We needed an algorithm to rank these funny videos by comedic potential, e.g. is “Charlie bit my finger” funnier than “David after dentist”? Raw viewcount on its own is insufficient as a ranking metric since it is biased by video age and exposure. We noticed that viewers emphasize their reaction to funny videos in several ways: e.g. capitalization (LOL), elongation (loooooool), repetition (lolololol), exclamation (lolllll!!!!!), and combinations thereof. If a user uses an “loooooool” vs an “loool”, does it mean they were more amused? We designed features to quantify the degree of emphasis on words associated with amusement in viewer comments. We then trained a passive-aggressive ranking algorithm using human-annotated pairwise ground truth and a combination of text and audiovisual features. Similar to Music Slam, we used this ranker to populate candidates for human voting for our Comedy Slam.

My pet project has been to recreate a full-scale version of World of Warcraft inside Minecraft. The creation of the world is largely automated by custom software which I’ve been developing over the last few weeks. It’s just now reached a point where I can release some quality screenshots!

In diesem Video erklären zwei Leute, wie man leuchtendes Kryptonit-Sushi aus genetisch manipulierten Fischen macht. Das Projekt ist Teil einer Ausstellung namens „Edible: The Taste of Things To Come“ in der Science Gallery in Dublin und dort kann man sich neben vielen anderen Sachen auch noch das Konzept zu 3D-gedruckten Insekten-Cookies anschauen. 3D-Gedruckte essbare Space-Shuttles und Schokolade hatte ich hier schon, also gehen natürlich auch 3D-gedruckte Kekse aus zermanschten Insekten. It has an ecological dimension – crickets take four times less energy to produce than beef – even if it also has a pretty strong yuck factor. But extruding the insect protein into alternative shapes could help to eliminate that. Joe Sacco ist Comiczeichner und gilt ein bisschen als Erfinder der Kriegsreportage-Comics, am bekanntesten sind seine Bücher „Palestine“ und „Footnotes in Gaza“, letzteres wird jetzt als Animationsfilm adaptiert. Freut mich immer sehr, wenn ernste Comics umgesetzt werden und nicht nur Superheldenunfug über alberne Typen in Spandexhosen. Eine meiner Lieblings-Comicverfilmungen ist „Persepolis“ und auch wenn „Waltz with Bashir“ strenggenommen nicht auf einem Comic basiert, die thematische Nähe zu dem Stoff hier sind unübersehbar.

Die Produktion läuft grade erst an, bis wir den Film zu sehen bekommen, wird es noch ‘ne ganze Weile dauern, von Animationsfilme.ch: „Der kanadische Regisseur Denis Villeneuve, der aktuell mit seinem Film Incendies für einen Oscar® in der Kategorie “Bester fremdsprachiger Film” nominiert ist, wird die Graphic Novel Footnotes in Gaza von Joe Sacco als Animationsfilm umsetzen. Die Pariser Produktionsfirma “Tu Vas Voir” hat sich kurz nach der ersten Publikation (2009) um die Verfilmungsrechte bemüht. Produzent Amiel Tenenbaum habe bereits sehr früh Villeneuve als möglichen Regisseur im Kopf gehabt und nach einem Meeting zwischen dem Kanadier und Sacco, sei die Zusammenarbeit beschlossen gewesen. Footnotes in Gaza wird ein abendfüllender Animationsfilm, der sich von Saccos Schwarzweissbildern inspirieren lassen wird. Footnotes erzählt die Geschichte um das Leben in der Stadt Rafah im Gazastreifen, in der wärend der Suez-Krise 1956 mehr als einhundert palästinensische Flüchtlinge in einem Massaker der israelischen Armee umkamen. Dieses Kapitel wird in der Geschichtsschreibung nicht erwähnt und gilt als „Fussnote“. Joe Sacco hat Überlebende des Massakers und Zeitzeugen befragt, woraus der Comic entstand.

Das Buch erzählt seine Geschichte über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 50 Jahren und ist nicht nur eine Wiedergabe der Ereignisse, sondern auch Alltagsdarstellung des Lebens im Gazastreifen damals. Vom Klappentext:

EA: What’s it like to know that two artists of whom you are, by your own admission, a huge fan of, know about and encourage about your work?

Seit gestern passiert etwas bemerkenswertes auf Kickstarter. Tim Schafer, Game-Designer solcher Legenden wie Monkey Island und Day of the Tentacle, wollte mal wieder ein Point-and-Click-Adventure machen. Da kein Publisher ein solches Game heutzutage veröffentlichen würde, hat er ‘ne Kickstarter-Kampagne ins Leben gerufen und dort nach der stolzen Summe von 400.000 Dollar gefragt, zusätzlich soll eine Doku über die Entstehung des Games gefilmt werden. Die News ging im Netz rum wie nix und die 400k waren innerhalb von 8 Stunden beisammen (!). Derzeit steht die Aktion bei rund 1,2 Millionen Dollar (!!) und das alles nichtmal innerhalb von 24 Stunden (!!!)

Das ist heftig, aber keine wirkliche Überraschung, wenn man genauer drüber nachdenkt. Tim Schafer hat sich mit seinen Games einen Legendenstatus in der Gaming-Community erarbeitet und die ist online wohl neben den Techies und den Codern die aktivste überhaupt. Die Aktion zeigt aber auch: Produkte für scheinbare Nischenmärkte lassen sich so ohne größeres Risiko finanzieren, wenn man es schafft, die Leute zu aktivieren (und das sehr unterhaltsame Video hat sicherlich auch nicht grade wenig dazu beigetragen).

Es wird wahrscheinlich noch ‘ne Weile dauern, bis wir ähnliches hier in Deutschland sehen würden. Erste Anzeichen gibt’s bereits mit dem crowdfunded Stromberg-Film, den finde ich allerdings durch seinen Old-Media-Hintergrund nicht wirklich vergleichbar.

Ich verfolge diese Crowdsourcerei schon eine ganze Weile und finde die Entwicklung grade hinsichtlich Kultur im Netz und auch Urheberrechtsfragen und Piraterie immens wichtig (für letzteres muss man um ein paar Ecken denken, erklär ich gerne ein anderes mal). Vor 8 Stunden twitterte Tim O’Reilly: „Seems to me that Kickstarter is the most important tech company since Facebook. Maybe more important in the long run.“ Sehe ich schon seit einer ganzen Weile genauso.

This display of giving has been remarkable to watch. Not altruistic, obviously – people want the game. Anyone who has been refreshing the Kickstarter page can’t have failed to bristle with excitement when they’ve seen it’s leapt up by another $10,000 in the last five minutes. 26,000 people have backed this, pledging an average of $40 each. And sure, a publisher can see those as tiny numbers if compared to game sales, it’s crucial to remember that this is in under a day, and it’s only by people who’ve been following the story! There’s been no long-term advertising campaign, just the press generated by a day’s excitement. And of course for DF, there’s no debt, and no publisher breathing down their neck.

This isn’t a sign of how all games will be funded – obviously not. This isn’t the death of publishing, or whatever other rather silly comments some have made today. But what it is, is a loud, clear signal from the gaming audience that the middlemen are not always necessary, they are not necessary for the creative industry to succeed. Because this isn’t a lone example, this is one of many creative projects that have found their way to success through the patronage of their customers. Whatever happens next, direct funding is going to play a large part in it.

Double Fine’s Adventure Kickstarter Tops $1,000,000!

Wo wir grade bei Sachen waren, die ich vor drölf Jahren gepostet hatte: Mike Horn hatte vor drölf Jahren einen Viral-Hit mit seinem Death Star over San Francisco (und mit dem Nachfolger Death Star vs Enterprise), jetzt hat er vor ein paar Tagen mit Death Star over Copenhagen nachgelegt. Ist nur ein Commercial für ‘nen Spielzeugladen, eigentlich so aufregend wie vier Jahre alte Socken und Star Wars ist 2012 ja ohnehin toter als tot, es sei aber der Vollständigkeit halber einfach erwähnt. Damit die Lichtschwertsammlung komplett bleibt. Und die anderen beiden Dinger gibt’s nach dem Klick.
