I’m pretty sure it was a green Christmas there. We had a tradition of always going swimming Christmas day. I think I like my Chicago snow better. :) I had been hoping for a new leotard for my gymnastics class and remember seeing some inflatable instruments in a picture, so I probably asked Santa for those as well.

I had gone to bed that night, but woke up and went to check out if Santa had come. Guaranteed it had only been 5 minutes or so since my parents were under the tree arranging the presents. And that was the day the Santa died.

I don’t know if seven is old to still believe in Santa, but either way, I did. And that’s how I knew he wasn’t real. I read BeTheBoy’s version of his loss of innocence and was inspired. Please to share your own tale!

Next, how I found out The Shire didn’t exist in 2005.

Just kidding.

Harry Potter theme park construction begins

Some construction updates with stills

Not much to see yet except some "mysterious mounds of dirt".

Superlinking: What up??

I haven't had a lot of time on my hands recently so I've just gotten around to catching up on my feed reader and news. I'm telling you that because it's less embarrassing that way.

I've been seeing this meme on a few blogs that I read and nobody has yet to tag me with it, so I'm taking it upon myself to divulge 8 things about me that you might not know. And since most of my readers don't know me, that should be easy.

1. This one is not secret as everyone in the world has seen me do it. I will always fall on ice and wet floors. Always. Never fails. It happens so often that I warn people about it before I step outside in inclement weather. It makes it less embarrassing that way. And then I tell people why I'm telling people. It's a vicious cycle and still always leave me on the floor.

A friend once sent me this picture to honor my plight.

2. I (not-so) secretly want to be a documentary filmmaker and have at least 5 legitimate movie ideas in my head. And I'm also not motivated to do it.

3. I often think about running away to live in an abandoned train station a la The Station Agent. Or just hop on a train to anywheresville a la Ghost World. If you have never thought about faking your death and going to live in the mountains, I question your sanity. I wonder what I would be like without outside influences and media in general. I think I would be cooler.

4. I love stuffed animals. I wish they matched adult decor because then I would own many more than I do, which is only a couple. When I was little, I used to think they came alive at night (and still kind of do) and would alternate who got to sleep on the bed so they didn't get jealous. One would always end up on the floor by morning and I would be wracked with guilt.

5. I love garden gnomes. Pre-Amelie and post.

6. I can be pretty girly sometimes, but most of the time I have the sense of humor of a guy. Judd Apatow is my hero.

7. I was captain of the debate team in high school which I so rarely get to talk about now, despite it being all-consuming at the time. I wasn't the best, but I was pretty good by the end. I think it colors all my debates in life, of which there are a few indeed. Oh, and it makes me a huge DORK!!

8. For the past two months or so, I have had Cheer Up Gingerballs and Frodo, Don't Wear the Ring on constant repeat in my head. It's a sickness.

Bawk, I'm telekinetic!

I hope you are all planning to make some variation of Roast Chicken, Italian-Style, but with Turkey for Thanksgiving. I ran across it again while searching for recipes. I only wish I had the drive to do something like this, but I am too lazy and don't love touching dead animals if I can avoid it.

One year at Thanksgiving, my mom went to my sister's house for the traditional feast. Knowing how gullible my sister was, mom decided to play a trick. She told my sister that she needed something from the store and sent her for it. While she was gone, my mom took the turkey out of the oven, stuffed it, restuffed it with a Cornish game hen, put stuffing back over the top of it, and put it back in the oven.

When it came time for dinner, my sister pulled the turkey out of the oven and proceeded to remove the stuffing. When her serving spoon hit something, she reached in and pulled out this little bird.

With a look of total shock on her face, my mother exclaimed, "Patricia, you killed a pregnant bird!!" At the reality of this horrifying news, my sister started to cry. It took my mother two hours to convince her that turkeys lay eggs.

From Urban Legends on About.com

Proof Positive

Cowboy The Cat asked me to prove that I do indeed look different in bookstore and out, per my previous post. I have taken photographic evidence of said difference and am posting here as proof. It’s a subtle difference, but I think some people can see it.

Here I am on my way to work:

And in the bookstore, reading, obviously.

I should live in the library

Sorry about the lack of weekend posting, I am still out of computer-ness at home. Instead of spending the usual amount of internet time on the weekend, I saw Dan in Real Life. I really wanted to see Beowulf in 3D, but it wasn’t the right company for that amount of awesomeness. However, Steve Carell did not disappoint, as I should have known. It was like a big ol’ hug, that movie. Not too sugary, but definitely sweet. Like a dessert, but coffee flavored. And it makes me forget all of Dane Cook’s other movies.

Yes, Dane Cook is in it. And I still recommend it. He is actually really good in it.

On the way out of the theater, my friend and I went to Barnes and Noble to look at the holiday cards. We milled about for a good hour. My friend left and I went to check out. After flirting with the cutie checkout guy, he asks for my number. I leave glowing and the security guard catches my arm. Did I shoplift a moleskin journal or something? (Side note: it wouldn’t have been a book since the whole first floor of this B&N consisted of mostly calendars and gifts.)

But no, he wanted to chat me up and ask what movie I saw and when we were going to see a movie. Now, this might be the life of some girls, but I am not one of them. No, no, I do not get hit on. The only other time in the last year anything like this had happened, it was also in a bookstore. So, my theory is that I was either wearing the best combination of outerwear one could image (hat and pigtails, natch) or I am the type of girl that just looks good in a bookstore.

Men see me there among all the tomes and say, “Man, she looks…bookish.”

Mario cupcakes

I have found some really great cupcakes recently. I don’t know what it is since I don’t even like them. To eat, that is. Apparently I love to look at them. Maybe it’s my destiny to be a baker or something. Just like George W. is meant to the “The Decider”. Who knows.

I really need a vacation. And to stop posting about cupcakes. But seriously, I am ready for a four day weekend. Good thing there is one coming up. Those three days prior though, are going to be long.

Mario cupcakes via GeekSugar

Top 5 Ways The Office can still air without writers

The Office will be the first primetime sitcom to go dark from the writer's strike. I'm all for the strike, don't get me wrong, but a girl's gotta have her Office. I present to you the "Top 5 Ways The Office Can Still Air Without Writers". It won't be as good as the scripts, of course, but until they can come up with a resolution, we'll need something to keep us happy.

Top 5 Ways The Office can still air without writers

5. A bloopers episode. We all want that.
4. Those hour-long "extended" episodes where they run reruns with extra footage. It may be cheap, but it's better than nothing.
3. Smoosh the webispodes/extra web content into a highlights episode.
2. Show Pam and Jim gazing at each other longingly for a half hour. You know they're going to end soon and we should be milking their happiness while we can.

And finally...

1. Rainn Wilson and Steve Carell improvise an entire show. Come on, we know they have it in them!*

*Obviously, this couldn't work since Carell won't cross the picket lines, but I can still have my hypothetical fun. Good job, Steve, btw. Here's a video of Greg Daniels, et al, on the picket lines.

To-Do before 2007 dies

I am a class-A procrastinator and am bad about doing stuff…yes, in general. Some people get on the to-do bandwagon after Jan. 1, but I prefer to wok with deadlines.

1. <del>Buy a new TV.</del> Done! And it’s a nice jump up from my old-as-dirt 23 incher.
2. Sell my computer. Wanna buy it?
3. Find a new dentist. I need a nice one. With a winning attitude and some nitrous.
4. Switch over to CFLs…all of them this time.
5. Organize my closets, drawers and storage.
6. Visit my friends who live farther away than my television.
7. Refinance. Again. Because people suck.
8. Accomplish something awesome before 10 year reunion
9. Add more things to to-do list
10. Panic when they are not done
11. (We were creating a team spirit-esque project and were using some Transformer inspiration.) In my opinion, Michael Bay took ol' Opty, threw him on the floor, and pieced him back together. He looks a bit...shardy? Is that a word?

Anyway, I was outvoted at work. Most people thought new Optimus was not only recognizable, but way cooler! I'm like, what what??

So, few loyal readers, it's up to you. How do you like your Optimus...kickin' it old skool cartoon-style? Unhappy days ahead. I’m terrible about keeping warranty info and useful items like that. In the meantime, blogging will probably be lighter since I do most of my blog-thinking at home.

But a couple of updates…one that really emphasizes my nerdiness. Two nights ago I went to see So You Think You Can Dance on tour. It was fabulous, despite being farther away than I would have liked. They turn off the giant screen while the folks are dancing, which focuses my eye on them, but you miss all the details. They did, however, hit all of the dances I wanted to see. Good stuff.

Jeez, Whedon!

Don't you hate it when one of your favorite show creators keeps reusing actors that you just don't like? Joss Whedon, of Buffy/Angel/Firefly/etc. fame, has a new show coming out on Fox called Dollhouse that, when I read the plotline, looked really cool. Then I saw that it stars Eliza Dushku. I have nothing against her, per se, it's just that she utterly ruins shows with her iron death grip of terrible acting. My apologies if you are a fan, but it had to be said.

Well, it didn't have to be, but I guess it is being said. ;)

Either way, I still think I'll give this one a shot. But be warned, Whedon, if I weren't so lazy, you would be receiving a long list of actresses that should be blacklisted from all your future shows! Yes, it would be a list of one, since I can't think of any others. Feel free to include any suggestions for this meager list. Of if you are heartily in love with her, you're probably enjoying this news.

PostSecret this week...

There were a couple of doozies in this week's PostSecret. Crazy thing after crazy thing. I am in serious need of vacation. December…December…come sooner.

Anyway, I went to see The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D, since it’s having it’s “limited engagement” run. I’m fairly sure I’ve seen a 3D movie in my life, but I don’t remember it, so it doesn’t count! The best part were the 3D previews and the graphics. We should have more movies in 3D. The only problem is we’d have to wear the glasses more often. I don’t know what Buddy Holly fan designed these babies, but they are something to be admired.

Other than looking hot in the glasses, we had a couple other encounters of note in the theater. The first was this cute older man sitting behind us. He was obviously a fan of the movie as he sang along and laughed throughout the whole thing. It was pretty cute.

The second incident was halfway through the movie. A little family of mom, dad, and 7-year old girl were sitting in the row in front of us. All of a sudden, I noticed these two people making their way down our aisle. I had my purse in the seat next to me and the little girl tried to sit there. She looked at me and said, “Are you my mom?” The dad pulled her away giggling and apologizing. We laughed heartily. And I adopted her this morning! Just kidding.

Also funny, my friend was convinced that Johnny Depp was in this movie. Although it was Post-Scissorhands, he was not in it.

Here is the Marilyn Manson version of “This is Halloween”, which is not only my favorite song from the movie, but my favorite Halloween song. The movie version is great, but this one is just a little bit twisted. Me likely.

Geek pumpkins galore!

Geek Pumpkin time! Basically just like me! Yeah!

But I digress, back to scary stuff...

4. They're just a good base to pile crap on.

LOL-Hobos come to life!

If you are aware of Laugh-Out-Loud Cats on Hobotopia, then this will be funny to you. But this year I didn't pull out the usual stops to make my costume. Luckily, a last-minute trip to Walgreens did at least score me a kick-ass pair of fake eyelashes, which usually makes the costume.

I went into the party with some idea of what I was, but pretty much waited until someone asked me if I was something and would just go with whatever they said. The first person asked if I was Mother Nature, but then everyone after went with some variation of wood nymph. So, that's what I'm sticking to.

Note the pointy ears. Not easy to put on. At least I had some crazy, ginormous hat to wear to balance them out.

The rest of my immediate family went as the Bevery Hillbillies and various cousins. My mother looked remarkably like Granny in her costume, which prompted her to eventually change back into her glamorous self after a couple of hours. I think the wig was giving her the willies.

Lovely wig.

What Jed Clampett/Dad served for dinner. Along with oil that is! Black gold! Texas tea!

I also attempted to make cupcakes that looked like mummies, but they ended up looking like I was just merely insane.

Happy Hauntings!
