When you put anything on your skin; cleanser, toner, moisturiser, fake tan, face mask, makeup… these products will seep through the pores on your skin into your bloodstream. Even if you wash the product off (e.g. a cleanser) the chemicals are so small they’ll just soak right into your pores fast.So whatever you put on your skin will end up in your bloodstream, and if you’re putting products that contain synthetic chemicals (toxins) on your skin, you body will have to deal with these toxins and somehow process them and eliminate them. And the more toxins your body has, the more overloaded it can get and the more likely toxins will have to be eliminated through the skin resulting in more acne!

So in the end putting chemicals on your skin really doesn’t help your situation. Although these products can sometimes appear to temporarily help with your skin on the surface, in the long run they may just be hurting you. So why not try to find products that use natural ingredients that don’t strip your skin or make it red and dry, don’t give your body more toxins, yet still give you really good results? Try looking for brands that are natural and organic.

The best thing to do is to switch to products that do not completely strip off this natural oil, but does get rid of any excess acne-causing oil and dead skin cells. If your skin products make your face feel tight and dry, I suggest you stop using them.

I think the only chemical product I would cautiously recommend for severe acne is using Benzoyl Peroxide just as a spot treatment on really bad pimples. Try to use it extremely sparingly as it will dry out your skin. However a really good alternative is medicinal honey as a spot treatment, so try to use this as much as you can instead, and only use BP on really bad spots and eventually wean yourself off it completely.
Use Simple, Natural, Organic Skincare Products. Try to use simple products, plants, and foods from nature to heal your acne and skin. I can honestly say that after trying dozens of popular commercial products, it’s actually simple, natural things like honey and aloe vera that have worked so much better on my severe acne. Don’t underestimate the power of nature; you’ll be surprised by the results. Not to mention it’s much cheaper!

Look for natural, organic acne products from stores and make sure that when you look at the ingredients on the back, that you are able to recognize all of the ingredients and that there are no crazy synthetic chemicals that you don’t understand. Also, there are a lot of plants and items that are very healing for acne that you can often find out in your garden or in your kitchen. I’ll be covering more on those and how to create and apply your own home remedies using natural ingredients.
Avoid Moisturizing at Night. Give your skin a chance to rest, breathe, and regulate its own oil production without interference from heavy night creams. Give your skin a chance to balance its own self out.
Use Oil On Your Skin. This may seem counter intuitive but it really does help. Acne sufferers have overactive skin and produce too much oil (sebum). The theory goes that by putting plant oils such as Jojoba oil on your face during the day, your skin will feel moisturized and sense that it doesn’t need to produce as much oil because your skin’s already got enough. It can also also help to dissolve blocked pores because ‘like dissolves like’ and the oil can dissolve the clogged oil in your pores. A great example of this is the ‘Oil Cleanse Method’ which I’ll cover in a another post. I can honestly say that this has helped a lot for me.
Don’t Change Your Skincare Routine Too Often and Keep It Simple. If you change your routine too much and use too many different products on your face, your skin will start to freak out. Remember your skin is an organ and it has to adjust to these new products and ingredients. It could freak out so much that it could even lead to a break out. So keep it simple and stick to just a handful of very high quality natural products. Just a good quality cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and spot treatment. Then occasionally use masks, exfoliants, and special treatments.
Don’t Overwash Your Face. Overwashing will cause the acid mantle on your skin to disintegrate and can lead to more breakouts and red, dry skin. Cleanse and tone twice a day and moisturize once in the morning for throughout the day. Exfoliate once a week, twice at the most. Even though you may feel like really, really washing your face more than that, it will actually make it worse so please try not to.
Be Gentle To Your Skin and Give It Love. This may sound a bit funny but it really does pay to be gentle with your skincare routine. Your skin does know what its doing and you’ve got acne because your skin is doing a good job and ridding your body of toxins. While you work on healing your acne from the inside out and fixing up your internal problems and imbalances that are causing your acne, treat your skin on the outside with care and give it time to heal itself naturally. Don’t scrutinize yourself in the mirror and beat yourself up about every little spot, this will only make you feel worse. But the 54-year-old father of three faced a crisis last year when diagnosed with life-threatening head and neck cancer.

The insurance industry, with its fondness for advertisements portraying terrible diseases and disasters, is indeed relentless in pursuit of new sales. The more policies that insurers sell (and the fewer claims they pay out on), the more they profit.
But would it really be sensible to take Baker’s line and shun cover altogether? Financial Mail examines the odds and looks at just how likely disaster is to strike.
CRITICAL ILLNESS COVER
The chances of a 35-year-old man being struck down with a critical illness before 65 are one in seven while for a woman it is one in eight, according to the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
Critical illness cover is sold separately from life insurance and designed to pay a lump sum on diagnosis of a life-threatening illness, such as cancer, heart attack or multiple sclerosis.
The cover has been marred by numerous cases where claims were rejected, although insurers have improved to some extent. At present, one in ten claims is thrown out. Only 15 per cent of adults have this cover, with cost being one reason for low take-up.
A 34-year-old non-smoking man would pay £9.39 a month for £50,000 of cover for 20 years with Scottish Provident.
At age 44 it would be £19.63 a month for the same cover, while at 54 it would be £51.52 a month. These quotes are for cover that decreases over the 20-year term because it is usually sold alongside a mortgage.
Jennifer Gilchrist of Scottish Provident, says: ‘Although it is just a small minority that claim, people do need to consider how they would survive the onset of an illness – who will pay the mortgage? It gives peace of mind.’
Scottish Provident paid out an average of £82,000 last year to 1,100 claimants with an average age of 47. But it would not reveal the number of customers that did not claim.
INCOME PROTECTION INSURANCE
There is a one in 16 chance of being off work for six months or more due to sickness or disability, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Income protection is taken out by only one in ten people. Unlike critical illness cover, it pays an income every month until you are back on your feet.
Premiums vary hugely, depending on age, health profile and provider, while the payout also depends on job type and when benefits kick in.
Incapacity benefit has been scrapped for new claimants. Under the replacement, Employment and Support Allowance, claimants can get up to £100 a week depending on their circumstances.
Private income protection of £1,500 a month for 30 years for a non-smoking 35-year-old male office worker costs £24.73 a month with Legal & General.
For a 35-year-old woman it is significantly higher at £41.40. Payments kick in after three months.
MOTOR INSURANCE
The chance of your life ending in a car crash is one in 200 but the chance of being in a motoring accident in your lifetime is one in four.
The cost of third party, fire and theft cover is an average £971.40 a year and this insurance is the minimum legal requirement.
In the year to the end of last September there were 204,350 motor accidents in which vehicles were damaged and people injured. Of these, 1,900 ended with a fatality.
Ian Crowder of the AA says: ‘The odds are against you getting involved in an accident, with Britain’s roads being among the world’s safest. The most dangerous place for fatal injuries is rural, winding lanes,’ he says.
Collisions are more likely in urban areas.

HOME INSURANCE
There's is a one in ten chance you will be burgled, suffer accidental damage or have other reasons to claim.
There are two types of home policies – buildings and contents. Although they can be taken out separately, they are often taken out jointly.
The average buildings policy is £171 a year while contents is £140, according to the Home Office. However, prices vary hugely depending on the property, what you own and where you live.
Homebuyers must usually have buildings insurance to get a mortgage. About 76 per cent of households have contents insurance and 64 per cent have buildings insurance.
The rest of households, it appears, are ‘self-insuring’ – choosing to take the risk of the loss on themselves.
According to the Association of British Insurers, 19.7 million households have contents insurance and 16.6 million have building insurance. Across both types of cover, 2.1 million claims were made last year. The average claim was £1,500.
Translator Penny Langton, 42, from Clapham, south London, thought that her insurance would pay out when she lost her £150 ski boots during a trip to the French Alps.
However, neither her home cover with Endsleigh nor travel insurance with NatWest would pay up, with both companies claiming she had failed to get the necessary police report within 24 hours.
Penny, who is married and has two children, Dan, 11, and Amy, 8, says: ‘I was told to wait until the boots turned up and did not want to waste police time. However, I knew the insurers would need a police report so still made the effort, but only when it was clear the boots were never going to arrive.’
Afterwards, Penny cancelled her NatWest Gold Card, which cost her £5 a month and which had included the travel insurance.
LIFE INSURANCE
Everyone dies, but that does not mean that everyone claims on life insurance, or needs it.
Term insurance, which will pay out if the policyholder dies within a set period, is the most popular and common form of life cover.
It is the sort most likely to be sold alongside a mortgage. One in 20 term policies results in a claim.
In the other 19 out of 20 cases, policyholders outlive the term and get nothing. The average payout is £130,000 on yearly premiums of £919, according to the ABI.

Rather than pay for fully comprehensive insurance, Jane, 37, took out only the legal requirement of third-party, fire and theft cover for her ten-year-old Nissan Micra.
She and her partner, Lee Hatcher, 44, a coach driver, share their three-bedroom rented home with their son, Robbie, 10.
Jane, from Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, says: ‘I didn’t see the need for fully comprehensive cover as although the car is reliable and great for the school run and shopping trips, it is only worth about £200. I was being quoted at least £400 for fully comprehensive insurance, but why should I pay out more on insurance than the car is even worth?’
Jane found a third-party, fire and theft insurance deal with the AA last September for which she now pays £212.32 a year.
However, Jane does not have either building or contents, life insurance or any form of critical illness cover. ‘The cost of everything is rising, including insurance premiums,’ she says.
‘It is something that occasionally makes me worry, but to be honest the expense of paying for all that peace of mind does not seem worth it.
‘We have other daily costs that must be met first.’

Six months later, in April 2010, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
But after surgery and chemotherapy, Letitia was told the following October that there was ‘no residual disease’.
She says: ‘You never think it is going to happen to you.
‘As strange as it may seem, I felt I would have been tempting fate to take out critical illness or income protection cover. Now I wish that I had.’
Letitia, who is separated and has a 23-year-old daughter, declined the offer of a £12 monthly WellWoman Plan, which covers against seven cancers, from Chartis Insurance. If she had taken the deal, it would have paid out a £25,000 lump sum.
‘Fortunately as a teacher I got six months of leave on full pay, but the money would have been fantastic with transport and recuperation costs,’ she says.
Letitia, from Woodford Green, north-east London, was also shocked to discover that her travel insurance with M&S Money was cancelled because of the cancer.
She says: ‘It felt like discrimination. Even though the doctor gave me the all-clear, no travel insurance companies wanted to touch me.’
Letitia eventually found cover through Insurancewith, a specialist travel insurer, but she had to pay £600 for three weeks of cover in America last November.

Why Susan Boyle Makes People Cry

Several patients - both women and men - have told me about the moving success story of [Britain‘s Got Talent singer] Susan Boyle with tears pouring down their cheeks. As one patient put it, "I’ve spent most of my life trying to be so good, to do the right thing, to be perfect and it’s been such a waste of time, a waste of life.

“Susan Boyle has broken through all that stuff and has gone ahead and done what she’s wanted to do. She doesn’t have to be somebody she’s not.”

Max Clifford, the publicist, points out that the “magical moments which we as a nation love” are those that challenge our assumptions and prejudices. Boyle has challenged the stereotype of what it takes to be a successful woman – Cinderella has not been transformed into a Princess, she has been a Princess all along, but without the material trappings of one.

A dumpy, 47-year-old Scottish singleton, Boyle is the epitome of an old maid “I dreamed a dream in time gone by, when hope was high and life worth living.” These are the opening – and extraordinarily apt – lyrics of Susan Boyle’s astonishing and unexpected rave performance last week on Britain’s Got Talent.

A dumpy, 47-year-old single Scottish woman, Boyle is the epitome of the old maid who has long gone past her sell by date. She lives alone with her cat, Pebbles, openly professes that she has never been kissed, is unemployed and has spent most of her adult life doing charitable work and, more recently, caring for her mother who died in 2007.

The youngest of nine children, Boyle developed learning difficulties as a result of being deprived of oxygen at her birth. She was bullied throughout her childhood by other children, although very much protected within her family. Music had always been important in the family and Boyle grew up singing and never stopped.

She has sung in small theatrical productions, in the church choir and is well known in the local karaoke circuit. But she was going nowhere with her career. Her mother had first suggested that she should audition for Britain’s Got Talent following the success of Paul Potts and it was perhaps her mother’s belief in her that played an important part in helping Boyle’s dream coming true.

Boyle made it clear when she first appeared on stage that “I’ve always wanted to perform in front of a large audience.” She was sassy and uninhibited, while at the same time maintaining her professional cool. She was doing something she had always wanted to do and she was giving it her best. After her success, she said she felt “quietly confident” and when asked about her future, said emphatically that these were “baby steps” and it was just the beginning. Boyle remains modest and realistic, commenting on the mistakes she made in her performance that she needs to learn from.

In psychoanalytic terms, Boyle’s performance highlights the difference between the ego ideal and the superego. The Austrian psychoanalyst, Annie Reich, explains, “The ego ideal represents what one wishes to be, the superego what one ought to be.”

The ego ideal is initially based on an idealised image of the parents that the child internalises and that is gradually modified as the child grows and incorporates other characteristics from his environment that form a model to aspire to. In healthy development the superego tempers these aspirations by reminding the ego of its limitations – it keeps the ego grounded.

When there is a disturbance in the child’s early relationships and the child does not have a good sense of himself and of being loved, this can impair the development of a strong ego and the child may become susceptible to a megalomanic ego ideal along with a demanding and punitive superego.

The child attributes the fact that he is not loved to his failure to fulfill the parents’ wishes of who they want him to be. These are the conditions in which an ego ideal is imposed from without. The child does not aspire to an image that is a mixture of his good feelings about himself and his idealisation of his parents; instead the child identifies with and strives for an image of who he ought to be because he feels he has in some way failed to obtain his parents’ love. Inevitably this is an image of perfection that is unattainable and the harsh superego will settle for nothing less.

The cult of the celebrity is today’s primary example of an ego ideal imposed from without and it has an utterly crippling effect on ordinary development. What is so moving about Boyle’s trajectory of success is that she demonstrates the victory of the ego ideal that is genuinely based on “what one wishes to be” as opposed to an imposed ideal from the outside that is predicated on “what one ought to be”.

There is a difference between wanting to perform in front of a large audience and wanting to be a celebrity. Boyle’s success is not that she has been a victim who has vanquished her enemies, but that she has the courage to be herself. We cry because we see in her the seeds of our own liberation.

Arizona, Nevada Sue Bank of America Over Mortgage Fraud While Treasury Sits on Its Hands

The Administration’s po-faced insincerity on the mortgage crisis front is wearing thin now that other authorities are taking action against the worst abuses.

Yesterday, we had the sorry spectacle of Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, under questioning by Congressional Oversight Panel commissioner Damon Silvers, maintain that the Treasury really had very little power to require banks to engage in certain types of behavior under the Treasury mortgage modification program, HAMP (see the testimony starting at 101). Silvers made it quite clear that he did not buy Geithner’s claim. If you think I am reading more into Geithner’s response than is warranted, he had a longer form discussion with a small group of bloggers last August and made a similar argument when asked why Treasury had done nothing when servicers were clearly gaming HAMP. I pointed out that there was a big difference between narrow authority and broad authority, and pointed out that Treasury had lots of leverage over banks, starting with REMIC violations. He pointedly ignored the REMIC issue.

So we now have the spectacle of two state attorney generals who see mortgage modification abuses large and persistent enough to warrant filing lawsuits against Bank of America. And both their press releases and media reports on the lawsuits (sadly, the filings themselves do not yet appear to be online) make clear that some of the alleged violations took place in connection with HAMP.

So why is Treasury playing what amounts to “see almost no evil, hear almost no evil, see almost no evil” as far as HAMP in particular and banks in general are concerned?

Geithner does acknowledge problems, then either plays them down or says that they are the result of other factors. For instance, the latest argument from the officialdom is that the high level of foreclosures is to a significant degree due to high unemployment. While that is narrowly accurate, it’s also terribly convenient. It alleviates regulators like the Treasury of the obligation of looking how much servicer abuses such as erroneous application of payments and pyramiding junk fees are contributing to foreclosures. Similarly, high foreclosure rates also contribute to high unemployment. Foreclosures, particularly ones that could be avoided by doing a principal mod with a viable borrower, depress housing prices. Low and potentially falling housing prices impede housing sales generally, making it hard for homeowners to move if they get a job in another city. And a weak housing market has a general economy-depressing effect, which affects the job market. In other words, the causal link between unemployment and foreclosures is not one way.

So with Treasury having more than a bit of egg on its face with HAMP, with getting tough on banks a popular move, with the Administration in desperate need of courses of action to help boost the economy that don’t require budgetary approval from the tight-fisted incoming Republicans in Congress, you’d think reining in the worst servicer abuses would be a no-brainer. Pick on the worst outliers, hope the rest of the industry gets the message, and if not, engage in another round of public executions. But that strategy would require a bit of backbone, a quality sorely lacking in the Obama Administration.

The lawsuits against Bank of America and its affiliates make a mockery of Treasury’s passivity. They are broadly similar, both the result of investigations spurred by borrower complaints. The Arizona litigation, filed by Terry Goddard, charges Bank of America with consumer fraud as well as violation of a consent decree entered into in March 2009. The Nevada suit focuses on alleged deceptive practices in mortgage servicing, particularly in mortgage mods and foreclosures.

The statement of the Arizona AG Goddard says that the lawsuit seeks “restitution to eligible consumers and civil penalties, attorneys’ fees, and costs of investigation to the State” as well as fines of as much as $25,000 for each violation of the 2009 consent decree and up to $10,000 per violation of the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act.

Both suits include a litany of complaints heard throughout the HAMP process: homeowners told they had to default when in fact current borrowers were eligible; borrowers under consideration for mods advised that their house would not be foreclosed upon when BofA was moving forward with the foreclosure process; falsely promising to take action on mod applications within a specific time period; telling consumers that their mods would be made permanent if they successfully completed the trial period, then denying the permanent mod and giving deceptive reasons for the turndown; incorrectly informing credit bureaus that borrowers had defaulted; engaging in bait and switch on mod terms.

The language in the press release was scathing: “misleading and deceiving consumers…callous disregard…truly egregious”.

The New York Times story on the suits points out that the Arizona attorney general Goddard’s term ends in January. The parallel filings, in two neighboring states that have among the highest foreclosure rates in the nation, will hopefully make it hard for his successor to back down (how can an incoming AG retreat from a case if the one in Nevada moves forward and garners favorable press? While AGs can and do kowtow to bankers, it will be harder to do so with the lights turned up this high).

These lawsuits also serve to keep pressure on Iowa attorney general Tom Miller, who is leading the 50 state AG probe. Although Bank of America may turn out to be the worst actor, newspaper reports on HAMP abuses have reported of similar dubious conduct by other major servicers, suggesting that additional banks should also be targeted once the litigation strategy is perfected on Bank of America.

Despite Miller’s assurance that his group will seek criminal indictments where warranted, it isn’t clear that MIller will be aggressive. I was concerned when I heard him speak positively about his dealing with Michael Barr of Treasury in the first Senate Banking Committee hearings on foreclosure abuses (as in it seemed sincere rather than pro forma). Those concerns have been further stoked by reports that Miller has said privately that he does not think the fraud is serious and he anticipates everything will be worked out.

Action on the state level is the best hope to rein in banking industry abuses. Hopefully observers will recognize that the actions of the Nevada and Arizona state attorneys general make a mockery of the Treasury’s failure to seek redress and will also set a benchmark for possible measures against other banks.
