How To Hurdle Temptation
by Dr. Napoleon Hill

Here's a sure-fire method to help you live
the life you want to live.

To develop a positive mental attitude, you must make a habit of transmuting every experience into definite action, promptly and decisively.

That means you must have a definite philosophy, a clear-cut general standard of behavior, to guide your thoughts and actions under various circumstances.

The most important rule you can make for yourself is this: never, under any condition, engage in any transaction which does not bring equal benefits to all persons it affects.

Remember that for one person to gain, it is not necessary for someone else to lose. The only true measure of success is whether everyone concerned is benefited by it.

The late Cyrus H. K. Curtis, founder of the Saturday Evening Post, defined success as "the ability to get everything one desires or needs without violating the rights of others."

Through such standards of positive thinking and performance, you can achieve material success honestly, forthrightly and proudly. Let me give an example of how Curtis himself put this philosophy into action.

In the early days of the Post, the business frequently was short of operating capital. But Curtis had decreed that he would not accept certain types of advertising.

One Saturday, he and his son-in-law, Edward Bok, were opening mail with the hope enough money would come in to take care of the payroll later in the day. Suddenly Bok whooped: "Here it is! Enough for twice what we need!"

Curtis looked at the check in the envelope and said, "Sorry, we can't accept it." It was from an advertising agency which, learning the Post was pinched, seized the opportunity to try to induce Curtis to run copy he had often rejected as objectionable.

"We will operate the Post without this sort of advertising," he said, "and the time will come when this policy will pay off."

And another time, when heavy debts threatened to crush the Post out of existence, Curtis' biggest creditor - a paper company - not only extended his credit but loaned him enough money to satisfy the other creditors. Thus Curtis was given a free hand to get his publication on a going basis.

Many years later, another firm solicited Curtis' business by offering a lower price. Curtis rejected the offer. The company that stood by him in his day of need, he said, would count on his business in his day of prosperity - regardless of price!

You will find your own decision easier to make if you have established certain standards of moral performance to which you adhere rigidly under all conditions.

In a sense, you are making decisions in advance - before you actually need to make them. For you are rejecting certain courses of action as repugnant or unworthy.

Thus you will find frequently, when a decision must be made, that it is one you made years ago when you resolved to live up to certain standards of behavior.

Remember, that you can compromise with others - but not with yourself.

So many of us think it is ok to walk around telling ourselves we we are stupid/fat/hopeless/pathetic etc.
~ but we would NEVER take that trash talk from someone else.
We need to be as affirming and positive to ourselves as we would want others to be." ~Sadie Nardini (with a special thanks to Insa for sharing)
They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually.

They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.

What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you never knew. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.

Believe it, it is real. The message he shared in the 1920s is still relevant today. The following is from the Napoleon Hill Today and Yesterday website. I hope you enjoy it!

When asked about happiness, Abe Lincoln said, “It has been my observation that people are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” That’s both the good and the bad news.

When things in life take a turn for the worse, we may not be able to change the outcome of the event, however, we can change our way of thinking about what happened, our attitude. Victor Frankl teaches us in his classical book, Man’s Search for Meaning, that our attitude is ultimately the only thing we can control in life.

Living with physical ailments, poverty, war, hatred, and a thousand other negativities that may well be beyond our control can sometimes be an ugly fact of life. But, how we think about these “facts” determines our attitude toward them in our personal life. For example, if there is not enough food in the refrigerator to make a sizable meal for a family of four, do not complain but celebrate the fact that there is any food at all. Go a step further, and serve what is there on your best dishes as if it were a celebration meal. Finally, give thanks for the feast that is about to be eaten, and even serve it with candlelight. Changing the atmosphere, by changing your attitude can greatly change your perception.

Ever notice that when your perception changes, the very next outcome most often changes too? This is the magic of attitude! The magic of attitude is the very method by which we can always control our destiny. Change your attitude, change your life. If you think you can, or you think your can’t, you’re right!

Here are some excellent affirmations that W. Clement Stone used to keep his attitude on track. You might try incorporating them into your daily routine too and see what difference word power can make!

• To be happy . . . act happy!
• I feel healthy . . . I feel happy . . . I feel terrific!
• Success is achieved by those who try and maintained by those who keep trying.
• Be courageous!
• With every adversity there is a seed of equivalent or greater benefit.
• What the mind of man can conceive and believe, the mind of man can achieve.
• Direct your thoughts, control your emotions and ordain your destiny.
• Do it now!
Be Your Very Best Always,
But since this is the Optimist Island blog, let me share a positive spin.

Some of those people took action, changed jobs or ended relationships and suddenly realized how happy they were now. "I feel alive again" said one. "I wish I had done this sooner" said another. "I have a fresh new start and I'm so excited!" is exactly what Debbie told me the other day.

This blog is to give you hope. As painful as it may be to make changes, the end result is often like a glorious rebirth, fresh-start and as the title says, a "New Beginning" for you.
Encourage a friend to get out of the rut they are in because the future is brighter than the past. I'm not saying the change will be easy but it's most likely necessary to find happiness again.

This is a quote that another friend shared on Facebook ~ which really sums it all up.

"Life is short! Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love Truly, Laugh uncontrollably, and Never regret anything that made you smile."

Make a positive change in your current situation. You have probably thought about for a year or years - so why not just go for it? If this is something you have wanted to do for a long time, what do you have to lose? Believe in yourself and give it a shot.

Enjoy the New Beginning for the next exciting chapter in your life! Woohoo!!

Embrace Life's Changes

"If you don't like the way things are in your life, at work or in your relationships - then take action and change them. Okay, all the goals you wrote down in December need to be reviewed again. The start of a new month is an opportunity to do a gut check and look at what you "said" you were going to do and what you've actually "done" in the new year. Are you making the progress you expected to make so far?

I say this as a coach who is encouraging you to take action on those things you see as important. We all need a gentle push sometimes. Getting stuck in old habits isn't easy to move from, but you and I both know that it CAN be done. February is Fresh Start month!

IF you need a little encouragement, feel welcome to email me at neilwoody1@me.com

Think of how proud you will be when you follow through on the 3 most important goals you have. You Can Do It!

Remember, read or listen to something positive and encouraging every morning, then do the same at night. Share time with people with a great attitude, energy and passion. Follow your heart. This is going to be YOUR year of success!

So now, get going....

What are You looking forward to?

One of the best ways I have found to remain "fired-up" is to have something exciting to look forward to. Maybe it's a vacation, or the completion of a major project and the reward that follows. Having that "something" makes every moment so worthwhile! It provides that wonderful passion and natural enthusiasm.

A friend in Scottsdale is preparing to run her first New York City marathon. During a recent training run with her, she was so excited that her feet barely touched the ground. She was flying along the running trail with a cheerful smile on her face as she talked about the excitement of running this race with her friend. Goals are those things we look forward to accomplishing. She enjoys her daily training run with enthusiasm and passion as she visualizes crossing the finish line in Central Park. She's going to accomplish her goal and there is no doubt about that! Rachel is looking forward to wearing that finisher's medal!

Many of us set goals for 2010. Do you look at them daily, as a reminder to stay on track?
Remember the Law of Attraction. We tend to attract people and things into our life, by visualizing what we "Want" to happen. So as you look forward to the successful accomplishment of your goal, be aware of the resources you attract into your life.

We are nearly finished with the first month of the new year. I hope you are as excited about 2010 as you were in December. I tell myself daily that The Best is Yet to Come!
If you have something exciting to look forward to - good for you. Now help someone else get back on track. We continue to pay if forward and look forward!

Always Optimistic ~

I've never heard of dragos roua but it was only 4 weeks ago when I didn't know about tiny urls - until Paul Castain brought my knowledge into this century! So what do I know or rather, how much more don't I know? Scary thought....

I do like the way dragos writes and his attitude is just the type we have here on Optimist Island.

Please share your comments and any other blogs I should be aware of.
Thank you friends ~
I remember visiting Phoenix when I drove cross-country with my best friend, Ken Garrepy, in 1975. As we drove by the foothills at sunrise, I remember telling Ken that someday I would live in Arizona. That goal has not changed! There's something magical and comfortable here that puts me at ease. So that move remains on my Goals List and Vision Board. Keep your ears open for opportunities for me, okay? Until then, I will make the best of life in the Boston area. Summer is just 5 months away!

I share this story because I know how important it is to have goals and visualize the successful achievement of those goals. It's amazing just how much you can actually accomplish, once that goal is planted solidly in your mind. Somehow you attract people and situations into your life that help make those goals a reality. I don't know how it happens. I only know that it does! These were my thoughts as I walked for an hour in Paradise Valley at 5 am this morning. Those positive thoughts were a great way to start my day! Visualization Rocks!!

So here we are 15 days into the new year. How are your new habits going so far? I hope you are exercising like you planned. If not, here is a gentle hand of encouragement. Go out for a walk and enjoy some quiet mental time. You'll enjoy it so much that you'll want to go again tomorrow. Do something good for yourself because in my opinion, you deserve it! Remember, every day is an opportunity to start fresh and make changes.

Enjoy your weekend, have hope and share your kindness!

Always Optimistic,
He was the featured speaker at a Healthy Living expo just about 20 minutes from home. What a fantastic talk! Now I understand how he has helped so many people fight back from cancer and other ills.

Here are just a few quotes from my notes.
"Don't let the child in you die. Get your childhood pictures out and put them around your home. LOVE THAT KID!" "Enjoy yourself - it's later than you think." "Don't dwell on things that happened to you 35 years ago. LIVE! Life is about living not dwelling."

"Laugh as much as possible. It cures many illnesses." "When someone gets mad at you or is driving you crazy ~ look at them and say I Love You! That'll stop them and at least be curious."

"Connections and relationships keep us alive."
"95% of women would do a favor for a friend if they were asked. EVEN if they did NOT want to do it. Just say NO - or else you are denying Yourself. Take care of yourself."

"What has happened in your life? Those feelings become your chemistry. Deal with the inner feelings that are eating you. Many illnesses are from these "feelings" that are deep inside. Resolve them and get living."

IF you want more info on Dr. Siegel - go to his website
http://www.berniesiegelmd.com

I read "Love, Medicine and Miracles" in 1989 and loved it!
Last night I bought "365 Prescriptions for the Soul"

I wish you all the best! Enjoy today and time with your friends. Live and Smile!
Your friend,
12. Don't have negative thoughts or things you cannot control.
Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
13. Don't over do. Keep your limits.
14. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
15. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip.
16. Dream more while you are awake
17. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need..
18. Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner with
His/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness.
19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate
others.
20. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.
21. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
22. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn.
Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away
like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
23. Smile and laugh more.
24. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree...

Society:
25. Call your family often.
26. Each day give something good to others.
27. Forgive everyone for everything.
28. Spend time w/ people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6.
29. Try to make at least three people smile each day.

30. What other people think of you is none of your business.
31. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends
will. Stay in touch.

Life:
32. Do the right thing!
33. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
34. GOD heals everything.
35. However good or bad a situation is, it will change..
36. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
37. The best is yet to come..
38. When you awake alive in the morning, thank GOD for it.
39. Your Inner most is always happy. So, be happy.

Last but not the least:
40. Please Forward this to everyone you care about, I just did.

patricia hart

seabands@comcast.net

One of their songs is playing in my head this morning after two Very successful days of presentations in Boston. I believe the title is Getting Better All the Time. Remember the words? "I must admit it's getting better, a little better all the time."

This week I was involved in a sales training meeting in Boston. The company hosting the meeting just had their Best year in sales - in 50 years. The enthusiasm and excitement was incredible and fun to be around. Maybe it's just my Optimistic mind playing games on me, but I get a sense that the economy and attitudes are slowly turning more positive. If you were in the room with me, you would have been smiling as much as I am right now.

SO WHAT? My point is this. I'm not sure where your mind is these days ~ but if you've just experienced a year from a horror movie, leave it where it belongs. (that would be in the past) What are the "take-aways" and lessons and experiences that you can learn from? Everything happens for a reason and for some silly reason, many of us got a taste of the worst economy in 70 years. It feels, sounds and looks like we are making a turn to a more positive economy. So put a smile on your face and go make things happen!

I must admit it's getting better, a little better all the time! Continue plugging away on your goals. It's already the 7th day of the New Year, so I hope you are still following your new habits and positive routines.
Have fun. Have hope. Help someone who needs a boost! Together we will succeed!

Top 8 Excuses NOT to workout and an Optimist's solution

Excuse #1. "I'm just too busy!" Really? Keep a daily journal per hour of your activities. How much time do you spend: watching TV new or sitcoms? Reading the newspaper? Laying in bed after you are wide awake? I will bet you can carve 30 minutes if not 1 1/2 hours from those activities alone. Exercise will give you energy, help you be more productive and make you feel better about yourself. Those other activities will NOT do anything positive for you or for your fitness level. Best use of your time??

Excuse #2. "I tried exercising last year - but quit after 3 weeks." C'mon, that was last year. If you exercise every day for 30 days ~ it will become a habit....a very good habit. The past does not predict the future. Get off your buns and do Something!

Excuse #3. "It's just too cold, or too hot, or too dark, or too rainy!" Join a gym or fitness center and you'll be surrounded by others who have a mission to get fit. The weather is Always good at a fitness center. The energy and encouragement is contagious!

Excuse #4. "I've had this nagging back, or hip, or foot for years now. So I can't exercise."
Go see a doctor and get repaired. "for years" is too long. Take care of the problem and get on with your life. IF you Don't take care of this now - how do you think you'll feel in 5, 10 or 15 years?

Excuse #5. "I don't have anyone to exercise with." Walk on your own with a Friendly ipod and the time will fly by. Or, find a friend who is as committed as you are to finally get in shape. If you can't ~ then read #3 again.

Excuse #6. "I'll start in the Spring." Really? Why wait four months? If you start now, you'll be in much better shape, have more energy and feel better in 8 weeks. Then in the Spring, you can run/walk your first 5 kilometer race. (that's 3.1 miles) Now you have a goal!

Excuse #7. "My family is big-boned so I have to just accept the shape I'm in."
Your bones account for only 20% of your weight so....
It's not the bones that are causing the excessive weight and physical hassles - it's all the junk that has built up around them. You don't have to have bad habits just because your family does. Your life and health are Your responsibility. If you burn more calories than you consume then you will gradually get into better shape.

Excuse #8. "I work too much or travel too much - so I don't have time to workout."
You can always make time for 30 minutes of activity. Walking is easy....even on the treadmill at the hotel. Get up earlier, get to bed earlier, turn the TV off and get off your buns! ALWAYS pack or travel in your walking or running shoes. They take up little space in your luggage. And if you keep the exercise program going for 30 days, you'll take up less space in the airplane seat.

I know several people at our OpenDoors yoga studio who lost 100 pounds in the last couple of years - through exercise and slight food consumption changes. Find stories of people who made positive changes in their life and fitness ~ then just copy their recipe for success.

In 25 years, I have Coached many people to get into the best shape of their life ~ so I know you can do it. Remember, when you find a strong enough reason (a WHY) then you will find a HOW!

Happy New Year! Design a great and successful one for you!

Lessons learned in 2009

I know that 2010 is just 3 days away ~ but before we blast into the New Year with great excitement, I have a question for you. What were the best parts and lessons of 2009?

Some people I have spoken with have written off the entire year as a catastrophe. I know a lot of folks felt a LOT of pain and despair - but I'd find it hard to believe that nothing positive happened in their life this year. I guess it depends on what you want to focus your energy on. Call me an optimist - but if I had to shovel through a room of manure looking for the pony in there ~ I'll do it!

Just to get this conversation going, I'll share some of the best parts and lessons for me.
I do hope YOU will share at least One thing that's not too personal ~ or share that with me on my private email. :)

One of my many goals was to be listed at the top of Google when my name was typed into the search box. In January, I was listed on page 3. Thanks to Mark Lewis and Paul Castain who have taught me more about blogging, social media, keywords and how to be more active on my website - my name and company is listed first whenever my name is searched.

Although you may not be surprised, there a Lot of Neil Wood people out there - from world class surfers to soccer stars. I wanted to be listed first so that my positive messages, iTunes and YouTube programs could be easily found and subsequently give people hope to persevere! All of these are free ~ as my mission to be a Beacon of Hope.

Another goal was to workout at least 1 hour every day for 365 days. Mission accomplished and despite the horrendous economy ~ I'm in excellent physical shape. That's important to me because it keeps my mind fresh, attitude positive, energy level at a 10 on most days and it does wonders for confidence and self-esteem. I've also had a lot of fun working out and meeting new people.

I'm not going to bore you with what I wanted to accomplish~ but I'm proud about all the progress I made. I will tell you that I did NOT accomplish everything I wanted to. That's life! I gave it my best but the economy and budget cuts were out of my control. C'est la vie. When I look at all I did accomplish, it gives me momentum as we wrap this year up and surge into the new decade.

I do hope you will share even ONE meaningful highlight from 2009.
Until the next post ~ remain optimistic and have as much fun as possible!

Optimistically yours ~
Neil

Setting Goals the SMART way!

One of my friends sent a note on Facebook and asked me to share a few ideas on setting goals. So, I'll share an abbreviated version of my 90 minute Goals program. The mnemonic I have used for 25 years is SMART

1. S - Specific. Your goal(s) must be specific. Saying you want earn more, or be happier or lose some weight is too vague. Specifically how much do you want to earn this year? How much weight do you want to lose and by what date? "Some money or some weight is not specific. Once you have a specific goal, write it down on paper.

When I listened to Zig Ziglar's cassette on how to set goals (1977) I set two specific goals immediately. I wanted to lose 30 pounds and be able to run 6 miles without stopping. 6 months later ~ I accomplished both goals.

2. M - Measurable. Your progress must be measurable so that you can stay on track and feel good about the success you are having along the way. Create a "flight-plan" which notes where you are now, how you will get to your goal and estimated time of arrival.

When I flew from Boston to Denver last week, the pilot gave us periodic updates so we knew where we were and how close to our goal we were getting. As You reach these measurable points, give yourself a meaningful reward. We all know that Positive reinforcement goes a long way.

3. A - Attainable. You all know that I am an Optimist. I'm also a "Realist" ~ just so you know. My 15 year-old son came into the house with exciting news. He was going to enter a 150 mile bike race to help raise money for cancer. "Great!" I said. Since he doesn't ride his bike at all, I asked how many months he was going to train. "Oh, the race is in 5 days." he said. He never entered. When I gave myself 6 months to reach my goals - that was attainable, measurable and specific.

You DO want to set what I call "stretch" goals to keep you excited - and they should be attainable. Don't fall victim to "Happy Hope" and "Someday Isle" like many do.

4. R - Relevant. Your goal MUST be important to you. Write the reasons WHY you want to reach your goal(s). What will this success do for you?

One of my favorite coaching clients wanted to lose 60 pounds so that she could have more energy, sleep 6 hours instead of 10, fit into her size 4 pants again, (before she became overweight) -and she wanted to look more fit for the upcoming reunion with her college friends. Those goals were Very important and Relevant - and she accomplished her goals and feels like she's 26 again!

5. T - Time specific I've referred to this several times in this blog. Setting a specific date is Critical to going after your goals with passion. There's Nothing like a sense of urgency to help us get projects done. When I want to redecorate and clean my home - I just organize a big party about 4 weeks away. It's amazing what I can get done when I have a goal-line. (notice I don't call it a "dead-line")

So set a specific date to complete your goal by.

Finally, have a reward picked out when you reach your goal. Treat yourself. Maybe it's a weekend in Boca Raton or a flight to San Diego or dinner at your favorite restaurant.
Reward yourself for your discipline and success. Then, set more goals of course.

Reaching worthwhile goals has wonderful benefits. You will have increased confidence, self-esteem, pride and Optimism. Everyone I know who reaches goals regularly - is very optimistic and excited about LIFE and the incredible opportunities.

Be SMART and pursue your Goals with Passion!

Merry Christmas!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hzZawMEA9M

Good morning Friends! It's still very quiet here while everyone is sound asleep. That will change in an hour so I want to share this moment and wish you a Merry Christmas.

Gift yourself to something special and meaningful to you. Go on ~ do it without guilt.

We've all worked SO hard this year. Do something for YOU now. Get a massage, a spa treatment, a dinner with friends at your favorite restaurant or anything else that helps you feel better. Whatever it takes to help you smile and be happy about the great things you did for others this year.

I hear my daughter waking up ~ which means we are minutes away for a houseful of excitement, laughter, wrapping paper and SMILES!!!

I wish you all a Great day! Peace, good health and time with friends!
Merry Christmas!

Your friend,

I read as many books as I can every year because I enjoy learning new ideas and refreshing other thoughts in my mind. I've noticed that at the end of every year for the past 30, I tend to read books that inspire me for the new year. So, my gift to you today is to share six of my favorites. I welcome you to share your favorites too!

1. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (published in 1937) The title is misleading to people who have Not read it yet. When I ask my audience how many have read Think and Grow Rich, I always get a few "snickers" from those who think it's another book from The Donald. It's nothing like his books. Brian Tracy (one of my favorite speakers and sales trainers) says "This is the best single book on personal success ever written; it made me a millionaire - starting from nothing." Harvey Mackay, the New York Times Bestseller says "It's the classic of all classics." Buy 2 copies and give one to a friend who needs a boost these days.

2. The Power of Positive Thinking by Dr Norman Vincent Peale (published in 1952)
This is THE greatest inspirational bestseller our our time. I read it in 1970 when I was just 14 years old. It gave me great hope while I was living on welfare with my family.

3. Lifetime Plan for Success by Dale Carnegie. This book contains 2 bestsellers by Mr. Carnegie. How to Win Friends and Influence People (1936) and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living (1944) My guess is that most of you have read his books - but just in case you haven't yet, you may want to add it to your list. I even gave a copy to my teenage son and asked for a book report on it.

4. Unstoppable by Cynthia Kersey 45 Powerful stories of perseverance and triumph from people just like you. What a great read. She also wrote Unstoppable for Women.
There are so many inspiring stories in the book that I couldn't put it down!

5. The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino. I have a copy of Three Volumes In One which also contains The Greatest Secret in the World and The Greatest Miracle in the World.

6. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. I always smile when I look at this book because I was so "wowed" by it that I changed my license plate to WINWIN.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all of you. I wish you and your loved ones plenty of smiles, memorable moments and good health.

This is from the book, The Survivors Club.
I enjoyed it and hope you do also!

1. Practice Optimism
2. Identify a resilient role model
3. Develop a moral compass and unbreakable beliefs
4. Practice altruism - help others
5. Be flexible and adaptive
6. Face your fears and control negative emotions
7. Build active coping skills
8. Establish a social network to help you
9. Stay physically fit
10. Laugh as much as possible!

My mission continues to share as much optimism and hope with as many people as possible. Together, we can keep each other strong enough to make it to the more prosperous days ahead! Live, learn and pass the good news on!

Share your enthusiasm with anyone!

Yesterday I hosted 2 excellent workshops. I describe them as excellent because of the people who attended. They took notes, paid attention, asked questions and were engaged in the conversation for 75 minutes. I talked about Goal setting and How to remain energized and optimistic daily! Both topics are near and dear to me - especially in this economy.

Whenever I speak at an event, I tell the audience that I want them to gain at least ONE new idea that they can apply rather quickly to their life. I know they'll get more than one idea - but I would rather under-promise and over-deliver! I'm doing ALL I can to be a Beacon of Hope until the economy turns around and more people can have fun and laugh again. Sharing ideas about goals, attitude, daily activities and finding fellow optimists are some of the ideas I share with passion.

BUT finally, here is my point. Instead of only applying the idea to your life - what I REALLY want you to do is Share it with someone in need. We all know someone like that. People need encouragement, hope, a kind pat on the back and a smile!

So your mission - if you choose to accept it - is to make a difference in someone's day. The best part of this idea is that you will BOTH feel better! Remember, a candle lighting another candle, loses nothing. When you read a quote that inspires you or even makes you laugh - share it with at least one other person. Then again, share it with 3 people!

Have fun, laugh, smile and do the best you can!

The Most Optimistic Guy I've ever known!

In 1978, I had the great fortune of meeting Colonel Tom Kirk. He became my mentor and friend - then taught me lessons in life that I'll remember forever. Tom was a fighter pilot during the Viet Nam war. During a bombing mission, his jet was shot down and he was captured then imprisoned at the Hanoi Hilton. For nearly 4 1/2 years - he was tortured daily, starved and you can only imagine what else.

But Tom's story is about hope, optimism and persistence. When I asked Tom what separated those POW's who gave up and died - compared to those who survived and went on to live successful lives, he gave me a very simple answer.

Tom told me the he thought about his family back home and looked forward to the day they would all be together again. He had exciting goals that gave him hope. He also played the saxophone "in his mind", which provided a pleasant distraction. But the real "Aha" moment was the thought process he experienced when he was released from the POW camps. This was the advice that helped me get over my own "pity party" about my past.

"Neil, we all have challenges in our past and we cannot change those situations. They happened for a reason. Maybe to make us stronger, maybe to teach us lessons or maybe so that we could appreciate the better times. Whatever the reasons, we cannot change the past. BUT, the future is in your hands right now. YOU are responsible for your success now. Write your goals on paper, surround yourself with other great attitudes - like yours and help other people succeed in life. If you do those things - I know you will be Very Successful!"

Tom is still the most optimistic guy I know - even at age 80. He Loves Life!!

So the takeaway here is to focus on your future and don't dwell in the past. Create exciting goals for yourself! Stay away from negative people, negative TV news and negative environments. Read or listen to something inspiring and positive for 5-15 minutes each morning. It will jump-start your day with energy and optimism.

If Tom can survive 4 1/2 years of torture in prison - then I'm certain we can survive this whacky economy. Have hope, take charge of your life and make a difference in the lives around you!

Your attitude is YOUR choice - every minute, hour & day!

There aren't many things in life that we have much control over. It makes no sense to complain about the weather, the economy or politics - because no matter how much we moan and groan, it won't do any good...but can certainly be harmful!

Here's your thought for the day:
"It is not what happens to us that makes a difference. It's how we react to it and what action we take next." Keep things in perspective and make the best of the situation.

Be aware of the positive things that happen each day. IF you do that - instead of watching for the negatives, you will have more energy, a better attitude and better relationships!
