Web browsers that still work in Windows 7 (in 2024) and whether they're updated anymore

2024-09-16T22:36:00.003+00:00

As the title says, this is a list of Web browsers that still work in Windows 7 (in 2024) and whether they're updated anymore. For example, you can still use Internet Explorer on Windows 7... but should you?

We'll start with the built-in / Microsoft and "Standard" / main brand browsers:

Internet Explorer v11 - Dated 2013 - No longer updated - Do NOT use!
Microsoft Edge version 109.0 (Dated 2024) - Warning message: "Edge is no longer supported on this version of Windows, upgrade to Windows 10 or later..." (Version on Win10 machine is 128.0, Sep24) - out of date.
Chrome browser, v109.0 - out of date, latest version is v128 (on Win10, Sep24) - therefore out of date (but works pretty well).
Mozilla FireFox** (v115.0.3 last version for Win7/8/8.1) - you'll need the offline installer to install this otherwise it will try installing a newer version and say your OS isn't supported - ?out of date? / once installed, will update / auto-update using the "ESR" / "Extended Support Release" enhancements! Available from MajorGeeks (54MB)
Opera Browser (aka Opera One - latest version is v112 on Win10) - select 32-bit offline download, download from majorgeeks.com/mg/get/opera,1.html - DOES NOT WORK :(
Opera GX (gaming?) - skip this one if your PC is slow (not tested, v95 is apparently the last one)

If you can get the off-line installer for FireFox v115.0.3 this could be a great option for many people, as this should be familiar to lots of people, and will auto-update. **For MOST people, FireFox is going to be one of the best bets, after it's been updated (at time of writing, ESR updates to 115.15.0, September 2024).

Moving onto the browsers that are from other people:

Supermium (v126 latest at time of writing) - 104MB (32bit) / 115 MB (64bit) - search github for the latest release for Windows. UP TO DATE (based on Chrome).
Midori v0.5.11 - (from 2023) - installed then crashes (need to try newer version).
K-Meleon / Portable - (35MB, v76.5.5 Sep 2024) - has adblock plug-in available, very light, gives a different view of the internet (some might call it old-school).
Pale Moon - (30MB, v33 Sept 2024) - Up to date, and seems to work well.

All browsers tested on a Compaq Presario CQ56, with a "Celeron 900" (single core, 2.2ghz cpu), running Windows 7 (32-bit), with 4GB RAM (3.25GB usable), and a 320GB HDD.

Running one browser at a time, performance from most browsers (that worked) seemed acceptable, even when playing video from YouTube, however, it was when opening multiple browsers that slowdown was the biggest problem.

What happened to all the blogs? Where have they gone?

2024-07-24T09:47:00.002+00:00

Amazingly, this blog still exists. Thanks to blogspot. It just keeps going, hosting this website, for free. In comparison all the personal websites of yesterday are gone, due to the annoying annual domain name fees, and hosting costs, if you're hosting your own site (and not just redirecting to blogspot).

It harks back to a simpler time, when everyone wanted a website, to share photos, share information (for free), and just made websites for fun. Now, it's much simpler and easier to post your opinion on Facebook, or Twitter/X (or not), and for those who're happy creating video, Youtube is the new blog. No one ever says "I'm a blogger" anymore, but they do say things like "I'm a youtuber" or "I'm a creator".

Well, if you're still interested in blogs, and want to write about tech or anything related, then feel free to get in touch with your details, and we can link to you.

Completely free disk cloning software that actually works

2022-11-16T08:48:00.005+00:00

You know the drill, you've just replaced an old HDD with an SSD drive (or M.2 etc), and for some reason you want to clone the existing drive and keep everything the same. Even though you know a fresh install of Windows is a much better idea.

Anyway, if you're lucky the new SSD drive will come with some cloning software. However, a lot of the time it won't. So you download some free cloning software (like AOMEI Backupper) only to find that to clone the drive fully you have to pay...

Fear not, there is completely free software out there (for personal use), from Macrium Reflect

Check it out here: https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree (scroll to home/free)

It totally works, and is totally free, you just need to give them your email address, and then they send you a download link.

Free DVD writing software that actually works...

2014-10-21T07:08:00.001+00:00

So, if you want to convert mp4 or other video files into a DVD, for free, without any kind of watermark on the DVD, then you should definitely use FreeMake Video Converter. It actually works, and you can do a custom install so that you don't have to install any rubbish additional software.

Who bothers with CDs these days?

2012-03-10T17:23:00.000+00:00

If you have a netbook or a small laptop or "ultrabook" then most likely it wont have an optical drive... then if you need to reinstall Windows (or whatever) then the smart way to do it is to use a USB pen drive. To do this use:

WinToFlash to transfer your install CD/DVD to your USB pendrive (it also makes it bootable).
PLUS Virtual CloneDrive (Freeware) IF you have the Windows/Install CD/DVD stored as an ISO or IMG on your PC.

And before you know it... Bob's your uncle. Fanny's your aunt. And you're one confused but happy little camper.

Acid Relief - Free CD*

2011-09-10T16:17:00.003+00:00

* Feel free to donate money for charity.

But you don't have to if you don't want to, but I'd highly recommend it if you enjoy the music. It's a full on Acid House, Techno, Electric phat beat / bass (bit like puffboy) album with 16 tracks, 1 hour 30 minutes, and SO worth the download, even if you have to spend all weekend downloading it over 3G on your mobile phone. (Like I did!)

Link here: http://balkanvinyl.bandcamp.com/album/acid-relief?autoplay=true

Also blogger have a new dashboard, and posting style, very minimalist, with stats and things, much more like a copy of wordpress but slightly more basic looking. (if you're interested). Oh and it looks like me posting this has applied a different template to the blog. (so there).

MP3 Tools: Want to (semi) automatically find album art for all your mp3s?

2010-10-15T19:35:00.002+00:00

Then why not try:

"Album Cover Art Downloader" (unrealvoodoo)

This one seems the most automatic, and will just get on with it when you "select all" and then click "download missing..." but has less sources (walmart, best buy, yahoo, but not amazon), and seems slower.

"Album Art Downloader" (sourceforge.net)

This one likes you to select and double click the image you want to be your album art, and seems quicker (but also depends on you responding to the prompts) and possibly more up to date than the top program, it also has more sources for album art including google images. You can also click "auto download and select artwork" which speeds up the process. It also lets you know how many albums you have without artwork, and then you can select them, and find artwork for them. Good stuff.

MP3TAG - universal tag editor (https://www.mp3tag.de/en/)

Batch tag editing, includes online database lookups, and the ability to rename files based on the tag information, as well as adding album covers. It can also create playlists if you want.

2010-10-02T23:39:00.002+00:00

I've been tidying up on line and deleted a couple of blogs, being a blogger seams so retro now? (Where's the spell check button?) But more to the point who reads blogs these days any way?

I was amused to see that Dad is still doing seti, and is well over half way to catching me up.

I know this blog is kind of dead...

But this is flipping awesome. ignore the fact that they call it a "podcast" when in fact it's a Rave mix by Moby stored as an mp3... because it's quite frankly awesome and should be downloaded anyway. (via boingboing)

This is a test of the Nokia N97 as a blogging device

2010-02-09T11:11:00.003+00:00

Note that Im having to use Opera Mini because the built in web browser is so crap that it crashes every time I try and post something on blogger.

The keyboard is a little poor. Space bar is in the wrong place. The keyboard works a little better and quicker when you use it liked a crackberry and type with your opposable thumbs (holding the phone rather than putting it down on the desk) but the spacing feels a little too wide when compared to a blackberry and the feeling is very ZX81. Where is the Psion 5 keyboard when you need it?

The screen seems much more responsive than the Sony Satio and is usable with just your fingers.

I guess its not too bad - perhaps quicker and more usable than having to use a normal phone - but nothing yet has convinced me that any phone is a suitable (perfect) blogging tool. The only thing they are really good at is photo blogging and posting short twitter style updates.

Dave Pearce - The Dance Years - 1989

2009-08-01T12:27:00.004+00:00

1989 - available from Asda or Amazon UK for £5. Worth it simply for Young MC - Know How (CD1, Track 12) - he's got no hat.

Dave Pearce has done all the other years it seems, although I'm not sure which ones are any good, it might be good to go backward (to 1988) rather than forwards, for classics such as Humanoid, Bomb the Bass, etc. If you were keen on this music in the early 90s then it's a great trip down memory lane and could be a give you a great feeling of nostalgia. Anyone with a better memory of that time fancy looking over the track listings and giving their thoughts?
