On September 20, 2010, I presented a talk to the Bay Area Professional Videographers Association in Santa Clara, California. The talk was titled “Online Video Delivery – The Game is Changing”. We had about 30 members in attendance and we also live streamed the talk via uStream.tv. The talked lasted about 90 minutes and covered everything from the basics of online delivery to the more advanced topics of using mRSS for syndication, creating Video Sitemaps, understanding the differences between Wrappers and Codecs and finally the advantages of sharing sites and self hosting/CDNs.

I spent quite a bit of time explaining some of the new technologies and devices that are just about to release. A major focus of my talk was the explanation of the new and exciting Google TV. I feel Google is on the leading edge of bringing video via the internet into the living room. I feel there are really four devices to watch in the next few months. Google TV and Logitech will introduce the Revue device. Sony and Samsung will also introduce TVs and Blu-Ray Players with Google TV inside. We will also see the release of the Boxee Box by Boxee and D-Link. Tivo also has an upgrade to their PVR that will include the ability to watch live streams (using mRSS) via the internet. Finally Apple TV was just released and has some great new features supporting video podcasts. The day after my talk, Roku announced support for 1080p video and one of their plugins supports mRSS video podcasts, which will allow video producers to stream their videos to the Roku Media Player.

Below are a list of resources that I mention in my talk. These are worth checking out…

  • Google TV: Probably the most important advance in the Online Video Delivery industry… Google is bringing the entire web experience to the living room. They are the ones to watch. Check out this website for information and updates.
  • Boxee: Another very strong competitor in the world of OVD. Boxee has been developing an awesome software application for viewing video over the internet. Their software is Free and easy to use.. download and check it out.
  • Tivo Premiere: Tivo is not giving up without a fight, and recently reteamed with both DirecTV and Comcast. Their device is just a video player, but with the awesome Tivo UI, they may actually have a chance of a come back. Let’s hope so! Roku Media Player: Roku just announced support for 1080p30 video and with the Sunimi plugin, you can stream videos via mRSS. The other nice thing about this device is its cheap. It starts at $59.
  • Amazon S3: I spoke a lot about using Amazon S3 and Cloudfront to self host. Here is a link to their site.
