Free Girls Showcase Highlights Northeast Ohio Talent as I.C.Change Continues to Expand Its Mission

On Saturday, August 1, 2026, the I.C.Change Basketball Showcase continued its mission of creating opportunities for young student-athletes—this time by giving the young ladies of Northeast Ohio their own day to shine.

I.C.Change Basketball Showcase founder Ian Cunningham teamed up with former Villa Angela-St. Joseph standout, professional basketball player, and current local skills trainer and player-development specialist Rollie Smith to provide a completely free girls basketball showcase at The Sports Plant in Euclid, Ohio.

The event featured 18 young ladies from throughout Northeast Ohio, all coming together for one purpose: an opportunity to compete, develop, gain exposure, and showcase their abilities in front of college coaches.

Registration began at 11:00 a.m., with the showcase officially getting underway at noon. Cunningham and Smith opened the event with a brief introduction, setting the tone and reminding the athletes that the day was about much more than simply winning basketball games.

It was about effort, growth, exposure, confidence, education, and making the most of an opportunity.

With college coaches representing Junior College, USCAA, and NCAA Division III programs in attendance, the young ladies began the day with a warmup and skills-training session led by Smith before transitioning into competitive full-court games.

The event also included a College Coaches Q&A session, giving the athletes an opportunity to hear directly from coaches about recruiting, academics, expectations, and what programs look for in prospective student-athletes.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was Ms. Queen of the Court, where players competed individually and had another opportunity to demonstrate their competitiveness, confidence, and basketball ability.

The showcase was also supported by a dedicated athletic training staff led by Mr. Fahey of Cuyahoga Valley Career Center (CVCC), along with Reina Cunningham, daughter of founder Ian Cunningham. Their presence helped ensure that player health and safety remained a priority throughout the event.

Recognizing the Girls Showcase Standouts

Every athlete in the gym competed hard, and the college coaches in attendance took notice.

The effort, competitiveness, and overall talent made selecting the award recipients extremely difficult. Every young lady who stepped on the floor gave her best effort and represented herself, her family, and her school with pride.

This year’s Girls Showcase award winners included:

Ms. MVP
Julia Scales — Hawken High School, Class of 2027

Ms. Queen of the Court
Tatianna Williams — Cuyahoga CC, Class of 2027

Ms. Defensive Stopper
Bella Guidugli — Lutheran East High School, Class of 2028

Top 6 Showcase Awards

Kasey Bolyard— Mogadore High School, 2027

Rosalynda Jordan— Strongsville High School, 2028

Avery Carr— UC, 2029

Isabel Stocker— Saint John High School, 2029

Jayleena Bauzo— John Marshall High School, 2026

Brandi Page— Gilmour Academy, 2028

Selected participants received trophies and medals recognizing their performances throughout the showcase.

But perhaps an even greater opportunity was available beyond the awards.

A $1,000 scholarship opportunity was made available for a participating young lady who received an offer from one of the college coaches in attendance. If the student-athlete chose to pursue that opportunity, she would be eligible to submit an essay explaining how the scholarship would help her and why she should be selected for the award.

That opportunity represents exactly what I.C.Change was built around—using basketball as a platform to help create opportunities that can impact a young person’s future both athletically and academically.

Bigger Than Basketball

Northeast Ohio continues to prove that it has some of the most versatile and talented student-athletes in the state.

One college coach in attendance summed up the event by telling Cunningham:

“The I.C.Change Showcase is always a premier event. I can’t believe more people in the area don’t know about it!”

For Cunningham, comments like that reinforce why the showcase continues to exist and why keeping the event free remains so important.

The journey began in 2019, when a free boys basketball showcase was created because Cunningham saw an opportunity to help student-athletes throughout Northeast Ohio receive exposure without families having to worry about another registration fee.

The goal was simple:

Give back. Create opportunities. Help young people. Make a difference.

Years later, that mission continues to grow.

At the 2026 Boys I.C.Change Basketball Showcase, 61 young men competed in front of double-digit college coaches, once again giving under-the-radar student-athletes an opportunity to perform in front of coaches who could potentially help change the direction of their basketball and academic futures.

The boys were also given an opportunity that extended beyond basketball.

Scholarship awards were made available to participants who received an offer from a college or university coach attending the showcase. If a student-athlete received an offer, chose to pursue that opportunity, and planned to attend that institution, he could submit an essay explaining why he should be considered for a scholarship award.

The purpose was to make the showcase about more than simply being seen for one day.

I.C.Change wanted to help create opportunities that could assist a student-athlete in taking the next step both academically and athletically.

For Cunningham, that is what the showcase is truly about—creating opportunities that can extend beyond the basketball court and potentially have a lasting impact on a young person’s future.

2026 Boys Showcase Award Winners

Alumni Game MVP

Calvin Marshall – Henry Ford CC

MVP
Judah Prince-Noel — Lincoln Prep, Canada, 2026

Audra Jackson Mr. Hustle Award
Joshniel Nieves — John Marshall High School, 2026

Kyle Jackson Playmaker Award
Jadan Gill — Valley Forge High School, 2027

Eikenberry Defensive Stopper Award
Kellen Balog — Western Reserve High School, 2028

Top Showcase Award Recipients

Darius Chappell— Garrett Morgan, 2027

Dominic Bell— Run the Show Prep, 2025

Payton Spencer-Jackson— Akron Firestone, 2027

Grant Gosa— VASJ, 2027

Avery Atkins— Lorain CC, 2026

Jordan Campbell— Garfield Heights, 2027

Emmanuel Steele— Canada, 2026

Vincent Mauro— Columbus Pickerington, 2025

Jayveon Roe— Lorain CC, 2027

Blake Mullaly— Rootstown, 2027

Caden Stombaugh— Abeka Homeschool, 2028

Dereon Barber— Richmond Heights, 2028

The talent level made selecting the top performers incredibly difficult.

After reviewing film from the showcase, it became even more apparent just how many deserving players participated. Narrowing the group down to only a select number of award recipients was one of the hardest parts of the event.

That is a true testament to the level of talent that continues to attend the I.C.Change Basketball Showcase year after year.

Not everyone will leave with a trophy.

Not everyone will receive an offer that day.

But every athlete is given a legitimate opportunity to compete, be evaluated, build relationships, and be seen.

Sometimes, one opportunity can change everything.

The Next Chapter: Boys & Girls Together in 2027

“This is just the beginning,” Cunningham said.

The vision is already expanding.

On Saturday, June 5, 2027, the I.C.Change Basketball Showcase plans to bring the boys and girls events together for the first time.

The premium, invitation-only event will feature:

32 young men.
32 young women.
64 selected student-athletes.
Men’s and women’s college coaches.
One event. One mission.

The combined showcase is being designed to give both men’s and women’s college basketball coaches an opportunity to travel together and recruit talented student-athletes during the same event.

The goal is to create an atmosphere where coaches at different levels can evaluate players, connect with families, build recruiting relationships, and discover talented student-athletes who may otherwise go overlooked.

Former NBA point guard Smush Parker is also expected to return to support the showcase and continue giving back to the next generation of young athletes.

What started as a free basketball showcase for boys in Northeast Ohio in 2019 continues to evolve into something much larger.

Adding a girls showcase in 2026 was another important step.

Combining both showcases in 2027 represents the next one.

But through all of the growth, one thing will remain the same:

The mission.

It is about basketball—but it has never been only about basketball.

It is about opening doors.

It is about giving young people a platform.

It is about connecting student-athletes with college coaches.

It is about scholarships and education.

It is about mentorship, relationships, exposure, and opportunity.

Most importantly, it is about showing young people that there are individuals in their own community who are willing to invest their time, resources, and energy into helping them succeed.

The I.C.Change Basketball Showcase will continue striving to provide opportunities for young men and women who simply need someone willing to give them a chance.

From 61 boys competing in June, to 18 young ladies receiving their own showcase in August, to a planned 64-player combined boys and girls event in 2027, the vision continues to grow.

And if the first eight years are any indication, the best may still be ahead.

Exposure. Competition. Opportunity.

I.C.Change Basketball Showcase — Bigger Than Sports.

Cleveland used the final hours before the Aug. 3, 2026 MLB trade deadline to address power, rotation depth, and matchup flexibility.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians did not treat the 2026 MLB trade deadline like a team content to merely hang around the playoff race. On Aug. 3, with the American League Central and Wild Card pictures still within reach, Cleveland made a series of aggressive moves that signaled a clear intent: the front office believes this roster is close enough to justify adding immediate help.

The headline additions were first baseman and designated hitter Nathaniel Lowe from the Cincinnati Reds, left-handed starter Foster Griffin from the Washington Nationals and right-handed outfielder Jo Adell from the Los Angeles Angels. Together, the moves gave Cleveland a more flexible lineup, a sturdier rotation, and a stronger mix of platoon options for manager Stephen Vogt down the stretch.

Deadline haul: three needs, three answers

The busiest portion of Cleveland’s deadline came in the final hours. The Guardians acquired Lowe from Cincinnati for pitching prospect Alejandro Rivera, adding a left-handed bat who entered the move batting .266 with 12 home runs, 17 doubles, 37 RBI and an .820 OPS in 83 games. For a team that had searched for steadier production at first base and designated hitter, Lowe immediately profiles as a veteran run producer who can lengthen the lineup.

Cleveland also landed Griffin, a 31-year-old left-hander enjoying a breakout season with Washington. Griffin was an All-Star in 2026 and had posted a 3.06 ERA and 1.075 WHIP across 22 starts, giving the Guardians another dependable starter capable of working deep into games. The price was significant: left-handers Will Dion and Josh Hartle, right-hander Kendeglys Virguez and outfielder Nick Mitchell went to the Nationals.

Earlier in the day, the Guardians added Adell from the Angels, surrendering catching prospect Jacob Cozart. Adell brings right-handed power and outfield depth, two traits Cleveland needed as it tried to balance a lineup that had leaned heavily on matchup management and timely pitching.

Why the moves fit Cleveland

Individually, none of the trades looked like a reckless blockbuster. Collectively, they formed one of the more purposeful deadline plans in the league. Lowe gives the Guardians a more proven left-handed bat for the middle of the order. Adell gives them a right-handed outfield option with power against left-handed pitching. Griffin gives them another veteran starter who can absorb innings and reduce pressure on the bullpen.

That last point may be especially important. Cleveland’s identity has long been built around pitching development, defense, and run prevention. Adding Griffin allows the Guardians to protect their relief corps in August and September when tight division races often become bullpen survival contests. If Griffin continues to throw strikes and keep the ball on the ground, he should benefit from Cleveland’s infield defense and pitching infrastructure.

The offensive additions are more about raising the floor than changing the franchise’s identity. Lowe and Adell give Vogt more ways to build a lineup based on the opposing starter. Against right-handers, Lowe can provide left-handed thump and on-base ability. Against left-handers, Adell can bring a power threat to the outfield mix. That may not make Cleveland an offensive juggernaut, but it should make the lineup less predictable and harder to navigate.

Cost and risk

The Guardians did pay real prospect capital. Giving up four players for Griffin, a veteran starter acquired for a pennant push, is not a small bet. Moving Cozart and Rivera also trims from the organization’s future depth. But Cleveland’s front office appeared to make a calculated decision: with the club hovering around the postseason picture and within striking distance in the division, marginal upgrades could be the difference between playing in October and watching from home.

There is still risk. Lowe must prove his rebound at the plate will carry into a new league environment. Adell’s swing-and-miss concerns remain part of his profile. Griffin’s breakout has to hold up under meaningful September innings. But deadline moves are rarely about certainty. They are about identifying weaknesses and giving a contender more ways to win.

Bottom line

By the time the deadline passed, the Guardians had made their message clear. They were not selling. They were not standing still. They were buying selectively, targeting players who fit specific roster gaps without completely abandoning the organization’s long-term discipline.

If Cleveland reaches the postseason, Aug. 3 may be remembered as the day the front office gave the roster the support it needed. If the Guardians fall short, the trades will still show that the club recognized the moment and acted. Either way, Cleveland’s deadline was not quiet, cautious, or passive. It was a contender’s deadline and now the Guardians have two months to prove it was the right one.

Through July 28, Cleveland’s postseason hopes remain alive but the offense is giving the pitching staff almost no margin for error.

For most of 2026, the Cleveland Guardians have looked like a team trying to win games with one arm tied behind its back. The pitching has kept them relevant, the bullpen has saved tight leads, and the defense has done enough to keep games close. But the offense has been so quiet recently that every inning feels like a countdown to see whether Cleveland can scratch across even one run.

Through July 28, the Guardians sat around the middle of the playoff picture at 54-53 or 55-53 depending on the latest game log update, but the run prevention has been doing almost all of the heavy lifting. Cleveland had scored only 420 to 426 runs in roughly 107 to 109 games, while allowing 438 runs. That negative run differential tells the story: this is a club surviving, not surging.

Team Stats Show a Bottom-Tier Offense

The Guardians’ overall batting line through Tuesday was the kind of profile that explains the frustration. StatMuse listed Cleveland at 107 games with a .230 batting average, .309 on-base percentage and .371 slugging percentage, with 104 home runs, 402 RBI, 381 walks, 895 strikeouts and 104 stolen bases. Fox Sports, using a 109-game table, had the Guardians at .230/.309/.368 with a .677 OPS, ranking 28th in MLB in batting average and near the bottom of the league in most major offensive categories.

The issue is not just a lack of power. Cleveland has speed, ranking near the top of the league in stolen bases, and it still draws walks at a useful rate. But the Guardians have not paired that with enough hits or slugging to create steady innings. Too often, runners are stranded, rallies die after one hard-hit ball, and the team asks its pitchers to make a 2-1 game hold up for nine innings.

The Individual Numbers Are a Mixed Bag

Chase DeLauter has been the best story in the lineup though he missed time with injury. Through July 28, he was hitting .282 with a .352 OBP, .447 slugging percentage, 11 home runs and 50 RBI. That is legitimate middle-of-the-order production.

Brayan Rocchio has also helped stabilize things, posting a .268 average, .328 OBP, nine home runs, 49 RBI and 15 steals. Steven Kwan, meanwhile, has started to wake up after a slow first half. His overall line sat at .248/.351/.308 with only one homer and 18 RBI, but his July surge is one of the few recent reasons for optimism.

Another possible factor is the way the lineup has been mixed and matched. Platooning can create better matchups on paper, but when players are constantly moving in and out of the order, it can also make it harder for hitters to settle into a rhythm. For a young lineup already searching for confidence, inconsistent playing time may be making the offensive drought worse by forcing too many players to produce without regular at-bats.

That is why Cleveland’s offense has felt nonexistent recently. The Guardians have a few useful pieces, but not enough length.

Vogt Keeps Selling the Bigger Picture

While the numbers make Cleveland’s offensive issues difficult to ignore, manager Stephen Vogt has continued to frame the Guardians as a team that is playing strong overall baseball. After an early-season stretch against difficult opponents, Vogt said, “I know probably not many people had that record on paper for us. So, I think, you know, we’re just proving to ourselves again: We are good, and we know that.” It was the kind of quote that captured his broader approach: keep the clubhouse focused on belief, competitiveness, and daily progress rather than letting outside criticism define the season.

That optimism has shown up even when the offense has been inconsistent. In May, after the Guardians flashed power in a win over Cincinnati, Vogt pointed to the roster’s age curve as a reason to believe the bats could still grow. “I think we’re young. A lot of people don’t get into their power until 25 to 28, and we’re starting to get into those age ranges for a lot of our guys,” Vogt said. “As you get older, you learn when to take shots. You learn how to attack certain pitches.”

More recently, though, Vogt has not completely denied the problem. After Cleveland went 0-for-17 with runners in scoring position in a 3-1 extra-inning loss to Minnesota, he called it “a frustrating day for us offensively.” That admission matters because it undercuts the idea that the manager is blind to the issue. Still, his public tone has largely remained steady and positive, emphasizing that the Guardians are competing, pitching well, and giving themselves chances even when the lineup fails to finish innings.

That leaves Cleveland in an uncomfortable place. Vogt’s message may be exactly what a young team needs internally, but the standings and stat sheet are less forgiving. The Guardians can say they are playing good baseball in many phases, and they often are, but as long as the offense remains near the bottom of the league, every optimistic quote comes with an obvious question attached: when will the bats actually back it up?

The Bottom Line

Cleveland does not need to become the Dodgers overnight. It does not need a lineup full of stars. But it does need more than what it has shown recently. A team hitting around .230 with a sub-.680 OPS cannot expect a pitching staff to carry it through August, September and October on vibes and close-game execution alone.

The Guardians are still alive because their arms have given them a chance, and Vogt’s belief in the group is part of what keeps the clubhouse steady. But the offense has become the season’s defining problem. If the bats wake up, his confidence could look like leadership that helped a young team stay afloat. If they do not, Cleveland may look back on 2026 as the year its manager kept preaching belief while the lineup never gave him enough runs to justify it.

It’s not often that you come across a football player that exudes confidence in a way that isn’t arrogant or cocky. But when you listen to Browns second year quarterback Shedeur Sanders speak about life on and off the field of play you hear a 24 year old that understands life better than most. Even this old sports writer at the ripe young age of 56 has learned a thing or two from listening to Sanders talk about life in general.

Recently, Sanders sat down and did an Apple Podcast with host Nadeska Alexis as they talked about Sander’s life and how he’s managing things on and off the football field. Sanders said a lot of things in the interview and I would encourage you to go listen to it yourself.

But I walked away from it impressed again with this kid’s approach in life and it’s why I believe he can be the Browns future at the quarterback spot.

I could be wrong and that wouldn’t be a shock to anyone who knows me, but I believe in Sander’s belief in himself and that most times is the difference in being successful or not in football or anything you do in life.

While listening to the interview, Sanders admitted to his doubts and struggles but also learning about his strengths at the same time and using those skills moving forward.

He talked about his love for music and producing songs to be a part of his own therapy in life. He discussed the connection between life and the game of football and how having things in order in your life should be in line with how you play the game on the field.

There will always be the doubters when it comes to discussing Sanders and his future with Cleveland. He’s only going into his second season and I think he’s built mentally to prove those doubters wrong. I think by the end of this season the Browns will have their “franchise quarterback”.

You can never accurately predict the future but there’s a lot more signs that suggest that Sanders has what it takes to succeed in life and on the field and that’s a huge plus for him and the fans that cheer him on.

2nd and Goal: Training Camp starts this week!

The Browns rookies report on July 23rd and the veterans will report on July 28th. The practices will be open to the public starting on July 31st and go through August 12th.

Cleveland will go on the road August 15th for their first preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

They’ll return home the following week having joint practices with the Buffalo Bills and conclude with a preseason game on August 22nd at Huntington Stadium. They’ll follow that up with another preseason game against the New. England Patriots on August 27th.

3rd and Goal: Can the Browns defense shine without Myles Garrett?

The answer is absolutely yes! Yes, Myles Garrett had a record 23 sacks last season but the Browns traded him away this offseason. The Browns defenses in the past have been good but not always good either even with Garrett in the lineup.

A lot is trying to be made with Garrett’s departure and how it will negatively affect the future of the Browns. But times change and it was time for Garrett to move on after nine seasons in Cleveland.

The Browns have a very talented young defense that was ranked fourth overall last season. Will they rank again at the top? Maybe not, but they can certainly be one of the best even without Garrett. The newly traded for defensive edge Jarrett Verse, linebacker Carson Schwesinger and defensive lineman Mason Graham, along with corners like Denzel Ward and safety Grant Delpit will all continue to put pressure on opposing offenses this season.

4th and Goal: Don’t pay attention to all these preseason rankings about the Browns

If you are a Browns fan you’ve seen and heard enough this offseason about how bad your team is going to be. You really just have to ignore it all. But that can be a challenge when some analysts say that Cleveland will be lucky to win three games this season or they’re guaranteed a loss in Week 1.

No one knows anything outside of the players and coaches that take the field for the Browns. They are the ones that will control the wins and losses.

The Browns have a new head coach in Todd Monken who at the young age of 61 gets his first chance at being a head coach in the NFL. I think he will get his team to buy into the challenges early in the year.

I also think with any very young team, if those wins don’t come early then the focus of the players to their coach will become more difficult. With anything, change is hard and that’s where the team is right now.

I do think they’re push of the youth movement will pay off down the line but maybe not this season. I still believe this team can contend every Sunday and come away with an eight or nine win season.

What seemed like a benign transaction has garnered this organization three World Series dates and quite a few playoff runs. Let’s break this down!

Officially this was not the trade that created the 90’s Indians was we knew them. Hank Peters, then GM, traded for Carolos Baerga and Sandy Alomar, Jr. first. But, this was new GM John Hart’s first trade. And with the other moves and philosophy of handing out longer term contracts to the young studs, this set a stage for success. But who would have thought it would go to the 2020’s!

1997 Hello Marquis and Dave

In the spring of 1997, Hart traded with Atlanta for Marquis Grissom and David Justice, giving Kenny a new home along with Alan Embree. But that wasn’t the end of the Kenny saga. Yes, Cleveland made and should have won the World Series. And we brought Kenny back in 1998! But David Justice was the next domino to fall er…be traded.

20 Mar 1999: Outfielder David Justice #23 of the Cleveland Indians swings at the ball during the Spring Training game against the New York Yankees at the Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida. The Yankees defeated the Indians 8-7.

2000 Justice for Jake!

In 2000 we sent Justice to the Bronx Bombers for rookie Jake Westbrook, Ricky Ledee and Zach Day. It was the first time missing playoffs since 1993, but Jake was a nine year mainstay on the club whether it be bullpen or starter. Manny Acta, in his first horrendous year as the skipper in 2010, lead the club to a terrible first part of the season. And Mark Shapiro, realizing this wasn’t going to be an eventful 2010, opened the club up for trades! The biggest was on July 31, 2010. And a crazy three team trade commenced bringing to Cleveland…Corey Kluber.

2010 Welcome, Klubot!

So let’s try to make sense of this trade. Cleveland sent Jake to St. Louis while the Cardinals dispatched Ryan Ludwick to the Padres. In turn, the San Diego shipped Nick Greenwood to Missouri and Corey to Northern Ohio!

Corey gave so much to the organization. In many ways we could say he was the MVP for almost ten years. He was professional, robotic, and fearless. His stretch from 2014 – 2018 is as good as Kershaw, Scherzer, Verlander and Sale. He pitched the most innings over that span and was second in bWAR to Scherzer. His performance in the 2016 playoff run is often forgotten. He won games 1 and 4 in the World Series and started game 7 on short rest. He grabbed two Cy Youngs in that stretch and was our ACE!

But like all good things, his reign of dominance came to an end and we traded him to Texas in exchange for DeLino DeShields and Clase!

Yes, him!

Kenny Lofton’s trade

So a trade in 1991 for Kenny Lofton had life until Clase was basically out of baseball for good. That’s 1991 to 2025. Thirty-four years!

To review: Kenny for Justice. Justice for Jake. Jake for Kluber. Kluber for Clase. (Man I hate typing that man’s name!)

From a winning standpoint, the trade for Kenny in ’91 gave us a ‘95 World Series, a ‘97 World Series, a 2016 World Series and numerous playoff runs since Covid. I realize there were more important signings and such, but this is about a small deal on December 10th, 1991. (NOTE: On December 9th we selected Pete Rose Jr. in the Rule 5 draft off the White Sox!)

Trades can build a small market club into a dominant force for a few years. But swing and miss and you have five years of hell to pay. But the Lofton trade has paid huge dividends for the ballclub and fans. For over thirty years!

What trade should be made next? And could this profit the Guardians going forward like Lofton’s? What would you like to see, fans?

The Cleveland Guardians reached the All-Star break looking less like a team merely hanging around and more like one built to stay in the American League Central race. At 51-46, Cleveland entered the break tied atop the division, riding a four-game winning streak and fresh off a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins.

For a club that has dealt with injuries, inconsistency at the plate and the pressure of leaning on young talent, the first half offered a clear message: the Guardians are not simply surviving. They are finding ways to win.

Pitching Sets the Tone

Cleveland’s identity has once again started on the mound. The Guardians’ pitching staff carried a 3.71 ERA into the break, ranking among the better groups in baseball and giving the club a steady foundation even when the offense went quiet. The rotation of Gavin Williams, Tanner Bibee, Parker Messick, Joey Cantillo and Slade Cecconi has helped keep Cleveland in nearly every series, while the bullpen has continued the organization’s tradition of turning power arms into late-inning weapons.

Messick has been one of the biggest stories of the season. The rookie left-hander earned an All-Star selection after establishing himself as one of the Guardians’ most reliable starters, combining strikeout ability with poise beyond his experience level. Behind him, Cade Smith has taken command of the ninth inning, entering the All-Star festivities as one of the league’s most productive closers.

Young Stars Answer the Call

The Guardians will be represented at the 2026 All-Star Game by three first-time selections: Travis Bazzana, Parker Messick and Cade Smith. Bazzana and Messick give Cleveland two rookie All-Stars in the same season, a rare marker of how quickly the club’s next wave has arrived.

Bazzana’s arrival has helped stabilize the top of the lineup. Since his late-April promotion, he has brought on-base ability, speed and energy to a team that needed a spark. Smith, meanwhile, has turned a demanding closer role into a strength, piling up saves while giving manager Stephen Vogt a trusted option to finish tight games.

Finishing The Half the Right Way

The Guardians’ final weekend before the break may have been their most encouraging stretch of the season. Cleveland swept Miami and outscored the Marlins 12-5 in the series, closing the first half with cleaner execution, timely hitting and the kind of complete baseball that can shift the tone of a division race.

Brayan Rocchio and Chase DeLauter supplied needed power in Miami, Joey Cantillo delivered a strong start in the series finale and the bullpen protected leads. For a team that has had to navigate a difficult month without José Ramírez, the sweep offered both relief and validation.

The Road Ahead

The second half will test whether Cleveland can turn a strong position into a postseason berth. The offense still has room to grow, and the trade deadline could determine how aggressively the front office tries to support a roster that has already proven it can contend. The potential return of Ramírez would also deepen the lineup and give the Guardians their emotional centerpiece back for the stretch run.

Still, the Guardians have given themselves exactly what every contender wants at the break: meaningful games ahead, a pitching staff capable of carrying them, young players growing into major roles and momentum that feels earned. If the first half was about proving they belonged in the race, the second half will be about proving they can win it.

Intro

The World Cup has stirred so many emotions for so many fans from the US to Argentina to Norway. But one thing that has occurred is something that we as fans find the most frustrating event in any sport: REPLAY.

VAR

Flo Balogun, the US forward, was assessed a red card on a tackle in a game versus Bosnia when Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was used to check on the tackle that struck the back calf of the defender. Though the FIFA rules do not allow the use of VAR in this instance, it was the main reason for Balogun’s suspension. There have been numerous issues where VAR was or was NOT used this World Cup, causing confusion and frustration.

But not just soccer do we find controversy. This year’s French Open Tennis tournament saw the replay NOT utilized for a call that impacted the second set in a match between Casper Ruud and Joao Fonseca. Fonseca’s forehand sailed long, giving the second key set to Ruud. But the tennis replay, Hawk-Eye, is not utilized at the French Open, the only major tennis tournament that relies on human calls. The chair umpire called the shot good and Fonseca went on to win the match. Television replays with Hawk-Eye clearly showed the ball out.

What is the answer?

So where do we stand as fans of sports? Baseball has tried with the ABS (Automated Ball-Strike System) to keep umpires consistent. The NFL and College Football have tried to assist the referees in this climate of bigger, stronger and faster athletes with calls too. Even those plays where a helmet-to-helmet hit has occurred. Want to anger Browns fans? Bring up the Browns/Chiefs playoff game when replay was NOT used for a clear helmet-to-helmet hit on Rashard Higgins resulting in a touchback for the Chiefs.

Courtesy of Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

But what do we, as fans of our sports, want? How should replay be instigated? What are we expecting replay to solve?

Short history

The origins of instant replay (IR) stem from of all places: Army versus Navy in 1963. Tony Verna, sports director for CBS, introduced the world to action that is replayed to highlight a special moment. Army QB Rollie Stichweh punched in the ball from the one yard line for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Navy, ranked #2 at the time, still managed to win the ballgame, 21-15. But the videotape machine, weighing at roughly a bit more than half a ton, showed the run at full speed. Lindsey Nelson, the TV commentator, quickly noted: “Ladies and gentlemen, Army did NOT score again!”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZ4rZCoMmC0

Go to 47:11 to see the play in question.

Technology

As cameras and the equipment improved, slow-motion replay became a staple in television productions. Increased camera angles and the technical equipment becoming more portable and sophisticated replay technology constantly improved. The NFL in 1986 went all in for replay, but it wasn’t smooth. Glitches and delays caused the NFL to stop the practice in 1991.

Other Leagues History

FIFA

We might as well start off with VAR, since that’s been generating all the fuss recently. VAR was first imagined by the Royal Netherlands Football Association. It was tried at different levels in varying countries. Even a United Soccer League match here in the US saw VAR utilized by the match head ref.

But FIFA, under Seth Blatter, refused ANY use of technology on the games. When corruption charges ended Blatter’s reign, current FIFA boss, Gianni Infantino, saw a slow introduction to the game.

First instituted in the 2018 World Cup, VAR adjudicated 335 plays, 14 of those plays were then overturned. FIFA said the success rate was 99.8%.

MLB

Image taken from REDDIT.

MLB was one of the last sports to implement instant replay. In 2008 only the umpiring crew could initiate a review with limited instances. The current system was rolled out in 2014. But in 1999 a game between Florida and St Louis, Cliff Floyd of the Marlins hit what looked like a 3 run homerun. The field at Pro Player Stadium had scoreboards that were in play, and NL ump Frank Pulli used a tv camera to watch the replay as the ball hit squarely on the scoreboard for a double. Both the NL and AL offices agreed that the ump should not have used the replay for his decision.

NBA

The NBA first started replay after the 2002 debacles. The worst being the Lakers/Kings game 6 of the 2002 NBA playoffs. And just the Western Conference Finals in general. Watch this video.

One could argue this set of calls wasn’t as egregious as the shot that should not have counted. Samari Walker of the Lakers let fly a three point attempt at the end of the half but was clearly released after the clock made zero. The refs counted it. Think they wanted Kobe to get his ring?

Immediately after the playoffs, the NBA instituted replay.

NHL

Hockey has seen instant replay since 1991 and only for disputed goals. But true hockey fans will insist that replay was first instigated in 1955, airing a goal thirty seconds after the fact during a break in action.

What fans want

If we ask fans what they expect from instant replay, it’s probably the following in some order, obviously based on the sport.

“Getting it right!”

Fairness.

Transparency for fans and players.

Evaluation of referees and umpires.

I would suggest that key scoring moments, time issues, fouls, boundary calls and player abuse be all reviewable.

What must be balanced

But it’s also important to make sure of the flow of games. So, IR should also try to minimize the following in no order.

Lengthy disruptions.

Subjectivity in interpretations. (What the heck IS a catch in football anymore?)

Momentum changes.

Level of technology and its cost.

Who makes the calls? In a booth or on the field/pitch?

Where do we go

The leagues are the ultimate determining factor in what happens next. Fans and players/coaches can complain, argue and push for changes. But the owners and commissioners and in the case of the World Cup or other nation competitions the governing bodies of that sport need to see this as a key issue for fairness, consistency, and ultimately a great product.

I do believe that a big part of the frustration on the fans’ part stems from the betting influence and how much leagues are benefitting from sites like FanDuel, DraftKings, bet365, Kalshi and their ilk. The impact of betting and predicting has certainly raised the volume of the anger and frustration.

Conclusion

So where do you stand in this take? What sports are using IR correctly? Which ones incorrectly? What would you like to see implemented to fix the system? Or, is the system broken beyond small repairs? Share with us your ideas.

CLEVELAND, OH – The Cleveland Guardians will send three players to the Major League All-Star Game following tonight’s announcement by Major League Baseball. Cade Smith, Parker Messick and Travis Bazzana earned first-time berths following outstanding first-halves to date. Messick and Bazzana become the fourth and fifth Cleveland rookies, respectively, named to an All-Star team in franchise history, first since Sandy Alomar Jr. in 1990.

Smith, 27, has posted a 2-1 record with a 2.97 ERA and a Major League-leading 26 saves in 29 opportunities (90%) in 37 appearances to date (39.1IP, 36H, 13ER, 10BB, 57SO). He has converted 23 of his last 24 save chances (96%) dating back to April 16, recording 21-consecutive conversions from April 16-June 18 on his way to AL Reliever of the Month honors for May (1.32 ERA, 2ER/13.2IP). May saw him become one of four pitchers in MLB history to have 13+ saves and 25+ strikeouts in a calendar month and the first Guardians pitcher in club history to record 13-straight saves in a calendar month.

In addition to leading the Majors in saves, he ranks third among American League relievers in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.7/1), fourth in strikeouts and fifth in strikeouts per 9.0 IP (13.04). The Guardians are 34-3 over Cade’s appearances, recently recording at least one strikeout in a career-high 23 straight appearances, Apr. 29-June 28.

Messick, 25, has gone 7-5 with a 2.85 ERA (34R/32ER, 101.0IP) in 17 games/starts entering tonight’s start against the White Sox (106 SO, 29BB). The Florida State product currently ranks in the top-5 among qualified MLB rookies in ERA (2nd), strikeouts (2nd), wins (T2nd) and WHIP (3rd, 1.06), while also ranking among AL pitchers in ERA (5th), average against (7th, .214), innings (8th), WHIP (8th) and strikeouts (10th).

In just 24 career games/starts, the lefty has gone 10-6 with a 2.82 ERA (46R/44ER, 140.2IP), the lowest ERA by a Cleveland pitcher in their first 24 games (min. 100IP) since Dennis Eckersleyin 1975 (2.33ERA, 24G/14GS). Messick becomes just the third Guardians pitcher to make an All-Star game as a rookie, joining Dick Stigman in 1960 and Herb Score in 1955.

Bazzana, 23, is the fourth Australian native to receive an All-Star selection, following Liam Hendriks (2019, 2021 & 2022), Grant Balfour (2013) and C/OF/1B David Nilsson (1999). After a solid start to his 2026 season at Triple-A Columbus (.287/.422/.511/.933), the Sydney, Australia native has batted .255 (54-for-212) with 12 doubles, 1 triple, 7 homers, 27 RBI and 12 steals in 57 games. Since his debut on April 28, he leads AL second basemen in RBI (27) and walks (29), while ranking in the top-3 in OPS (.767, 2nd), home runs (7, 3rd) and hits (54, T3rd). Over that same stretch, Bazzana has led the Guardians in hits, runs (27), home runs, RBI and on-base percentage (.347). He is just the second rookie position player in club history to receive an All-Star nod, joining Sandy Alomar Jr. in 1990.

Cleveland has now had multiple AL All-Stars, dating back to 2016. Only New York-AL (1973) and Los Angeles-NL (1989) have enjoyed longer active streaks with multiple All-Stars.

MLB All-Star Week includes the MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard (July 14th); Gatorade All-Star Workout Day featuring the T-Mobile Home Run Derby (July 13th); All-Star Sunday featuring the All-Star Futures Game and MLBx: All-Star 3-on-3 (July 12th); the MLB Draft presented by Nippon Express (July 11th-12th); the HBCU Swingman Classic (July 10th); and Capital One All-Star Village (July 11th-14th). The 96th Midsummer Classic will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and TVA Sports; and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries. FOX Deportes will provide Spanish language coverage in the United States. MLB Network and MLB.com will also provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage.

For Cleveland basketball fans, LeBron James leaving the Los Angeles Lakers does not feel like just another free-agent headline. It feels like a door cracking open. After eight seasons in purple and gold, James informed the Lakers that he plans to play elsewhere in 2026-27.

Thus, extending his career into a record 24th NBA season. At 41, he is still chasing meaningful basketball, still chasing one more chance to compete. All while still carrying a story that has always seemed to circle back to Northeast Ohio.

That is why the Cleveland Cavaliers make more sense than any other destination if this truly is LeBron’s final act. Golden State may offer glamour, a chance to play with Stephen Curry, and one last super-team storyline. Miami may offer familiarity. Other teams may offer fresh intrigue. But Cleveland offers something none of them can manufacture… home.

The pull of home has never left

LeBron’s relationship with Cleveland has never been simple, but it has always been deep. He was the kid from Akron who carried the weight of a region before he was old enough to rent a car. He left, came back, and delivered the championship that changed the way an entire city saw itself. The 2016 Finals comeback against Golden State was more than a title; it was a civic release, a memory passed around like family history.

That history matters now. If James is thinking about legacy and the place where the final standing ovation should happen, there is no stage more fitting than Rocket Arena. Cleveland knows the full LeBron story: the promise, the heartbreak, the return, the parade, and the complicated love that comes with all of it.

The hints have only grown louder in recent days. James posted a video of himself driving through Northeast Ohio with the caption “enjoying a nice cruise thru my city,” a line that immediately sent Cavaliers fans into detective mode.

Around the same time, locals said he had reportedly joined Firestone Country Club in Akron. Yes, another small but meaningful sign that his life is still rooted deeply in the place where his story began. None of that guarantees a return, but in sports, timing, and symbolism matter. Right now, both seem to be pointing back toward Cleveland.

The Cavaliers can offer more than nostalgia

This is not just a sentimental fit. The Cavaliers have the kind of roster that could let LeBron contribute without asking him to drag a franchise through an 82-game season. With established talent, defensive structure, and a fan base that would instantly turn every home game into an event, Cleveland could give him a realistic basketball role and an emotional runway at the same time.

That balance is important. At this point in his career, James does not need to prove he can carry a team by himself. He needs the right ecosystem: competitive, familiar, respectful, and built to preserve his body for the moments that matter. Cleveland can sell him on being part of something rather than being asked to be everything.

The fan base is ready for one more goodbye

As someone who has watched Cleveland sports long enough to know that joy here is usually earned the hard way, the idea of LeBron finishing anywhere else feels incomplete. Fans in Northeast Ohio do not need him to return as the same player who chased down Andre Iguodala in 2016. They would welcome him as the legend who gave them the moment they had waited generations to feel.

There is something powerful about an athlete choosing to end where it began. The final introductions, the ovations, the first time he checks in wearing wine and gold again, the last regular-season home game. All of those moments would not just be NBA content. They would be Cleveland memories.

Legacy points toward wine and gold

LeBron has spent his career making calculated basketball decisions, but his biggest legacy moments have always carried emotional weight. Miami gave him championships. Los Angeles gave him another title, business opportunities, and a place among Lakers greats. Cleveland gave him immortality.

If this next stop is truly about happiness, meaning, and one last run at competitive basketball, the Cavaliers can offer all three. LeBro can compete without pretending time has not passed. He can mentor without disappearing into the background. He can let the league celebrate him while giving Cleveland the closing chapter it deserves.

The most natural ending

Nothing is official until LeBron says it is. Reports have connected him to several teams, and the Warriors remain a tempting basketball fantasy. But if the question is where his career is most likely to feel whole, the answer keeps pulling back toward Cleveland.

LeBron James does not owe the Cavaliers another return. He already delivered the impossible. But sports are at their best when the ending feels earned, and few endings would feel more earned than the kid from Akron walking off the floor one last time in a Cleveland uniform, with the city that raised him standing and roaring like it never stopped believing.
