Aloe is taking it to the streets
this month- to the Farmers Market to be more exact! If fresh, local edibles and
a stroll around Trout Lake in the sunshine isn’t enough to tempt you to the Vancouver Farmers Market this spring,
perhaps our mini garden workshops will do the trick. We are super excited to be hosting DIY
stations at the Trout Lake Market for the month of May/June, to teach parents
and kids how to grow food at home, support our native bee population, and
improve biodiversity. All you folks are invited to get your hands dirty and
learn about gardening while creating something special to take home. Even some
snazzy prizes to be had! Our design team will also be on hand to chat about
sustainable gardening methods and offer advice on incorporating kid- and
eco-friendly garden activities at home.

The Deets:

Cartoon Cress:

Learn how to make your very own
container using a toilet-paper roll covered in recycled comics. Plant up cress
and other quick-to-germinate edibles that offer near-instant gratification and
nicely demonstrate the “build, fill, plant, water, grow” process.

May 11, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.Trout Lake Farmers Market DIY
Station

Mason Bee Houses:

Mason bees are hard-working
native pollinators that increase biodiversity in your garden. Support their
population by building your own mason bee house. Assemble and take home a mason
bee house constructed from reclaimed wood. You will also learn how to make
nesting tubes out of recycled newspaper.

May 25, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.Trout Lake Farmers Market DIY
Station

Canned Food:

Get your tomato and basil
seedlings off to a good start by planting them in recycled cans. Decorate your
tins with crayons, paper, and glue, and learn how to transfer these delicate
starts into the garden when the plants are ready to grow wild.

Who: Tanya Mclean

Where: Vancouver BC

What: Mom, Designer and Owner of Mango Design Co

Believes: Peace, Love & The Slow Life

Q: How do you define good design?

A: Good design is enduring, is both current and timeless and
is thoughtful not only to the needs of the client today, but of future
generations. Good design to me is not overly designed, contrived or trendy…but
requires a lot of thought to make it look effortless.

Q: Describe your sense of style?

A: It’s the barefoot aesthetic…. natural, pure and
unpretentious. It’s romantic & nostalgic with a sense of the whimsical
& eclectic. It’s a bit raw, tousled and crumpled. It begs to be touched,
walked-on & lived in ‘cause it will only get better with age.

Q: Biggest eco challenge in being a designer?

A: Finding a balance between a passion for design and a
passion for the planet in an industry that is so waste intensive! In Vancouver,
the high price of real estate and inflated construction costs often cause eco-minded
folks to compromise their values to stay within budget. I believe in quality
over quantity, environmentally conscious products, local & independent over
mass-produced…but I don’t win every battle. I relish taking on my own
renovation so I can put myself in the same position as my clients… I wonder if
& where I would compromise?

Q: Travel destination of inspiration?

A: Travel inspires my life & my design philosophy in so
many ways. India inspired me to reduce my environmental impact. Bali encourages
art & ceremony in everyday life. The Greek Islands inspire serenity and a
calm colour palette. Most cultures (outside of NA) inspire the slow life and a
less is more attitude. But I live and design on the westcoast, so it’s raw,
natural beauty inspires most of my work.

Q: Dream commission?

A: A client has been tempting me with the design of a Balinese
/ midcentury modern home. I would do that out of pure love … and a year of
living barefoot in Indonesia.

Q: One trend we will never see you implement?

A: Ha, never say never! But you won’t likely see me
implementing too much bling or faux anything!! Ugh.

Q: Designer you most admire?

A: My hero has always been artist & architect, Antoni Gaudi.
Finally being amongst his masterpieces in Barcelona last fall was magical! Modern
day admiration goes to local architect Michael Green for his sense playful work
ethic and for pushing the envelope on the use of wood. And to local
architecture & design team, Battersby Howatt, whose homes embody my
westcoast dream.

Q: What are most of your clients looking for?

A: Most of my clients are young families living in fairly cramped
quarters by today’s standards. The house designs that worked for families 100
years ago don’t generally work for today’s informal & active family. We are
designing a lot of 2nd storey additions, tearing down interior walls
to create bright open spaces, and designing clever custom millwork to keep clutter
under control.

Q: Boldest design move you’ve ever made?

A: A complete overhaul of a 2400 sqft condo at the Shangri La
last summer. My client wanted ‘awesome’ and mentioned the designer Marcel
Wanders, whom I’ve come to admire for his ‘exuberant creativity’. Marcel is
able to combine traditional & modern, feminine & masculine in a
whimsical and unmatchable manner. The bold design was outside of my usual
comfort zone & was definitely a bit nerve-wracking to implement, but mango
delivered awesomeness!

Q: Every home should have?

A: HEART! most of my favourite homes wouldn’t get a spread in any design mag but they’ve got personality because they’re loved. Cheesy, I know ;) Unfortunately, we live in a city where houses are often viewed as money makers, not homes. The same type of love isn’t put into a design/renovation when profit is in mind.
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NestingJournal/~4/Uz2lD7GZzzc" height="1" width="1" />

I wanted to share the amazing list of reads our bookclub has explored over the last 5 years. Since our first meeting we knew we were up to something special. We have evolved so much from the early days in our late twenties; from changes in careers, to weddings and marriages, to births and babies.

We meet once every six weeks. We laugh. We cry (rarely and usually from laughing so hard). We feast. We drink. And we discuss. All of our homes are such a treat to nestle into. And none of us are all from the same circle of friends. This in part makes it work so well, I think. Over the years we have read countless books (see above). Each evoking its own set of questions and discussions. If you asked me my favourite it would be next to impossible to pick. Oddly enough our most intimate meeting was over Eat Pray Love, on a gorgeous summer night with lots of white wine, and an amazing summer feast. Every book choice has been special in its own way. Not everyone likes them, but that is part of the charm.

Whenever I walk by homes with lit windows, the warmth of a room full of ladies sharing the intimacy of books, I feel so very honored and loved to be a part of such a dynamic group of young ladies. So thank you: Chloe, Nikki, Regina, Daisy, Racheal, Kari, Kate, Sarah, Steph and Mag for making my life so much fuller.
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NestingJournal/~4/R060UYjGfqM" height="1" width="1" />

Looking back to last year's, I cant believe how much our wee's have grown, and how much warmer this easters festivities were. It was a lovely morning full of catch up, laughter, amazing food and sunshine. Thanks good pals- nix, ben, reg and james for making our easter egg hunts so fun!

Thank goodness for the grandparents on all accounts- but especially when they spring you with: "were thinkin of renting a villa in kauaii and would love to bring you guys along". Dead of winter. Sunshine. Maitai's. Blue water. Kinda broke. Free babysitting. Solo day at the spa. Golfin fo rthe boys. Quality time with the fam. YES PLEASE!

Even though it is has been the furthest thing from a slow winter for work, it was so nice to get away into flipflops and skimpies. It was our first adventure on an airplane with a toddler, aside from quick jaunts to california. 2 yr olds and connecting flights aren't the funnest thing. But once you get to the beach it all washes away. Thank you mom and dad for such an amazing getaway to paradise.

Who: Talia & Lawrence Erickson

Where: 950 West Broadway,
Vancouver BC

What: Budding Children’s Garden
& Daycare

Believes: Modern families need
flexible accessible childcare.

Q: Buddings is an ingenious concept for parents who
need flexible daycare, where and how did you come about launching this?

A: We were hoping to find something that would
cover us for the week a month when Lawrence’s son was staying with us. We wanted to have something lined up for the occasions when
our flexible work schedule just couldn’t bend. When we realized there was absolutely
nothing like that, first we wondered “Why not?” and then we decided to put it
together ourselves!

Q: What sets Buddings apart from other daycares in
the city and what would you say is its most unique quality of care?

A: We’re the only centre in the city that lets
families decide what hours they need, flexibly. Our website is super easy to
use and you can book your time with as little as one hour’s notice.

Plus, since we can accommodate the part-time needs of almost
100 families at a time, we see less separation anxiety, more potty training,
and more skill development than any other centre. We’re in a position to help
parents with all of that, and our blog and website keep families up to date
with everything we do.

Q: Buddings has just recently launched a preschool
too (we couldn’t be more stoked on this combo!) tell us about this concept?

A: We strongly believe that kids learn best
through play, but we also know the education system is about structure. Our
preschooler’s program combines them both, and strives to be convenient for
parents as well!

It runs from 1 - 4pm and introduces literacy, mathematical
concepts, artistic expression and opportunities for experiential learning in a
fun and flowing routine. Parents commit to bringing their kids at least twice a
week, and get 4 additional hours of flexible care that they can schedule
anytime, so it’s the best of both.

Q: Your business model focuses on sustainability in
many aspects of what you do, what are the challenges that small businesses face
when this is an integral part of what you are about?

A: Sustainability is a major priority for us,
especially because we know we’re shaping the minds and bodies of the next
generation! Luckily, it’s an easy goal to live up to at Buddings, and it’s
actually saved us a tonne of time and money. We are super open-minded, and always looking for
ways to reduce, reuse and recycle EVERYTHING, which is why our web-based admin
and communication systems are virtually paperless and at least half the
furniture is upcycled.

Q: Being partners in life and in work has its sets of
challenges and benefits (this we know!). What would you say have been the ups
and downs for you guys?

A: Hahaha...

Ups: How fun is it to find someone you want to spend all
your time with, and then... you do! We are super-compatible,
largely because we’re very different, and between the two of us, we can cover
almost every angle. In work and in life.

Downs: Starting a business is so much work. When it gets
stressful, we’re both stressed. We’re both 100% devoted to it, and if we’re not
careful, we can work all day, talk about work all evening, and then dream about
work all night.

Q: You guys are big into biking and getting
parents& kids involved in this style of commuting about town. What would
you say are some key “must haves” to make this a doable, enjoyable experience
for families?

A: Kids love bikes. Share that with them, and
remember it yourself. A rear-mount kids’ seat makes everyday riding a breeze.
There are so many bike routes that have little or no traffic, and riding on
them is easy, safe, and super fun. Get yourself a bike map for the city, strap
a helmet on your child and have a blast.

Q: What are some of the best lunch ideas you’ve seen
parents pack for their wee ones?

A: The kids have awesome lunches. The best ones
have a large variety of healthy foods. We learned to trust
that kids know how much to eat. As long as all the options are healthy, as much
or as little as they want is right for them.

Q: What is the best advice you have out there for the
working moms and dads trying to balance it all?

A: You are doing an amazing job! Don’t forget
how awesome you are. Your kids adore you and you deserve it.

Q: What are some of your favourite diy games/toys
that kids and parents can do at home on a minimal budget?

A: Bubbles, sorting things into egg cartons,
decorating clothes pins and doing puppet shows, making forts, making Playdoh
with Kool-aid, colouring with crayons. Set up a fish tank.

Q: Quirkiest thing a kid has said to you while at
work?

A: The kids say the most hilarious things every
single day. The ones that stick with me are the ones that demonstrate their
independence and personality. And, yes, Moms and Dads, they sound just like
you!

Me: "The snack today is rice and chili. Would you like some
of that?"

26 month old: "I would like rice, but actually, I don’t want
chili. I just want rice."
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NestingJournal/~4/U-9w2rE7F88" height="1" width="1" />

I hope it is full of lots of love, fresh flowers, a bit too much chocolate and an extra glass of red wine. We are planning on hitting up an amazing fundraiser that is happening in gastown, by our friend Kelly Deck, called The Love Umbrella Project. For more info check it out in a nutshell here.

Luce and I got a bit festive this past week making these little bits for all her buds. An easy craft project to spread the love to all the wee's in our life.

Get an assortment of pink/red felts. Cut out hearts.

Its been ages since I last wrote. To those who often pop in, I'm sorry. After cruisin online and catching up with other bloggers it seems to be a january trend- neglect thy blog posts! What is it about January? It either flies by with busyness that is hard to quantify or moves at a snails beat whilst sick in bed!

We have been busy at aloe learning a new crm program that is mind blowing and time sucking all in the same breath. Good things, exicting things in the works for 2013 though. In addition a blog post line up for the year- more home grown hero's, more home tours and all that other fun stuff. Starting next week you will see more posts- a weekly frequency is the goal, I promise. So until then, I leave you with this picture I came across the other day online. I love how happy these folks look with animals draped over their shoulders and pure countryside all around, in the dead of winter.
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NestingJournal/~4/Ul786e_Q0XY" height="1" width="1" />

No longer a bebe- we have officially entered toddlers-ville! O and I decided that until she becomes a teenager or expects more we would try to make her gifts for her bdays. Here is a little peak at what Owen and I made for her last year.

We got given these beautiful handmade puppets from our super creative family friends aka puppeteers that live in barcelona (yes this is their official profession!). O thought it would be neat to make some sort of stand for these guys to sit on. Out of a reclaimed piece of wood he carved up this puppet stand:

I came across the idea of making Lucie a growth chart. I happened to have all of these items in my craft cupboard, so it was a real easy rainy day project.

Where: Vancouver BC

What: Mom & Mixed media artist

Believes: Simplicity, DIY, the blending of natural and urban.

Q: Where do you go for inspiration?

A: My top spots for inspiration are big cities with lots of galleries
and streets to explore, as well as tiny remote areas with many a rock and leaf to turn
over.

Q: I love your new series of large
works. How would you say these connect to west coast landscape?

A: All of the new works are inspired by recent West Coast trips. They
include places like Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands), Tofino, Comox,
Quadra Island, Jericho Beach, English Bay. I have a different connection to each
of these places and I try to recreate the feeling that I had when I was
standing and looking at the sea or a tree or the sky. Sometimes it is just the
memory of being in a certain place or frame of mind that inspires me to start
painting.

Q: What’s been the hardest part
about getting started as an artist?

A: One of the hardest things is to have to confidence to put your work
out there to be judged by the public. I suppose it is the fear of failure
and rejection. At a certain point you just have to put your armour on and
get out there.

Q: You are in the east side culture crawl each year.
What do you love about it and what do you hate?

A: The best part and worst part about the crawl is the direct feedback
that you get from all of the viewers. While it is amazing to have
thousands of people come through your studio over three days, it is sometimes
overwhelming to hear everyone's opinion on something so personal that you have
been working so hard to create. That said, after participating in the
crawl (I've done 12 so far) I always feel very supported and encouraged.

Q: Dream commission?

A: It has been my dream to travel to Japan to live and work on mixed
media paintings. I am curious to see how my Japanese Canadian heritage
would blend with native Japanese culture. I am also fascinated by the
fine craft and design found in Japan and would love to study more traditional
techniques like ceramics, printmaking or woodcarving.

Q: Favourite museum/gallery
anywhere in the world and why?

A: I have so many favourites but two of my go-tos would be the MOMA and
Guggenheim in NYC. Not only do you get to see fabulous artists and
amazing architecture but you also get to feed off the energy found in the city.
I find this is a place that always makes me feel encouraged to try
something different.

Q: Best art documentary you've seen
to date?

A: Exit through the gift shop – Banksy’s film about street art.

Q: When not painting you are?

A: Taking photos, looking at art, dreaming of new
adventures, hanging with my hubby and my daughter Scarlett and rubbing my
baby bump.

Q: What keeps you up at night?

A: Mommy stuff and to do lists.

Q: My mom was right about?

A: "Everything in moderation, including moderation"
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NestingJournal/~4/nJCoVX4ur9c" height="1" width="1" />

Q: Wildebeest is a great name, how did you come up with this?

A: My son said the word when I asked him what his favourite animal was one day. I visualized the word and loved it, texted it to Josh and he confirmed it was the one.

Q: If you could use 3 words to describe Wildebeest they would be?

A: Honest, brave, delicious.

Q: Your chef David Gunawan is working closely with the local farmers/purveyors, what are some of the unusual veggies you are commissioning to serve?

A: We take quality over the unusual but have worked with some uncommon ones already. Kohlrabi, celeriac, and parsley root come to mind, all of which are delicious.

Q: I love this idea that you even have wine on tap, whats the story behind this?

A: It's a brilliant way to serve wine meant to be enjoyed young. It avoids bottle shock, bottle variance, and is much better for the environment than bottles, labels, and corks. It works like a keg, and I feel this current trend is just the beginning, and we're proud to be a leader in the movement.

Q: What is the biggest challenge of being a restaurant owner?

A: Building a great restaurant is demanding to the point that maintaining balance in your life is always the hardest part.

Q: Best business advice you have ever received?

A: Without being too specific, a friend told me once to never be afraid of making difficult decisions, even if they affect others. Consider all points and views, be thoughtful and calm, then act with purpose.

Q: How do you define a well designed restaurant?

A: One that works as well logistically as it looks.

Q: Your favorite restaurant of all time?

A: An impossible question. Some I love for the memories they conjure, some for their courage, others for design or service, too many for their food. I have yet to find one that satisfies all such criteria, but then that's what I remain motivated to create.

Q: Food buzzwords you hate?

A: "Foodie", "gourmet", most buzzwords really. Too often they're about salesmanship and not the proper craft and care of what it is we do.

Q: Your last meal would be what, where and with whom?

A: That would depend on when it's my time to go, but it would be at home with my family for sure.

Thanksgiving seems early this year- no? I am still in my flip flops, still drinking the sunshine, and still harvesting a bunch of summer veg from the garden. This is always a special holiday though. I love that our family has such a set tradition with the dishes my mom creates and serves. Always so incredibly yummy. Always waddling home to bed more full then I thought humanly possible. And always thankful for the warm company that surrounds us at the table.

This year I am thankful for:

My man O and his love that fills my days.

The sweet squeaky voice of my lil Lucie.

The unconditional support of our parents.

The unspoken understanding among all my best girlfriends.

The creative career that still maniages to inspire me.

The roof above our head and the coziness that is home.

The dream that travel, will always be in our future.
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/NestingJournal/~4/e2PiKy2uSoY" height="1" width="1" />
