		<title><![CDATA[Vehicle Mounted Modems for Mobile Wireless Connectivity]]></title>

Basically it covers the details of a vehicle mounted modem and it's ability to handle high bandwidth applications. <BR><BR><?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p></SPAN>
<P>Although&nbsp;the article is just a product highlight, I still get excited when I fathom broadband availability in my car, on the train, bus or any other mode of transportation. I am a proponent of Broadband any and every where! Thinking about this product stirred up some consideration for applications that would naturally follow a high speed link into the every day car.</P>I really&nbsp;look forward to the day we don't have to pay cell phone bills because we no longer have to connect to the telephone exchange to communicate with the masses. If you&nbsp;are like me, you have&nbsp;WiFi at work, at home, at the restaurant, at many public centers, but not in the car... and where would a WiFi phone come in handy?&nbsp;I feel once broad band is&nbsp;common place, IP will push&nbsp;cellular to the way side and allow for unified communications on the go.&nbsp;I also&nbsp;imagine the&nbsp;future of&nbsp;personal transportation&nbsp;when&nbsp;map quest interacts with my GPS to give directions, and&nbsp;Tom Tom will read my&nbsp;Gmail.&nbsp;I will twitter about my traffic frustrations at stop lights (some speech recognition software required). I will be able to access a million internet radio stations on the go,&nbsp;and&nbsp;all&nbsp;this while I&nbsp;simultaneously receive updated coordinates of my daughter’s real time location.

<P>The technology is there, however we still need someone to cover the bill. Lining our high ways and city streets with access points is a huge investment and I don’t think the ROI is there yet. I think for now, products like the Vehicle mounted modem, will be used for very specific applications on private networks. However, in the not so distant future, I think we will see this type of technology start to integrate and become as standard as power windows. What do you think? </P>

		<description><![CDATA[<P></IMG>If you've been hearing rumors for the past year about SkyPilot - hope you didn't miss the <A href="http://www.skypilot.com/newsevents/pr/trilliant_acquires_skypilot.php">announcement on May 28th that SkyPilot has been acquired by Trilliant Incorporated</A>&nbsp;- self described as the 'leader in delivering Smart Grid solutions that enhance energy efficiency, utility operations and renewal resource integration'.</P>
<P>Spoke with my distribution rep, and they're saying that SkyPilot units will begin shipping in about a month, and if I get any updates on when the products will be moving again, I'll post it.</P>
<P>BTW - the snowglob pix below&nbsp;is one of the best that I've ever seen that describes a product line and what it does...so if you aren't exactly sure what SkyPilot is all about - just check it out.&nbsp; Also - we developed a few solution pages on SkyPilot some time back - you can still get them <A href="http://www.netlinkweb.com/solutions/ShowSolution.asp?sk=39&amp;ck=34">here</A>.</P>

		<description><![CDATA[<P>I read an Article in our local newspaper a few days ago about counterfeit Cisco. This prompted me to Google (I know it's not really a verb right) the topic and a ton of articles are out there. I read a few and it seems that the two most common ways Cisco gear is counterfeited is&nbsp;a 'look-alike' gimmick. Also, another common way seems to be over production with duplicate serial numbers. I found these articles interesting... and maybe you will too. </P>
<P>Here is a picture of the "Andover Test" that I saw out there, and a few points on how to spot a fraud.</P>

		<description><![CDATA[<P>I wrote a post yesterday describing the 1544 that just began shipping last week, and although I won't win a pulitizer prize for writing this piece, I thought I would follow it up with some Adtran 1534 verbiage. There are two skus and of course&nbsp;I followed them with the basics below. </P>
<P>The main difference between the NetVanta 1544 and the 1534 are the number of SFP slots, the later has&nbsp;two and the former has&nbsp;a total of four.&nbsp;Look for a post in the near future with switch comparisons or something along those lines.</P>

The 1534 did come before the 1544, but it was a layer&nbsp;2 switch and it only&nbsp;had&nbsp;2 SFP slots. I copied and pasted&nbsp;some specs for the 1544; and I also threw the general skus down along side the street price. <P>OK, so the first post I created was about the pieces you need to assemble an MX2800 System.&nbsp; I realized about halfway through that post that I wanted to include a lot more detail on the specific pieces, so I decided to give the basic assembly info in the first one and then get a bit deeper in this second post.&nbsp; As noted in the first post, there are three core peices that make up the MX2800.&nbsp; However, beyond just the current SKUs, there is a little bit of knowledge that comes in handy when buying, selling or implementing a solution.&nbsp; Let me show you what I'm talking about.</P>

<P>All the part numbers for individual pieces of the MX2800 have changed slightly except for the chassis.&nbsp; It still has the same part number it was given when the MX2800 was first introduced.&nbsp; I can't think of any notable changes over the years except for a few screws here and there.&nbsp; The one really noticeable thing that has been introduced is the fan faceplate.&nbsp; The chassis ships with a standard faceplate, however if you start stacking multiple units together you do need a fan that can cool the insides down.&nbsp; The fan faceplate (1202289L1) is a part ordered separate from the chassis.&nbsp; It is the same as the normal face plate that ships with the chassis except it is modified with a small vent cut out and a fan attached on the inner facing side.&nbsp; Replacement fans (1200466L1) can be ordered as well.</P>
<P><STRONG>Controller Cards</STRONG></P>
<P>The controller cards' current model has two part numbers.&nbsp; 1205288L1&nbsp;(with modem) and 1205288L2 (without modem).&nbsp; However there have been several revisions of this controller card.&nbsp; When&nbsp;I spoke with ADTRAN tech support a while back they said a lot of time the part numbers change due to very minor changes but essentially, all versions of the MX2800 controller work the same way - that is -- they break down a DS3 into 28 T1s like the model before it and the model after it.&nbsp; </P>

<P>The Controller is the brains of the outfit.&nbsp; It takes the channelized DS3 that comes in from the BNC connectors and breaks it down into 28T1s and then sends them out the Amphenol connection.&nbsp; The Amphenol connection is cabled to a Patch Panel (1200291L1) that gives 28 T1 RJ48 ports.&nbsp; See the diagram below.</P>

		<title><![CDATA[MX2820 Battery Backup for Redundant Power]]></title>

		<description><![CDATA[<P>After searching the ADTRAN website and flipping through the catalog, I realized there was no listing for a redundant power supply for the MX2820.&nbsp; After doing a little research, I found that there was no power supply - period.</P>
<P>This is because it connects directly to DC power and the chassis handles that.&nbsp; As far as battery back up, there isn't a designated bundled part number, but I did discover if you took the bundle for the Total Access 750 and 850 (which is the same battery back up as for the MX2800) you can create the parts necessary to provide battery backup for the MX2820.</P>
<P>Check out my diagram below - it's the one for the MX2800 and TA units, but it will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.&nbsp; Below the diagram are the part numbers needed for the bundles.</P>
