Ok, so the new site didn't work out and I'm bringing the site back today with a BUNCH of posts to share. OK, so what do we got?

Well THIS post is gonna be about Sony's press conference.

3D first.... yay, that's pretty cool. But you better not make it necessary, and I would prefer not to wear glasses. I mean come on, Nintendo got it to work. (More on that later if i get around to it.)

Next up is the PlayStation Move. Ok, yes, they stole it from Nintendo, BUT, to be honest, I think this looks pretty sweet. It, like the 3D, better not be required, and if its there it better be done WELL. Don't be lame.

Last and LEAST, PlayStation Plus, a subscription service for PlayStation..... WTH?!??!?!?!!? Ok, this is why I bought a PS3. Everything was free.

Ok, before you freak out to much, it really isn't THAT bad. I mean, I'm not cool with it out all but, really it's just like a membership to gamestop where you get stuff on discounts but you also get bonus content for the games you have. So if you are a hardcore gamer and need the extra stuff, go pay for a subscription.

That's lame, don't go through with it Sony.

Man, I wish Google would make a system, that way they wouldn't be evil.

Hey everybody.... so if you HAVE been looking at the new site, you would have seen that... nothing is happening. Well here it is.... I NEED SOME AUTHORS!!!! So your Sansa e250 doesn't do as much as you wish? Hate the converter that takes forever to twist your video 90 degrees? Want play mini games on it like iPod, or have a search function? Hate the way that it sorts your your music by artist ("What do you mean DAUGHTRY/Slash?") Or are your standards so high you have to able to play a FPS on it?

Well here is the answer to all your problems (yes, even the FPS one.)

Introducing RockBox freeware, alternate "OS" for your mp3 player.

Rockbox is a open source freeware for mp3 players of all different sorts. To name a few, Archos, iRiver, iPod, and Sansa (both e200 and c200 series.) Comes with a wide sort of games and other plug ins, including a text editor, dictionary, and stop watch. The theme of your player can be downloaded from anywhere you can find one or you can build one yourself. As for the FPS, its a version of DOOM called FREE DOOM. It's not that great graphically but what do you expect? HD?

The only troubles I had with was getting use to it and I also had to do some configuring. Like that the if the screen is off i can turn it on by the first button I push. The equalizer was a but rough at first too but I think I got it now.

Either way, I love it and its much beter than what was on it. Enjoy.

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron Beta

Sorry for not posting in so long guys. I've been having so much fun on Spring Break, I've forgotten to post. Well, they just released the Hardy beta, and I suppose I'll review it as a way of coming back. Now, keep in mind, I'm running it in a virtual system, so it won't run as well as it would if I installed it on my pc. But here we go.

Upon booting the disc, we get the familiar Ubuntu LiveCD boot screen

Once it's done loading, we get a look at Ubuntu's lovely new wallpaper. (Sexy, eh?)

The installing's pretty much the same. No need to walk you through that.

Oh, by the way, while I wait for it to install, what do you guys think of our NnH's logo (at the top of the page)? I made it myself in GIMP. I was quite impressed by how well it turned out. It was the first time I'd ever used GIMP.

If there are actually any readers out there, I'm gonna have to stop for now. It's late, and I've got school in the morrow. I'll finish tomorrow.

Alright. I'm back. I don't really have much to say about it. There's a few things changed, but not really much that I saw. I do have one bad thing to say. Getting flash installed on the beta is even harder than on Gutsy. I suggest staying with Gutsy for now. If we're lucky, when Hardy releases, it'll be amazing!

Compatibility - We Need to Get Some!

Hey everyone!

Remember a couple posts back I talked about how Bill Gates is retiring and blah, bla... er I mean.... etc etc, Linux will rise, yad... er.... so on and so forth.

Well, I was talking with my friend while we were walking to and from the BP getting some pop for our late night gaming of Super Smash Bros. Brawl (W00T!!!). We discussed, a bit, how Windows and XBOXs are, respectively, compatible.

I'm actually honestly have no clue what exactly supposed to be able to do if these things are connected (I don't have a XBOX sadly.) But I do know that you can. Along with the Apple products. Macs, iPods, iPhones, iTouch, and I believe iTV... I think... and they are all somehow greatly compatible.

In fact, for those who don't read the news, Apple IS slowly gaining on Microsoft. This probably is due to more compatible devices.

Linux can be or is in many products, mp3 players, XBOXs, Game cube and of course PCs. Unfortunately though, not all of these different products aren't naturally compatible with each other. This is the cause, I believe, of so many different Linux distros working independently of one another.

Linux based products that are naturally compatible with each other would help Linux rise in the world and take over from Microsoft, instead of leaving the world in the hands of... Apple...

We, the Linux users, developers, any one else that's supports Linux, are a community. We are concerned with some of the distractions other parties do. So why don't we work together on making Linux devices and products compatible with each other.

So here is the challenge for everyone, mostly for, what I would say, the three major Linux distros Ubuntu, Fedora, and SuSE/openSuSE. Make a version of YOUR Linux for other devices. If you succeed, then lets take it to the next level. Make your devices. Make your Linux mp3 players. Make your Linux game systems. Heck, make your own Linux home theater systems. Just make sure its all naturally integrated.

Spread the challenge, cause together, we will take Linux to the top. We will help the world with the power of Linux... this about the time SuperTux should me appearing... any time now... come on...

Portable Apps - YAY OPEN SOURCE!

One of the first posts (actually the first "real" post) I put up was on putting programs onto your Flash Drive. I also mentioned how most of San Disk's flash drives (the ones with U3) ran programs from the flash drive. For those who don't have a San Disk U3 Smart Drive and/or you hate going through all those files looking for the one that launches the program that you want, this program may come in handy.

The name of this program is Portable Apps, which can be found at PortableApps.com. Take some of your favorite open source programs anywhere and everywhere you go. From internet applications such as Firefox, Thunderbird and Pidgin to your favorite media players such as the VLC Player and the MPlayer to OpenOffice Applications. You can even run OSs... but so far only Mac OS Classic 7, but they say they are working on some Linux distros.

As well as running apps, Portable Apps even creates folders like in Windows. My Documents, Music, Videos, and Pictures.

The only downside is that it is only compatible with Windows and maybe Mac.

Overall I give it a... 7/10 from a concept view, since i havn't tried it yet... (stupid dial-up not fast enough)

Battlefield Heroes!

OK, so Linux isn't the best at everything... YET! Linux unfortunately doesn't have as great as action and FPS games as... man I hate to say it... as Windows does. *shivers*

But one game in particular I read about caught my eye and will have a special place on my Windows Partition, waiting for when it comes out.

This game would be Battlefield Heroes by EA. It was featured on the cover of Games for Windows March 2008, page 56.

Unlike other Battlefield games, this game has a bit of a Team Fortress look, is in Third Person Shooter format and is entirely FREE (should be Linux supportive.)

Battlefield, due to release sometime in September 2008, is a cross of a social game (Such as Habbo Hotel and Coke Studio) and a MMOFPS (such as War Rock or other FPS games.) Players will play as characters of a clan and battle other clans and alliances for parts of Europe and in game cash, which can be used to buy different accessories and weapons for your character. At the end of the week, the clan who controls most of Europe will be awarded with a prize of some sort.

There will be something that can be bought with real money. But don't worry, this is only to level the playing field. This item will increase the speed at which I level up. Here is a example.

I have dial-up (UGH!) at home and only am around with high speed with my laptop once in awhile, therefore can't compete as much as other people and level up that fast. Whereas others can play all the time and level up quicker than I. This item will allow me to level faster in the time I have to play, but this item is optional.

But what about inside the game. The game has a ton of weapons to choose from, and there will be more to come as the game goes on. Rocket & grenade launchers to AK-47s. As for vehicles, the game offers motorbikes to Jeeps to Tanks to o0o a airplane.

Some games offer certain classes such as Sniper, Medic, Assault, and Engineer. This is true for Battle Heroes as well, except unlike games, such as War Rock, you can't change after you die. You stick to the class until the end of the battle. Each class also has certain special abilities. Some somewhat realistic, while others... not so much. One such ability would be seeing though walls.

Either way I can't wait till the game is released. Meet you on the Battlefield soldier.

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Flash Installation

A lot of people seem to be having issues installing Flash on Gutsy Gibbon. Well, I think I may know how to fix it. Just open Firefox, click Tools, Add-ons, and disable ubufox. From there, restart Firefox, go to a page that needs flash. Install it, and you're good to go, FOR NOW. Today, my sound stopped working. It took me about 2 hours of googling, but I found the answer. Just download this .deb file
and install it. Restart Firefox, and, if you're lucky like me, your sound will be working again!

Linux, It's In More Places Than You Think!

These past months using Linux (Seriously, after I thought about it hasn't been that long, about a couple months) I have come to notice that Linux is in more places than you I thought. Linux on your phone (Ubuntu Mobile Edition, or as shown here), Linux on your mp3 player (look in my recommended section of the page on the right) Linux on your gaming system (for the original X-Box - Xebian, for Nintendo GameCube check out this) and of course on your computer. Now at the moment I can't think of anything else to install Linux into.

Now would stores sell it? Yeah, Walmart is selling a Desktop with Linux already installed. And if I recall correctly (I'm in a but of a rush and don't have time to look) it's a version of Linux made by Google. Amazon is selling PCs, Laptops and mp3 players all with a Linux of some sort installed onto to it.

In a way I guess in a way this is a bit on a continuation of my last post on Bill Gates. Linux isn't going to rise cause it's already rising. When Bill Gates retires Linux will make a huge jump in taking over. We will begin to have Linux based anything and everything that requires a OS. Linux will rise and the only thing we can and should do about it, is support it. Join now and you will have no worries.

As the "nerd" part of this blog, I believe that it my duty to inform you of the gaming culture that is rapidly growing in the United States, as well as other independent societies. A new game was accepted into that culture on the 20th of this month, a $10 Xbox Live Arcade game that I haven't stopped playing for almost a week and a half, pretty good by my standards. N+, the way of the Ninja, is an excellent platformer/puzzle game. First off on my gigantic list of pluses for this game is its simplicity. Anyone with 2 thumbs that can hold a controller can play this game, not to mention the fact that the objective is also pretty clear, get to the exit door after you hit the master control while dodging Ninja-killing robots (Tracking Missile Launchers, Machine gun drones, et cetera). Second is the fact that it is overwhelmingly appealing to the eye, with customizable Ninjas, plus simple blocks mixed in with the most-of-the-time bright colors of your enemys, not to mention the gold scattered thoughout the level. Everybody can play this game, albeit probably not very well to start, but the controls are "so simple a caveman could do it." One button to press for jumping and one stick for movement. In a few rounds, you'll be able to wall jump, leap tall buildings with a single bound, and be able to congratulate yourself on a job well-done after an indescribably hard "episode", or a level with 5 levels inside of it. Also, Metagame (the developers of N and N+) added an easy-to-use level editor, so the fun never stops. And, in N+, there is a co-op feature, so you can party it up with all of your friends (that is, assuming you only have 3 friends). After playing N+, and the original N, and beating half the game (there are 50 episodes, not to mention expert challenges), I have decided to give this game a solid 9/10, seeing as the only disadvantages are that: it isn't free and some of the levels will leave your TV in dire need of repair with your controller embedded in it with you having most of your hair forcibly removed from your head with your own hands. So, if you have Live with some extra cash hanging around, I highly recommend buying this game. I have even heard of N+ coming out for the Nintendo DS. Trust me, this game will not let you down.

Bill Gates Retires, Will Linux Rise?

Yes, it's true, Bill Gates is retiring from his job as chief software architect of Microsoft, which he founded 30 years ago.

Gates says he will gradually begin to back away from his job to make a good transition from him to the two new chiefs, Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie. This is most likely done so that Microsoft won't see a big drop in sales.

"Except for a little vacation this summer that's longer than normal, I'll be working as hard as I ever have over the next two years," Gates said at news conference at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

But since the two new men are placed, Bill probably won't be doing as much with the company.

Gates also assures us that he doesn't plan on leaving his position as chairman of Microsoft's board of directors. "I don't see a time in the future when I won't be chairman of this company," he said. "I see myself as always being the largest shareholder in Microsoft. Steve is the second largest, and I think we both take a lot of pride in that."

It is said that Bill will be leaving in July and will be working more with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

But some are asking "Is this Linux's chance?," and it very may well be. Most believe that it was Bill who drove this company for these 30 years, and without him they won't be able to stand.

"But what about Apple? They aren't out of the picture."
This is true, but when you consider the price of Apples and then look at the computers already containing Linux, the price has a enormous gap. Its a bit of a no brainer, buy Linux!

Now of course, before Linux goes out to public, average, not as computer literate as some, consumers, there going to have to be some changes.

Linux, open source, is very... open. There are a lot of things that people won't understand. Especially when they are moving from Windows to Linux. The interface may have to be altered so it's more user friendly. Installation of some packages may have to be easier (in reference with the apt-get commands).

"Ok, but which Linux?"

Very good question really. There are so many out there what will be the norm?
KDE, Gnome, or Xfce?
Debian or that other RedHat one I can't think of right now?

Personally I believe to be that it will be Ubuntu. It's currently the top Linux EVERYWHERE!!! No matter where you, Ubuntu is Number 1!

"Does this mean that Linux will go commercial?"

Unfortunately it may go a bit commercial, but there really isn't no need to panic. There are currently some Linux OSs that you have to buy to use. Though Linux will always be open source and always be legal to edit, some OSs may begin to be sold.

As for software, yes, there will probably be software that will be sold, but someone will just develop a program that does the same thing and be free to download over the internet.

Overall, Linux very well may become the top dog, and those who use it already, YES, YOUR AHEAD OF THE WORLD!!!

But really, what are your opinions? Please post comments on what you think will be the results.

So, I was browsing the interwebs, and I came across this really cool concept idea for a computer. It's a coffee cup.

You can fill it with coffee, tea, or any liquid for that matter, and it seems like it'll have a touch screen for you to check your email, stocks, the weather, and even traffic conditions. Could be cool.

It's Academic: From Windows to Linux. Part 1: (Adding Repositories)

Hi, I'm Alex. This will be a small guide for users just switching to Linux. I'll try my best to provide links and resources for users who have just gotten away from Windows.

NOTE: This is for Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. If you don't have that, I can't help you. Sorry.

The first thing you should do is add some repositories.
Click system on your top panel. From there, go to Administration, and click Software Sources. Check the four main repositories. (main, universe, restricted, multiverse)

Now you should add some third-party repositories (keep in mind, they're not monitored.)

I suggest you now add Medibuntu, a very popular repository. To do this, open up a terminal, and type (or copy):

deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ gutsy free non-free

On a new line, once that's done, type:

wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -

This adds a key to your version of medibuntu.

As you can probally tell, there are quite a few changes to the site. Trying to raise site publicity, I have added digg, FeedBurner and some Feedburner Services. To thank them I decided to write some things about them... er... well... maybe I'll just say what they said about themselves. (I actually hate writing if you haven't figured it out yet)

UNIX's Y2K... Y2K38!

Hey remember 8 years ago when Y2K was worrying everyone? Well if you use a UNIX based system... IT'S HAPPENING ALL OVER AGAIN!!! WATCH OUT FOR Y2K38!!!

At exactly January 19, 2038 3:14:08 (one second past the maximum UNIX time), one of two things can happen to programs that keep track of time with this format. It will either crash and stop functioning altogether, or it will rollback time to the beginning of UNIX time: the first minute of 1970.

OK, actually it's not that big of a deal. If your OS gets frequent updates then you probably have nothing to worry about. Else... you got some coding to do... hope you know C.
