Neoben's Blog

The solution is simple

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Fri, 01 Jun 2012 12:34:00 +0000

Me: "Damned, I'm exhausted"

A friend of mine: "What?"

Me: "It's since three days I'm working like crazy trying to solve a problem looking at a black shell."

A friend of mine: "Change the shell background color...no?"

Magic board! #2

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Tue, 15 May 2012 16:37:00 +0000

This time topic:
test an algorithm to build a dictionary binary tree used by the lz77 compressor to encode data.

Writing the compressor code is killing me!

Happy Mother's day!

Disappointed by my small town.
Disappointed by the people.
Disappointed by the way they think.

Forgive me for the outburst.

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Tue, 01 May 2012 14:19:00 +0000

Today I want to talk about something I really liked: Digital Diary.
It's a project born from the initiative of the APT Basilicata which selected seven and invited seven blogger and videomaker from all over the world "to create a very young and contemporary view of this Southern Italian region Basilicata."
Result: seven wonderful videos!

Here's the project promo:

Give a whiteboard to a computer engineer and he will conquer the world.

No...it isn't true, but he will enjoy so much :)

New look

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Sat, 31 Mar 2012 11:01:00 +0000

The blog has a new look! Clean and simple as I like.
I used an HTML5 + CSS3 template (you can find the reference in the footer) and I adapted it to the blog by editing a few lines of code.
I hope you enjoy it.

A new little project: The readers' diary

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Thu, 08 Mar 2012 20:37:00 +0000

Good evening!
As you have noticed, lately I'm not writing so much on the blog, but believe me, I'm full of commitments and deadlines.
This little post is made with the purpose to report you a project I created a few days ago.
I worked on it some nights and now it's on-line.
http://www.ildiariodeilettori.net
Take a look! (I'm sorry, but it is in Italian)
I have to immensely thank my mother for her help and for her suggestions. It is thank to her passion for books that I had the idea to realize the portal.
I hope you enjoy it.
See you...

Cocacolla to be closed for one letter

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Sat, 25 Feb 2012 09:38:00 +0000

PRESS RELEASE
Activity suspension

CocaColla.it is a blog born in 2010 that focuses on art, design, advertising, lifestyle and trends of
internet, dedicated to lovers of contemporary art in all its forms.

Our blog in these two years has been so successful that it became a point of reference for design and
street art.
Thanks to the constant daily effort and dedication of our team, Cocacolla entered the
italian charts of the industry, touching 1.5 MILLION unique visitors in the first year of life.
We count more than 7000 likers on Facebook and over 1000 followers on Twitter. Our articles have
been read in 202 countries around the world.
CocaColla has become so famous that even The Coca-Cola Company noticed us and a couple of
weeks ago we received from their legal department two letters of formal warning asking us to
withdraw the registration of brand CocaColla, give up the domain name “www.cocacolla.it”, and
close our related social profiles.
Penalty citation for trial.
The reason is the following: <<...that the registration and use by its domain name www.cocacolla.it
determines a serious risk of confusion for consumers who may be led to believe that the sign and
COCACOLLA domain name www.cocacolla.it are intended to distinguish goods / services delivered,
organized or sponsored by our customers or that the use of the sign COCACOLLA it’s part and has
been authorized by our client on the basis of agreements or other contractual links or corporate,
which is not true. The use of the sign COCACOLLA and the domain name www.cocacolla.it is also
counterfeit of the famous brands made by Coca-Cola, our client>>.
In short, they ask us to close, sell the domain and to suspend the practice of registration of the mark.
And this in only 15 days.
The idea of calling the blog with the name “CocaColla” came from one of our earliest brainstorming;
we thought to put together the glue, the basic fundamental artistic pratice and street-art, with
Coca-Cola, a symbol of pop culture, of industrialization and advertising.
For us, this name was everything we wanted to communicate: all our passions, all the topics that
would soon become the subjects of our daily work of research and content production. A name easy
to remember which hit off the world's most popular soft drink.
We imagined that sooner or later something would happen, so as soon as we received the letters, we
contacted a legal specialist in intellectual property. As he analyzed the case he convinced us that it
was better to quit everything because a lawsuit would be bloodshed, especially for our wallets.
Activity suspension
Ours is indeed a publishing project, and we could never afford a legal battle against a multinational
company like that.
Now for certain, we must inform you that on 5 March 2012 we will close www.cocacolla.it and all
social profiles related to it.
Needless to say, with bitterness, daughter of another situation in which David and Goliath inevitably
succumbs.
With this release we wanted you to know what’s happened and tell you that we are already working
on a new identity.
To avoid losing what’s made in these two years with CocaColla we ask you to support us by being the
first news on your blogs, your pages on your channel and on Twitter using the hashtag
#supportcocacolla. You can subscribe our newsletter to be updated on future developments remain
on our blog.
On this story we'll be grateful.

Mount ipod Touch on Xubuntu 11.10

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Wed, 08 Feb 2012 19:11:00 +0000

During these days I've almost gone crazy trying to mount my ipod Touch (I know what you're thinking...I know, but it's a gift and I care a lot about it) on my Xubuntu 11.10 system.
On the other Ubuntu distributions, thanks to the new libraries, the Apple devices are mounted automatically once connected to the USB, but Xface, for some reason, do not wants to.

After tried in all ways, I found the solution casually:
it was sufficient to install ifuse and start nautilus to browse the system directories.
My device finally appeared on the left column.
Right click, mount.
Simple and painless.

sudo apt-get install ifuse
sudo apt-get install nautilus

Waiting for Volunia

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Mon, 06 Feb 2012 16:08:00 +0000

Today is the day of the presentation of Volunia, the new search engine (and maybe something more) created by Prof. Massimo Marchiori who already conceived the PageRank currently used by Google.

I'm so curious to use my Power User account to test it.

Codemotion 2012

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Thu, 02 Feb 2012 10:42:00 +0000

The second edition of the Codemotion, the event open to all languages and technologies, will be held on 23 and 24 March 2012 in Rome. The main news of the Codemotion 2012 consist of: two days of technical talks and double event at the same time in Rome and Madrid.

The prolongation, from one to two days, will be the opportunity to distribute the Codemotion activities over a larger period. The participants will have the possibility to follow their favorite tasks less likely to incur the risk of tasks overlapping.

The coincidence in time between Rome and Madrid will construct an event that will unite the two capitals through the passion of technology and programming. Codemotion Rome and Codemotion Madrid are organized in the same spirit and format, the technical contents and the Codemotion People will be the protagonists.

The Codemotion will be held in Rome on 23 and 24 March 2012.
The entrance to the event is free as always.

GIT Repository

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Sat, 21 Jan 2012 14:51:00 +0000

I finally decided to order my projects and create a GIT Repository.
Some time ago I made an account on Bitbucket (I highly recommend it, excellent service!) and I started to export the projects already on my website.

A little contest about logic (& maybe programming)

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Thu, 12 Jan 2012 18:43:00 +0000

Today I'd like to propose to you another little contest of logic.
This one is less "mathematical" than the previous, but it's very funny.

There is a very particular city.
In this city whatever you have with you is stolen when you live your house.
The only thing that is not stolen is a chest locked with a padlock.
Now, consider two inhabitants of this city, Alice and Bob.
Each of them has a chest, a padlock and a key.
Alice wants to bring a cake to Bob. How can she do it?

The NASA and the Open Source get along with each other

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Fri, 06 Jan 2012 21:53:00 +0000

Today I discovered an interesting initiative of the NASA.
A few days ago, two websites were launched with the purpose of publishing all the NASA's Open Source activities.
"The site will serve to surface existing projects, provide a forum for discussing projects and processes, and guide internal and external groups in open development, release and contribution..."
http://open.nasa.gov
http://code.nasa.gov
Very very interesting!

2012

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Mon, 02 Jan 2012 11:18:00 +0000

A new year has begun.
For me it is full of good intentions. I'm going to finish all the ongoing projects, start with new ones...in other words work hard.
Never mind the Maya and let's get it on.
Good luck to everyone!

VHDL projecting using GHDL and GTKWave

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Mon, 19 Dec 2011 20:52:00 +0000

GHDL and GTKWave are an excellent soulution, if you're looking for something to design in VHDL under GNU/Linux.

Let's look at how to install and compile.

To install the tools, just digit on the terminal:
sudo apt-get install ghdl gtkwave

The command to compile the VHDL source (with .vcd extension) is:
ghdl -a --std=02 --ieee=synopsys source.vhd

To test any VHDL project you must create an appropriate testbench.

The command to compile the testbench (with .vcd extension) is the same as shown above:
ghdl -a --std=02 --ieee=synopsys testbench.vhd

Now you need to generate the testbench executable with the command:
ghdl -e --std=02 --ieee=synopsys tb
where tb is the entity name of the file testbench.vhd.

In conclusion you must create the executable testbench with extension .vcd to be supplied to GTKWave:
ghdl -r --std=02 --ieee=synopsys tb --vcd=testbench.vcd

To graphically display the signal evolution of the realized circuit :
gtkwave testbench.vcd

Paranoid Android

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Sun, 30 Oct 2011 11:46:00 +0000

Time 12:34 AM. I've just finished my first Android application.
Six JAVA classes, nine XML files, one SQLite database, four different interfaces...it works!
Now it's time to test it seriously (on someone else's phone).

Assembly syntax highlighting with Gedit

noreply@blogger.com (Neoben) — Wed, 26 Oct 2011 12:55:00 +0000

For those who need it, here it is a simple solution to obtain Assembly highlighting code in Gedit (that basic is not supported).
Download this file (asm-intel.lang) on your machine and copy it in the directory:
/usr/share/gtksourceview*.0/language-specs/
That's it!
