"Nice little laptop" 2010-05-23

Bought this for my daughter's birthday. Excellent little laptop for her. The battery life is excellent, machine seems to be made very well. The outside does act as a fingerprint magnet, but it does look nice. Some of the Windows Software is trial stuff, so I removed and replaced it with OpenOffice and Firefox and Avast Antivirus. Plan to install Linux Mint on it soon. Overall very satisfied.

I've had this netbook for about 5 days. So far I am very pleased with it. It feels sturdier than most netbooks I've looked at. I upgraded the stock 160G (5500rpm) hard drive to a Westen Digital 250G Scorpio Black Sata 7200rpm. The 16mb cache on the new drive helped. I also upgraded Windows XP to Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit) and bumped up the memory to 2G. The memory upgrade is a must! I'm using a Crucial SODIMM model number CT25664AC667. Ok I went over board with the upgrades but this little thing has handled it so far! It really doesn't run too hot either. I'm getting about 7 hours on the battery with 'power saver' turned on. I expected that due to the new hard drive.

Anyhow, you won't go wrong with this baby. The LCD (1024 X 600) monitor is pretty nice. Note I had to down load a video driver from Gateway for Windows 7 in order to utilize (1024 X 600).

I didn't rate this a 5 star for one reason, my double-click button under the keypad has been flakey. Thanks!

I've never had a Netbook before but this one exceeded my expectations. One quirk I've noticed is the connection to the wireless network (occasionally I have to "repair" the wireless connection after starting up the netbook to acquire the network address), but once it's connected the speeds are very fast as this includes 802.11n networking. The keyboard is easy to use as they are larger keypad buttons and I don't feel too uncomfortable typing on it. I recommend getting Google Chrome as an internet browser and installing it on this netbook. Also, no need to purchase Norton anti-virus as Microsoft provides a free antivirus software called Microsoft Security Essentials. The battery life on this netbook is also incredible as it lasts up to 10 hours without having to plug it in. This Gateway Netbook is definitely worth the 330 dollars it was priced at when I bought it with free shipping.

This machine was purchased to be a 2nd machine in our home, and our traveling companion. The built in webcam and mike are perfect for Skype video communications with friends across the country. The built in wireles antennae and software integated easily into our home wireless network. The HP sync program is an nice asset for syncronizing files and pictures between your main PC and this machine. It is a great machine for e-mail and traveling. We can perform all functions that are important to us on the road. It was easy to set up and get running. It has an abundant amount of disk space. I can see upgrading the temporary copy of MS Office and Norton Protection to permanence in our future. Why red? The color expert likes it!

I got this for Mother's Day and I must say it is all I expected it to be. I have a computer whiz in the family who added lots of software and a personal screensaver even with the Windows 7 Starter. I have plenty of space for all my music, movies and pictures. I take it almost everywhere. Access the internet with my iPhone connection. The touch pad takes a little getting used to (the whole touchpad moves the mouse), but after I got the hang of it and tweeked it a bit, it is great. The screen is bright, the computer is plenty zippy and the battery life is good, although not as long as some other netbooks with 6 cell batteries. Now about the battery. It is large no doubt, but I've not found it to be a problem. In fact, it helps give me something to grip when I am carrying it around the house, and it has a good typing angle. If they ever come out with a smaller one, I might get that one and use the larger on for traveling, but it's no big deal for me. I haven't upgraded the memory as of yet. I am thinking about Windows 7 premium in the future as well, but for now I am happy with this model. I did buy a wireless mouse and a bluetooth dongle so I will have options, for very little additional cost. The color red is nice, matte finish and not too bright. I think you would enjoy this neat little netbook.

I originally ordered a Samsung netbook. I had mega problems with its backup system. After 5 contacts with their (Samsung)customer service, I had enough. Because the software was not working properly pretty much right out of the box, Amazon took the return and paid for shipping both ways. No problem.

After more investigation, I ordered the hp 210. I have not had any problems with it. Also, I find the keyboard far superior without the frequent dropped keys.

I am very happy with the hp, and I am very happyhow Amazon treated me.

I purchased the HP mini because I am on the go all of the time, so I needed something light and portable.
Overall this Mini performs pretty well, I had to upgrade the memory because the 1g was insufficient.
I like the extended battery life but do not really like how far the battery pack sticks out.
The netbook came loaded with a bunch of unnecessary junk software that I had to remove to improve the performance.
I tried to run HP QuickSync but when I loaded it on my other computer it told me that I have already used my allocated number and needed to purchase more licenses. I still haven't resolved this with HP.
Overall the Mini works well, although I am not sure whether the small computer is worth the sacrifice for portability.

I had only planned on using the Mini for trips and what not, but I've been quite impressed with it's speed and disk space for use as an extra desktop.

I would like to see an option for more ram - 2gig would have been nice and that will probably be an upgrade I'll make in the future.

"This is a good laptop" 2010-03-05

I have owned the thinkpad x100e for 3 weeks and so far I am satisfied with this laptop. The laptop is small, light, quiet, keyboard and touchpad are really comfortable, the webcam has a high resolution. The two options of trackpoint and touchpad are convenient, especially for a new thinkpad user like me who is not used to the trackpoint. I really like the zoom function of the touchpad, it makes reading more easily on a small screen. This laptop does not have HDMI, and it is probably not suitable for game players since it is more like a netbook.
Pros: portable, comfortable to use,quiet, zoom function of the touchpad, high resolution webcam.
Cons: No HDMI

"A great baby Thinkpad notebook" 2010-02-21

I have used this as my main work machine, doing office / productivity work, for about a month now. It is a great small laptop, especially for the price.

Build quality is superb. The X100e does not have a roll cage (i.e. internal metal skeleton) like some higher-priced X and T series Thinkpads, but you'd never know it, probably because the small size makes it largely unnecessary. The case is nice and stiff; the hinges are superb; and in general the build quality seems to be a cut above the T6x series, at least. However, I do miss the slightly rubbery paint from my other Thinkpads; this black matte paint is smoother. Still nice, but not as nice.

The keyboard is the best I've used on a laptop. It is superior to the ones on my T60 and T61, previously my favorites.

The touchpad is also superb.

I've disabled the camera, partly because I'll never use it and partly to save on battery life.

The screen is very nice and bright. In fact I have to turn it down from the brightest setting sometimes indoors, as it can hurt my eyes due to the extreme brightness. The resolution is just fine for doing research, writing, etc. After a quick period of adapting, the screens on my T6x series feel huge and overly tall by comparison. It is enough resolution to dock side-by-side windows and work with dual documents, barely.

I haven't had any problems with heat. I think this may be because I don't stress the video card much if at all. The bottom gets quite mildly warm under prolonged use.

Performance is just fine in my book. With 9 windows of Google Chrome open, two Word documents, one Notepad text file, Windows Media Player playing an HD movie, two Windows Explorer windows, Adobe Reader 9 opened to a large PDF file, TrueCrypt drive encryption running, AVG, and Warcraft III-- RAM usage was around 1.2 gigs, and processor use hovered around 60-70%.

I am not a big gamer. Playing Warcraft III against my 4-year-old, though, at full res with all eye candy turned on runs smoothly.

Going further on the performance angle, the AMD MV-40 is often roughly compared with a Pentium M 1.6 GHz or thereabouts. That is probably pretty accurate, but my machine feels a bit faster than machines of that rough vintage, such as the T4x series. This is probably due to the SSD, faster RAM, faster better everything else etc. in the X100e. So you would essentially get a better-than-X41 performer in the X100e in my opinion, for a budget price. Not bad for doing productivity work at all, though it is no speed demon by today's standards.

I spent roughly $100 to upgrade to an X25-V SSD, which noticeably improved performance. After the upgrade, my Windows boot time is 25 seconds, shutdown time is under 10 seconds, sleep/standby mode time is 4 seconds, and resume from sleep/standby is 2 seconds. The 160 GB drive my machine came with went into an $8 enclosure and now serves backup duty.

Battery life easily goes beyond 5 hours for the type of work I do (before the SSD upgrade it was generally around 4:30). I have the processor set to max out at 60% in battery mode, and the screen is generally set to around 5-6 brightness, which is usually enough.

I still don't have Photoshop loaded on this machine. I think that's where the processor's shortcomings would be most noticeable, processor- and ram-hungry applications like that. But this is not a slow machine IMHO.

I also don't think most people would need more than 2 GB of RAM, unless using something like Photoshop where they wanted better performance. Simple multitasking that most people would do probably wouldn't need more than 2 GB. Even with music running in the background, a slew of browser windows, etc. I just don't see how it could stack up to 4 GB. It seems to be an increasing practice to load a machine with 4 GB or even 8 GB of RAM, but I wonder how many eager buyers realize that the RAM they're buying will never be used.

Of course, I am running Windows in a minimal way. I guess some OS features could consume extra RAM, although I wouldn't know what they are. I tend not to like a lot of junk running in the background, unless it will actually help me run my programs or the machine.

The machine is very attractive and professional-looking. People constantly ogle it, and I've received many questions about it. I personally prefer the size to that of the X200 (the X100e is noticeably smaller).

The lack of an optical drive is definitely a negative for me. It makes it much mroe of a hassle to install things. If you don't already have an external drive, take this into account.

The lack of the Thinklight is also a downer. It is one of my favorite Thinkpad features, and I wonder why Lenovo couldn't have charged an extra 25 cents or whatever it costs for a single LED light and a bit of wire. I suspect it was intentionally left out to differentiate the X100e more from the X200.

Another really disappointing drawback, for me, is the tiny half-size media card reader. An SDHC card will only insert halfway, meaning I cannot have a built-in, always-ready backup device for my most important files. I understand the machine is tiny, but they still could have squeezed in an extra few millimeters for a bigger card reader. The card reader also has no documentation, apparently, meaning I have no idea if any of the formats it supports (which I cannot figure out) would fit completely inside the reader. I plan to follow up with technical support on this.

The ordering process was not so smooth. Lenovo customer service sent me an .xls file, telling me to update it and send it back them to start my service contract. Eventually they caved on this, after I griped. It just didn't seem fair to make people install Microsoft Office or similar program to get what they bought, and in any event I didn't have an office program installed at the time. The machine itself was back-ordered and took weeks to produce, and the status was seldom updated. The machine and accessories came piecemeal: first the extra power supply, followed weeks later by the machine, followed later by the neoprene sleeve.

However, I am really glad to be able to take advantage of Lenovo warranty service. I bought next-business-day support for three years. I have never been anything but impressed with IBM or Lenovo warranty service, and since this is my work machine I needed it.

All in all, this is my favorite notebook, ever. I would buy a Thinkpad netbook if they made one, but this is not a netbook. Netbooks are characterized by super-cheap price, excellent battery life, poor performance, and usually by poor ergonomics and durability. This machine offers perfect ergonomics, great durability, enterprise-class service options, middling battery life, and middling performance. I'm not bothered by the "netbook" name some apply to this machine, but I would not, could not do my everyday work on a netbook. This machine, I can.

The single biggest drawback, for me, is the battery life. But if I wanted longer than 5 hours of battery life, and wanted better performance and even better durability, I would have saved up for an X200 series. For what it is, this machine is perfect for me.

I was very happy with the delivery. I like the laptop but had to add 2GB of RAM and install Windows XP instead of the Windows 7 starter edition. It took 5 minutes to shut down. It seemed to run much quicker with Windows XP SP3. It also runs very warm. I gave Dell a support call just to give Windows 7 a chance but didn't have any luck with support.

Venting is on the underside, which makes me wonder about placing the lap top computer in my lap!!
Not real happy with the touch pad, but do not know whether any worse than other computers.
The most unsatisfactory feature is the screen; no mater what one does, there is always a LOT of reflection.

A wireless mouse is an absolute necesity.

I agree with the reviewer who complained about the touchpad. It's the one thing I dislike about this computer. It's a great piece of hardware for the money. It's small and light (obviously); the keyboard is very nice (even for a guy who's 6'2" with moderately large hands); the small screen is quite workable (and I'm a heavy user of both of the large screens on my office desktop); it's thoughtfully laid out (eg USB ports on both sides).
I bought it to travel with, take notes with at meetings, do email, run itunes, maybe a little skyping (it has a built in camera) - that kind of thing, and it seems like it will do all those well. Would not want to have sit in front of it for 8 hours, but that's not what it was designed for. If the ipad with 3G was out, I might have bought that instead. My only reservation is the touchpad. Hopefully, there's a trick to it and I'll adjust.

I just got the Dell Mini 1012 Netbook... and choose this over ASUS 1005, HP 210 and Samsung mainly because of three reasons:

One, its feels solid...feel more like a laptop.. not any cheap old plastic netbook,
Second, the keyboard rocks, simply amazing to type... its not a chiclet keyboard :) but feels like a real-keyboard. I am typing a little over 80 WPM on it (thats what I get on my regular laptop).. :)
Finally, the screen is amazing, very clear and bright, better than ASUS or HP or MSI .. go to a store like BestBuy and see them in action and compare. YouTube picture quality has been amazing.

I have used the Atom N270 Netbook before, but the Atom N450 is cool.. I can run Powerpoint, Word Doc and Internet Explorer at the same time... and switching between the Apps without any delay.. almost like a regular notebook -- with N270 it literally used to hang :) Also, I am getting more than 8 hours of battery life with thoese Applications, which is cool.

I love the performance that is packed into this little computer. I would like for Windows Basic to allow custom desktops but I guess this helps the performance. I love its small size and feather weight. You can easily carry it in a pocketbook or large jacket pocket. We have had it for over a month and have found no issues so far. Also it was surprising that there was very little bloatware installed. My other Dell Laptop is 4 years old and works as good as when it was new. I hope this one lasts as long.

I was after a new netbook (owned an EEE 701)and thought I would go with the Dell this time around.

I found the Dell the most attractive package in early 2010 for the follwoing reasons:

1. comes with the new Atom 450 (should be a little more nergy efficient)

2. the 6-cell battery gives me more air time than the 3-cells batteries in so many other netbooks.

3. the keyboard is a pleasure to type on quickly.

4. the case is not only pretty but sturdy. No noticable flexing of any kind under pressure.

5. the screen is nice, colors vibrant.

6. touchpad is of a nice and usable size.

I've been using the Mini now for a couple of days and I'm not disappointed. I use it for light web surfing, emails, and typing (the classic core apps of a netbook). In addition, I use it for streaming music under my Zune subscription.

My expectations are met. Windows Starter only seems a bit of a bottleneck in terms of included (or lacking) features compared to Home or Professional. I couldn't figure out how to back up the Mini via a mapped network drive and as it stands, it must be a missing (or blocked) feature due to Windows 7 Starter Edition. Upgrading seems the better choice if one really wants to use the Mini for sharing and streaming at home.

"A student's opinion -- this netbook vs. HP Mini 100" 2010-05-05

I got this netbook around two and a half weeks ago, which means I can't talk about long-term effects. But here's what I thought about this netbook.

I have a problem with my wrists which makes writing on paper for extended periods of time difficult and painful, but I type 90 words a minute, so I got an HP Mini 100 (chosen because the keyboard was the best I'd tried), for taking notes in school.

The HP was good, don't get me wrong, but the screen's shape was clunky, it dropped my main wireless signal at school within a month, and even though it had a nice pattern on the back it wasn't the prettiest interface out there.

After seven months I accidentally broke the screen, and the warranty told me it wasn't fixable and gave me back the money I'd payed for it. After trying this netbook out at a store and liking it but not its price, I eventually settled on buying this one off Amazon and getting a much cheaper online warranty.

It arrived in a week, nicely packaged, with a power cable you had to put together. It was much lighter than the HP mini, and quite a bit more attractive-looking.

INTERFACE

The interface is gorgeous. Buttons are big and wide, the lights are displayed attractively, and it's pretty darn sexy looking. There is a barely visible pattern of horizontal lines on the back of the screen, which isn't that nice and certainly doesn't measure up to the elegant, fun, black-and-silver bubbles of the HP mini, but neither is immediately noticeable. There's a small silver bar reading Gateway on the lefthand side of the screen, with a tiny Gateway logo. I plan on getting a skin for the back when I can, just to make it a little prettier, but it isn't that needed.

This thins is a fingerprint magnet, though, and scratches easily where the HP mini chipped. You'll have to keep dusting it off and washing off fingerprints. In two days it looked like my HP mini after I'd had it two months. So if you aren't gentle with your netbooks (lord knows I'm not), you might want to consider investing in a screen before it gets really scarred-looking.

The touchpad is also a little more difficult to use, and keeps zooming in, but I'm getting the hang of it.

DISPLAY

The screen's very high quality, and it comes with a webcam far superior than the HP mini, or the one on my father's Mac. This webcam isn't extremely extremely high quality, but it's very nice looking, and has lots of brightness/contrast/color settings to get you in your best light. The positioning of the webcam is awkward angle-wise, of course, but that's just because it's a netbook.

This comes with Windows 7 Starter, which has a folder organizational system similar to a Mac. I thought I was going to hate Windows 7, because I love XP's taskbar so much and automatically clumping programs are the bane of my existence. However, with a couple setting changes that are easy to find, it's possible to get the same shape and type of taskbar, except the logo/home button on my Stardock theme is a little cut off, but it's just odd-looking and not a problem at all.

Right. Stardock.

Big problem. All caps now: YOU CANNOT CUSTOMIZE YOUR DISPLAY. THERE APPEARS TO BE NO WAY TO APPLY THEMES OR CHANGE YOUR DESKTOP BACKGROUND.

So I went to the web, and found out Acer made a deal with STARDOCK MY COLORS, a company that makes beyond well-designed themes for Windows Vista/Windows 7. These themes are very expensive (20 bucks each!) so Stardock wants to entice you.

They offer up three free themes: a "go green", environmental one, a smooth pretty blue-silver one, and an online game scarlet one. The first two come with icon design for folders, and they're all very pretty. You install Stardock's program, apply your choice free theme (or stick with the other one), and it gives you desktop background options including pictures from your file.

You still can't use other web themes than Stardock's, but theirs aren't half bad.

Also, with Windows 7, there are gadgets you can put on the desktop, and ones you can download online. Those work wonderfully, and I use a to-do-list to keep track of my homework and notepad to keep track of my schedule.

KEYBOARD

Previously, I found it was difficult for me to type on the smaller keyboards, and selected the HP because its keyboard was so expansive. But after months of typing on the HP, I learned to adapt, and this keyboard isn't full-sized, no, but it doesn't have those ugly ridge things that others do and before I'd spent an hour with the netbook I could type just fine.

If you haven't used a netbook before or aren't a good typer, the keyboard might take some getting used to, but it is by far a great keyboard and you could do much worse in the netbook vein.

USB DRIVES/POWER CORDS/BATTERY

The power cord connector is on the left side of the netbook. There are three ports for USB drives alone, which should be more than enough for the average consumer. There's also mike and earphone jacks, and the other types of connectors you'd expect on a computer. These ports and jacks line both sides of the netbook, and there's no ports at the back.

The tiny-icons part of the taskbar (you know, sound, battery, updates, etc.) also includes a USB drive button that makes removing any drive easy. If that doesn't work, the Hard Disk Drives section of the Windows Explorer folders lets you remove with ease. No problems yet.

The power cord is shorter than the HP mini, and if you'd like to reach across a room, get an extension. It suits my needs just fine. I wish it didn't end with a clunky bar that extends down, which makes it hard to plug into the middle of a line of three or more power outlets, but it can plug in things both upside-down and rightside-up, so that's a plus.

Battery life is stellar, much better than the HP mini, and if you're on battery power the system gives you an estimate of how long you can run it on the current power setting. I tend to really like the way Balanced looks when it's plugged in, and want to run it with a better display quite a bit more than my HP, which I was content to just plug in when need be.

RUN TIME

Generally, it starts up fast, opens programs fast (Only around five seconds for Word 2007! It's a miracle!), and surfs the Internet fast. The speed is much improved from my HP mini.

Overall, I highly recommend this for its wonderful price, beautiful features, and functionality. Yes, if you're editing pictures or video it is going to be slow and obnoxious, but I have another computer to do that on. To surf the Internet, use Word, watch videos on the Internet, listen to music, take notes for school...this is perfect.

I just returned my Toshiba NB-205 and exchanged it for this. I had bought the Toshiba based on all of the positive reviews. This machine had a lot of positisives, but not as many as others. I figured since Acer owns Gateway, and Acer makes nice low cost laptops, this had to be a winner. Well, all I have to say is that this is way better. Yes it does have the new Intel n450 chipset and all the great features. I got the one with the 250 GB HD. This thing is extremely quick and compact. I keep the power settings at balanced and get great performance and battery life.I do switch it to high performance and get a boost in overall speed. Windows 7 Starter is not bad and gets the job done. Win 7 Premium would be nicer, but I can dealwith it.I just ordered a 2GB memory module, however it does surprizingly well with 1GB. Compared to the Toshiba, it is like night and day. It is better looking,has stereo speakers (and yes you can hear them) the audio is excellent. It handles video with no problem(720p). Netflix streaming is great, video and audio quality is excellent. Wifi is fast. I wish it had bluetooth, but i got a tiny BT dongle for $5.oo and it works great (Dealextreme). The laptop looks great, keyboard is a bit cramped, but no different than any other netbook. I thought about getting an Ipad, but then realized how limited it is compared to this.
The decision was a no-brainer. $200.00 less and does way more.

Although we have a desk top computer I need the netbook to be more efficent and maximize my time. I took my netbook with me last night to a conference and the ability to take notes instantly without first writing them down and then transfering them through data entry is priceless. I am able to work while I am at wrestling practice or basketball practice. I am able to pull something up during meetings. The battery life is exceptional. I wouuld surely purchase this netbook again!

This notebook is portable and does everything my bigger laptop does. I attend school and taking this light-weight laptop to school with me is so much easier to carry and I don't lose any options that my bigger laptop has. This smaller laptop has not disappointed me at all. Its fast and the battery lasts a lot longer than my larger laptop does, which is another great feature.

"Its still just a netbook" 2010-04-23

I bought this model of computer through Verizon Wireless for $199 dollars and a two year data agreement. I replaced a Lenovo S10e that I have had for about a year. The problem with the Lenovo was the weak Intel graphics which were really showing its age. Unfortunately the HP311 and the ION graphics from NVIDIA did not really help. The real issue is the Atom CPU which is a single core chip and even though it has hyper threading which allows for two threads at a time. It does not compete with a two core chip. Windows 7 Premium is good but it does seem to slow it down and I am not sure that it was the right choice for this type of Netbook. Maybe with a newer duel core Atom chip it might have been better. All in all this little netbook does have a perfect size screen and it works much better with the web page designs. You save yourself a lot of scrolling. The keyboard is very nice and you make a lot less mistakes typing with the bigger keys. The Touchpad is another story because although it is pretty big it also has a nagging drag to it. Sometimes its unresponsive and sometimes its irattic. Fan noise is minimal but the fan does seem to run all the time! My advise is not to spend more then $400 on this computer and upgrade to a real noetbook unless you really like this netbook. Its a bit pricy for what you get and it deffinately cannot replace the performance of even a cheaper Celeron duel core in a cheap Notebook.

All in all it's a good netbook. It plays a number of current / modern video games at great resolution and speed. The OS is very responsive, the keyboard feels solid. The track pad is a little touchy and the slightest brush will cause mouse movement, but that can be adjusted. The expansion ports are easy to access and the battery life on the 6 cell is good (though not noteworthy). The Mini 311 can stream HD quality video (MP4, AVI, MKV) pretty well and the HDMI out is handy enough to make this my new media center PC.

I have to say, I am slightly disappointed in one major area: FLASH VIDEO SUCKS!!! Yes, I've already downloaded the Flash 10.1 release candidate. It improved the speed of flash videos a little bit but I still get choppiness on sub-HD quality flash videos from youtube. I watch a LOT of flash videos on Youtube and Hulu. The thing that drives me crazy the most is that my previous netbook, the Acer Aspire One (which sells for LESS THAN HALF of what I paid for the mini 300) ran flash video flawlessly. Go figure....

All in all a decent netbook, but since it doesn't perform in one of my major focus areas I'm left feeling like I'm missing out. If you watch a lot of flash stuff, this is NOT the netbook for you. Go with something that has a Broadcomm HD decoder instead of NVIDIA Ion.

My son has a gaming computer with 16 GB of RAM,TB HDD, quad core 2.66 processor, 1 GB video card, etc. He doesn't want to drag it around for connectivity so asked me to get him a netbook due to being cheaper than a laptop. He has been completely satisfied with this machine and based on his gaming computer's capabilities that seems like high praise indeed.

This item gets great battery life, and runs reasonably well. Unlike most netbooks, the keys aren't little tiny squares so it's easier to type on. Physically, this thing seems fairly well built. My only complaint is the design of the mousepad, which is really easy to accidentally touch while typing, and it can mess you up if you aren't careful. I still have yet to find a way to make it less sensitive. Other than that, this netbook is pretty good.

"love this little computer" 2010-05-03

I have a 17inch HP computer, and although I really like it, it's not convenient for travel, both for its size and short battery life. I am quite impressed with this little Acer netbook, it's so much nicer than I expected. It starts up fast (I deleted some of the installed trial programs and the games). The battery life is said to be 8 hours, and I have not had a problem with it dying even after several hours, so I imagine that is a reasonable estimate. The touchpad is small but nicely responsive. The view is clear and sharp, and it comes with a webcam. Finally, the price is terrific! I am very pleased with this purchase.

We purchased the netbook as a way to let our kids on the internet without jeopardizing all things holy on our main computer. We set all security settings to maximum and purchased ESET software that was top rated by consumer reports for internet users who may not always be safe.(opening various windows and advertisements)
The whole family uses it! However, the Windows 7 Starter does not allow you to switch users without logging off, which means closing all activities. Otherwise, we love it.

I wanted this netbook to take out onto a golf course to do scorekeeping for a large group of golfers using a system I built in Excel . It works very well for that primary purpose with one hesitation about the screen glare and visibility in high light (sun) conditions. I need to find a shady spot for decent visibility but that is no big surprise.

The computer has thus far exceeded my expectations by a pretty wide margin. It handles the complex Excel file I am using with no problem at all. It is lightweight but sturdy and the keyboard is easy to use for a large man with big hands. The battery life is quite amazing at more than 4 hours, at a minimum, using the battery that was supplied with the computer.

Shortly after I got the computer I took a trip and it came along for the ride. The ease of taking it in place of my 17 inch laptop was a pleasure. It connected easily with a variety of wifi networks, including some pretty low power "borrowed" unsecure networks.

I was also able to use the computer as a digital picture frame without very much difficulty. I downloaded Picasa (for free) and plugged in my SD card to download my pictures and I suddenly had a 10 inch portable picture frame to review all the pictures with my family on the road.

I wound up buying the accesory kit at one of the office supply stores for $72. The kit includes a wonderful case, optical drive and mouse. I am very pleased with the accesory kit as well.

Windows 7 works very well for this device. I read the negative reviews about the "Starter" edition and I have no need for the software upgrade. I also have no need to upgrade any memory. Save your money.

I am very happy with my $375 investment.

Regarding Amazon, they continue to please me with their services. The delivery of the product was perfect and ahead of the pubished scedule. I also love their product reviews, such as this one, that help guide me to make product selections away from the commerical propoganda. Hopefully this review will help you pull the trigger on buying a netbook like this one. It won't replace you bigger laptop but it sure is terrific for mobility.

I really like this netbook. After doing some informative research, including reading the reviews of the other netbooks on Amazon.com, I decided to purchase this netbook because it met the specifications I needed. I use the netbook mostly for keep meeting and class notes. With the long life battery this netbook is perfect for travel and for taking to the classroom. It is lightweight, compact and easy to use. Although the storage on the hard drive is limited in comparison to larger computers, I use a flash drive for storage of large documents. And though the netbook is smaller, I did not find its smaller keyboard to be a problem or awkward. The programs that come installed are quick and responsive - including access to the internet,a suite of Microsoft programs,and email. When first using the netbook, the programs that come with it give step-by-step application instructions which makes this netbook even more user friendly than some of the other computers I have used. I can not comment on its use for games since this is not what I got the netbook for, but for my needs, it has not disapointed me.

"Gateway Netbook LT2120u" 2010-05-16

We now have three of these in our family so needless to say we are very happy with this little "gem" of a computer. For any on-the-go family, these are perfect in size and function. My 15 inch laptop now seems so heavy and burdensome to carry around. I even bought one for my seven year old as she is home schooled and she absolutely loves it.

"Unable to Upgrade Memory - Gateway Tech Support doesn't care" 2010-05-10

First a bit of background - I am a unix system administrator with more than 25 years in IT. I've worked with servers from IBM, HP, Compaq, Dell, Sun, and even the old DEC. I've been working with PCs since the 80s. I know PCs. That said then:

I purchased the Gateway LT2119u (the black version) as an easy-to-carry PC solution for an upcoming trip to China. My intention was to upgrade it to 2GB upon receipt so I also purchased the Crucial DDR2 PC2-5300 667Mhz module recommended here (and on the Gateway site). Short story, the netbook would not recognize the 2GB module. Upon power up, it would do nothing - not even get to POST. So I reinstalled the original 1GB module, opened up the BIOS settings and disabled the "Quick Start" option therein and tried the 2GB module again. Same story, nothing, not even POST. I contacted Crucial and they said to update the BIOS and try again. Checking the gateway site (don't even try calling - there is no direct phone support for gateway) I found I have the most current BIOS available.

So thinking that perhaps, on the rare chance that it was a problem with the memory module, I ordered another 2GB module, this time a PNY with the same specs - DDR2, PC2-5300 667MHz. Same story - the netbook failed to recognize the new module and froze before POST.

So I contacted Gateway tech support via email. Over the course of three days and six or eight email exchanges they (Gateway Tech Support) determined that the computer was working as designed with the factory installed options and therefore this was an "out of scope" issue [i.e. not a defect or warranty problem]. They said they would be happy to turn the issue over to their "dedicated team called "Pay for support" who will be able to provide [me] with the best options available and help [me] further." Uh, no thanks.

So cutting my losses, I'm returning the LT2119u and going with someone else. Over the years I've had numerous dealing with tech support organizations including Compaq/HP, Dell, Sun, IBM, Symantec, and Oracle. I've even had good support from TigerDirect on a pieces-and-parts home built gaming PC. I've *never* dealt with a more disinterested support organization than Gateway. And I'll be darned if I ever deal with them again.

So while this may have been a decent little netbook, I'm giving it a 1 star rating ("I hate it") because of the lousy support I received from Gateway's Tech Support organization. They spent way more time determining whether the machine was registered, and if it was still in warranty than actually attempting to resolve what I consider a fairly basic problem. And for me this was a showstopper. So adios Gateway.

Bought this because I was tired of lugging my laptop around on trips. This is very compact, light, and fits in an average sized purse. The screen is very clear, the keys are very comfortable, and it can go pretty much all day without needing to be charged. I did order the extra memory with it, I should have also ordered a soft case (I got one later). Great product!

I have had this for over a week now and just love it. I have large fingers and the keys are easy to use for me. I ordered the ram that amazon recomends for this netbook and after installing it the netbook would not boot. I tried reseating several times but it still would not work. I then took my netbook to a local pc repair shop and they tried 2 other ram sticks based on manufactures recomendations but no luck will try more ram later

I do a lot of shopping on Amazon. I look at reviews and what is bestselling. I knew I wanted a netbook. I chose this Gateway because of the reviews it had received, both through Amazon and other sites. I absolutely love it! The screen is so crystal clear. The keyboard feels nice and big for a netbook. My husband has an Acer and we both agree, this is a better netbook. The styling is great. I only need it to surf the net, so I cannot comment on use of programs and such. I would be surprised if anyone was actually disappointed with this product.

"nice little unit." 2010-05-16

Got the XP version, because the whole -idea- of win7 'starter' just makes me angry. But specifically, the in-ability to extend the desktop onto another monitor (without a paid upgrade) is a major drawback for a unit with a 10" screen. No such prob with the XP version, as is. Xp versions not available with >160Gb disk, so there's your tradeoff.

I seriously considered the ASUS brand, which is well reviewed and offers slightly more bang for the buck, but, I own other Acer products, and finally just went with the familiar brand. I like the color too, fwiw.

The unit was packaged in the familiar handle box and arrived a day early without any sign of mis-handling. Unpacking and setting up the unit was straight-forward. Deleted several 'free trial versions,' dug up our home network key, downloaded Firefox, AVG, and a Citrix client (that gets me on the company server), and went to work.

The screen is clear, bright, and very sharp. I had no trouble working with smaller text and images. Didn't hate the 'chicklet' keyboard either. I seem to be using only four fingers, but good speed and no more typos than usual.

XP recognized all the peripherals in the house, including two Canon printers, a chinese knockoff portable dvd drive, and multiple mice, keyboards and monitors. With mouse, keyboard and cheap 17" monitor, this netbook is a desktop replacement as powerful and useful as any laptop I've ever owned. Disconnect everything, and its a great deal more portable -- at less than half the price.

Only caveat is that I am not a gamer, so no comment there. The video and sound systems are plenty good for what I do. Before it recognized my crappy old 17" monitor for the wimp it is, it was offering me some very large-pixel resolution choices.

Enthusiastically recommended.

"Terrific Ultra-Light Netbook" 2010-05-15

The Acer Aspire One 532H is sold in many versions, with some vendors, such as Costco, having unique versions. The major differences are 160GB hard drives versus 250GB hard drives, and "regular" six cell batteries versus long-life six cell batteries. All current versions should have Windows 7, instead of the older versions' Windows XP.

I bought the Costco version, which comes with a two year warranty, instead of the one year warranty, a 160GB hard drive, and the long-life battery. I have been able to routinely get 8 hours to 9 hours of use before needing to charge the battery. The ultra-light weight of the 532H and its slim body make it easy to carry in my briefcase all day.

When I stop for coffee, it quickly identifies available wireless internet connections. I use it primarily for e-mail and checking the news headlines. However, although the keyboard is a bit cramped, after some time to adjust, typing shorter documents is not difficult. The screen is sharp and easy to read.

The power pack and charger is smaller and lighter than usual, so bringing it along for a week-end trip is not a burden. If the battery is totally drained, it fully recharges in two to four hours, depending on whether you are using the computer while it is charging.

When I have a fast internet connection (1.3 mbps or faster) the 532H will play back TV shows on Hulu smoothly, although sometimes it is necessary to pause the show for a few minutes to enable the memory buffer to fill up.

Using the Windows Task Manager to monitor CPU use and memory use indicates that memory use tops out at 700 megs to 800 megs with eight or ten Browser tabs open, and also running another program, such as listening to music on Pandora or watching a TV show on Hulu. I suspect a program such as PhotoShop would be very slow with just one GB of memory however. The CPU sometimes tops out at 100% load, indicating that the CPU, not the 1GB of memory, is the primary cause of the computer running slowly during some tasks.

There is no reason to upgrade to two GB of RAM if you will be using the Aspire for e-mail, browsing the news, listening to music, or watching videos on Hulu. I purchased a mini-DVD unit so that I could watch movies. Using Windows Media Player, there was a great picture, but no sound. I downloaded the free VLC video software, and movies then played fine, with nice stereo sound. Then I tried Windows Media Player again, and it was also playing DVD movies with sound...I'm guessing that when I downloaded the VLC video player, it included an audio codec that Windows 7 was missing.

If I were going on a trip for a few weeks, the Aspire, its charger, and the mini-DVD player would provide me with a complete computer system that weighs less than a total of five pounds...light enough to keep with you all day. Folks would have laughed ten years ago if you said that someday you would be able to buy a computer that weighed less than three pounds and cost less than $300. A real bargain.

"The Perfect Compromise" 2010-05-04

When I shopped for this netbook, it was a long process. There are so many different configurations and price points available. What I finally did was to write a wish list by order of priority with price obviously being the deciding factor. What finally made me decide on this netbook was that it had all of my high priority criteria and I didn't pay 30 to 50% more to get what I really din't need (bigger hard drive, `n' wireless or windows 7 home premium etc)
The following was my wish list in order with comments on this unit.
Long battery life, (6 cell battery doesn't stick out of the rear like a growth. About 10 hours as advertised!)
N450 processor minimum (not the N270 or 280 which cuts your battery life about 25%).
Reasonable hard drive. (160 GB is hard to fill but I can always upgrade later reusing the 160 in an enclosure.)
Integrated Bluetooth, (no dongles and much better software. Function key on and off with indicator LED. Wireless mouse (any track pad used more than a couple of minutes drives me nuts), easy PDA syncing plus lan sharing if no wifi, using your headset from your cell phone etc. Bluetooth is a very useful feature that you will find more useful as you go. It works great with all of my devices and it shares nicely. The software and the hardware was integrated by the manufacturer to work together properly and I would go this route than go for the $20 dongles that everyone seems to be complaining about. BTW, if something physically jars a dongle hard enough,it could destroy the computer board).
A good display (for one person viewing).
A reasonable keyboard.
XP is actually a bonus. (Works great on these smaller processors and it's a lot cheaper than 7 home premium!)
`802.11g' wireless is all you really need. (`g' is much faster than any internet speed so for a netbook, `n' is not worth buying a more expensive book to get it. You probably won't need it.)
webcam and microphone (work very well with Skype etc).
SDHC card slot (don't have Sony stuff so I am not paying for the extra slots I won't use).

Purchased with Microsoft Bluetooth mouse, works great but wish it was a little shorter for packing alongside the Acer. When you are travelling, you end up using the mouse in locations that a lesser or wired mouse wouldn't be comfortable with. Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 Mac/Windows

"Very good netbook" 2010-05-03

Build Quality:

Bargain notebook computers of the past often had wobbly hinges or had a body that would flex
not so with this netbook. I am happy to report that the hinges are sturdy, don't wobble
and the palm rest exhibits no significant flex, however the keyboard has a little bit of
flex when typing quickly.

Performance:

I swapped the hard drive for a 7200 rpm hard drive I had in my old notebook and installed
a full version of windows 7 with no performance issues even though I kept the 1 gb of ram
and I run avast antivirus in the background. Although the computer is less responsive than
my desktop, the responsiveness is more than adequate.

Battery:

Seems to get good life, but I haven't measured it and I probably decreased it by installing
a 7200 rpm drive and windows 7. I also like how the 6 cell battery elevates the computer
for better cooling without being obnoxiously big.

Other Comments:
-The screen is capable of extremely bright settings
-The touchpad button has a right and left click feature (I have heard some netbooks do not
have both)
-The computer does not come with a carrying case
-The cover is not completely blue, it is half black and blue (I thought what I saw in the
pictures was some sort of reflection)
-small AC adapter (resembles an over sized cell phone charger)which has the ability of
swapping plugs for international usage, although I don't think Acer sells the other plugs
-because of its lightness I find myself bring my netbook to school everyday

"Acer Technical Support" 2010-04-28

I've had the computer for a few months now, and have a note concerning Acer technical support.

I discovered a software problem with the Acer Fn+F2 key software toggle (Wireless toggle), and contacted Acer Technical Support about it. Unfortunately, the response I received about the bug from Technical Support (Praveen, Rajeesh, and Sreekanth) was "...the wireless toggle button is working.", and "...resolve the issue please contact "Pay for support" who will be able to provide you with the best options available and help you further.", and "For support concerning this issue, we have a dedicated team called "Pay for support" who will be able to provide you with the best options available and help you further."

My computer is still under warrantee, so I don't know why I would have to pay for support for a problem with the Acer software. Fortunately, the bug I found is not the end of the world (there is a work-around), but you would think that Acer would want to get information about the bug and maybe update their code to fix the problem.

Hopefully I won't find a major bug with their software.

Other than this bug the computer does seem to work OK - actually the computer works much better than Technical Support.

I really like this netbook. After doing some informative research, including reading the reviews of the other netbooks on Amazon.com, I decided to purchase this netbook because it met the specifications I needed. I use the netbook mostly for keep meeting and class notes. With the long life battery this netbook is perfect for travel and for taking to the classroom. It is lightweight, compact and easy to use. Although the storage on the hard drive is limited in comparison to larger computers, I use a flash drive for storage of large documents. And though the netbook is smaller, I did not find its smaller keyboard to be a problem or awkward. The programs that come installed are quick and responsive - including access to the internet,a suite of Microsoft programs,and email. When first using the netbook, the programs that come with it give step-by-step application instructions which makes this netbook even more user friendly than some of the other computers I have used. I can not comment on its use for games since this is not what I got the netbook for, but for my needs, it has not disapointed me.

I bought this laptop about a month or so ago, and I am loving it! Before getting it I checked out a lot of other ones and read the different reviews. I got some good input and bad. Overall, when buying a new laptop do as I did and go with your own judgement. I am having no problems and the startup was quick, especially with the helpful wizard. Anyway the price is great,,,,,the color is beautiful...the battery life is good,.....the buttons are spaced out just right and the screen is so clear. I could go on and on...but for the most part if you're looking for a new laptop then go with this one. **very trendy and gives a true fashion statement**

This is an overall decent little netbook its slow but I'm hoping the 2 GM memory will help. One thing to beware of is Acer is downright selling these units through false advertizing saying right on the box that they are 802.11 bgn capable. This is my second Acer and neither will work on the n range. I have a netgear n network router and my Dell mini 10 works fine over the n range. Acer downright has misrepresented the capabilities of thier netbooks. I won't purchase another one.

"Great netbook if you get the right stuff" 2010-05-13

Once I got it working, it seems great; however, it does need the 2GB memory.
I started out with -2588 (160GB disk) and could not get it to recognize a 2GB DDR2 PC5300 chip from Kingston or PNY. I actually bought that machine from Staples, and their tech said that Acer changed the specs and it no longer takes more than 1GB.

However, reading the comments on Amazon I will return the device to Staples and I already bought the -2326 with the Crucial memory listed on Amazon. It works like a champ!! Recognized the 2GB chip immediately. Didn't need to go into setup (F2), and it seems far zippier than the 1GB machine.

However, before I tried it, I looked at the Crucial website which suggested in red to be sure that machine had latest BIOS upgrade. I asked Acer Support about this and got the following reply: "Please be informed that the memory in your system is expandable only up to 1 GB." So Acer seems to be saying 1GB only, but with the Crucial 2GB memory it seems to work well. Of note, the 2GB Crucial chip as bundled by Amazon says DDR2 but when I run CUPZ-CPUID, it says it's a DDR3 chip.

In any case, so far so good, and happy with the 2GB configuration. I wonder if the system is pushing the limits and if ACER has pulled back because some 2GB chips don't work.

But for now, I'm smiling.

After long reviews i bought this little netbook in silver for me and the onyx blue for my daughter.Very excited about it. Got it yesterday and it was a delight. Setup was easy. Went on Staples website and ordered the upgrade for window 7, even got a 30 Dollar coupon so only paid 49.99 Dollars. My daughter just loves it and so do I. Window 7 is fast. Me who only deals with a desktop computer, had a blast experiencing all the new little things of a netbook. Still will do all my gaming on my Desktop, but for the rest I will use this one. I'm very happy with my decision and I would recommend this one to anybody who is looking for a netbook. And the price was right also.

I'll be returning this computer, I'll be down $50 for restocking fees, and really don't mind. I'm just glad I can be rid of it.

I suggest all these other glowing reviewers do the same. Get over the OMG LOLz IT'S SO SMALL!!!1! and move on with life.

The design decisions Acer made for this netbook suggest their engineers must have been in a mentally altered state when they signed off the drawings.

- The touchpad is textured? On purpose? Great, I have to lube my finger to use my netbook. Apple builds the smoothest glass touchpads into their portable computers because smooth is smooth. There is no expectation of that kind of quality here... but why the deliberately bumpy plastic?

- The palm-rest and mouse buttons are glossy plastic. Clearly an alternative plastic exists as the rest of the netbook is encased in it, but for some reason Acer wants you to see every single disgusting smudge you leave under your palms.

- Keyboard is forgettable. Zero tactile feedback. Try typing on mashed potatoes, and you'll get the idea.

- The Atom processor with Windows 7 is worthless. No single reviewer here must have played a Hulu video and actually paid attention. It barely works. WiFi performance is just as disappointing. Which leads to the next point...

- A 10-hour battery is also worthless if it takes 5 times longer to do everything. That's how slowly Windows 7 responds on this hardware. You can count the seconds it takes to switch tabs in Internet Explorer.

- There's more, but I'm tired.

Save up $100 more and get the lowest grade 15-inch laptop you can find, deal with the size, and you will be infinitely happier than I am.

I would order this exact Acer Notebook again. Fantastic model. Battery is true to ten hours no matter how many on and off you do. Set up the when it powers down like shutting the lid and save battery power. Very light weight.

"Will not replace desktop, but will suffice...for now." 2010-05-12

Long story short: my laptop crashed and needed to replace my hard drive; didn't have the time to do that so I stopped by microcenter on the way back to school (I'm a college student) and bought this little bugger. I had already been doing some research on netbooks.

I thought this would be able to replace my laptop. WRONG. As much as I wanted this to replace my laptop, it will not. It just can't. Drop that dream right now.

I don't know if it's just me, but the netbook is unbearably slow compared to my laptop. This is probably because 1) it's still on windows 7 starter and 2) I haven't upgraded to 2GB of memory yet. This is even when I am only running Microsoft Word and google chrome. Also, if I am trying to watch videos...don't even get me started! Gchat is kind of laggy...

Battery life is excellent. First day I got around 7 hours on a full charge (running word, chrome, anti-virus)

It's convenient because it's small, light, etc. Not a fan of the "texture" - thought it would be more like the 1005peb, but I was wrong again.

Nevertheless, I will live. However, I am looking to purchase a laptop/desktop.

CONCLUSION: This will not replace your laptop/desktop. It is literally only good for browsing the web and maybe taking notes.

This Netbook is an amazing buy for the money. I bought it and immediately upgraded to the 2GB RAM chip and therefore cannot couch for any performance difference.
So, I'll give the bad before the good, the list is much shorter and the god far outweighs the bad.
DO NOT TOUCH THE SUPER HYBRID BUTTON while any programs are running! Roughly half the time I've done this the screen flips out and displays bars of random static. Restarting via the power button solves the problem. This is the only reason I did not rate this product as a 5.
Now for the good, and there is plenty.
- Speed, with the 2 GB of RAM I've been able to run 2 Chrome tabs, Skype, Word, Windows Media Player, and Excel all at once.
- Wireless, very fast and reliable.
- Keyboard, solid and easy to use.
- Webcam, good resolution and easy to use.
- Weight, light as a feather, easy to carry and move.
- Battery Life, I haven't gotten the advertised 11 hours, it's still on the first dozen charge-discharge cycles, but I was running it hard, music, Chrome, Skype, Facebook, all open and it lasted for over 6. Not too shabby.
- Price, OUTSTANDING VALUE.

I have had this netbook for about 1 month now and its a great little machine. I liked this one because it doesn't have the shiny black finish that holds on to finger prints. No bluetooth or wireless N, but these were not important to me. The battery life is great. This computer easily outlasts my full size work laptop. I am finding the pointing device acceptable. The buttons are much better than my daughter's HP or my dad's Dell. Both of those machines have the pointer buttons as part of the touch pad, rather than a separate toggle type button used on the Asus. The speed of this machine is more than acceptable for web browsing and the wireless has fairly decant range. I have had no difficulties connecting to the internet at hotels or at home.

The only downgrade? That would be Windows 7 starter. The starter edition is lacking in many areas. I am sure this is a marketing decision to get users to upgrade. So far, I have been able to make do with free applications to make up for the short comings.

First of all, this is a decent computer that will allow you to view video content, listen to music, do some word processing, read and send email, etc. Fine. It does all of that well. HOWEVER, due to a wimpy amount of RAM and a weak processor, it frequently CRASHES when I'm using Skype. It just can't handle it.

Other issues: There is NO WAY it has 9.75 hours of battery life. Maybe with the lid closed.

Also, the data transfer software for transferring files from your main PC to this one was IMPOSSIBLE to use, and I use computers a lot. I just could NOT figure out how to make it work, and I searched all over the Internet for advice. That is, the manual that comes with this unit SUCKS. It tells you virtually nothing.

Furthermore, online support is also virtually useless, so if you have a problem with this unit, you'll be talking to a person in India, which I've done about 4 times regarding the crashing problem. One guy claimed it was my Avast antivirus program that was incompatible with Windows 7 (I found out on the Windows 7 website, afterward, that in fact Avast IS listed as compatible). This tech talked me into buying McAfee from him (at an inflated price...what was I thinking?), which I returned after my discovery. Probably just lying for cash as he'd been instructed by his boss. Nonetheless, I was pissed, and I had to pay for shipping.

Other issues:

1. This computer gets HOT on the bottom, and has no vents there, only one on the left side.

2. The battery jiggles, as it has an imperfect fit. This is actually rather annoying.

3. You cannot open up the screen more than about 75 degrees, so it won't open flat or anywhere near it. Sometimes, due to my viewing angle, I can't open it wide enough to see the screen as clearly as it could be. Annoying.

Overall, it works great as a second computer, which I keep on my coffee table in the living room. Fine. I browse the Internet with it for hours, listen to all of my music files, read and send email, check bank balances, etc. I watch Hulu videos with it, I download content with it at acceptable speeds, etc. The screen resolution is great, and the keyboard is actually excellent for a netbook--way better than other models. Just know that it's not a workhorse, like all netbooks, so it has limited multitasking capability, and if you overload it, apparently it'll just crash on you.

Before i start, i should say something about the rating i gave: If i were to rate this computer absolutely, as if in a vacuum, i would give it 3 or maybe even 2 stars. But i want to be fair and compare this to other netbooks, not to a full lap-top or my iMac or whatever. So we'll say 4 stars -- good as far as netbooks go.

One additional disclaimer: I actually got the Mini 210 HD, not the Mini 210. This is essentially the same machine, but the HD has a better screen with a higher resolution and viewing angle (and the option for an HD video decoder). So i'll try not to comment too much on the screen, since that would make the review inaccurate.

Anyway. Let's start with the GOOD things:

1. Aesthetically, the lap-top is gorgeous. Most netbooks i've seen (especially the eeePC) are hideous, but this one looks fantastic. The keyboard is beautiful, the shape is nice, the materials are nice, everything looks great.

2. Aesthetics aside, i like the keyboard. I'm not sure why other reviewers don't, because i find it very nice for a netbook, or a lap-top in general. It's got 'island' keys (similar to a Macbook's), which are my favourite kind. These aren't as good as Apple's, but it's a netbook, it's made to be inexpensive. I only have one problem with it (see bad things below).

3. Almost all netbooks really have the same hardware inside -- same CPU, GPU, &c. -- so this isn't different from any other netbook of the same generation. But just in case you need confirmation: It's what you'd expect. You can watch YouTube and play medium-range games, you get Aero in Win7, &c., but HD video is going to be more of a struggle, and higher-range games are out of the question.

In case you're wondering, the 'Windows Experience Index' scores for this netbook (with the factory hardware) are as follows:

Processor: 2.3
Memory: 4.5
Graphics: 2.9
Gaming graphics: 3.0
Hard disk: 5.3

4. The internals are easy to get to and it WON'T void your warranty to upgrade your RAM, unlike with the Dell Mini. The entire back of the machine comes off, so you can easily access the memory, card slot, &c.

5. Sound quality is pretty OK for a computer in this price range.

6. Battery life is great, and the extended battery (if you get it) isn't too bulky or ugly.

Now the BAD:

1. HP support is terrible, as it always is with any Windows PC manufacturer. If you have any issue that isn't very obviously a hardware problem, you are going to have trouble getting anything resolved, because HP will tell you that it's Microsoft's fault, and Microsoft (if they even talk to you) will tell you it's HP's fault, and so on for ever. Additionally, their support forum is terrible compared to Apple's (and that's saying something, because Apple's isn't even that great).

2. Related to the above: HP's Web site is god-awful. For example, i wanted to find the drivers for my computer, but it wants an exact model of HP Mini 210 (of which there are literally DOZENS). I looked everywhere -- in the box, in the manual, on the packing slip, under the battery, &c. -- and there is not a single model number anywhere on any of my documentation. The site had a 'how do i find my model number?' page, but of course it only lists Pavilions and printers, so it was completely unhelpful. What an idiotic system. I ended up using my product number, which was also difficult to find, but it ultimately worked.

3. The reason i've come to know the above is that my brightness controls don't work in Windows 7. They worked in Linux, and i think they worked in XP (which is what the machine comes with), but despite having all the correct drivers installed i get full brightness all the time. This is incredibly irritating and so far i have not been able to get a solution. I think it's an ACPI driver problem.

4. Although the keyboard is generally pretty nice, i have found after 2 or 3 months of use that the space bar squeaks a bit on my usual space-bar-hitting side (the right). I'm not sure if this is my fault somehow or if the keyboard is poorly designed, but it's somewhat irritating.

5. The touch pad is usable, but not great. It doesn't have physical buttons, which would be fine, but the Synaptics options for this model are horrible and don't let you use gestures for anything useful (why can i use three-finger tap to launch Notepad, of all things, but not to produce a middle-click?). Also i hate the implementation of two-finger scrolling on touch pads in Windows, but i guess that's kind of a Windows/Synaptics issue.

6. I said i would try not to mention the screen, but the following applies to both the HD and the normal Mini 210: The viewing angle on this is TERRIBLE. I mean, it stays readable for the most part (unless you tilt it up), but even the SLIGHTEST movement will cause the entire screen to change colours wildly. Obviously you shouldn't be using a netbook for graphics design or anything, but it's irritating even in normal usage. I assume this is the same for most netbooks though.

7. Unlike the Dell Mini 10v, this machine won't run OS X very well. It does run, but many things don't work, including wireless and graphics.

Overall, as a netbook, it's good. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a Linux or a Windows netbook. I wish Apple made a (real) netbook though, i def would have got that instead. :/

Not only is this a very good looking device, it has a great keyboard for a machine this size. I had nearly no difficulty switching from my full-size keyboard.

In case you're wondering about Linux support: I swapped my drive from my laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 (64bit) in the mini 210 and it just worked. No installation, no configuration. The only two minor issues are that you have to enable a restricted driver for the Broadcom wireless device and need a small hack to make the touchpad work. This minor annoyance will likely be resolved in the distributions quickly enough.

I'm using it with an Intel X25-M SSD and wholeheartedly recommend that, if you're willing to pay for it. The computer is extremely quiet and quite snappy (for a netbook).

I did some research on laptops for good reviews and this laptop had really good reviews.
I was going to get a Dell Inspirion 15, but after doing some research, I settled on
this Samsung 530. So far, I have found nothing that I do not like about this laptop.
I love the dark red color for a change. The keypad is very easy and comfortable to use.
The wide screen is nice and the graphics etc. show up so clearly and bright. It is quite
a solid and well built computer as far as I can tell. It is lighter than my old Dell which
will help when traveling through airports, etc. Just an all around good laptop for me and
my uses and for the price I wanted to pay. The price on Amazon was the cheapest I could find.
I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

I have owned many other laptops but this one is really special. The price is great, it was delivered to me in a day, and I was online and getting things done in less than half an hour. Easy to use, great keyboard, and I love the number keypad on the side (no need to purchase anything separate if you use the number keys often). The screen size is great and the quality of the graphics is exceptional. I've only owned it a few days but I absolutely love this laptop and would recommend it to anyone!

I was happy that the computer was delivered fast. My previous puchases from other Amazon vendors took very long. The computer is light and beautiful like everything that Samsung makes. It works fine except for the DVD/CD slot that gets stuck and needs to be pressed a few times before it opens. I have not seen that problem before in my several Sony computers. Otherwise it is a delight.

"Disappointing" 2010-05-03

I bought an N150 after Consumers Reports gave it high reviews. A week after I received it, it wouldn't come back on after Windows updated Windows 7 Starter. I sent it to factory service which replaced the hard drive. When it came back the touch pad didn't work so I returned it to service. After receiving it from service a second time, the touch pad works but is erratic and jumpy. I tried reducing the sensitivity but, regardless of sensitivity setting, it still is unpredictable. It's sometimes hard to get the cursor to move, and when it does move, and it comes near a link or button, it tends to stop and open a bidirectional arrow instead of smoothly moving past or to the link. It works fine with an external mouse but I don't want to have to carry a mouse with me on a trip. I must say that Samsung service is very convenient. They only require carrying it unpackaged to a UPS store where it is packaged and shipped at no charge.

I already own a Samsung N120. It is pearl white, with chrome hinges, solid, very durable plastic, Samsung embossed outside in chrome letters, speakers on the sides of the screen as well as below, an AMAZING keyboard with beveled keys, full size... so I recommended the N150 to a friend seeing that it was newer and seemed to have replaced the glossy screen with a matte screen which was a much wanted upgrade. To my absolute shock, Samsung has decided to rip off it's customers by going cheap and removing every single one of the features I listed above. This computer is half the N120 or less! They were so cheap to not even print the model name of the computer as they did with the N120. The plastic is cheap, the keys on the keyboard are flat chiclet toyish looking, the speakers are gone, the outside shell is a cheap glossy fingerprint showing gimmick... anyone giving this computer anything more than 1 star has simply not seen what they put out before in order to compare and realize Samsung has downgraded what they were selling for the same price to half the value. They even took the blue-lit power button on the right hinge off and put a conventional one under the front edge that is as mediocre as possible.

Really no complaints. I knew going in that the computer would be a little slow, and it is when i'm on the internet. but since i mostly use it for word processing it doesn't bother me. Despite the slower internet speeds, I love my netbook! It is small enough for me to carry with me every day on the train and not feel like I'm lugging rocks in my bag. Battery life is great, i can use it all week without having to recharge it. Overall - I am very happy. (Even the webcam works really well when talking over skype).

I like this Netbook. BUT it's barely functional without 2GB of Ram. I'm no geek, the difference is incredibly noticeable. I had big problems with Flash at sites like Hulu and reviews said that the Atom processor can't really run flash but not true - the problem was trying to run it with the 1GB. With 2GB this netbook will do everything you need it to do.

It is all the good things it says it is but here are the drawbacks from my point-of-view:

1. Cheap plastic construction (this is partially to lower the cost and partially to lower the weight)
2. It is not clear if the RAM is upgradable to 2GB, my first attempt to do so using Crucial recommended 2GB module upgrade turned out to be a dud (a [...] issue). Acer needs to clarify the true capability of the motherboard (1 or 2GB of RAM?). In the long run 1GB is not enough if you want to run multiple programs using Windows 7 on this netbook, so plan to be somewhat frustrated with the speed and sometimes non-responsiveness of the netbook.
3. Difficult to type on because of lightweight keys (I know, I know, its a netbook, but quick typing requires firm keys to minimize typos)
4. Not so friendly touchpad, get a portable mouse!

However, for the price and if you just want to surf the internet and word process it is a good option

I needed a computer to view pdf documents during a 2.5 day seminar. I also looked at purchasing an Ipad. After reviewing the specifications of both, I decided on the netbook, as you can use it as a computer (it is a computer). All the software I have installed on the netbook works, but keep in mind that I use business software, not games.

Upon purchasing the computer, the first thing I did was upgrade the memory. I highly recommend you do a memory upgrade to 2G, but make sure to read the blogs and post concerning memory upgrade, as I read the recommended Crucial memory upgrade does not work. I purchased Kingston part # KVR800D2S6/2G memory upgrade as recommended on a blog post, and it works fine. I installed it, booted the computer, and it recognized the 2G without any problem. The computer runs SO MUCH BETTER with the upgrade, and far exceeds my expectations for the computer. Acer should offer this computer with the upgraded memory, but I understand they have to offer this computer in a competitive market.

The only problem I have come across is from time to time I will boot the computer and there will be no keyboard response. I simply reboot and everything works fine. I know, this is puzzling, but with the memory upgrade, overall, it is a great netbook computer that exceed my expectations for a netbook computer.

"Problem with touch screen click button" 2010-04-02

Just purchased this computer. I thought the touchscreen left and right click buttons would be helpful, but after using it, I found it to be a hindrance. The main problem is that you cannot use two hands to navigate as you can on a regular laptop mouse set-up. I often left click with my left index finger, and sweep with my right. This is particularly evident when you try to highlight text. When you press down on the left click button, and also finger over the touch pad to color the text, the mouse wants to navigate in both directions (for each finger) and makes it very difficult to try to get the pointer to hover over one spot.
Very frustrating, and a deal breaker in my case.

On a positive, I can say I absolutely love the keyboard. Quality wise, It is OK, and I do like how the ac plug comes straight out the back which helps prevent side pressures on the plug. It is also a beefy plug, unlike the Esus which has the small adapter pin. The ac adapter itself is as compact as it could be.
