Doctor Fate Hoodie/Amulet

Testing out my new fancy sewing machine with a cosplay project! I've been meaning to make a Doctor Fate costume for a long time. The new version of Doctor Fate seemed easy enough to do, so I dove right into it.

Here are the progress pictures!

Vampire the Masquerade Circle of Crones Box

So, it's about time I started LARPing...a local group is running Vampire the Masquerade. One of the players had a box in the shape of a book to hold her items and I thought I'd fancy it up a little. Here's how you can make you own!

Materials:

Box in the shape of a book (Michaels ususally has some)

Acrylic paint (I used black, red, and gold)

Matte clear spray paint

Hot glue gun/hot glue

Gesso

Brushes

Painter's tape

1. Strip the book box (you can skip this step if you don't mind having a shinier texture)

2. Draw the design onto the book with a marker and trace over it with hot glue.

3. Cover the entire box with gesso (do at least two coats to even out the small bumps on the surface)

4. Paint the entire box black then dab on red paint with a dry brush

5. Paint the hot glue parts with gold paint.

6. Add more details with gold paint

And we are done!

Princess Peach Crown

Materials:

Scissors, ruler, pen/marker
Craft foam
Worbla (wonderflex would work too)
Heat gun
Acrylic paint (black, white, and gold)
Hot glue gun and glue
60mm round acrylic gems (2 red and 2 blue)

Let's get started!

1. Gather materials

2. Draft a rough crown pattern on the foam and cut it out. I cut it into 4 pieces so it'll be easier to heat/reshape for the worbla. You can do it all in once piece if you are using a different material.

3. Roughly cut out pieces of worbla to cover the crown pieces.

4. Use a heat gun to heat up the worbla pieces and seal the foam between the worbla.

5. Connect the worbla-covered pieces together to shape a basic crown.

6. Roughly draw design details onto the basic crown.

7. Add the details with strips of worbla.

8. Spray paint the crown with a black base. *I usually prime the worbla with gesso, I ran out of time and did not do so for this piece, so the texture of the crown came out a little more rough.

9. Dab on a layer of gold paint with a dry brush and a tiny dab of water.

10. Trace the shadows with black paint, and high light with white paint.

11. Hot glue on the gems and we are done!

I put two little hooks on the bottom of the crown so it can be attached to hair/wigs with pins.

Hail Hydra Pie

Super Easy Hail Hyda Pie for your geeky needs!

Materials:

9 inch pie pan
butter for greasing

For Crust,
2 sheets of frozen puff pastry

Fillings,
2 cans of 12 oz. pitted sweet cherries
1/2 cup of brown sugar

Or pre-made pie filling of your choice.

Directions:

Filling
1. Drain the canned cherries.
2. Place cherries in sauce pan on low heat.
3. Add brown sugar and spoon in water until sugar dissolve
4. Stir until mixture is simmering and all the sugar is dissolved
5. Turn off stove and put the filling aside.

Crust
1. Thaw puff pastry for 40 min at room temperature, or over night in the fridge.
2. Grease pie pan with butter.
3. Gently press puff pastry onto pan to form bottom of the crust.
4. Trim off excess pastry around the pan.
5. Place pie filling in the pan.
6. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.
7. Make 6 tentacles and a skull from the trimmings and the second sheet of pastry
8. Place tentacles and skull in the pan.
9. Press the tentacles and skull a little so they are soaking in the pan.

10. Place in oven on lower rack for 25 minutes.

Steampunk Cat Mask Tutorial

I made this fun cat mask for a Steampunk tea party at the Geek Bar in Chicago. Here's a tutorial for making your own!

You will need:

Craftfoam

Hot glue

Mod podge mold

Gesso

Acrylic paint

Acrylic sealant

Pattern - I used the cat mask pattern from Chris Huebert
A LOT of patience

Optional: worbla/thermalpastics

Let's get started:

print out the pattern

you can absolutely make your own if you are good with pattern drafting!

Trace it onto craft foam, twice.

Cut out the foam (cat helper optional)

Optional: trace the pattern onto worbla and cut out the pieces

Optional: Heat and wrap the warbla around the foam.

Match and glue the pieces together

Worbla sticks to itself when heated, you can use contact cement or hotglue if you are only using foam

Start shaping the mask to head.

The eye hole were a bit small for me, so I enlarged it a bit.

All the mask pieces together.

Add ears.

Embellish as you like.

I used a mod podge hot glue mold for the cogs but you can also cut them out of cardboard.

The lens was from a pair of reading glasses from the dollar store.

Prime with gesso. Lens covered in painter's tape.

Prime again with black acrylic paint then start on first layer with a dry brush.

I used bronze for the main colour and gold for the embellishments.

Seal it with a clear acrylic sealant (I used satin) and we are done!

Steampunk Book Box

Michaels always have these little book box things on sale so I grabbed one for $2 and made it into something I can carry around as a clutch.

This project is pretty simple. All the work can be done in less than an hour but it does take a day for it to dry. All you need is the book box, hot glue, paint, and an acrylic sealant.

Let's get started:

Cover the sides (fake page prints) with painter's tape.

Draw a design that you want on it and trace it with hotglue.

I used a modge podge hotglue mold for the gear but you can also make them out of cardboard.

Prime with gesso and black paint

Paint with a very dry blush.

I used bronze for the base colour and antique gold for the details.

I like to add a thin black line around the details to make them pop.

Spray with an acrylic sealant and you are done!

I used a satin finish since I didn't want it to look too glossy.

DIY Masquerade Mask - Fun with hot-glue and some paint!

There are so many different ways of making these masks but this method is as easy as it gets. It takes about 5 minutes of actual work.I recommend watching this fun instructional video on making the mask with the same method and includes free patterns.

So let's get started!

You will need:

Hot glue gun

Acrylic Paint (spray paint if you have good ventilation)

wax paper

Ribbons or strings

Template - found on Google search.

Print out the pattern and put a layer of wax paper/cookie sheet over it. I had to tape down the edges so the wax paper doesn't shift around when I put the hot glue on.

Slowly trace the pattern with the hotglue - take a bit of practice to get it right, especially if you have a cheap glue gun.

Peel off the mask after the glue cools completely (15-20 min)

Paint with colour of your choice. Spray paint would work MUCH better in terms of filling in the little nooks and cranny and is much faster, but I don't have much ventilation in this apartment so I just used acrylic paint.

Optional: add secondary colour

Add ribbon or string to tie to your head.

Warm the dried mask between your hands for a min and press it on your face for about 5 minutes so it molds to your face.

Pretend you are a superhero (or villain) with psychic abilities, because we all know this pose means I have psychic powers.

And make more masks because it's super easy!

Cat Pendant - More Worbla Fun!

Made this for my best friend (and my favourite crazy cat lady). Here are some progress pics!

I painted a pretty rock and drew a basic pattern on worbla. (The cat's my signature).

Melt the pieces together to make the back.

Melt a strip around the pretty rock.

Wrapped a piece of worbla around a crochet hook and melt onto the gem.

Heat up the back and attach to the back of the gem.

Added ears to the front.

Primed with gesso.

Primed with black paint.

Painted the worbla part and sealed with an acrylic sealant.

Add ribbons and we are done!

Doctor Fate's Amulet of Anubis (prototype)

I am planning a Doctor Fate costume for my first armor project. This is a prototype of the Amulet of Anubis to test out the size, design, techniques, etc.

Here are the progress pictures:

Drew a rough design on my iPad.

Painted a pretty rock, and drew a rough pattern on a piece of cardboard with a can of cat food.

The cardboard was from the box the cat food had arrived in!

Trace pattern onto the worbla twice and cut out the patterns.

Heat up worbla and sandwich the cardboad in between them and trip excess.

Melted some leftover worbla together.

Rolled it around the pretty rock.

Flattened out the worbla wad onto the circular piece from before and added some details

Heated up a small square of worbla and rolled it around a knitting needle.

Attached the small worbla piece to the top of the amulet.

Covered center with tape and primed with gesso.

Primed with a gold and black acrylic mix since I wanted a shinier look.

First coat of colour.

Traced the edges with black lines.

Added runes and white lines for highlight.

(For those who want to find deeper meaning in life, the runes are Daedric and spell "WALRUS")

Sealed with an acrylic spray paint.

Added a cord (I'll find something more cosmic powery looking in the future) and we are done!

Warhammer 40k Space Wolf Bracers

I actually started on this bracer before making eldritch ones but had to wait for some materials to arrive before I could finish it. In case you are wondering why I am making so many bracers, it is because I just started playing with worbla. Bracers are relatively simple to make and take less material than other pieces of armor if I make a mistake.

As usual, here are some progress shots:

Sketched out a rough design on my iPad, using Paper.

Drew the pattern on a piece of craft foam (the first wolf was too derpy so I had to draw another one).

Cut out the foam and two pieces of worbla that were large enough to cover the foam.

Covered the foam with heated worbla.

It took a couple heating for the details on the wolf to show up.

Curved the entire piece by pacing it on a vodka bottle.

Added details with strips of worbla.

Primed it with many, many, many, many, many layers of gesso.

Primed again with a couple layers of black acrylic paint.

Painted with a rough layer of base colours.

Added some highlights.

Added some "battle scars" and sealed it with an acrylic spray.

Now, for attaching the straps to the back.

Bend some garden wire into little rings (you should take better care of your pliers than I did with mine...poor thing was falling apart with rust).

Attached the rings to the back of bracer with small pieces of heated worbla.

Sew nylon webbing and buckles onto the rings.

And we are done! The straps are adjustable.

Eldritch Eye Bracer - Worbla and Pretty Rocks

Cold days and WoW servers down meant more arts and crafts! This bracer is made with a pretty rock I painted and Worbla (a kind of thermoplastic). Visit my facebook page for more Worbla fun!

I learned about thermoplastics and painting armor from books by a cosplayer named Kamui. She has many excellent tutorials and books so I will not explain it any further here. Instead, please enjoy the progress pictures!

I started with a basic pattern and a rock I painted to look like red eye (with GLITTERS)

Then I used my heat gun (the pink phallic thing in the background) to activate the worbla and molded it to my wrist.

Added a little bit of detail and drew on a basic design.

Added more details and molded the "eye" onto the bracer.

Covered the eye with painter's tape. Primed with 10-15 (who's really counting any way) layers of gesso to even out the small dents. This is the hardest part - apparently, watching paint dry is REALLY boring (rum helped).

Cover with black acrylic paint.

Paint with coloured acrylic paint.

Fix all the small nooks and crannies, then seal with an acrylic spray.

And we are done! No need to add claps or anything since it was molded to my wrist.

Make Pretty Rocks!

Unemployment sometimes means my creative side just explodes. I made these while waiting for WoW servers to come back up. They look as if they could hold powers of a cosmos but are actually really simple and cheap to make.

Here's how to make some of your own:

Materials:

Mosaic Rocks (about $2/15 at Michael's)

Cheap nail polish - glittery ones (Wet n' Wild is usually around $1/bottle)

Black Acrylic Paint (if you want a darker background)

Aluminum foil

More glitter (if you want more sparkles)

1. Paint a thin coat of glitter nail polish on the flat side of the rock and wait for it to dry.

2. Add some glitter to it while the nail polish is still wet, brush off the excess glitter.

2a. Alternatively, add a different colour nail polish.

3. Once the polish is dry, coat the back with a solid layer of black acrylic paint.

4. Once the black acrylic paint dries, coat with a layer of clear nail polish to seal.

OPTIONAL:

While the clear top coat is drying, stick a piece of aluminum foil underneath and cut off the excess. I do this just in case I missed a spot when covering it with acrylic paint.

Experimenting is fun!

Super Soft Winter Hat!

I've wanted to knit with the Noro Shiraito yarn for some time now. This super-duper-soft yarn is made with an angora and cashmere blend. It's a bit pricey ($30/skein) normally but I managed to grab the last skein that was on sale at the local yarn shop last week.

Naturally, instead of applying for jobs, I sat at home and knit this hat. At first, I felt like a clumsy moose because the yarn kept on breaking. I had to experiment with the tension quite a bit so the brim of the hat came out a little wonky.

Here's how I made the hat:

I used a US 3 circular needle and the entire skein, about 195 yrd. It was knit in the round. Final size of the hat is about 22" circumference and 10" in height

First, the yarn is offer for cat approval. As you can see here, Lady is showing nonchalance, the cat way of saying she approves, maybe, quite probably.

Hat brim - CO 108. Start with rounds of knit stitch (I did 3). Then a couple rows of K3 P1 until the end. (I did 15). Purl one round when you are done with the brim.

Hat Body - Start with rows of k1 rounds and add the wavy lace pattern to create the wavy bar when you see fit. I did 10 rounds of k1, wavy lace rounds, 6 rounds of k1, wavy lace rounds, then another 10 rounds of k1.

To do the wavy lace pattern:

1. P1 to the end

2. k1 to the end

3. K2tog 6 times, (YO K1) 6 times to the end.

4. P1 to the end

Hat crown - At this point, you can really use any kind of decrease you like for hats.

I did:

k2tog 6 times, and k1 6 times to the end of round

K1 to end for 2 rounds

k2tog 4 times, k1 4 times to the end of round

k1 to end for 1 round

K2tog to the end of the round.

Thread tail through the stitches and close the hat

Add a pompom if you have left over yarn.

I didn't block the hat because I'm not very experienced with cashmere/angora and don't want to risk the yarn breaking in the process.

Dice Bag!

I have been playing video games quite a bit since my life as a student has ended. Now my life as a lowly intern has commenced! I have a bit over an hour of commute to work each way and this bag was knitted entirely on the subway/buses. It took about a week to complete.

I did not follow a pattern since I suck at sticking to them, but here's how I made it.

Needle size/gauge/yarn weight doesn't matter here. But I used a wool/nylon bend sock yarn (gift from my best friend) and size 2 needles.

Cast on 8.
Divide stitches onto 4 double pointed needles (2 on each needle).
Join (don't twist your work!)
For each of the 4 needles, make 1 (or however you want to increase) then knit to the end.
The idea is one increase per needle until it forms the desired size for bottom of the bag.
Find a cable pattern you like (or wing it) and knit each of the rows for the pattern four times, i.e. knit row 1 on first needle, row 1 on second needle, row 1 on third needle, row 1 on fourth needle, row 2 on first needle, row 2 on second needle ....
When the bag is about an inch from desired length, start knit stitches in the round until it reaches the desired length
Bind off
Make i-cord (directions here) long enough to go around the open mouth of the bag twice.
Thread i-cord through the knit stitch area at the top of the bag and you are done!

Hand Dyeing Acrylic Yarn

I was a bit skeptical about dying acrylic yarn at first, since it's basically trying to dye plastic, but the yarn turned out beautifully and the process was very simple as well! All I used are some acrylic paint (the 90 cents ones you get from wal-mart) and water.

First, wind your ball of yarn into a hank.

Then, wet the hank with water. (Yes, that's a chip/dip holder thing)

Next, apply acrylic paint. (I thinned out the paint with water and just poured the coloured water on)

This next step is the hardest part, hang it up to dry and try not to play with it too much and get paint everywhere.

After a day or so (I put a heater in front of it at night), it's ready to go!

I prefer center-pull balls!

And it's ready to be used!

I will be making a kitty mat (for catching litter) with this pretty yarn. Stay tuned for updates!

Divine Soraka Staff Tutorial

Let's get started!

Wooden mop handle (cheaper than dowels) and cardboard

*I recommend PVC pipes for a lighter prop

Cut the cardboard base into desired shape

Layer with expanding foam (tutorial video here - by Kamui Cosplay)

Carve expanding foam (this is half the mess, I cleaned the floor once already)

Lots of caves in the foam, which is normal.

Layer with painter's tape to cover the holes on the surface and give the next layer something to grip onto

Layer with strips of newspaper and wallpaper paste (tutorial video here)

My cat smoothed on a layer of paper mache for me. I also started priming the wood part with gesso.

The paper mache dried with very bumpy surface (I mistakenly used quick-dry kind) and needs to be sanded. It's a bit cold outside for me to do sanding right now, so stay tuned for more progress when it gets warmer!

I almost gave up this project due to some unexpected hardship. Thanks to a good friend (who transported this staff for me over 700 miles!) I was able to finish it.

Sanded a little bit by hand. I would recommend a mouse/handheld sander for the job but I live in a small apartment with almost no ventilation, so that was not going to work.

Heat up small pieces of wonderflex and cover the staff.

I used wonderflext because it is a bit cheaper than worbla.

There will still be a lot of seams like this.

Heat up the seams and flatten them out with any cylindrical object (beer bottles work too)

You can also use a dremel to sand out the lines but good ventilation is needed.

Seams flattened out.

Drew a basic design of the details.

I didn't like the original design, so there's a bit of improvisation.

Heat up small strips of wonderflex and roll it up.

Place the details on the staff as marked

(or not, I don't like to follow directions, even my own)

Prime with at least 5-6 layers of gesso after all the details are attached.

(The pink stuff are placeholder for gems)

Prime with black paint.

First layer of paint

Second layer of painting and accentuating details with black shadows.

Cat is helping.

Seal paint with a layer of satin acrylic spray.

You can also use glossy acrylic spray if you'd like a more metallic staff.

Wrap the handle with some brown ribbons. Cat helper optional.

Cast some acrylic gems for the socket

(sorry I did not take enough pictures of a full tutorial for this part)

Paint it using this technique.

And we are done!

I had to used a 15 x 15 pillow insert since I, apparently, really suck at stuffing with fiberfill.

I put my boyfriend's and my initials on the back since this pillow is for the home we'll be moving in together.

Watercolor Nami (League of Legends)

A lot of people think I'm naturally a support player (cleric, healer, etc.), but the reason I play support is so that I can "accidentally" let people die when they piss me off.

Anyway, here's my favorite support from League of Legends, Nami - the Tidecaller.

Something I learned from doing this painting - boobies are REALLY hard to shade.

Mona Cat!

Yup, another cat painting.

This is my kitty Mona. I adopted her from a shelter five years ago and she's the sweetest kitty I've ever met.

Here are some progress pictures.

1) Fist wash with a mix of blue and red (which turned out grey).

2) A little more color and background.

3)Added some texture with a smaller brush

5)Added darker shadows and white fur.

Horray! Summer shinnanigans! For this summer, I picked up watercolor. This painting is inspired by the episode of Doctor Who where the Doctor described the T.A.R.D.I.S. as a cat (because she was being mean to Oswin).

Here are some progress pictures.Constructive criticism welcome.

1) Outline with pencil and some shading in eyes. Paper's actually white, camera's just infected with my Asian-ness.

2) Applied some masking fluid on the fur to preserve the whites.

3) In hindsight, I probably should have researched on how to paint a cat BEFORE I started painting a cat.

4) Did some research on how to paint a cat.

5) Apparently Doctor Who fans have created Gallifreyan!

6) Masked the Gallifreyan in the back to preserve the colour and painted the first layer of background.

7) Masked another layer of Gallifreyan on the bottom then added more colours and salt.

8) Rubbed off the masking fluid and salt with my fingers and added a little white on the TARDIS kitty's fur.

RAM Jewelry Set (Georgia Innocence Project Edition)

I had a surprisingly emotional and wonderfully educational summer interning at the Georgia Innocence Project (GIP).

Like any other small, non-profit organization, GIP is only able to afford hand-me-down computers that barely trudged along. I managed to salvage a couple RAM from one of the more ancient models that finally croaked and used the RAM to make a jewelry set.

This set is available for purchase at the GIP 10th anniversary celebration where a silent auction will be held to raise (much needed) funds. Each piece was once used to help free the wrongfully prosecuted. The Making:

Borrowed a dremel and a drill from a friend, who also did the cutting/drilling

Cutting the pieces on a cardboard box

Due to the amount of metal on the board, it was very hard to cut straight. Only four pieces came out presentable. I think a lot of the credit should go to a friend who cut up and drill holes in the pieces but he preferred to remain anonymous.
