and assess how I use these concepts in my business,” says Jon. Aside from school, his dad’s training is also a big factor for his Jon’s success. “I am very blessed to have a dad who is a business consultant. People pay for what he has to say, and I get it all for free. It’s a big factor that during my formative years, he groomed me to become the entrepreneur that I am now.”

Start small – Start a business with just a small kiosk. It’s easier to start a business using just a small capital instead of wasting years of saving for capital; when you could already be earning from your business during those years.
Think big – Don’t settle with just one kiosk. You need to have a visionyou’re your business. Ask yourself, “How much do I want to earn 5 years from now?” It’s important to have a vision because it gives you just the right amount of motivation. Knowing that you have a business goal, the more you will work hard and achieve this goal.

As we age, we start feeling pain and stiffness on some, if not most, of our joints, especially if we have not been quite active like athletes are. Our hands, knees or shoulders might feel sore and hard to move. We shouldn’t wait for joints to become swollen before we act on pain brought about byarthritis joint pain.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis may be caused by inflammation of the tissue lining the joints, the signs of which could be redness, some hot feeling on the joints, pain, and swelling. These are definitely telling you something is wrong, because where there is pain, there is something which is not good, right? To review, joints are places where two bones meet, such as your elbow or knee, and often times, people complain of pain on their knee joints, hip joints or the ankle joints.

How to keep pain away:

When you are just starting to feel those joint pains, it would help if you will take note of the following to prevent arthritisfrom getting the best of you:

Try to decrease your weight. Experience tell us that being overweight also causes these joint pains. You will notice that attacks of pain and soreness may disappear with the loss of some kilos. When your knees and hips hurt, they’re telling you they cannot carry your weight!
Have an exercise regime on a regular basis, daily if possible. Joints are like metals that can get rusty when they don’t get some action. Dance, do someaerobics, workout; any form of sweating activities will keep you like oiled machinery. Even going for a walk every day is good for you, too. (Come wintertime or cold seasons, exercise more and sweat more, even if it’s only inside your home.)
Take warm showers in the morning. Cold showers, if you will pay attention to how you feel afterwards, seem to make the pain worse. Grandma used to tell us that we are allowing cold to set in our bones, causing it to hurt more.
Try the avocado leaves (alligator pear) as cure for aching joints. It’s a very simple cure that only requires passing the leaves swiftly over a flame and dabbing it lightly with coconut or baby oil before it is patched on your joints, hips, lower back, knee or wherever there is joint pain.
For pain reliever, a lot of people use herbs or medicines can be bought without a prescription. But grandma taught us not to depend on medicines for every little pain, right? If your pain is frequent and you experience swelling, you should see your doctor. Only a doctor can tell if you really have arthritisor a related condition and what to do about it.

Soap Making by Cold Process

Making soap at your own home is fun and a good business idea too. Making soap of your own is limitless. You can create your own specialty soaps with great scents in different shapes and colors. Example below is a soap recipe for white creamy laundry bar soap with the essence of citronella or other suitable essential oils.

Materials:

Coconut oil (primary)
Caustic soda (35 Be) as saponifying agent
Sodium silicate as soap builder
Essential oils as perfume

Equipment:

Cylindrical soap mixer, pedal type (16 liters)
Moulder with cutter (71 5 cm. x 38 cm. x 3 cm )
Oil storage container, 20 kg capacity
Percolator, 1 gallon capacity

Procedure:

1. Five liters coconut oil is measured and transferred to a steel cylindrical soap mixer.

2. A volume of 2.3 liters of caustic soda is slowly added to the oil while stirring for 20 minutes.

3. 0.25 liters of sodium silicate and 0.02 liter essential oil are added and continuously mixed and stirred for 10 minutes.

4. The homogenous viscous soap mixture is poured into the moulder and is made to stand for seventy-two (72) hours at room temperature to complete saponification.

5. The soap is extruded from the mould and is divided into bars by passing through a wire cutter.

6. Soap bars are packed in polyethylene bags then into boxes for storage.
