One of the founders of the genres of music which I love, and the only one that is still around. I didn't know they were still together, let alone, released a CD a month or two ago.

Piebald.

I had learned about the show when I went and saw Fear Before The March of Flames and Heavy Heavy Low Low. I was surprised to see the lineup, let alone Piebald. They played with MC Chris. He is a rapper who huffed helium and raps for cartoons. The crowd was really .. Divided. You could tell who was there for who. MC Chris had the bigger fan base there, even though Piebald headlined.

You could just tell by looking at them. MC Chris nerds. Aquateen fanatics.

MC Chris had people raise their hands if they loved weed. You could tell the guys who were there for piebald cause our hands wernt up.

Someone defiantly yelled "Piebald!".

The first two opener bands were surprisingly good.. Especially the second one The House of Fools. They had an amazing classic rock sound, and even did a Floyd cover. I'm working on getting the CD, and keeping an eye on them in the future. Theyre touring with He is Legend, but they think they're dropping the tour before it comes back up here. Nice stuff. The first band was some month old band out of Portland. The lead singer had some serious talent, and they did pretty good considering the circumstances.

All the MC Chris fools left after he was done. His act was funny, but anyone who payed just to see him is a moron who doesn't appreciate music.

Piebald was amazing. Period. I was front and center and knew all the words to all the songs except the new ones of their new CD, (not that good.) There was like 5 people around me like me. The .. 30 or so people who came for Piebald, and stayed for Piebald, was the liveliest group I've ever been apart of. Jumping pushing, singing. True fans clearly. It was the funnest set of my life. Andrew got decked.

The concert as a whole was on par with the He Is Legend/ Fall of Troy show.

They played all the songs I wanted to hear except "Watch her Flow" and "King of the Road". They had a real good feel of the songs people wanted to hear though. They encored with a ACDC cover, accompanied by MC Chris and they guys from House of Fools. Impressive.

Then I got the guys to sign my hat, cause they're Boston boys, it's a Boston hat, and I'm a sick fan boy. Love Piebald. All of this with a Sharpie I literally stole from MC Chris and his manager. lol In front of them.

Corey J. This album is pretty good, with two songs in particular standing out clearly. Try to take a listen to "Blizzard of '77" and "The Way You Hold Your Head".

Their Second album got them airplay with the song "Popular". This single put them in the light and got them to the Billboard top 200. They signed a deal with Elektra records, who dropped them very quickly because nothing on their 1998, "Proximity Effect" album stuck out to them.

The band released it over in Europe and hit it big.

Their most recent release "The Weight is a Gift" was put out in 2005.

Nada Surf- Blonde on Blonde
off of their Let Go album. Rob Crow, came from Heavy Vegetable, who are (to say the least) an interesting rock group. Some of Heavy Vegetable's stuff was really catchy. This is also true about the band that Armistead "Zach" Smith came from, Three Mile Pilot.

They only started part time, because Three Mile Pilot wasn't really through yet. However, when their first albulm came out, people realized the potential, and the members buckled down and strapped in.

In 1999 they released a self titled album, toured some, and then when on to make "Some Voices" EP and the a full release titled "Blue Screen Life". By now they were touring across North American and Europe, producing along the way. These tour only EPs consisted of many live takes and alternate versions. One of these is my favorite Pinback album. It's called "Live in Donny's Garage" and is one of the 5 most amazing CDs as a whole I have ever heard. So much talent and intricacy. These are all alternate, and in my opinion, much better spins on classic Pinback songs.

In 2003 they released the Offcell EP and followed up the next year on Touch and Go Records with "Summer in Abaddon". Produced by only two guys, these guys produce and switch on and off with mind boggling complex lyrics and musical riffs. And beleive me, they are masters of catchiness, with their roots being where they are.

I know I'm excited for the new cd expected for sometime 2007.

Pinback-AFK off of their "Summer in Abaddon" album.

Next band on my list is..

Corey J. Back after a long sojourn to the world of Ragnarok Online. I have come back to post a review of the newest He is Legend album. Suck out the Poison.

Now I know what you're thinking. Andrew, that CD came out a month ago! Regardless of how old this album is, I think it is important to review it because it is such a different CD than their previous two.

Suck out the Poison is a totally fresh, new sounding CD, that rocks harder than any of their other works. Now, Schuylars voice may have changed a bit. But dont criticize it just yet. Although he doesn't have that high, soft voice that he did on the I am Hollywood CD, the music from "Poison" adapted to Schuylar's new sound. Therefore, taking on a whole new sound as well.

As you listen through, you will notice heavier guitar parts, louder vocals, and a much dirtier/grittier feel to the CD. Another thing you might notice, is the distinct connection to some past songs. In "Dixie Wolf" at the end of the song, Croom cries out "YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT" A reference to "The Seduction" from I am Hollywood. Another impossible to miss connection would be in "China White II." Not only does it share the same name as it's Predecessor (Minus the II part.) But it also shares a similar musical theme with "China White."

As I listen to the CD, 5 songs stand out above the rest for me at least. "Attack of the Dungeon Witch," "China White II," "The Widow of Magnolia," "Electronic Throat," and "Goldie's Torn Locks." All of these songs have catchy guitar riffs and some Kick-Ass vocals. The lyrics are put together well, and it all makes sense logically. The music is easy to follow, but complex at the same time.

Overall, the CD is very good. Give it a listen, especially if you are a fan of He is Legend. If it doesn't tickle your fancy the first time 'round. Try listening to it again. Pay extra attention to some of the lyrics, becuase they will give you chills. (See China White II.)

The CD gets a 9.7 out of 10 for me. The only part I dont like is "Serpent Sickness." Watch out for the "little pig little pig.." part. It is awkward... and my only complaint about the entire thing!

Buy it, love it, love it some more.

Ta Ta for now.

~Andrew

P.S. I couldn't find a download. You'll just have to buy it at Best Buy for $7.99

Reuben's Accomplice

reubensaccomplice- Were not as Big As We Feel

Reuben's Accomplice was formed in the deserts of Arizona.

No they're not that random.

This band was born out of two highschool chum's love to play slayer riffs. I'm not being sarcastic. Starting off from highschool talent shows they have landed a major record label deal, and that isnt even of recent. Since then, they have toured with big mainstreams like Jimmy Eat World, but still keep their music relatively unknown and unspoiled.

However dont let that one association turn you off.

They toured with classics such as the Promise Ring, and my favorite- No Knife.

After their first cd, they released a much better CD called "I Blame The Scenery" Which the this entry's song came from. Their most recent, The Bull The Balloon and The Family, which was produced by Jim Atkins of Jimmy Eat World is not as good. The song of the previous entry was on this cd. Guests on this CD are amazing though, which is the reference of "The Family". Guests include producer Adkins, Howe Gelb (Giant Sand, Band of Blacky Ranchette), David Bazan (Pedro the Lion), Jon Rauhouse (Neko Case, Old 97s), as well as a talented crew of West Coast luminaries (Matt Maher, Ryan Kennedy, John O’Reilly Jr.).

And then two guys left to become farmers.

The band has since reformed and is on Jim Atkins label- Western Tread Recordings.

Listen for the trumpet part in this entry's song- It's amazing. The part that goes "Heart Ache- Take Me Away" has an amazing harmony which deserves multiple bows.

Expect a reveiw of the new He Is Legend cd by Andrew coming up.

Corey J. One day Kerry accidentally showed up during their practice, and in brief: things happened, the band formed, and Christie Front Drive created some of the most amazing music I've heard. They released two LPs, and appeared on a variety of 7"s and compilations. The first LP and most of the 7"s were compiled onto a CD by Caulfield Records, and you might say the music lives on today not only from their body of work, but even through the countless bands who they influenced. CFD toured North America and recorded until they disbanded in 1996."

"After Christie Front Drive broke up, the members continued their musical pursuits in other bands. Jason and Ron formed The Blue Ontario who put out an awesome EP with two orginal songs and a few remixes. It came out on a clear vinyl 12" and CD, and I dunno where to get it now other than maybe eBay. Unfortunately, The Blue Ontatio also split up.

Since then, Ron became involved in a bunch of projects, including playing shows with Go Big Casino (Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World's side project), recording for a variety of musicians, and recently playing drums for a band by the name of ...and guppies eat their young.

Eric went on to Antarctica, an electronic-infused band who Pitchfork Media pretty keenly compared to The Cure and New Order. They went seperate ways, but left behind an EP and full-length, both put out on CD by File-13. Those albums can still be had in music stores.

Kerry took some time off, played briefly in a band called Esperanto, and in 2002 released an album under the name The Mighty Rime. The album almost sounds to me like a sparse Built to Spill (read: wow.) This one came out on Caulfield Records and can be found in a bunch of places, some of which you can find on the links page of this site. The link to The Mighty Rime's website can be found to the right.

Most recently, Eric has formed an awesome power-pop-post-something band called The 101. After a couple of line-up changes, their long awaited first EP was put out by the Self-Starter Foundation in 2003. See the link to the right to visit the band's website, for tour dates, mp3's and more."

These guys in this band went on to be in bands featured in Pitchfork Media and had contracts with File-13 records. This means that these guys rule. I am blown away that I didn't find them sooner, considering they were on the same label as some of my favorite 90's emo bands, like Mineral.

Speaking of emo, all are required to read the entirity of the new side link Define:Emo. This is the most accurate page on the entire internet on the subject so read up so you don't look like an ignorant child when you use the e word. This is common knowledge to me, and it good to know if you are reading the site. I dont want to see any person be like:

"Like OMG these guys are emo? As of now they are working on a full length. These guys are getting very good coverege because they have teamed up with San Diego-ites from a band called Pinback. Pinback rules the school and I pretty much have to write about them next. I have heard alot of their stuff and it is really awesome. Their original record label was a japenese one, and I'm probably assuming correctly that it was the same as their buddies Nine Days Wonder. These guys were really tight with NK and were formerly featured on the blog. They also toured with Jimmy Eat World. Not a personal favorite of mine by anymeans, but Jimmy Eat World, sometimes abbreviated as JEW (lawl) lists boilermaker as one of their biggest influences.. Funny how bad bands list greats ones as their influences. So the least they could do is let terrin tour with them.

Little known fact: Christ Prescott made the webpages by himself for all the bands.

Lets say.. Next time is Pinback or Get Your Death On! Or .. You know, the scene where the real emo came from? Yeah this is that kind of music.

Boilermaker played alongside No Knife in San Diego. They sound a bit like Sunny Day Real Estate.. They're both pioneers after all. And modern bands- The not so good ones- Like Jimmy Eat World cite Boilermaker as their primary influence.. Which I think is a shame. Poor Boilermaker.

Their isnt much to them. Their CDs were produced by a member Drive Like Jehu.. Another band that I intend to write about. After one CD the normal guys of Boilermaker were overwhelemed with the attention they stirred up (understanably) and went into hibernation. Their first CD, the only one Ive listen to.. Is AMAZING. I feel bad because I like all the songs as much as Ill like only one song on a Cd.
This track which is featured here is from that CD. However, they did come out with another CD before disbanding in 2000. These guys got together with the drummer of No Knife to create the Jade Shader- Which will be featured next week. They are signed to Tooth and Nail Records/Solid State Records which has produced many a fine bands. Anberlin, Underoath, Emery, mewithoutyou, and Mae to name a few (All Christian). But them being a religious group doesn't detract from their musical talents and catchy beats.

Showbread is a rare breed, in that they mix different styles of singing and music. They are fronted by 2 vocalists, Josh Dies and Ivory Mobely. They trade off Yelling, singing and screaming. (Ivory does the screaming and yelling... He's black... SO COOL!) This accompanied by the very rare keytar player in post- music, Josh Giddens!

Showbread is certainly a dynamic band on stage. One of the most energetic bands you will ever see, that's a given! They are matching in every way. They wear the same color clothes, and have the same color guitars. Their outfits have changed since the new album. During the tour for "No Sir, Nihilism is not Practical" they wore red and black. But they have changed their color scheme from Red and Black to Green and Black for the album "Age of Reptiles."

I have no direct download for you because I can't seem to find one. But their purevolume site has 2 downloads from "No Sir" Dead By Dawn and Mouth Like a Magazine are both excellent songs. They have added some songs from their new cd that you can listen to. I highly suggest Oh! Emetophobia!

Showbread is Currently on tour with He is Legend, The Fall of Troy, and Classic Case. The Black Unicorn tour is a MUST SEE! I was fortunate enough to go to a show earlier this year with Corey.

Showbread- Oh..

Signing off for now... Andrew

No Knife

The computer is back to life so here is the next in my series..

I can't find another mp3 for the reincarnation of Atombombpocketknife, Thumbnail, but just to let you know, the guys ditched Thumbnail and reformed the ABPK.

I have been unhealthily obsessed with this band since I first started listeing to them about half a year ago. Their name: No Knife from San Diego. Im pretty sure they're broken up after their latest albulm "Riot for Romance". Personally this is a shame, but it just means I have the check out the bands that have spawned from this creative giant. They are moonlife, get your death on, pinback, and The Jade Shader. I haven't heard any of this stuff yet, but I think The Jade Shader should be good because it includes another pretty good band , boilermaker.

Mitch Wilson - vocals/ guitars

Ryan Ferguson - vocals/ guitars

Brian Desjean - bass

Chris Prescott - drums

No Knife- Academy Flight Song

No Knife is 10 years old. These indie rockers have toured US, Canada, and were adored in Japan. Their first CD was released in 94, and is my favorite, it's called "Drunk on the Moon." Following this influencial CD was "Hitman dreams" and "Fire in the City of Automatons".

Then there was nothing. For 3 years. They had amasses quite a large following and they did nothing.

Then came "Riot for Romance" and it is the antidote for todays completely cookie cutter conformist rock scene.

Here is "Academy Flight Song" off of Fire in the City of Automatons CD. This song is my favorite off the album.

More No Knife tracks ahead on Nekst Song.

Corey J.
